[Q] Copying bootable SD Card w/ Honeycomb - Nook Color General

So I'm a NewB and managed to get DeeperBlue's v4.0 on a 16gb class 2 uSD card and IT WORKS!!! Even beyond that - I got Android market installed and now with Amazon's market (launched today), I've downloaded and installed swiftkey, and a number of other apps not avail in the android market. THis is a perfect device. Now ... I want to make sure I have a backup of my SD card in case something happens, i can quickly stick a new card in and go. (NOTE: - I bricked my laptop/XP in the process which I have since recovered - - - i said I'm newb...). So I dont care to go back through installing Java, Android SDK, etc.. if I can simply image one card onto another. Particuarly since I have several apps with all my configurations and after taking hours to get this all setup - i simply want to create a duplicate uSD. any help would be GREATLY appreciated... THanks in advance. PS... with everyone creating bootable uSDs my guess is there will likely be others interested in doing the same.

1 - Go to Softpedia.org or equivalent and download FREE Win 32 Disk Imager application (for Windows).
2 - Insert MicroSD card into a USB card reader and insert that into PC USB slot.
3 - Start Win32DiskImager, and make sure that the Disk Letter is the one of your MicroSD card (this step is IMPORTANT!)
4 - Type a name and add .img in the field of the program for an image file name. You can also select a folder on your hard disk using the Browse button.
5 - Click ON READ (not write) and your microSD card will be backed up as an .img file.
6 - Exit
7 - Click on "Safely Remove Hardware" and select the disk letter of your USB reader.
8 - Do it all again, except that:
a - use a blank MicroSD card
b - use the Browse button to select the same .img you created earlier
c - use "WRITE" this time (not read) to burn the .img file to the new MicroSD card.
So, nothing else is needed except a PC with a USB slot, a USB MicroSD card reader (often included free with the card), and Windows (you could even use the stock IE to go to softpedia.org).

Thanks for your quick reply! My hope is my newer higher class card will result in faster performance.

The best way to format an SD card in Windows is a program called "SDFormatter" which is a free product of the SD card manufacturers association, which is at:
sdcard.org
You can download the latest version, 3.0 there.

Help Upgrading my Micro SDHC Card

I know there are other posts on this, but, I still need some concise advise.
I am replacing my 2GB card with an 8GB Card and I am struggling with how to backup and restore the data to the new card.
Newbie Steps taken so far:
1. Downloaded Memmaid to format the 8GB Card but it was already formatted to fat32. Free trial version so no lost money.
2. Attempted to get sprite software installed and it doesn't install properly (used the "free" HTC version that they sent as a remedy).
3. Downloaded the latest SPB Backup software and backed up the data on the storage card to the 2GB storage card and to my c drive on the PC.
4. Copied the backup file to the new 8GB card and tried to restore it but it doesn't seem to be restoring it to the 8GB card. I don't think the software will restore the file from the PC to the phone card. Stuck here.
Clarification: The SPB software seems to go through the motion of restoring all the files but they are not showing up on the 8GB Card.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

Using backup programs to replace cards is toooo much hustle. I hope you own a card reader. Just copy all the files from your 2gb card to your computer using a card reader and then copy them back to your 8gb card. Simple as that
I don't understand your point...
You just bought a new microSD card and want to transfer the files from the old one to the new one?
If yes, there's no need to do backups and whatever... Just put the old card in your PC reader, copy everything to a folder, pur new card in the PC, copy everything from that folder and you're done.
The card isn't "linked" to the phone in any way - you can remove it and swap it with an other one at any time. No phone backup or whatever to do, removing the card doesn't affect what's on the phone itself (everything but the "Storage Card" folder)...
Thanks
I used the active sync explorer to copy all the files up to my PC off the 2GB and I noticed it said something about converting them and then I got an error about 1 file (index?) file so I started to assume you couldn't just copy it like that.
But, I will simply do what you both suggested and copy off the 2GB and paste to the 8GB card.
Thanks.
8GB Class 6 Card
By the way, New Egg sold me an Adata ,Class 6, 8GB card for $29.99 plus 3.95 eggsaver shipping.
Pretty good deal.
What about programs stored on the card

I have been wanting to do this same thing too, but I am wondering what needs to be done with the programs that are installed, and run from the card? Do they need to be removed, and re-installed?
As long as everything is in the same place on the new SD as it was on the old SD, all your programs will work
Some comments:
Some PC readers have a problem reading > 2GB
Copying LARGE files/data through active sync may fail
In case your card reader doesn't fail your fine if it fails to read do the follwing:
Download Softick Card Export II, trail is good for 15 days.
Install Card Export on the DEVICE
Start Card Export, your SD card will be a USB removable drive in Windows
Copy all files to a folder on your PC
Stop USB
Stop softick
Power down phone (!)
Remove SD
Insert new SD and power up phone (simply ignore warnings from programs which may have been installed there and don't panic if icons don't show up) SD should come up with the same name "Storage Card"
Start Softick
Copy files back
Done
Windows Backup is the way to do it.

Windows XP includes it's own backup utility which can do this easily and quickly (and keep a simple archived copy on your HDD in case the card/phone looses data - this has happened to me and others here), just put your memory card in its USB reader. There's no need to use third party software for simple stuff like this. I impagine Vista would also have a similar backup utility but I'm unfamiliar with that OS.

[Q] What happened to my sd card?

Yesterday, I rooted with autonooter 3.0 after upgrading to 1.1 (the directions on android central now say 3.0 will root 1.1). I have an 8gb sd card (class 4).
Everything went fine (mostly, I'm still working out the kinks, like youtube app not working), I'm rooted. Mission accomplished.
But my SD card capacity went down to about 40 mb. Even when putting it in my computer, it only reformats to 40 mb. How can I get this back up to 8 gb?
All I did with the card was burn the autonooter to it and root the nook. any help before I bring it back to Best Buy?
Same thing happened to me. I had to use a partition program to delete the 40 meg partition and then create a new partition to include the whole SD card. Once I did that I was able to format the SD card and use it again with full capacity.
You need to format the SD card with the nook color itself. With the SD card in, navigate to settings -> device -> SD card -> unmount, then format. that should do it. By the way, this info is all over the forums. lurk/search more.
The easiest way that I've found to re-format SD cards with multiple partitions is to use linux and any disk manager/fdisk tool.
That said, there is a tool called "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool" which you should be able to find using google. That will instantly re-partition the disk for you in Windows (you will have to right-click and select "Run as Administrator" if you are using Vista or Windows 7). Be sure to select the filesystem that you desire (FAT/FAT32/NTFS - I would use FAT32) Hope that helps getting your SD card back to normal!
Thanks everyone. I did search, but now realize it was only with half an ass.
Formatted the card through the nook and it shows up with 7+gb now.

[Q] Can I transfer apps in current SD card to newer Card?

I currently have a 32 gig card but want to buy a larger 64 gig card. Can I simply copy all contents of my SD card to PC and then paste them back to the new 64 gig card? Will all my apps and their databases installed on SD card still work? Or are apps tied down to the SD card or the device for security. Have 8.1 installed on my Ativ S.
Thank you!

I Suggest 2 Ways .
I think both of them work for you .
1.Copy apps to phone storage and move them to new sd card
2.copy WPSystem in your old sd card to new one (maybe 1% this not work but not a bad try )

Ah but the amount of internal phone storage is less than the size of my current 32 gig sd card so I will not be able to move back to phone all my apps and their data.

so lets test copy wpsystem folder ?
Back from my hd2 days we used to clone the smaller card to the bigger card. Bigger card will then show in your case 32gb. Then use a partition manager to expand the size of the partition. Used to work with wp7.x not sure of wp8.
Wouldn't see why it wouldn't work since it doesn't need to read any info on the actual partition it just copies whole thing to computer then copies whole thing to new card. Then expand it to your cards size.
Back then if you just copied using file explorer it would give error on start up but wp7 on an hd2 is WAYYY different not sure how much wp8 checks sd cards like that.
@reeg420 probably has the right idea here. It *might* work to just copy the filesystem contents, but if you want to be really sure you should copy at a lower level. Note that this will wipe the new card completely! I make no promises of this working in the case of an encrypted (BitLocker'd) card. Here's one way you could do it, if you have access to a Linux/OS X system:
* Insert the first SD card and figure out what device it maps to (I'm going to assume /dev/sdb for this tutorial).
* If the SD mounted automatically, unmount (eject, or 'umount' command) it.
* In a terminal, figure out where you'll want to place the temp file (this step can be skipped if you can mount both cards at a time, but that's rare). It'll be the size of the first card (32GB). It could be something like /tmp/sdclone or ~/sdclone or /dev/sdc if you're doing a direct copy without a temp file.
* Use the dd command ('man dd' if you want to learn more about it). For example:
Code:
dd if=/dev/sdb of=/tmp/sdclone bs=16m
* Once the dd command finishes (assuming it finished without errors), pull out the first sd card and put in the second (assuming you didn't direct-copy).
* Again, unmount the sd card if it auto-mounts. Then dd the temp file back onto the sd card (just switch the paths of the 'of' and 'if' parameters).
* Once the copy finishes successfully (you may want to try re-mounting the card to make sure it worked!) you can delete the temp file.
Of course, this will just give you a 64GB microSD card with a single 32GB partition and 32GB of unusable space. At that point, you can extend the partition into the remaining space. There are various ways to do this - on Linux you might use the 'parted' command or one of its graphical front-ends (gparted/qtparted) - but the easiest is probably to put the card in a Windows machine (or reboot into Windows if you're dual-booting) and use the Disk Management console ('diskmgmt.msc', if you want to use Search or Run).
A card cloned in this way *should* work just fine in your phone, but I haven't tested this.

[Q] External SD card not recognized

Hello everybody,
I'm trying to get a new microSD card (8 GB class 10 microSD HC from Kingston) to work with my GT-I9000 (Custom ROM Mackay CM9 2014 1.7; freshly installed from stock GB). The card doesn't seem to get recognized and is not usable.
In storage settings there's an option to mount an SD card. When I press it, it says 'preparing SD card', after which nothing happens. In WRTP the card is also not recognized. Another SD card (2GB class 4), however, works flawlessly with the current setup.
When connected with my PC via a USB adapter, the 8GB card is recognized and usable without any problems.
I already repartitioned and formatted (FAT32) the card multiple times using Minitool Partition Wizard and Windows 7's formatting tool, as well as SDFormatter.
Does anybody know what might cause this problem? What else can I try to get this card to work??
Thanks in advance.
Simple Fix for this. Keep in mind that smart phones are
computers and the SD cards are physical memmory and
like hard drives, they require regular maintenance.
First take the SD cad out of the phone.
You will then need to insert it into a PC of some sort. I
had to go out and buy an adapter to insert it in the SD
slot on my laptop. You can usually find a cheap adapter
in any store that sells digital camera supplies. I found
one at Walgreens for $8 with a 2MB micro SD.
Third step (Optional). Copy all the data from the card
into a folder on the PC in order to back up your data.
Fourth Step run a scandisck on the card. In windows
Right click the drive then choose "Properties". Click the
"Tools" Tab and you will find an Error correction section.
Run the error correct and make sure you choose the
"Automatically fix file system errors". This should take
just a couple momments to run. DO NOT CHOOSE THE
BAD SECTOR OPTIONS AS THIS WILL TAKE FOREVER TO
RUN.
Once this is complete. Remove the card from your PC
insert back into the phone and boot up. You should be
all fixed.

Thank you for your reply.
I did what you told (plugged the card into my pc with an adapter and ran scandisk, which ran successfully without finding any errors), but the card is still not used by my phone.
Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestion. I deleted fsck_msdos, rebooted and tried to mount the card a couple of times, but sadly the problem persists.

[Guide] Note 4 External SD Fix For exfat formatted SDXC and U1 Higher Than 32gb

Nice Day Guys And Fellas!
I'm Here Today With Another Guide, hope It will find people who need it and be useful to them.
I found the possible solution for Note 4 SDcard Issue after dealing so much with it, posting here it may help some people.
History :
If you own an SDXC or 64GB SD card or higher with exfat you probably faced suddenly disappearing all the sd card contents where says the sd card is empty and after a reboot it shows the content, Or either later indicates SDcard is currupted, mine started with this issue right after buying a fresh SDXC and formatting it using Windows, Note 4 and etc goes to same scenario after some time, it actually happens because Note 4 and Windows formatting SD Card using exfat FS.
In this guide you need a windows PC or TWRP or Mac at your choice.
Steps to fix the issue :
I assume only high speed sd cards (SDXC and U1+) with exfat larger than 32gb are problematic with note 4 and smaller size than 64gb can be formatted to Fat32 without any tools already in Windows, so this guide is intended for high end ones, like the one i had Silicon Power SDXC U1 Elite class 10
Metod 1: (recommended)
1. Detach your MicroSD card (most known to be problematic type sd is SDXC)
2. Insert it to SD Adapter place to your laptop (if your computer has no dedicated sd slot attached to motherboard better use a laptop otherwise use Card reader) and remember drive letter
3. Store your sd content to your pc to restore later.
4. Download EaseUS partition master (free or other type) all will do the job
5. Right click on the right drive letter corresponding for your SD Card and select Format
6. Give it a name Like "SDcard" or what you like then select Fat32 for file system, finally select 64kb for cluster size, and press OK button
7. Finally press the apply button in top left and magic happens
8. Now you can place back your files, your sd card is ready.
Method 2 TWRP
1. Backup your data in an OTG drive or Internal storage or cloud.
2. Boot into the TWRP select wipe menu
3. Push advanced wipe, select MicroSD card, push change File System button.
4. In this menu choose Fat and press the button, wait for it till the a message says successful appear.
5. Now boot to your system and you'll notice it's fixed and you can place your files back.
Method 3 Using Mac OS X:
If you own a Macbook or iMac or anything similar just attach your SD card to it using its Adapter then run the "Disk Utility" app in others folder or type it in Spotlight (don't forget to take a backup already) then Select erase button on the sd card and use Fat in the menu, just you need to do it Twice, then you'll good to go.
I was able to do that in Sierra with latest updates.
As the final note let me know your experience with this guide and if it helped you or unfortutly not.
If you find this article helpful don't forget to :good: press thanks button or send me some good and positive energy :fingers-crossed:
I have also a solution for sd card write permission, if needed i can mention that, but the workaround is not mine work.
I always use sd formatter 4 from sd association or formatting in Smartphone
64gb sandisk extrem - no Problem
This happens on my Note 4 Exynos N910C sometimes, with my Samsung 128GB Class 10 MicroSD card. But only when my phone is unplugged. It will sometimes show the card as having no contents (Gallery and other apps don't show SD card photos or videos, etc.) and to fix it I either have to unmount and mount the card, or reboot.
Is this the same issue?

Or is it a real fix for sdcard writing permission on MM and higher?

I have formatted the micro-SD card as you say, and when I rebooted my Galaxy Note 4, half of the things I had previously saved disappeared.
