Downgrade from 2.3.3 to 2.2.1 - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys,
Is there any way I can downgrade from 2.3.3 to 2.2.1 ? I accidentally upgraded to 2.3.3 and lost my rooting. I'd like to install rVoix in my Nexus One but it seems like it doesn't work unless you downgrade to 2.2.1 and root it again.
Appreciate your help.
Thanks
Jugs

Unroot /restore guide in the wiki.
Use passimg with the FRG33 file...

Use FRG33 (PASSIMG method), then use Update method to move to 2.2.2

Have you tried using super one click to root your N1 at 2.3.3?

[Update] - I have downgraded to EPE76. Thanks for your help guys.
Now I'd like to root my device ? Should I upgrade to FRG33 before I can root mydevice ?
Thanks
Jugs

I used SuperOneClick to root my device and it says successfully rooted. However when I checked using Root checker downloaded from Market place, it says "You dont have root access".
I can run su command from within adb shell which means I should be on a rooted phone I guess. Please correct me if I am wrong.
I installed rVoix.apk on the device however I couldn't find the folder /dev/voc. The instruction says do "adb shell chmod 666 '/dev/voc*' " but I am not able to find that folder.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Jugs

Why not flash Geo's FRG83D that is rooted and completly stock?
Will that root it...? Can I just download it on my phone and proceed from the handset ..
Sent from my Nexus One
Its already rooted. But it will use more internal memory because its deodexed for themes.
Super One Click can root it, read their thread.

[Q] Nexus One 2.3.3 Gingerbread, Simple Root?

Since upgrading to Gingerbread 2.3.3, I've lost the root access I had on Froyo. I used the RageAgainstTheCage method before and found that worked well. I could easily re-root after each update to Froyo, but it doesn't work now that I have updated to Gingerbread.
Is there a 1-Click Root or something fairly simple, similar to RageAgainstTheCage perhaps, that I can use to root my device without unlocking the bootloader??
I've heard some people mention Ginger Break?
Thanks, Steve.
No.
Whatever 'Gingerbreak' is is unreleased yet, apparently the dev wants a few more devices in the wild first.
Simple? Sure...
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
So if my bootloader is unlocked what else do I have to do at that point, push a custom recovery? I was under the impression that none had been updated for 2.3 on the nexus one yet.

same problem with me.. waiting for simple one..

Recovery is version independent. Flash one, then use it to flash ChainsDD's su files.
Yup, flash a new recovery, then use the recovery to flash on the su update file
Alright cool thanks, didn't want to come off as ignorant on the matter but to be honest sometimes it feels like getting detailed information is kinda tough with all the threads that get created on the same subject and how large some of them get.

Reports I've read indicate that the rageagainstthecage exploit doesn't work for 2.3.3.
If the soft-root exploits don't work on 2.3.3, simply downgrade to a 2.2 version, soft-root it, install a custom recovery and then flash a root 2.3.3 ROM...
I'm not completely certain, but I don't think you can downgrade either. At least I've not heard of anyone succeeding with the passimg approach yet...

It'd be great to have GingerBreak released. Please?
Looks like downgrade is possible for some, while others are struggling...

Anyone need help????
but if i downgrade to 2.2.2 and root the n1 while its in 2.2.2. Wont it come out of root when I put the stock 2.3.3 on. Atleast for me the whole reason I went to 2.2.2 is so i can get the stock verison of gingerbread. I do want to root my phone but I dont wanna use a different rom as of now I wanna keep the stock verison of gingerbrad that I got from google. I guess my real question is without the ramble, Once I downgrade and root the Phone wont I lose root once I put the stock 2.3.3
Just install a pre-rooted stock 2.3.3...

Here I am!
I have successfully downgraded from stock GRI40 to FRG33 (via PASSIMG), rooted, flashed custom recovery and finally flashed a stock rooted GRI40.
Congrats!
I did actually correct myself later...

Guide for N1 Root Gingerbread from OTA 2.3.3 without unlocking bootloader

Many thanks to danger-rat for finding everything.
1 - Make sure you have a backup of everything.

If you get the "main version is older" error here, you're out of luck... do not continue, because you can't.
3 - Root:

4 - Flash whatever you wanna flash (including a pre-rooted 2.3)

What do I do? I'll refine this first post for the full instructions, and all files needed, as I collect them. I'll probably post pictures if I have time to take them while I'm doing this. Hopefully mine goes without a hitch. -James

I have a question about this one; is there a kernel or a radio version that will prevent you from doing the passimg to FRG33? It would be useful to know it, in order to avoid even trying it.
By the way, working on stock GRI40, would i have that problem?. I made the manual upgrade from FRG33 to GRI40, flashing all the time stock rom's from Google.
I've no idea what causes the "main version is older" error, so it seems like the only way to find out it's to try. Theres no risk in trying, except a few minutes of your time...
I've heard people suggest the hboot may be the problem, or the radio, or this, or that, but I've never seem anything to bring me to the same conclusion...
I believe efrant suggested that refurb phones may be the ones effected, and I'm kinds thinking he may be on the money...?

Should work. The only potential stumbling block is the passimg step, which doesn't work for a small number of people (no idea why)...

I've downloaded frg33, renamed it to PASSIMG.zip and moved it to the sdcard (Root folder), yet when I boot into hboot it doesn't recognise it (Does the search but then nothing). Any solutions?

If the zip holds another zip then use it.. I once failed to use rom just because of that.
Nope just files.
Make sure it's not named passimg.zip.zip (Windows often hides the extension).
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
Nope, it's PASSIMG.zip. I'm not sure if the file is corrupted, I tried downloading it about 3 times so far, none of them have worked.
Even if it's corrupted, your phone should still see it, and report an error.
The only reasons the phone wouldn't see it would be if the file is named incorrectly, in the wrong location (not on root of card), file is missing, SD not mounted, etc...

Your only option then is to unlock your bootloader, or wait...
Is your phone a refurbished or repaired one?
Sent from my NookColor using Tapatalk
No its not refurbished. I just got this phone new and it wasn't rooted to begin with at 2.2 and I made the mistake of updating to 2.3.3. I am assuming there will be a development in the works for this issue or another walkaround to this.

Rumor has it that the author of rageagainstthecage has a version working for Gingerbread, which is known as Gingerbreak. He's waiting for more phones to be updated before releasing it though...

This isn't working for me and I'm not sure why. Also, the captivate isn't showing that USB Debugging is connected, even though it's on and ADB via SuperOneClick and detect the phone. Drivers from samsung's webpage are installed as well.
