Windows Phone update history
We think even great software can always get better. That's why we periodically release Windows Phone software updates to add new features you've asked for and to maximize your phone's performance.
When a software update is available for you to download, we'll let you know. A notice will appear on your phone, telling you to connect your phone to your computer. (For details about the process, see Phone updates.)
To ensure quality, we release updates on a staggered schedule throughout the world. Many factors influence when you'll receive an update, including which phone model you have and which company provides your mobile service. We're committed to delivering updates in a timely manner, but don't be surprised if it takes a few weeks for us to notify you that an update is available for your phone.
The scope of each update varies. Sometimes we'll include only a few minor fixes or tweaks and sometimes we'll include brand-new features. When it's available, we'll also pass along software from phone manufacturers that improves the performance of specific phone models.
See How do I update my phone software? to learn how to check if there's an update available for you to download and which version of the Windows Phone operating system (OS) is currently on your phone.
Here's a summary of what we've included in each update so far.
March 2011
OS version: 7.0.7390.0
•
Copy & paste. You asked for it—now it's here. Just tap a word and drag the arrows to copy and paste it on your phone. You can copy text from emails, text messages, web pages, and Office Mobile documents, and paste it anywhere you can type. To learn more, see Copy & paste.
•
Faster apps and games. Nobody likes to wait. That's why we've whittled down the time it takes for apps and games to start up and resume. It's all part of our focus on getting you to the things you love, easier and faster.
•
Better Marketplace search. We've streamlined Marketplace search to make it easier to find specific apps, games, or music. Press the Search button in the Apps or Games section of Marketplace and you'll see only apps or games in the results. Press Search in the Music section of Marketplace to search just the music catalog.
•
Other Marketplace improvements. We've improved the stability of Marketplace while you download apps. We've also improved the experience of downloading apps larger than 20 megabytes, upgrading from trial apps to paid apps, using a credit card with an address outside the United States, sharing links to apps via email, sorting Xbox LIVE games by release date, and creating an Xbox LIVE account from within the Games Hub.
•
Wi-Fi improvements. We now display your phone's Media Access Control (MAC) address in Settings. (You might need this info if you try to connect to a Wi-Fi network that uses MAC address filtering. To learn more, see Connect to a Wi-Fi network.) We've also removed the limit on the number of Wi-Fi profiles that you can store and reduced the time it takes to start your phone if you've stored lots of Wi-Fi profiles.
•
Outlook improvements. We've improved the experience of viewing iPhone photo attachments you receive from a non-Exchange-based email account (such as a Google Mail, Hotmail, or Yahoo! Mail account), using the Global Address List (GAL) when connecting to Exchange Server 2003 using Exchange ActiveSync, and working with email display names that contain brackets (for example, "David Alexander [Contoso]").
•
Messaging improvements. We've improved the experience of receiving Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) messages if your phone uses a PIN-locked SIM.
•
Facebook integration. We've improved the experience of syncing Facebook accounts.
•
Camera improvements. We've improved the stability of switching between camera and video modes.
•
Audio improvements. We've improved the experience of using a Bluetooth headset to make calls when you're playing music or videos.
•
Other performance improvements. This month's update also includes software from several phone manufacturers that improves the performance of specific models. Naturally, if you don't have one of the affected models, we won't install this portion of the update on your phone.
February 2011
OS version: 7.0.7008.0
•
We made some improvements to the way we deliver software updates to ensure that the process keeps working smoothly for you.

did you try plugging it in to a computer with zune installed?
Zune still reports 7.0 (7008) for me (UK)
Hmmm... This seems to be good news. I am in Canada and my HD7 still says that I dont have any updates as of yet so I guess the waiting game begins.
Does anyone happen to know if there is a reported schedule for which countries the update will be going top first and then in what sequence from there?
HD7 my t mobile usa .. There is no update for me. ?
ok here in greece!updated!
Switzerland still no update

Just updated a few minutes ago.
Thanks,

Microsoft is slowly distributing the update to a number of unbranded devices worldwide and owners should see the update notification shortly. Carrier branded devices are a whole different story. A number of mobile operators, Orange, O2 and AT&T blocked the first Windows Phone 7 patch update when it was originally released. It’s not yet clear when carrier branded devices will receive update notifications. WinRumors understands that O2 UK should be pushing the update to its range of devices on March 24.
I had installed the "xda" nodo via gold card, and it still wants me to update (could it be footballs euro release was not GOLD<g>), anyhoo here goes nothing...

Football release was 7389 version...I think that this is the "official" update from Microsoft (7390)
Thanks,

same here. no update on my branded phone in austria (A1)
Interesting - it all worked, but it only kept the last restore point (it blatted the previous one)!
Schmoo
Well I won't waste any time looking for diffs so! Football rules (if I didn't mention before LOL)
Schmoo
Actually from a serious point of view - I could have fernangled zune backups so I could always return to a V1 side-loadable OS.
Also I bet these backups are in some password protected VHD format (since MS have been using them for many things of late - including the VM WMP7, and WHS V1 backups)
Hmmmm,
Gordon.
What broadband ISP you use in greece..??
Still wait for the T-Mobile Version
Unbranded to Euro O2UK, no update as of yet! Waiting game begins once again.

First Windows Update and How to Get It - 22/02/2011

NEW on Upcmong UPdates :14/0212011
Microsoft announced several new Windows Phone 7 features coming in 2011, including a “dramatically enhanced” browser experience based on Internet Explorer 9; additional multitasking capabilities; support for Microsoft Office documents in the cloud; and the addition of Twitter to the People Hub. The expanded capabilities announced today include:
•
Copy and paste functionality via first major update, coming in the next month
•
Twitter integration directly into the People Hub in 2011
•
Support for Office documents in the cloud in 2011
•
Dramatically enhanced Web browser experience based on IE9 in 2011
•
A new wave of multitasking applications in 2011
•
Targeting significant volume of Nokia Windows Phones in 2012
Multi Tasking
Want to know how the eventual, inevitable implementation of app multitasking on Windows Phone 7 will look? Wonder no longer: it's cards, which seems to be the way a lot of guys are going after webOS showed how to do it right a couple years back, and it looks hot. If you press the Start button you'll see the app tiles, then press the back button and you'll be right back in your app right where you left off. However, that's just the beginning: hold the back button you'll get a card-like view of all running apps. Pick your app and you're back where you left off in that one. You can multitask even in games, have Slacker playing in the background, and if you press a volume button while on the home screen you'll get a quickie interface for changing track, pausing, and playing.

One question we hear often is: What’s next for Windows Phone? We’re obsessive about listening closely to our customers and improving our phone software. So over the next few months, look for updates that add some new features you’ve asked for and also tune up your phone’s performance.
Here’s a peek at some of what’s ahead:
Copy and paste
Soon you’ll be able to copy text from emails, text messages, web pages, and Office Mobile documents, and paste it anywhere you can type.
Using copy and paste is easy and intuitive. In many cases you just tap a word, slide your finger to highlight any additional text, then tap the Copy icon. To insert this text in a message or app, just tap the spot where it should go, then tap the Paste icon.
Copy and paste is a handy way to quickly send someone’s latest Facebook update, turn-by-turn directions from Maps, or a must-see link from Internet Explorer Mobile. Once you’ve copied something, you can paste it again and again.
The new feature adds to the list of time-saving shortcuts already built into Windows Phone, like the ability to tap an address on a webpage to map it (US only).
Faster apps and games
Nobody likes to wait. That’s why we’ve whittled down the time it takes for apps and games to start up and resume. It’s all part of our focus on getting you to the things you love, easier and faster.
Better Marketplace search
We’ve streamlined Marketplace search to make it easier to find specific apps, games, or music. Press the Search button in the apps or games section of Marketplace and you’ll see only apps or games in the results.
Press Search in the music section of Marketplace to search just the music catalog.
Getting phone updates
How will you know when an update is available? Easy. Your phone is designed to automatically tell you via a pop-up message (unless you’ve turned this option off). For more details, see How do I update my phone software? link here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-us/howto/wp7/basics/how-do-i-update-my-phone-software.aspx

All fine and dandy, when can we expect this, mine is collecting dust, so I need to know when to turn it on to get the update.
Reading through what they are updating, they are giving us one thing that is need, leaving out 20 other important things, then focusing on what makes them money, games and market place, go figure.
I am excited about the windows phone 7 updates that will be coming down the pipeline soon. I actually wrote an article about it for Yahoo the other day. You can check it out here
http://www.associatedcontent.com/ar..._phone_7_update_is_on_the_horizon.html?cat=15
What i would also like though is an update from HTC that fixes battery life issues and sound level from the speakers, then all would be well in the world

Nice way to advertise your self, or as its called in the marketing world " nice plug"
But your article misses the big picture as many have, they give us copy and paste to shut us up, and then focus on fixing or improving what makes them money.
Till they add in the other 20 important missing functions which every smart phone in todays markets should have, your praising a product which is an insult on our intelligence.
when are we likely to get the update? i just got my hd7 today switched from android. i have to say the os is smooth. but lack of apps makes me sad . and the youtube app does not have hq option which sux.

I think the marketplace search is an awesome update. I thought it was terrible searching for apps and music was thrown in there. Supposedly they're fixing all the other problems later in the year with a HUGE update.
Don't worry be happy. Good news it has been officially announced that there will be an update for hd7 soon....the exact date will be announced and soon as it is guess what You will know. In the meantime I suggest live your lives, make someone smile, make another happy. Get some fresh air and smile.

It still says my phone is up2date...So did anyone got NoDo on the HD7 so far (in austria) with this workaround?

And i'll lose my sideloaded navigon !!
I'm on O2 in the UK and there is no update for me after using this method.
If I use your update without goldcard will I not lose all my data and texts from my phone. Also what about my linked contacts from Facebook, live and my outlook account?
P.S. closing Skype finally let me unlock the phone.
Also, is the connection manager the same as the HTC connection manager? Or should I uninstall that first before sideloading?
Will we get official mango update for htc hd 7?
I'm asking because it's ready and has been shipped to carriers for testing.
But news mention just nokia, and fujitsi.
So what about htc hd 7?
Of course we will. Not like Android, which chooses which phones will be updated. Official will be for all Windows phones!
Since its been shipped to carriers for testing have they given an actual date as opposed to the fall season.
The current version is beta, not for resale as it says on the windows screen when the phone starts. Certain things don't work and are not enabled including API's. Official version will be very soon, possibility as it looks is September, but no official word from Microsoft. Running mango myself, it is ready for release, few small glitches here and there lime html5 implementation API not working yet but is there. All the rest is fine. Volume now is loud and speakerphone is useful once again, as well as the volume steps are changed from 10 to 20 now. All the new hubs and custom hubs as email work great. Search, new look and feel market, people, photos, social integration, Facebook chat not yet. It is there but only redirects to Facebook. WiFi,3g, bt all work much better. Visual voice mail not available in this beta build. For anyone installing the test beta, please note that this. version will not upgrade to the official mango. One will have to revert to no-do first. All settings will be lost.
Microsoft has taken the Apple approach here, so almost all windows phones will get the MANGO update.
AS mentioned above its looking to come around september/October, unless you have a carrier branded phone which might push it a couple of months more, as Microsoft lets them test it for their networks.
It rumoured RTM is almost ready to be shipped so hopefully we on target.
Tried the mango beta and looks really promising.
Has anyone heard about WiFi calling?

Visual Voicemail works for me... And I do notice the volume is loader (thank god) but I don't see me being able to go to 20 instead of 10.....
Anybody verify this? Volume was always a big issue, especially plugging in to external speakers and such through the audio jack.

When you say the volume is louder do you mean when a headset or headphones are in? Also are they iphone/ipod loud?

Microsoft wants a full blown complete update in one shot. Whether carrier branded or not as of RTM the carriers also have their time to test it so given that mid to late October is about three months from now I do believe everyone will be receiving the update regardless of carrier branding.
Even if Hd7 gets official Mango update, it will be a while before the users start seeing it. I would assume the new devices will get more attention for carriers.
If no new phones come out then its probably safe to say yes. If new phones with the mango update come out then its probably a no.

The zune software is just a means to sync your music, videos and podcasts between your device and the computer. It's not carrier specific so it doesn't matter what type of plan you have, you should be able to update the software on your phone. I think zune pass and air sync are not carrier specific aswell
2. i would like to know about xbox live...how well it works in india?
Again, it's not carrier specific, so there shouldn't be any problems
3. ms exchange syc...how well it works? i am frequent flyer so i need to syc frequently to update my office mails.
It works well, but I don't think it's "push" based, like android's gmail app, so you'll have somewhat of a delay from when the email reaches your account and when it actually gets synced to your phone
4. how about the market place....is it all the apps visible....since my android phone does not show everything...
I'll be in mangalore in a few days, I'll get more info about that for you... If you had a rooted android phone you should've have been privy to all the apps in the android marketplace
5. how about the bing map...is it covered all the cities in india?
Not sure, I'll get back to you on that
Sadly, I'm not a fan of this Windows OS, it may be a touch smoother than the Android OS, but it just doesn't seem powerful enough.
hey thanks xxvtcxx ....it was great help....i understood after reading your description....thanks for spending time for me...
Actually almost a year i was using android phone.....few things i felt very sad...
1. not able to udate the latest version like other phones...i could manage to update unofficial versions...but didn't work as official version.
2. its very slow...more than 2 year i was using iphone..it was better in speed....but speed of the android hurts more.
3. its not stable...some days it works fine some days not......slow hangs in between and restarts automatically...
4. i have rooted my phone but i am not able to see or add the black market applications...
after seeing some of the review of hd7.... i was impressed....so i though i can try...
once again i would like to say my thanks...also i would like to know which network provider gave you hd7?
cheers
From an HD7 user
Hi,
I live in Nagpur, India and use an HD7.
So some updates:
1. Zune works perfectly fine.
You can see the apps on the marketplace only if you have the latest version i.e. Mango, but it is available only to developers currently, but there is a hack for Zune on desktop through which you can install apps, its no biggie.
XBOX live works perfectly fine.
BING maps are pretty good, very detailed, even for Nagpur. But the local businesses are not mapped out, you can download a Google maps app and work with them though.
MS Exchange will work fine for your scenario.
Let me know if you have more specific questions.
Great help manishkungwani....i am now very clear about xbox , zune and market...thanks for your detailed descriptions....your help much much appreciated.
Cheers

Other than the 1020, all other Lumia's are waiting on the carriers to fuc$ around for the next 6 months. I hate US carriers.
keep an eye on ncs. I'm sure we'll see them creep up on there before being released ota.
Yep, or you could try the Nokia Software Updater for Store. Its a lot simpler to use and it will actually tell you and download the newest firmware when available, but most of the people reading this already know that....
Waiting for the Black Update on meh 928.

For now, only 1020 and 925.

I have a Lumia 720 as business phone and I hope that next update will bring the possibility to select attachment with the mail client. I don't care all the other new features I read on latest news.....
Currently I can only select pictures as attachment on mail which sound strange for me it this is considered a business phone.
I guess we should wait for users getting the update to confirm that this feature will be included now.
Just because your company calls it a business phone doesn't mean Microsoft considers it one. From the beginning, MS unapologetically marketed Windows Phone as a consumer phone. They focused on personalization, user-friendliness, and social features but neglected business features like VPN support, encrypted email, mobile device management (WP7 didn't even support encrypted storage at all), and attachment support (although you can attach Office documents from within the Office hub).
Updates and new releases have slowly improved this area, and future versions will improve on it further (S/MIME encrypted mail and mobile device management are both said to be coming this year, along hopefully with VPN and better WiFi security options) but to call WP a business OS at this point in time is silly. It's a personal, consumer OS that has support for some business features, much like iOS was a few years after its initial release.
Define the problem, not the solution...
You can of course attach other files to email via WP8 (and 7.5 for that matter). If you're trying to work with PDF/DOC/XLS/other office files, you need to go to office, bring up the context menu on the file that you wish to send and click Share... This will allow you to send the file.
If you wish to share files via SkyDrive - this only sends a link or uses the Share functionality from SkyDrive.com.
I guess if you think about it logically, you define the problem - sharing a file; not the solution - adding an attachment to an email.

Thanks for the hint. I mean that if you like to reply to a discussion and attach a document, perhaps saved from another mail, for my understanding this is not possible currently. Starting a new mail and attach a document or share from office is fine but in a regular use is not a typical use when you should follow up an open discussion with an existing distribution list instead of opening a new one from zero.
