I'm running Apex 5.1, with Suckerpunch-Voodoo #11. I have been wanting to try a JPA modem. Will I have to switch to a reoriented i9000 kernel, or will it work with the Suckerpunch?
Also, does anyone have a link to a cwm jpa modem.
SuckerPunch-Voodoo is a reoriented I9000 kernel.
I don't have a link to this JPA modem you speak of, though this thread has quite a few other modems:

Can someone clarify for me what changes i need to make to install a vibrant rom on a captivate. Can i simply change the kernels or is it going to be more complicated?
Just the kernel to fix the home and back buttons. And other issues. Id use setirons kernel. It should have more in common with the vibrant than the captivate kernel. There is also DGs kernel for perception but you have to pull it from the .Zip. But i wouldn't really know for sure what will work the best. Be sure to report any unexpected issues. Eugene does great work. His eclair Rom were the best. But he hasn't posted any froyo Rom for the captivate.
Edit. If its not included id use the bell jk3 modem. You can open the .Zip and replace the zimage with the one from setirons or DGs kernel and the modem.bin for the bell vibrant jk3 Rom found in the modem thread.

Thank you I made some changes and will try it, worst case scenario Odin back to stock
OK, I'm running Cognition 3.04 with the Speedmod Kernal.
People are telling me they can't understand me on the phone. For what I've learned through flashing over the past few months and reading around, I believe I need a different radio. Am I wrong? If not, can someone point me in the right direction?
I've seena few references to radios on here, but never with a link or a better explanation as to what details I need to look out for.
Thanks for any help.

OK, so should I be looking for modems then? 'Cause I went through that thread and flashed both UCJJ4 and UCJI6 (one at a time of course) but neither fixed the issue.
the problem is not your rom, but your modem, i believe. try jl2, jk4 if you are on i9000 rom.

Hmm...Cognition is made specifically for Captivate...was it wrong to assume is was a i867 ROM?
Is there an easy way to tell on the phone which model my ROM is built for? The "Baseband Version" reads I897UCJI6. Is that a hint?
Thanks for your help guys.
Your problem is you're using an i9000 kernel with a captivate modem. Cog is considered a pure captivate rom, so if you installed speedmod (which is based on an i9000 kernel) you need an i9000 modem. I think JK4 seems to be the most popular

Arg! But I installed the Speedmod Kernel made for Captivate!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893880
This is so frustrating...I'm trying to not be a newb and figure this stuff out, but things that say they're for i897 aren't...ugh.
Well, I flashed JK4 and it works. So I guess the speedmod for Captivate isn't actually for Captivate.

Things that are for the captivate are for the captivate and the version of the speedmod kernel you flashed from the captivate forum is for the captivate, but...
What everyone is talking about above is what those things were ORIGINALLY designed and built for. In short most things out there were originally built for the i9000 (since AT&T is dragging their feet on releases) and then ported over to the captivate, meaning the code, config, etc. is changed a bit to work with the captivate. So what everyone is saying above is that speedmod started as an i9000 kernel and works best with an i9000 based modem.
Currently my SGS is on rooted 2.3.4 JVR. Is it possible to install/flash JVS's modem to JVR without bricking??

Yes you can. I have JVR Surface rom with JVS modem. Get it from Perka's filestash.
Second that: I have stock jvr pda with jvs modem and 1.6 semaphore with no problems so far.

I have already (2.3.3) DDJV5 modem based on Indian firmware ....thanks both of u though!!
I'm considering switching to ICS, but I'm wondering is there an ICS kernel that is based on I9000 sources? Like how we have JVU, JW1, etc. I9000 kernels? It seems that the most popular is Glitch, but Glitch is I897.
I also need a modem for ICS that doesn't give me the roaming message since I'm on Fido. Since modem works with the kernel, this means that if there are no I9000 based ICS kernels, then I can't use a I9000 modem.
glitch (and all cm kernels) are reoriented from the I9000 to work properly with the I897, they aren't based off of captivate anything, so you HAVE to use an I9000 modem, if you look all the modems posted in an aosp format are I9000
I'm on glitch with jk4
And also your phone wouldn't work quite normally if you flashed a real i9000 kernel

And you have to use the ones made for cm7. The cwm package has a different install script.
Not sure if this question is for here or the i9000 section.
At any rate, I have a Captivate i897 but I like running the i9000 roms. I am currently using Xcals reoriented kernel in order to get my screen to rotate properly, but would like to try other kernels.
Is there a list somewhere of other i9000 reoriented kernels for Gingerbread or do I have to go through each [Kernal] thread to try and determine if they are reoriented?
Thanks.

Super. Thank you.

He he said he is already running that, that's why i didn't mention it
