[Q] CM7 Nightly 26 - International Data Roaming...but not? - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A T-Mo user here but I just flashed CM7 (using directions from the CM wiki) on a friends Sprint Hero. As I have no experience with the network I am a bit baffled by the notification for International Roaming. We are far from being anywhere near international (middle of Illinois). We can't see the whole message, but below is what we can see:
International data roaming
You have lost data connectivity because you left your home ne
This is only appearing while connected to wifi which adds to my confusion as there shouldn't be roaming when on wifi...right?
Right now I believe that no harm is being done to his bill, but I can't find anything about this in any detail and want to know what if anything, can be done to stop the message from popping up.

I remember that complaint from the builds around early Feb. Hasn't been an issue since. I would say try to reflash and make sure all the correct root files/apps exist. I would also guess that the carrier bills based on location, not the msg you saw. I have int. data turned on and no werid bills yet, been running aospCMod (CM7 variant) for months. The only other reason I could guess that would cause that is maybe an old radio version, check and see if he has the radio that ends in .29 (new) or .27 (old).

anyone on ATT having data problems?

I've tried various different ROMs but it seems since installing the latest releases of Froyo I can't seem to get any kind of consistent data speeds any more.
One minute I'm getting 2mb the next I'm getting 200 or no connection at all. I've tried going back to other roms even 2.1 (cyanogen) but still have the issue. I don't know if it's network related or something is messed up on my phone.
I'm going to go back to completely stock everything (including radio) and see if I still have problems but just wanted to post here to see if anyone else has seen issues.
Thanks
Before you resort to messing with your device you might want to call AT&T and ask them whats up with you area. I found that 16 out of 20 towers in my arean were down and that was the problem. I continued to question them about what they were doing about it and found that the answer was nothing. The towers are Verizon owned and they cant do anything about it. They gave me a $280.19 credit on my account which almost pays next months bill.
I saved myself from the trouble and got next months bill paid.
Now, thats killing 2 birds with 1 stone
Yeah I've been having absolutely terrible data all day. I got on here looking for a thread about this. I'm also on AT&T. It has pretty much stopped working completely for the last two hours.
I read there was a nationwide outtage and people thought it was T-Mo but they claimed it was HTC.
Not real sure what the issue is but it's getting annoying.

ya... I ended up calling them... they said not having my IMEI # on my account would cause strange things eventually when the system does it's scans or whatever... they added the # to my account and data seems fine now... well, fine within ATT standards lol
I have been having big issues with the data connection since froyo came out.
Data will get "stuck" on sending and no program (browser, sync, market, ...) will be able to send or receive data ... they all time out or give a network connection error.
The did do an IMEI scan. They shut off my data because I had an iPhone plan.
I just hulked out at the ATT store for half an hour.
I'm still using a GSM carrier because I want to switch phones whenever I please.
They put me on the smartphone data plan. What happens if I want to grab an iPhone 4 and switch back and fourth?
So Angry. Don't Tread on Me!
Well I feel like an asshole. SwitchPro Widget disabled my data connection.
**** it I'm getting an iPhone.

If you look around, there's a broad array of AT&T data problems the last 2-3 days... So something is going on, and I highly doubt it has anything to do with any hardware, software, etc, except for specific examples of course.

Crock'o's###e (it's an Irish crock, so there's an "e" at the end). All they need is the SIM card #, or ICCID, to authenticate the user. The IMEI is irrelevant and if the network needs it, it's auto-pulled from the switch (GSM phones always broadcasts the IMEI when they connect, it's how they nab people for the data plans). What the rep is doing with the IMEI is just updating the billing system, not anything network related (again, since the network already has your info). Now...what happens is that whenever you change the SIM or IMEI in the billing system, it orders the network to push out an OTA SIM update. There is,however, an option to simply send the OTA without fudging with the numbers.
Oddly enough, I ran the "mark the spot" application and at the end, it asked me if I wanted to run a diagnostic test. I selected yes and then about 10 minutes later it sent me a free text message acknowledging that they received my issue.
Now i'm testing my speeds and everything seems back to normal!
I'm getting consistent 1.5 up and 1.5 down whereas I was getting < 100 each way a couple of hours ago.
I'm in MD btw.

Ya I've always been thinking the same thing but was rather desperate to get better results after a week of poor performance and, surprisingly, after updating the IMEI # I was getting full speeds again. It could be purely coincidental but I guess there's absolutely nothing wrong with having the correct IMEI on file.
ATT has been sucking lately. I don't know if it's the froyo radio or what but I have been experience a lot of lag when the phone has been off for a bit then trying to initiate a data connection. ATT's data network can be absolutely awesome or absolutely SUCK, depending on the time of day and network utilization. I think I'm ready to jump ship to sprint (apparently they've really cleaned up their network problems in central ohio) or verizon but the Nexus has me stuck to ATT until something significantly better comes a long to switch into.
Too bad all newer phones on other networks all have those craptastic sudo layers like sense and blur... that crap and the "personal touch" of the carrier to android releases always ends up in it being a small eternity before you actually get the latest android. This is why the Nexus stays in my hand... I sure hope someone else releases a vanilla android phone that's support as widely as the Nexus.

but yea i hope it has nothing to do with hardware. i was just fine with my nexus one using 3G up until a few days ago. i hope this is AT&T's way of fixing their 3G. this better get cleared up soon cuz im sooo ready to jump onto Verizon's Droid X or jump on T-Mobile's Galaxy S (while still being able to use my sim card on my nexus). i always had issues with AT&T and i just tried to ignore it while i was on the iPhone 3Gs/Nexus One but now this is ridiculous. i have had a few nights were i would get no data service at all. i was scared as sh*t thinking i messed something up while i was flashing (i happened to have flashed something the night i had no data) but when i woke up the next morning, i had data again. im almost fed up with AT&T. im paying $175 a month for two lines and this is the crap i get?

[Q] I have tmobile, with Data plan, but does not work on my G1

So I've done plenty of searching, enough so that I was able to unlock my phone without the data working, rooted my phone, flashed and modded it, successfully running newest Biffmod.
That being said, i'm 100000% sure I have a working data plan, my plan is unlimited everything.
Works fine in any of my other phones, Dash 3G, HTC HD2, Unlocked Samsung blackjack i607.. The difference, those are all windows mobile phones?
But the HTC HD2 Dual boots android 2.2 froyo and data works there.
Yup, same sim I'm talking about, same plan, just different phones.
Any Idea why my data plan is not working with the G1? Am I doing something wrong? It worked when i FIRST got this phone (ordered it off ebay not that long ago to play with).. After factory reset/wipe before modding is when it all went sour.
Was stuck on log in screen so I had to do the work around to get into the phone, obviously not with Biffmod I can skip.. But I cant use market place, check e-mail, ANYTHING data related. Yet my Icon says 4 bars, 3G and I even see the "up" and "down" data xfer arrows giving me activity.
It's as if it's "there" just not working.
Any help would be great appreciated, I plan to go to T-mobile and hopefully one of the people there will actually have some tech savvy.. Wishful thinking.
Long story short, I just want my data to work. Please, and thank you.
Do a search on here for the correct APN setings for your provider.
edit: here's the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=475564
Read the thread, it's for ATT users trying to use a T-Mobile phone.
The issue is that I actually have T-mobile.
I'm fairly sure I saw the apn settings for t-mo in there too. That's probably what you should be checking first.
Sent from my G1 using XDA App
Just google Tmobile's US apn settings or grab them from another of your devices, then it will work.
Perfect, I'll give that a shot when I get home from work today, thanks for all the help so far.

[Q] Strange issues with CM7

Hi-I'm normally a Captivate user, asking here regarding my fiancee's phone, which we got after she smashed her third Aria.
I made sure I bought an AT&T 3G capable Nexus One, and then right away flashed CM7 on it.
Here are my issues:
1. The phone never ever says 3g. Always says E, even when we know we're 3g. (my captivate showing 3g, for example.)
2. There seems to be weird data issues---we use google voice for texting, and for some reason she'll often go hours or days before messages are delivered. Nobody else has this issue.
Is it possible I have a bad flash, or do I need a new modem/radio, anyone have any ideas? She doesn't really make any use of most of the CM7 features, maybe should just go back to AOSP...
At least regarding issue 1 there's a way to toggle data to stay in 3g or 2g mode through the default Power Control widget. It was a nightmare me because it doesn't change right away and I couldn't tell if it had switched bands or was in the process of doing so.
Can't help ya with the google talk issue since I don't use it.
It would help knowing what radio you are running before we let you know whether you should upgrade or not.
And how did you make sure you bought a 3G capable phone? Was it just in the description, or did you actually verify part numbers?
I would also verify you have a clean install by going into recovery and MANUALLY wiping the /system partition. If you want to be really thorough you can perform a Factory Reset/Data Wipe. This will completely erase your phone (including the OS). Then just install CM7 and the latest gapps.
Also, it does need to be said... just in case. As Eesti mentioned, make sure "Enable 2G" under Settings -> Wireless and Networks -> Mobile Network isn't enabled.
Thanks for the responses, sorry I"m just getting back.
It's currently running the 5.08 modem, which is the one everyone says to use unless you're in Korea, right?
I bought it new from a seller on ebay several months ago, and no I guess I didn't verify part numbers but I very specifically bought from a dude with perfect feedback and an auction that guaranteed it. How would I check part number?
I'll check the hard setting---I found the notification widget for 2g/3g, and it says "2g3g" with the light, tapping it makes it say 2g, so I'm assuming it's on.
I tried the "Force into 3g mode" setting by entering debug mode or whatever @ the dialer, setting it's set to WS....whatever...preferred, set it to "ws only" and it shows no signal @ all.
The s/n is behind the battery on the sticker.

[Q] Radio issues following ROM update

Hey, thanks for clicking my post. TL;DR Since updating from ARHD 40.3 to Viper One 6.2.0, my radio has been having major intermittent issues. I have a HTC One m7_ul unlocked outright from Optus here in Australia. It is as of right now running the latest firmware linked to by the Viper One/ARHD threads, the latest TWRP, is S-OFF and superCID, running Viper One 6.2.0.
Symptoms:
1) No signal most of the time.
2) Signal appears to return during periods of movement (e.g. driving).
3) Even at full signal, there is no mobile connection (no data, no text/calling).
4) Once every few hours, when it has signal, it will gain mobile connection for a short period of time, after which it will cut out again - repeat to 1).
Here's a short story about how this came to be:
For many many months now it has been running just fine on stock firmware, rooted with S-ON running ARHD 40.3 (since that version came out).
About a fortnight ago I started noticing issues with my contacts application. Something to do with 501 contact link suggestions and certain contacts having hundreds of Facebook profile entries. This would cause issues in the People app (people just wouldn't load) and the SMS app (message histories wouldn't load, including new texts).
After some troubleshooting attempts, I resolved to reinstall a ROM. I opted to install the latest Viper One (6.2.0) successfully. It resolved my issues. However, it introduced a new one. The next morning I woke up to 4 texts from my service provider informing me I'd missed calls. I had no notifications as such, so the calls never reached my phone. I put it down to tower signal flex in my area. I left and as I walked out the door I noticed I had no signal (no bars, x above the icon in statusbar). Driving around seemed to fix the issue though, it got back up to normal values quickly enough.
However, even though I had plenty of signal and mobile data was ostensibly turned on, I couldn't get internet. I tried sending a text to myself but it failed send. Calls out simply waited on signal and then timed out. Every single other function of the device is 100% AOK (wifi, bluetooth, nfc, etc). The entire ROM is fully functional, can't find any other issues with stability or otherwise.
I put up with it for the day and get home and start troubleshooting. Here's what I tried so far, in order:
1) Change from Viper One to latest ARHD (71.1). Installed with no issues. Booted phone, no dice - no signal.
2) Checked SIM by moving to old iPhone 4 - full signal, radios work. It's not a service issue.
3) Revert to last known working ROM - ARHD (40.3). Installed with no issues. Booted phone, no dice - no signal.
4) Research research research. Think it might be a problem with firmware perhaps. Tried revone, failed because I'm not on 4.2.
5) Flash MaximusHD (11.0.0) in order to make use of revone for S-OFF/superCID. Flashed latest firmware linked in Viper One/ARHD threads.
6) Reboot phone. Still no dice with latest firmware on MaximusHD (11.0.0).
7) Retry with latest ARHD. No dice.
8) Retry with latest Viper One. No dice.
In every single instance, all the ROMs are fully functional except for mobile signal - wifi, bluetooth, nfc, etc. radios function perfectly. No issues with ADB or fastboot during any step of these processes. All my device info shows what I expect to see. I've searched as much as I can, to no avail. I turn to first-time posting here as a last resort to maybe find out what the issue is.
I am slowly reaching the thought that the hardware itself might be the issue. I'd appreciate any insight into what could be causing this - be it software or hardware - as well as if there is any way to test or diagnose the radio physically. Even just a confirmation ("Yep, sounds like your radio's FUBAR"). In the meantime, I'll be using aforementioned iPhone 4 (ugh).
Thanks for reading.
Have you attempted to flash a different radio baseband?
Look up the radio version used in ARHD 41. If you find it, search for the radio within the forums and flash it. You can still keep the most current version of your preferred ROM. Search the threads for how to flash a radio baseband, there are plenty of them.

I found a forum for HTC One radios here, it's in the AT&T section but apparently work on all HTC Ones. I was unable to find out which radio ARHD 41 used, my understanding is that custom ROMs don't usually come with a radio baseband of their own and they don't appear to list any on their thread that I could see. I would inquire but I think there's an issue with new users posting in development sections. Do you think it's worth trying to look further into what radio was used, or should I start flashing radios from the aforementioned list? There's a couple that stand out as possible candidates (the earliest version, the newest version, etc) but I'm not sure I want to just start going crazy on that list until something works. Or do I?
edit: To clarify, and they say explicitly in the ARHD post FAQ, they do not include radio/hboot/firmware in their ROM. So I must assume that I was simply on the stock radio the device shipped with.
edit 2: Confirmed my current baseband matches one of the ones indicated as installed from firmware package. I'm not sure what it was before I updated to Viper One or even while I was using Viper One.
Flashed the earliest radio baseband available from the aforementioned thread. Put the SIM back in, signal achieved, able to send texts/make calls/USSD codes. I was unable to get it to transfer mobile data, however.
Can't believe I didn't think about radio baseband. Didn't even know that was a thing. I just thought it was part of the firmware package. There you go I guess. Thanks again for the tip.

No problem, just remember that if you're having issues with certain partitions on the device, each partition is technically flashable if you are S-Off and SuperCID.

I've tried just about every radio in that forum. They all seemed to have the same issue for me - at first it seems to have no signal, then it gets normal signal, receives/sends any buffered texts, and then fails to work after that for any purpose regardless of signal. I think I'm back at square one; I don't suppose there are any other simple things to try?

If you are having issues still, the other alternative is to flash a different firmware version than what the ROM provides. Firmware and radios tend to "talk" to each other in certain ways, so maybe your firmware isn't using your radio the way you need it to. Also, make sure you are installing firmware particular to your device. For instance, do not install firmware originally meant for an AT&T phone if you use Verizon or another carrier. They tend to write the code particular to these things. I would do some research through the forums and see if you can find a good combination in your area that people have tried. Maybe even a Google search will help out if the forums seem daunting to dig through.
And don't forget, the iPhone has a Quad-Band receiver that's capable of receiving cellular signals much clearer. The HTC One, in my opinion, does not match hardware compared to the iPhone. The iPhone will always technically be superior, no matter what opinions people hold to both.
First, thanks again for your patience and assistance.

I was not aware of this restriction. I suspect I may have flashed firmware for a different region. I isolated the Optus firmware RUU numbers and got a firmware package matching, and the android-info.txt matches the device original CID and modelnum. I'll try it soon.
I'm still having trouble understanding, though, how it could have failed in the first place. My phone was S-ON when the radio stopped working; surely changes to firmware/radio couldn't have occurred anyway? None of the ROMs I've touched have firmware or radio included as far as I could tell.
Flashed the firmware appropriate to my region (4.20.980.1). Came with radio. Rebooted, put in SIM, no signal for 5 minutes. When I get signal, texts don't send and calling times out, USSD codes give connection problem errors. Same as before. How likely is it the actual hardware could be damaged? I did drop it on concrete, on the front of the device at the top, around the time this started happening - very shortly before I flashed Viper One to fix the contacts issue. There was no visible damage.

Quick question:
Are you installing your firmware and software without the SIM card in? If so, I would leave the SIM card in and have all the software installed during the process. Damage to the phone should not cause problems for connecting to the cellular network. Have you tried leaving the house, going outside, or getting into a different area to try your signal? Maybe your house is a deadzone and the phone is having a hard time picking it up. My room gets like this since I live in Florida where houses are built with cinder blocks to prevent hurricane damage. It really messes with my signal.

Good ideas, but unfortunately not - every firmware and radio package I've flashed, I've done once with the SIM, once without, thinking along a similar line.
I'm in a known good cell location - coverage in my area is fantastic with my provider (Telstra, usually get 5 bar signal on 3G - I do not get LTE on my plan). I test in multiple places - next to my PC, outside the house, down the street, etc. The behaviour I've noticed is that I have no signal regardless of where I go, for about 5 minutes after booting the phone, after which it gets signal, sends/receives any buffered texts, and then fails to communicate successfully after that (i.e., I get the test text I sent myself, then I resend another test, and it fails to send). The iPhone 4 I've been moving my SIM to has been receiving full signal (as expected) at every place I've been testing the HTC One.
Hmm...
You might have to go into your APN settings to change some things in order to get it to work properly. Go to your Settings, then Mobile Data, then Access Point Names. From this menu click the current APN saved with the phone. After that, it will have you insert some information. Check this website for the specific APN information for your carrier. Make sure it's for your carrier as there is a large list of different ones on there.

Other than that, I honestly couldn't tell you what your issue is.

Tried the APN thing. There was indeed a few things different from the listed settings, but honestly, they were pre-populated with a bunch of Telstra data beforehand when the SIM was in. I made the changes and noticed no difference.
Thanks again for your help. As a last step I will return it fully to stock. After that I suspect my only recourse would be taking it back to Optus and asking if they'll quote me to fix it.
Unfortunately it does seem to be hardware issue from the history of what you have tried and posted.
Use nkk71's guide listed in my signature to go back to stock for warranty but substitute your local RUU/nandroid/etc.

Sorry about that, I know having a custom ROM is a lot of fun, but there can definitely be some cons along with it.
Good luck with your phone!

Weird issue with no data while making phone calls

Hell of a story, I apologize in advance for the length, but maybe it'll be intriguing to some of you. Pure Nexus rom as of i think april 23rd?
I have a Nexus 6 that I bought 2 years ago in April on Verizon (purchased from verizon). My contract ran out April 27th, went to AT&T with my girlfriend because I was going to get on her plan to save money on our phone bills. Ported over the number to my N6 fine. But I noticed I only got an H+ symbol, no LTE. I asked the guy if that was normal, he said yes. I got data and could make calls so I figured it was fine. Did some speed tests, 2 mb/down at best. My GF was getting 15-20 in the same spot on her Galaxy S7.
Long part of this story short, the tech they put me on the phone with said it was due to it being a Verizon variant and was not capable of full LTE speeds on AT&T. I went to the Verizon store and asked if they could put me back under Verizon after explaining the problem. He said sure, and then worked up pricing to have my GF switch to Verizon with me instead, and to get a Pixel XL.
So far so good, they had to do a temporary number for me because there's issues porting a number twice in a 24 hour span, but they cleared it up, got my real number ported, happy camper, good speeds. Except this one issue.
Now when I'm on the phone (actual phone call), my data drops. The LTE signal actually disappears, and nothing displays except signal bars. As soon as the phone call is over, it comes back. I never had the problem before this whole back and forth mess. I can't seem to figure out any options to make it not do this. I was thinking about reflashing my rom in case that would help, maybe something got messed up in the switch back and forth to GSM and then back to CDMA?

Try to unlock bootloader, install TWRP, root the stock rom, then install lastest bootloader (v72.03) and latest radio (v05.45):

Use WUG Fresh NRT tool to accomplish above when hooked to Windows PC via microUSB in 2.0 USB port with correct Windows drivers installed (OK for ADB): https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475

I'm already unlocked, rooted, TWRP'd and using the PureNexus that came out end of april (I haven't flashed the one in may yet). I believe I'm also currently using the latest radio and latest bootloader.
Edit - I actually was not on the most recent radio, but I did flash that, no change.
The volte provisioned flag turned on in the testing menu? I have a setting for enhanced 4g lte mode in my settings, wireless networks/more/cellular networks settings. Did they remove the advanced calling from your account? Just throwing some things out there.

The tech may not be wrong as Verizon uses band 13 as their main LTE band and ATT uses band 17

In others countries we don't get the same bands management, then I can't say anything about LTE.
But I'm on PureNexus 7.1.1 and I get the same "issue" about network droppin when calling. When the call starts, my phone turns into don't disturb-mode and recover the network only when the phone call ends.. It doesn't really cut my network connection, but it looks like. It may be rom settings.
However I don't care as long as everything works good, it's just an icon. (how a phone call can be done while network is shutted off ^^)
When I was on the stock ROM, this autumn, 7.1 version of Android did the same thing, loosing data connection while being still connected to the network (but at anytime not just phonecalls). Finding it back some minutes later. That was fixed with 7.1.1. Stock.
Hope that might help you (looks not ) if it's the same problem. May be give an eye to the Rom settings..
Have you tried if your device do the same thing with an another Rom ? (stock for example)

I knew something looked like it was missing. I don't have any enhanced 4g LTE settings in that section. Normally there's a tick box to turn it on there. It's missing. Is that due to them not having it turned on in my account?
Also for everyone else, this problem only started when I tried the whole at&t switch. I was on this rom when I switched and it worked fine before then. I didn't factory reset since then though, wondering if I need to try that.

The tech is definitely wrong; since it's a Nexus 6 (presumably XT1103) it has all the possible LTE bands used in the US. There should not have been any issue when switching. I had something similar happen to me, when I just switched to verizon and did the "reset network settings" button, it screwed up my phone so I couldn't use LTE period, I had to reflash the modem in order to fix it. I know you already said you reflashed the modem, but I'm not sure what to suggest. There is absolutely nothing physically wrong or incapable about your phone, just some config got screwed up somewhere along the way. I'd just try to flash as many things as you're comfortable with without losing your userdata. Like modem, bootloader, etc. until your data comes back. If nothing else, press the network settings reset button and flash the latest modem. Make sure your twrp is up to date as well.

I think i'm going to reflash my rom today. I did the modem, twrp is up to date, bootloader is fine. I did the reset network settings (I was sure that was going to fix it, no dice). So I'm going to reflash the rom today and see if that fixes it. After that I have no idea what is left to try other than reverting to stock, which I'd like to avoid.
Yes, it is a feature that needs to be added to your account. Go online and check their website or go into the hidden menu and activate it. If it sticks, it's on your account.
I tried the wifi and video calling flags and they didn't stick. Go figure... C'MON big red...

How do you enter the hidden menu on the n6? I thought I found it but it wasn't working.
.#.#4636#.#. select the phone info tab. In there, there will be either a drop down menu or buttons to tick and they'll change color

I got in, VoLTE was not ticked. I ticked it. I got the setting for it then in settings. But making a phone call gave me an error. I rebooted, and it's not ticked now. So does that mean I need to call Verizon to have them flag my account?
You need to add it in your account then. Easy enough to do online. You want to, "manage features."

That did the trick. All fixed. Thank you! That was driving me nuts. I never considered the idea that the setting would be turned off . But since I did leave and come back...
Thanks again!
Glad you're all set. ?
