So this may be a weird request but I'm have a nook color setup with a dualboot nookie Froyo. The stock portion if for someone else to use and keep as "normal" as possible however I use the nookie Froyo side of things.
Question is can I map the hardware volume buttons for menu and back and only have it affect the system when booted to Froyo?
also I can't seem to find the old links for how to map the buttons.

is it possible to get the same softkeys from the archos 70 series onto the nook. im not really a fan of the current soft key solutions and archos seems to have found a legitimate solution that works really well. it would also be a big plus to get rid of the regular nook bar at the botto or would this only be possible on a custom rom?
Try button Savior for soft keys..its great.
//from the nook COLOR
I'm using button savior and like the way it works except it doesn't work for me all the time. For example last nigth I was playing with the SNES Emulator and loaded a game, I brought up button savior to go back and it wouldn't work. The only button that would work was the home button.
you can use home switcher to set it to the n button so that way one click brings up the menu
I don't have a issue with the way the buttons are brought up just the fact that they don't work all the time when they do come up.
i understand about button savior and all that but i find the built in softkeys on archos tablets to be a much more enjoyable experience. ive used my friends achos 70 and they are very convenient and add up to being alot better then button savior. just wondering if this could be ported to the nc
wouldn't it be easier to make the current nook taskbar system persistent/have the back and menu buttons all the time?
I found a thread that did just this, look for nook color soft keys. The only problem is the never worked for me, if you can find a way to make these apps to work please post here, because I as would like the aoftkeys from the archos devices and even a notification bar on top? Just s you know
Hi, is there a way to change the buttons in the bottom black menu on a stock rooted nook? Not sure what the proper term for that menu is. But it needs a back button. I don't like having softkeys running and would prefer to just add the button to the strip at the bottom of the screen.
Thanks.
Personally, I don't get everyone's fascination with soft keys on a stock-rooted nook. You can just swipe right to left on that bar you are talking about and it *is* a 'back' key. I shut off soft keys right away and have yet to actually need it.

Click to collapse
I think it's mainly for apps that use full screen. Since you have access to the Market, and there are so many apps that use full screen, it's a must have. For example, Angry Birds. With just the hardware key, you would not be able to go back or use the menu. Also, any non native nook apps lose their menu without them. For things that came with the nook, it doesn't matter.
Hello,
i am thinking buying the Nook, but i saw that the standard buttons don't exist.
If the Nook is rooted and without the standard Android buttons, would the overall experience again be ok?
Thanks!
You simply have to install Softkeys and you'll be just fine

ok thanks
So in a way it can be altered, thus no big issue in order not to buy the tablet...
I believe there are some tablet tweaks you can download too that add soft keys right along the notification bar.
Root it with CM7 and you'll have your buttons at the bottom of the screen
If you root the stock BN 1.1 build with Autonooter 3.0 it installs softkeys for you. Just set it as your launcher app and you'll always have access to the default buttons when you need them.
The soft key will be installed once you root the tablet.
There is also some tweaks made by a guy here about changing the key mapping of your nook (if you like hard key)
I have the Official HP TouchPad Wireless Keyboard and I'm running cm9 0.6
Some keys on the Keyboard are non functional with ICS. For example
Brightness Control
Back and Forward Music
Notification Key
Card View Key (Could be used as home button)
Virtual Keyboard Toggle Key
and some others I cant think of
My point is, how can I make these keys functional to actually work
and
Is there any way someone could probably develop a driver that can be flashed via Clockwork Mod Recovery as a ZIP?
It would be a great help to us TouchPad Users running CM9 ICS

I'm actually very curious about this as well, I own the HP touchpad keyboard too and I really like it, it works really well on WebOS but when it came to android, many of the buttons don't work and it would be really great if these buttons could be remapped in some form or another.
Yeah, I would be interested in this too.
Some of the keys are easily fixable by editing /system/usr/keylayout/qwerty.kl - such as the media back/forward buttons. There's a keytest app out there which will capture keystrokes and spit out the numerical codes. You can then edit these codes in together with the desired commands into the kl file.
Other keys (keyboard toggle, brightness toggle etc...), however, do not trigger numerical keycodes at all when pressed; they seem to be using some WebOS specific command, or the Android driver simply is not written to recognise these codes. It looks like the driver would need to be modified for those keys to work - but I am no expert.
I'll try and post an edited kl file with all the keys which are recognised working later.
I have no idea on Android inputs work, but in Linux/X server there was a command line command that allowed you to directly capture keystrokes/events from a keyboard. Does android use X?
Just so you know, this thread will probably get moved, but I thought I would provide a link before it does.

I havent applied this to CM9, but I would imagine that it shouldn't be too different.

Try using this app:
External Keyboard Helper
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...id.hwkeyboardhelperdemo&feature=search_result
You can use it to remap keys into android. Please report back if it works, as I want to buy a keyboard for my tablet, but dont want to deal with useless keys
I did find this review in the UK that mentions this app does help remap and get those uesless keys working:

This high quality Bluetooth keyboard measures 28.5cm by 13cm and weighs about 360g, including the two AA batteries that are supplied with it: slightly longer than my tablet is wide, but still small and light enough to carry round.
It is solidly made, matt black metal rather than plastic, with a stylish curving shape firmly supported on rubber feet - no wobble even on slightly uneven surfaces. The slope is perfect for fast typing. The keys are low profile and short-travel, full size, responsive and quiet. No sign that any of them is likey to come loose. There is no numeric keypad, but there is a row of function keys at the top to control the tablet - search, brightness, volume, on/off etc. Battery life is claimed to be about six months as the keyboard powers down when not in use and comes back to life as soon as you press a key.
The keyboard paired with my Sony S and with my Galaxy (both Android devices) without fuss and worked immediately, although three or four key mappings needed adjusting to match the GB layout. For this the External Keyboard Helper app is highly recommended - you just press "autodetect keyboard" and everything comes right.
As other reviewers have mentioned, there is no on/off indicator. The light next to the on/off switch on the underside of the keyboard seems to show that the device is visible for pairing, rather than that it is on. Again, the External Keyboard Helper is useful here because it flashes up a discreet message when a keyboard is not detected. I only found the lack of a light a problem on one occasion - the second time I used it. The batteries supplied were flat, so nothing worked. Fortunately, before hurling it at the wall, I remembered the old principle "check the simplest explanation first".
The lack of a caps lock light I did not find a problem - this probably depends on your style of typing.
Excellent value for money.
So I have been using the stock reader to read books since I rooted my NST, but have no way of going back in it I have the top left page turn button configured for back in Android, but the library app doesn't recognize this. I also have lost the software back button in the bar at the top of the screen. Any ideas?
try to fix permission or remap buttons through nook touch tools and then reboot
I'm guessing that you don't use Button Savior, then? Well, if you can get to the Nook Touch Tools, you can set one of the other physical buttons to home.
