[Q] talk.apk - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i have tried to use the apk found at
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773272
Phone has been odin flashed to stock, clockwork rooted, & phoenix rom'd (hence the missing google talk)
It gives me an "install_failed_invalid_apk" error.
The captivate I am trying it on is a 1012. Does only have a apk from a 1010, 1011, or 1012 they can post?
Thanks!

You have to put them in system/app using adb our root explorer.

I have used AndroidCentral Sideload Wonder Machine to install it...that is where the error is from.

It's a system apk. It CANNOT be installed via the SWM. Adb or root explorer only, just like Jemack said.

Reinstalling Vending.apk aka Market after uninstalling through ADB

I hope this is the right forum. Seems like I've run into a bit of a pickle. I used to have the tmobile market app but had to start a fresh. So after some thought and fiddling around I used unyaffs to go through my nandroid backups and compared each version that i had from each nandroid backup. Until I found one with a obex file and it was just under 200kb(apk)
In my wisdom to try to get tmobile market back I uninstalled the market app. It failed to install that Vending.apk so i tried to reinstall the Vending.apk I made a backup of before i uninstalled. I get this error in adb
C:\Andorid>adb install C:/Vending.apk
1127 KB/s (757904 bytes in 0.656s)
pkg: /data/local/tmp/Vending.apk
Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_UPDATE_INCOMPATIBLE]

Any ideas without having to restore a nandroid backup? Thanks guys!
ps
For reference here's the error I got when trying to isntall the 200kb Vending.apk "stock" apk is 740kb
C:\Andorid>adb install C:/Vending.apk
968 KB/s (201467 bytes in 0.203s)
pkg: /data/local/tmp/Vending.apk

try
Code:
adb push Vending.apk /system/app/
Thank you very much sir. That worked for some reason it didn't work when I tried it prior but must have been because I didn't reboot my phone. Still going to be experimenting with Vending.apk lol

ADB* is an android debugging interface that allows you to do a lot with pushing and pulling system apps and using the logcat to find the culprit of crashes and bootloops and such. To get the market download and flash the latest gapps, provided by Cyanogen. It'll give you the market, gmail, among other google apps.
Is vending.apk, and marketupdater all I need for the market to work? Because I avcidently uninstalled the original vending.apk that I had, and replaced it with a different vending.apk. and when I try to install it it says it can't be installed but its been copied to /system/apps. Do you know what's going on and could you help me? With adb will it also install it in my phone? Thanks!

Help installing an App?

I am trying to install something that will read WORD documents. The old Google Apps (from Cyanogen) used to have something, but the latest round doesn't appear to.
I get the error message "install_parse_failed_no_certificates"
I'm using the command:
adb install C:/PassionQuickOffice.apk
Tried a different version of the file and I also tried to install using ESTRONG - no luck
Any idea what I am doing wrong?
Not sure if this will work or not but I don't think you can/need to install it.
Just push it to system/app

You will have to remove it via Titanium Backup. If it still fails to install the APK you'll have to manually log into via adb (or use a terminal emulator) and remove the following:
/system/apps/Swype
/system/lib/libSwype*
That should do the trick. I've just installed a 2.6.x today on my Cappy and it's very nice.
Hi:
I tried to remove via Titanium, that did not work. So, I used Root Explorer and deleted the 2 files. Install was still unsuccessful. So, I used ADB to try to remove, and it says No such file or directory.
Even though I had Swype backed up with Titanium, it will not allow me to restore it, and I am completely unable to install a newer version.
I have searched and can't seem to find the stock Captivate Swype to try to reinstall it.
Any suggestions? I am desperate.
Thanks!

You are my hero! You're suggestion worked perfectly. Thanks SO much!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Not a problem...glad it worked. Sometimes people make things more difficult than they need be.
Could somebody post a short step-by-step on how to do this?
I need some help.
I used root explorer to look for the
/system/apps/Swype
/system/lib/libSwype*
files.
I found the libSwypecore file, but i didn't have any Swype files in /system/apps.
I deleted that file after uninstalling Swype using Titanium Backup. No success and I'm confused about what you mean by copying over the files using with root explorer. When I try to install my new version of swype, it asks if I would like to still install it since it's a system app (I'm guessing Swype is still recognized as part of the system). Then...it says it's unsuccessful.
Also, I can't restore for some reason since Titanium Backup doesn't have the option anymore
Where do you go to download the new Swype?
I have 2.4 currently.
Sent from my Captivate.
No one?

2.6.48.....from axura...but I think docs have updated swype as well?...not 100% sure, dont know of a direct download, might be due to the porting it to other devices and xda crackdown on swype downloads
Sent telepathically using vulcan mind meld app.
I believe the beta is 2.10. I haven't found an easy way to download 2.10 as it is only made available to Sywpe beta users and they aren't taking any more applicants at the moment.
I'm really hoping they make 2.10 more available soon...

I've downloaded a modified version somewhere and I deleted system/lib/libSwypeCore.so and also deleted the other two swype components via TiBu. Rebooted and installed the 2.10 apk fine
Also di11igaf's 2.0.1 rom has swype 2.10 in it
So, I uninstalled with Titanium Backup, deleted /system/lib/Swypecore.so. Rebooted my phone
Now, when i try to install the new Swype version, it initially says
"Replace application
The application you are installing will replace another application. All previous user data will be saved."
Ok and Cancel are my two options
I choose Ok of course, try installing and it says Application not installed.
From what I can tell, it seems like the stock Swype is somehow still recognized?
Edit: Nevermind, I got it working. I pushed/copied the files over.
Installed swype 1.60 version (many language packs including Dutch that I needed) by using the copy paste method. Uninstalling via titanium and removing any swype trace and then trying to install it by tapping the .apk didn't work, it just said install not succesful. Sideloading it via Android Central Sideload Wonder Machine gave me an error stating I did not have enough space (i have more than enough), oh well, at least the copy paste method worked. Renamed the 1.60 swype file to Swype.apk and put it in system/app/ and rebooted and worked... Thanks for the help, can finally (looked for a long time) now swype in dutch!
I tried to install and failed
Everybody here talks about "I copied over and it worked"
What do you copy and over what? Could you be more specific?
Just google swype beta and sign up for it and follow the instructions there.
Hi:
Does anyone have the original swype version found on the captivate? I updated it to a newer version some time ago, with help from this thread, but now (starting today) I am getting a message saying that my trial is over, and the "swype" feature is no longer working.
Please help.
Thanks!
UPDATE: I have found several other versions of swype, and uninstalled, and installed several. I seem to be having the same results. They all install, but the"swype" feature doesn't work, only regular typing works. I still have not found the original Captivate version.
Any thoughts?
Thanks again!
UPDATE: Okay, so I uninstalled all Swype using Titanium, then I went to the Swype website, signed up for the beta, and installed. Voila, it's working perfectly now I just hope this version doesn't eventually give the trial is exipred version eventually.

[Q] missing google apps

i've tried updating my google apps using the file downloaded from http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Latest_Version. It is the HDPI version for CM6 (20101114). I didn't upgrade to CM6, but applied this update zip anyway. Now i have FB and Market but my gmail and talk have disappeared.
i've tried manually installing by copying the file over to system/app but that didn't work. neither did trying to install them using astro (file could not be read as apk).
also tried applying the update EPE54B for CM5 instead but was unable to.
any solutions on how to get gmail back?

hey thanks for the suggestion. i've tried it and it says "install failed older sdk". i'm guessing it's because i'm on 2.1 while the apps are for cm6 (2.2).
however, i also cannot flash the apps for CM5 (2.1) and extracting them from the zip then trying to install gives me "Install Parse Failed No Certificates"..
any idea where i can find a compatible gapps?
any solutions? i found a youtube.apk from xda which installed.. but still no gmail...
Not entirely sure how to fix your problem but I would suggest doing a Nand backup before flashing GAPPS next time. I guess you can try deleting all the apks that the Latest CM6 GAPPS installed and try flashing EPWhatever again. Hope this helps

[Q] Can't install secure settings helper

I'm trying to install helper (busy box already installed) however, every time I try to install it, it reboots my phone. Pushing the apk into system\app also reboots the phone. I can push other apk's and remove apk's from system\app just not the helper apk. When I try to flash the securesettingshelper.zip in CWM it says "installation aborted"
I've tried a number of things to get this working including flashing the bulletproof-1.8 kernel. I've also tried doing the fix here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2230341
Does anyone have the helper installed on their device? If so, could you link or guide me through the process?
Thanks
EDIT: solved! not sure what the issue was still, but I just did a full wipe and reinstalled Android Revolution HD 8.0. Perhaps it's because I tried using Rom Cleaner 3.5 for the HTC One X

I got it to work. I just used the normal install from the app itself. nothing special, no apk or cwm zip file. Make sure your root is ok?

yea installing from the app is the first thing I tried. I know my root is good since su is installed and all other apps work fine.
i got the same "installation aborted" when flashing via cmw, but did manual copy paste and change name
(Manually copy to /system/app/SecureSettingsHelper.apk ) and then restart my n7105. now helper is working. will try if pattern unlock is working.
what other people do after installing helper?
