Gurus,
I have a Streak 5 and am wondering if streak 7 is good with respect to resolution 480 x 800 like 5? I have seen a couple of reviews where screen size and low resolution of the streak 7 makes some pics and text look pixelized. So owners of streak please advice.. Would it help me if i changed the dpi to a lower number and get more screen landscape? or not..
Would resolution matter soo much if you chage the dpi? Please advice.. and help greatly appreciated..
If it is good.. i want to jump on it for the dual core and looks..
I think the screen is great given the price and feature set... the Streak 7 is a real diamond in the rough...
I really like the streak 7. It's my first tablet and I have read a lot of people complain about the resolution. For me, for that size screen it's fine. I dont see it pixelate or anything like that. I also play Dungeon Defenders but its one made for the tegra 2. I also have it on my mytouch 4g and the difference is crazy! on the streak 7 it's console quality! The only complaint I really have with it is the battery life. people complain about the res but come on it's a 7 inch screen. I think on a 10 inch screen or bigger the resolution would be more noticeable but on a 7 inch screen it's just fine.. people just like bashing it.. because well.. it's dell.. lol

+1 I dont think it gets the credit it deserves because of the dell bias.. I think if some other company released the same thing it wouldnt have gotten such horrible reviews.. I read engadgets review but then I started reading other engadget dell reviews... they always have something bad to say about whatever they are reviewing..
plus once this baby gets honeycomhb then we will see the real power of the streak
Turning a sidekick line into a ds7. Was worried about screen resolution, but everyone here isn't worried so I'm gonna take the plunge. Best tablet for the price considering the tegra 2 processor

After you flash the new upgrade with the tweaks included, you are HIGHER then any other device on the quadrant scores. I reached 2200 last night. Which OEM defaults only gave about 1500. So yes, Monster madness, Crazy Snowboard, Dungeon Defenders, all play like a PC quality game. Its very nice.

I make and receive phone calls just fine using Google voice and sipdroid. It works with the speaker/Mic or ear phones/mic
well actually i wanna use it in India where 3G is still initial stages and price sucks.. moreover google phone and sipdroid wouldnt work here..
I would have said get the Galaxy Tab as it has a better screen and a longer battery life. Also more support here and also can be made to make phone calls. While the streak 7 has very good specs its screen resolution hurts it and makes it look dull next to the Galaxy Tab.
I think your experience will depend on what you are looking for. I don't really notice a difference in graphics, as I am not trying to watch HD movies (lower res movies are ok on a 7" scree) or edit photos. I am happy with the streaming content I have seen so far, global-tv in canada and youtube.
The only drawback I see on this device is the battery life, which has been much improved since the update and that you can't charge it via your PC. Otherwise this has been exactly what I was looking for. On a bang for you buck, this seems to be the best on the market for its price, given the 4G, SD card, "future" upgrade to 3.0 and overall quality.
A very happy streak user.

tab doesn't have the tegra2, means less games, no netflix going forward....
Why would I buy a tab for 200 when I can get the ds7 for the same price?

Not really much better than the Dell Streak 5
The Dell streak 7 is not that much better than the Dell Streak 5. It has a slightly larger screen (5 in. vs. 7 in.) Comes with Android 2.2, (Dell streak 5 also does, but this was an update). It doesn't have a faster processor or even 4g. You might as well consider a Xoom or waiting for another tablet.
I'm confused as to ur comment. The streak 7 has a tegra2. And 4g. Did u mean that's the only difference from the streak7. And I would wait for a xoom but I'm not a fan of the 10" form factor

The 7in tabs just seem like big phones. I'd rather have a 10in model.
does this one have phone capability too?
I generally don't go by reviews from the likes of Gizmodo but given a low resolution screen coupled with poor viewing angles is enough to make it a "no buy" for me.
Played with the Dell Streak 7 today along side a Galaxy Tab.
Aside from Asphalt 5 looking better on the tab, I liked the Streak for everything else over the tab.
So gamers might want the Tab but for other stuff I would go with the Streak hands down.

Highriser doesn't know what he's talking about as both the statements about what it doesn't have are wrong.
I'm not a fan of gizmodo or engadgets reviews either. Seem to apple biased to me and care way to much about small details. But that aside the only major concern I have is the batterylife. It seems pretty awful and was wondering what the chances are of a extended battery maybe 4000-5000 coming out soon. And whay about root?

Dell has an extended battery for the Streak 5,so one could infer that the same will be provided for the 7".... and click the developers forum for the Streak 7.... it's already been rooted, instructions are given there.
Check out the Digital Digest review on Youtube... unbiased and positive.
Didn't read gizmodo's cus they are ridiculous... and got pissed at the Engadget review because they shoot things down over trivial items such as "veiwing angles" which IMHO aren't even a factor for me when deciding to buy a device.
I have the Streak 5 because I want a tablet with phone... I tried the Galaxy Tab... nice, but no 3G Tmo phone access and too many hurdles involved in getting the phone working...
If the Streak 7 comes out with Tmo 3G access, might consider it. But I have to say I LOVE the Streak 5... perfect blend of portability and function to me.

On a positive note, Here is a decent review for a change.

I own a Streak 5, Streak 7, and a Viewsonic G-Tablet.
Facts about the Streak 7"
1-This DOES have the Nvidia Tegra dual core
2-Only has 256MB RAM
3-Battery life is poor (around 3 hours of regular useage (browsing, etc)
4-This unit is very fast
5-Display is good, but only 800x480
6-Evcellent g-sensor and accellerometer response
7-4G, I tested in a 4G area, and DL was 6.4Mb/sec, UL was about 1.4Mb/sec
Overall, I really like the unit, but am waiting for the LG G-Slate
I think the display is fine. Its actually the same ppi as the ipad and I have never heard anyone cry about the screen on that device.

Hello guys. I am a streak 5 owner that really loves his device. I'm thinking about getting the 7" but I want some real life opinions from real life users. Mainly, how does the 800x480 resolution translate on the 7" screen. I've read some pretty ugly reviews on the lower resolution, and unfortunatly there is no tmo service or stores in my area so I can't get my hands on one. At $299 (newegg wifi only) the lower resolution is looking better and better. So that said I'd like to have your input. Thanks in advance.

I have no problems with the resolution. And Amazon is now matching that Newegg price, BTW.
I got my husband and I matching Streak 7's for his birthday at the end of March. We are both very happy with them. They get at least a couple hours of use or more every day - from playing games, surfing the 'net, reading books, checking facebook, etc. etc.
It is a snappy little unit. So many great features. I compared the Streak to the Galaxy tab in the Tmo store (went back twice before I made my decision) and was disappointed in the Tab's slow, laggy performance. The screen was better on the Tab, but after side-by-side comparison, I chose performance over screen resolution. And I'm not sorry that I did.
I don't have an issue with the screen at all. Works just fine. Maybe it's not a gazillion resolution, but it's not like you can't see on it. You can. Just fine.
For the price of the Streak 7, I don't think you can go wrong.
The Galaxy Tab definitely has the better screen, but you won't really notice the difference unless you have them side by side. There's one viewing angle on the Streak 7 that's not great, but it's easily mitigated. The viewing angle is "down," when viewing in landscape mode. As an example of mitigating it, you can't see the screen very well if it's flat on a desk in front if you in landscape mode. However, you can simply flip it over (it'll auto-rotate) and it's great!
So, the screen isn't really an issue. Remember, the online gadget blogs are reviewing Galaxy Tabs and Super AMOLEDs and such along with the Streak 7. When you have all those side by side, the differences really stand out. When it's by itself, the screen on the Streak 7 is actually quite pleasant.
As for the rest, it's a very snappy little device. It's only running FroYo, but it still scoots. Once it has Honeycomb, it'll be perfect so far as software is concerned; but don't be fooled into thinking FroYo is a slouch. It's still miles ahead of the iPad UI.
The one, unequivocal shortcoming is the battery life. There are some little tweaks you can do to maximize it, but there's no getting around it: the battery life sucks. It's a trade-off for rocket-ship performance in a perfectly sized, perfectly priced device. I use mine for everything (phone, home internet, camera, alarm clock, mp3 player, etc.), and have found that, while certainly not ideal, the battery is livable. If you're going to have to go for long stints away from a power supply, this probably isn't the tablet for you.
Last thing: custom ROMs. This is another weak point for the Streak 7. We basically have one dev working on this; DJ_Steve. He's a great dev, but there's only so much one person can do. If you're looking for a Nexus or Droid 1 type experience with custom firmware and such, look more towards the Galaxy Tab or something like it. That said, the stock interface is great (ditch the Dell Stage UI and get Zeam or ADW Launcher), and Honeycomb will get here either through Dell or DJ_Steve, so what better could you ask for? If you've really into theming, though, shop elsewhere. This simply doesn't have the dev support right now.
That's about it for my impressions. Feel free to ask some follow-up questions; the community in here is pretty helpful and friendly. I typed all of this from my Streak 7, by the way, and it was smooth and easy to do. I really don't miss my work computer when I'm away from it.
Thanks a lot guys. Wow really sounds like a pick your poison kind of thing. For me personally performance is going to best screen res any day. I'm familiar with Dj_steve and his excellent work. I'm currently running one of his roms now. Really glad to hear good things about the performance. Looks like they streak 7 is in my near future. Thanks again guys, very helpful.

Dell Streak 7 a good buy
I have a few tablets and the Dell is a good size. You can carry it in your coat pocket or woman or man purse. The screen resolution is very good. I view the internet in desktop mode and I can read the fine print very well. I also like the full size SD card reader because I can dump my digital camera pictures when out in the field without the need of adapters. The Android 2.2 OS is good for me because I have hundreds of programs that run on it. The rest of the specs pretty much match the other tablets.
Just Got One
Could not resist the $299 price - bought at Staples retail.
I am looking at picking up an android tablet. I want one that is 7 inch or less screen. I have looked at the streak 5 inch, streak 7 inch, and the galaxy tab. I wanted to hear from streak users before purchasing. How do movies look on the streak? How are games. I know that it has a smaller resolution than the galaxy tab but does that mean games designed for the larger smartphones like the Evo will play fine on the streak? Most of the reviews tell you more of what it isn't rather than expounding on what it is. How good is the battery life in general? I only need a wifi version but I saw that the roms are for the ones with gsm.
Ive been having a great time with my dell streak 7 so far, screen isnt bad for watching movies or games at all, not the best screen but more than goid enough... Also uf you are looking to pick one of these bad boys up I can sell you one for a more than reasonable price email me if youre interested [email protected]
Btw it would be the dell streak 7 with tmobile 4g in new condition with all thw accessories
I was thinking about getting a wifi only version but I didn't know if that version has been rooted yet. I got a dell gift card for my birthday so it would only cost me $49 to get the wifi version but I want to at least be able to root it.

Ummm...colors on the screen are good, but you should watch movies head-on. The viewing angle isn't great. Games play well in general, and run smootly for the ones that run, but some games have issues (I think it's something to do with the graphics drivers or the Tegra 2 or something) causing games like The Sims and Need for Speed to show white textures. The battery life only gave me 3-4 hours when I got it, but since you have a Wi-Fi model, you can root it and disable cell standby, buying yourself a couple extra hours. I recommend flashing over it with Honeycomb. The "ROMs for GSM" thing is not a problem because you can remove anything you don't need (the T-mobile ROM, for example, is the regular Wi-Fi ROM with a different boot animation and some added t-mobile bloatware.)
If you are ok with hacking it, which can remove cell standby for battery life, give you Honeycomb, or any number of improvements, it's definately worth it. Even if you are going to leave it stock, it is better than most tablets in the price range, if you can get by the battery life and viewing angle. But, I recommend putting Honeycomb on it and removing cell standby. For $300, you can have a Honeycomb tablet running on a Tegra 2, as opposed to spending $800 for the Xoom, plus contract, for the same OS and processor.
I already have a T-Mobile G2 (with CM7 installed), and after playing around with the Streak 7 about three days (bought it for $200 at Staples)...I don't know if it was worth the purchase. I still have a little over a week to return it, and I'm highly considering it.
I tried using it both with the stock Froyo (bloatware removed) and with dj_steve's Honeycomb...but in both cases, my phone can do the same thing pretty much about as fast, and more serious uses (like gaming or web browsing) are a more convenient on my 11" laptop (Alienware M11x). Not to mention, I do intend to switch to Sprint (for unlimited data), and I'll likely be getting the SGII or Evo3D, so even if I don't have a dual-core Android device now, I will soon.
I mean, it's nice that it fits in my pocket (even if just barely), but even with the Wifi tweak for battery life, it's not as long as I'd like, and the screen quality isn't that great when in portrait mode.
Maybe I just haven't found the right uses or apps for it...
-I don't commute much, and even when I do, I can't imagine any legitimate uses when offline (since I'm not using my phone as a hotspot on the go) since I don't read much, and I prefer watching videos and playing games at home on my computer
-I'll probably be getting rid of my car soon, so using it as a GPS/media player for it won't work
-When around the house, I prefer checking email and whatnot on my computer
I'd say the only real use I'd see out of it is if I were to get a laid-back security job where I could just bring it there and play around or something, but at that point I'd probably be more inclined to get a bigger tablet (maybe with a keyboard/dock, like the Transformer) since I wouldn't be too worried about having to fit it in my pocket.
So...any opinions/suggestions? More specifically, any app recommendations (preferably for Froyo) that I should look into (not necessarily ones from the Market)? The Honeycomb ROM was a bit too buggy for me (stuff not resizing properly, freezing/rebooting with certain apps, etc), I'd rather wait for an official Honeycomb.
Its all about personal preference. Don't care for notebooks... too unwealdy. I like something that fits in my hand but isn't tiny like my phone. I also have a gaming desktop so I'm covered there. I like the pad with honeystreak 2.0 for casual surfing and gaming when I'm chillin on the couch or in the car when I'm not driving.

To be truthful, I don't have a need for the tablet either. Life was fine with my laptop. The only reason I got the Dell Streak 7, and this is my first tablet, is for casual web surfing and casual gaming. The 7 inch screen is perfect for this, the phone is too small and the 10 inch is too big for my taste.
I have found you can talk yourself into or out of anything. I have had mine 3 days and and already been on all 3 roms a couple more than once. I cant put mine down. Im a atay at home dad, own this, the 5, and an ipad and this is cool. Juat the right size. I read, watch movies, edited a document and played some fun tegra games like riptide. All for 200.00. Im very pleased

Honestly I own 4 tablets I kept getting different ones expecting some other wonderful thing to happen but in reality. They are all the same.
I have a rooted cyanogen mod 7 nook color, a elocity a7 terga dual core,a dell streak 7, and a acer iconia a500. and you know what the high end iconia can do that the rooted nook color cant? NOTHING thats right any app you want torun or anything you want to do you can do on any android device period.
They all do the same internet, they all do the same apps, games, same face book, twitter. blah blah blah blah.
ONly differences in any of them is screen and speed. and to be honest my gloified nook color ereader turned tablet is just as fast as and terga dual core. sure i am sure you can get some extra frame rates or some other spec that in the real world no one notices to go a bit faster on a more expensive unit but who cares really.
I found the best deciding factor on tablets is size,(10 or 7) screen clarity, and battery life.
your either a 10 inch tablet person or a 7 inch one me im a 7 inch fan (lol no ego here). battery life again too alot of people make this into a big deal but as long as it runs till i go to bed who cares i just plug it in till morning and go again who needs a tablet to run for 7 days with out plugging it in anyway.
and for screen well thats all relative lets use the acer iconia and the transforer for example the transformer uses 16 million colors and a ips screen but its viewing angles suck. now the acer uses 165 thusand colors and jsut a regular screen but its viewing angles rock so is there a difference? the human eye only sees like 150k colors at one time anyway so whats the use of a 16 million color screen?
Long and short you need to be happy with what you buy. but you sound like I use to be it just kills you not to have or try everyone of them and no matter what one you get your gonna wish you had the other. I bet you go through phones like water too. my frinds are like that they cant stand to have a phone longer then a month and they are off getting another one.
But truth be told they all do the same thing really they do... the new 700 dollar droid does nothing the old first gen droid cant do it just does it faster is all so is it worth it?
Doesn't sound like a good fit for you. I say sell it on CL for what you paid. It could make someone's day. Someone who would lay a little love and appreciation on it.
if you want to unload it for $200 i'll take it off your hands. the streak 7 is why i joined, actually rejoined this forum
Hi Guys
Im looking for a 'basic' tablet for my 8 yr old daughter for Christmas and I like the idea of the Streak 7. I appreciate that the screen resolution is not ideal for a 7" ...but will an 8 yr old care? I dont think so! Can you also tell me how good the wifi connection is.
I just need to know how well it plays Angry birds,Moshie Monster,Lego Universe and all the other kiddie games that kids adore.
Can someone give an honest opinion of its suitability. I have looked at loads of generic chinese tabs but too many of them get poor reviews.
Having had 3 dell computers which have served me well, Im once more heading in their direction.
Hopefully the streak will tick all my boxes so that my daughter will leave my Galaxy S2 alone. Thanks for your help

For productivity work, moving from Android 2.x to 3.x is like night and day, it's simply leaps and bounds ahead of froyo/gingerbread, but that's not what you're interested in. The screen on it isnt amazing, but it's not flat out terrible. But I really doubt you'd be able to find a better screen on a cheaper device.
Keep in mind that many of the super cheap tabs wont ever be updated/do not have market access. Even if there are many other alternative markets the android one is still by far the biggest/most important.
There are some games that are not compatable with the s7 with honeycomb installed, but the list is slowly shrinking as developers are making it compatable.
The S7's also one of the fastest (but not THE fastest) 7" tabs you can buy, and black friday is coming up and best buy (if you live in the USA) will be selling it with a black friday discount. If you buy it then it's nearly the same price as those cheap tabs you can buy.
Snag a S7 at $200 or cheaper and you'll be really hard pressed to find something to dislike about it, there's simply nothing that can compete with it at such a low price point. The closest would be the gtab 7, but even then it's still nearly $300.

Hi,
I have a Streak 7 and my son does as well. We both play lots of games. Angry Birds is just one of many. The streak will be a great tablet for your child as it also has some Dell toughness to it and it really is a great piece of hardware. The wifi works great. No issues at all in my house. I take it up stairs and watch movies, skype, etc... no interruptions.
i just heard toys r us is getting a froyo tab for kids, forgot where but im sure I saw it.
Thank you all for taking the time to respond to my questions, I'm extremely grateful . Im based in the UK so I'll hunt around for some discount codes at Quidco or other discount website.
Warm regards
Julie

Is that in the UK or the USA?
toys r us is a us chain, keep in mind that those cheap tabs have equally low end specs, depending on how demanding the game is, some might not be playable

and possibly maybe even an ipod touch?
my 3 y/o daughter watch movies, play educational games, listens to music, learns numbers and alphabet on streak 7 without any problems, she can handle honeycomb gui for herself!. but screen protector and good nonslip case are required for DS7 to survive in child's play ;-)
concerning resolution for texting/browsing/reading - you can always increase/decrease DPI to suit your daughter's eyes!
there are good resolution tuning utilites on the market...
