Just discovered something awesome can't believe no one else has talked about this for the Thunderbolt yet but if you install the gingerbread music player (linked below) and then go into your Google account settings you'll now see an option to sync music. This syncs to Google's new cloud service and once done can be accessed even when your music is no longer on your phone.

I just finished installing and running it, currently syncing to the 'cloud'. I didn't have any problems so far that I can see. I left my music in my isyncr folder and the player recognized it right away. I'm running Perfect Storm v1.2.
Im confused, it sycns what is on your droid to the cloud or what you have on your library at home?

On your phone. Then you can delete from your SD once you have it in the cloud..
Do we have a size limit?

I'm getting "there is a problem parsing this package". I'll try the download again.
No size limit that I know about yet. I know I have over a couple gig.

I cant seem to get mine working. The option in my accounts&sync is not there. Also, when I click account in the music app, nothing shows up.
Could it be that I didnt delete the older version of google music and have both installed?

I think that's it. On my X I had to uninstall the Gingerbread Music Leak before the new one would work.
It has a nice UI but I do not think there is a cloud to upload too. I only have about 25 songs and it has been syncing for 3 hours. I also signed into my google account and there is nothing there under settings that would appear to be syncing with my phone.
I see that its just an apk, do I have to be rooted for this to work.

I must agree with this. I have about the same number of songs and it just keeps on syncing. My path is sdcard/media/music just like the other thread said it needed to be for it to sync with the cloud and it's been syncing all night. I even did a reboot, removed the songs from my sdcard and then tried to stream them from the "cloud" and nothing shows up.
It's a nice music player but does not seem to be fully functional cloud sync at this time, (at least for me).
How is this different from AirSync for DoubleTwist app apart from being free? Also, do you think this will work okay in a non 4G area?

Why not get the Subsonic app. You can store music and videos on your home computer and watch & listen on your phone. The player is very nice, allows you to keep your SD card free and clear, it's free (small donation appreciated from dev and gives a few more options on the server side) and you can store as much as your PC can handle. Oh yeah, it's compatible with almost any platform.

I have been using this for over two years and have never had much problems. The only thing you really need is a static IP which I easily averted by creating a domain that uses DNSEXIT as its name servers. DNSEXIT uses your IP address for your domain and has an app you install on your server that updates the IP address everytime it changes so that your IP credentials are always correct. DNSEXIT is also a free service and I have been using this as well for the same length of time. Perfect combination if you ask me.
Just sayin'

Been using this for years.. Works great! But it is a Streaming server vs I think the Google sync actually copies the physical media to your phone. With Subsonic if you dont have a signal you dont have access to you library. Unless Ive been doing something wrong, and not using subsonic to its full potential?
Well I tried and couldn't get this to work and I downloaded this app called StartTalking it's a voice command app and I said play music and it said it needed a program called mSpot so I downloaded it and it has streaming as well as wireless syncing 5gb for free or 40gb for like $4 a month so pretty good and it has a pretty decent interface also I love the instant download feature it like databases your music and if you want you can download it to your phone from your computer! http://www.mspot.com

Ok so I wasn't sure if this goes in general, qa, or dev, but I figured this would be the most likely spot for an answer.
I have a home server set up & will shortly have a VPN running. Now my main question is this: I know the phone has the ability to connect to the vpn, but is there a way to stream music/movies to the phone? I having to hand pick each song I want to put on, so being able to access my collection remotely would be very nice.
Thanks!

This has nothing to do with development.
You didn't mention what OS you are running at home so all we can do is guess.
But FTP, Samba, DLNA - depends if you want to copy of stream and how much battery you want to suck down. Since you have a DLNA client - that would probably be the way to go if you want to stream music. or you could get a 32GB card and carry a lot with you.
If my first post didn't make me seem like a complete fool this one should make up for it. As far as I'm aware allshare only works via wifi, my goal is to stream via 3g. Using wifi tether on my captivate & setting up vpn allows me to stream to my ipad, but my goal is to stream over 3g to my phone.

When I say this I may be wrong and come off as stupid as you think you seem, but I can't imagine how that could be possible... And unless you have unlimited data (they didn't grandfather mine), that would sure eat up your 2gb pretty fast.
Really, I can see how it's possible, but not how it's easily done. Access web server from phone; apache maybe?
streaming to phone solution
Easiest solution so far is orb.com, but I personally would prefer a solution that worked on my LAN and just allowed use of samba services instead of using an outside service. Coreplayer was great on windows mobile.
Yea, I would love to do the same thing. I have over 100GB of music on my home server and have unlimited data. I hate having to pick out the music to put on my phone only to inevitably want to listen to something I didn't happen to pick.
I think it would be possible but I don't know if there are any applications that would allow you to do it.
Subsonic
Nice! Subsonic looks great. And it runs on multiple systems since I don't run Windows for my server.
Thanks AJerman
Hi,
I'm looking for software to sync folders from my PC to my Xoom. I just need to sync folders, not music or movies and don't need or want to use a service with online storage.
Best would be to have wifi rather than usb. Can anyone recommend a program?
Have you thought about using dropbox?
Multiplatform file syncing support for free!
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
Dropbox would be my advice also
I currently use dropbox on my phone and when I get a xoom next month I'll be using that also.
Also evernote for your documents.
I also use keepass for my passwords and store the password file in a private folder on dropbox so I can access my passwords from any location.
Sync your Xoom to your PC - Xoom as a file/media server - Great App!
I don’t often promote apps; but this one seems to have received little attention and I think it could benefit a lot of Xoom’ers…
I found a terrific app that allows me to sync the Xoom with my PC. Websharing File/Media Sync ($2.99 in the Market) is incredible. It allows you to establish your Xoom (or any other Android Device) as a file/media server on your wireless network. You can then use WebDAV on your XP, Vista, Mac, Ubuntu, etc. to connect your Xoom to your PC's file system. You can access your Xoom from your PC's browser. The browser interface is really cool with different interfaces for files, photos, music playback and video playback. You can also access the Xoom through File Explorer as a web share by Mapping a Network Drive.
I use Goodsync ($29.95) on my PC (supports WebDAV) to provide sync functionality. I set up two sync jobs. One syncs my documents folders and the other syncs the Xooms specific folders to create a full data backup on my PC. Both Websharing and Goodsync are "industrial strength" so you don't have to worry about FC's or corrupted data. The solution is perfect for my needs. I now have every work and personal document fully synchronized between my OG Droid, Xoom and XP Laptop. I also have the assurance that my Xoom's data is backed up in case I need to restore.
Developer's website here: http://android.nextapp.com/site/websharing
Another poster describes the app here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11968337&highlight=Websharing#post11968337

I've been thinking of trying Syncness (https://market.android.com/details?id=clay.world.syncness). I emailed the developer to find out if it was automated or not and got an almost immediate response (no, it's not automated yet -- all manually initiated at this point). It's not free but it's only about $2.
EDIT: It's a direct sync, not going through any cloud service.
synctoy 2 or double twist with airsync (but it sounds like you dont want to sync media, but actually folders.
Try GammaSync
For PC-to-Android folder synchronization (only one-way at the moment) I developed a free app which does not require external cloud storage services (like Dropbox or SugarSync). It's called GammaSync, and it's available on the Play Store. Maybe you'll find it useful

I have tried to follow the Tor re-routing, but every time I make the change, it gives me an error saying "tor no specified exit routers"
I would have to re-install the program. Everytime I open Tor Browser, and use IP Addres Locator it tels me the IP addres is in Iran, I haven't been lucky enough to have an IP addres from the US when I start up.
Did you have any instructions on how to use Tor in order to manage a US IP Address?

If you've got this far, you'll be fine now. The only time Google checks your location (as far as Music is concerned) is during sign-up and when you try and purchase music. For browsing and playing from your library online, and for playing your library on your device, there are no location checks.

I'm in Canada as well.
Months ago, I used a simple Chrome extension called "Stealthy" to spoof my IP. Basically, a click or two and I was done. And, as someone else mentioned, after you've signed up there's no more ip checks so I have that extension disabled.
Of course, you won't get the "My Music" tab if you visit Play from your PC. But, no problems if you go to the music url directly.
Hi, my Google Music Manager has stopped working over the last few days, the program won't open or get past a screen that says it cannot get an internet connection. I wondered if any other UK users had the same issue ?. I've tried disabling anything on my setup that might be blocking it, and haven't changed anything before this happened. It's frustrating because I was loving using it on my Nexus 7. Any advice would be appreciated as I'm baffled. Thanks.
Same problem here my Google Music Manger wouldn't connect to internet...
Any Solution.......
I'm still stuck, I've been talking to an english technology journalist who says he is still uploading okay, have spent many late nights this week on this, but totally baffled. It can't be a widespread problem else the forums would be full of chatter about this.
I've gotten round this by installing Ubuntu alongside my Windows XP installation and installing the Linux version of Google Music Manager - and it works !. If you look in the log file for Windows Google Music Manager mine is moaning about Root Ca Certificates and being unable to find an iTunes folder (well it's wasting it's time looking for that one). At least my Nexus 7 is slowly filling with music now.
Same problem with me too. It just says to check internet connection. :|
Then I tried it in Ubuntu but no luck there too.

You can't purchase music outside of the US. The steps required to use Play Music only give you the cloud service. You'll have to buy your music elsewhere for now.

You need a valid US address (hint: find one on a real estate site ). Then you must set this as your default address and billing address (with your normal credit card).. Then you can buy music. I've bought a few albums much cheaper than Aussie music sites. Oh, you also need to be on a US VPN to actually purchase music too.
Google have now fixed this. Just uninstall the program from your pc and redownload it from Google Music, the new version is working perfectly for me.
While I've tried most of the usual cloud storage services - Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive, SugarSync - I thought I'd try rolling my own, and it works! Yes it's easier with existing services, but just thought I'd have a go just to see if I could..
You can create your own cloud storage on Google App Engine using the open source CloudDav - the instructions on the CloudDav page make it very straightforward if you're familiar with the App Engine Python SDK. Just get the files from the repository (I used TortoiseHg to download to my Windows 7 64 bit machine), create the app on App Engine, edit the downloaded template to create a yaml file with the app name, deploy the app, and that's it.Took me literally just a few minutes.
It's easy to authorise user logins for any Google account, including Google Apps accounts on your own domains (I tested that too), and with WebDav File Manager on my N7 it's working fine.
Obviously it's free of charge only within the limits of the App Engine free quotas, but at least it's another source of cloud storage space.
Only problem was getting an @ character on the keyboard, believe it or not - copy/pasting that symbol was really hard to do, am going to ask separately about that!
Todo... to try with files encrypted with Boxcryptor on my PC. But can't see why it shouldn't work.
Those of you with a spare box could look into ownCloud. I think they have a Windows client, but I'm not too sure. I run it on my Linux server in my basement. If you set up a DDNS account (I used no-ip.com) and forward your server port through your router, you can essentially access your server via it's own URL, such as:
http://heresmyexample.zapto.org/owncloud
or whatever it may be.
The nice thing about ownCloud is the data resides on your server and your server alone. Of course, if your server blows up, you're toast, but it's another alternative worth mentioning. Mine has about 300GB free, so I basically have a 300GB cloud server to myself. I talked to a guy who had 8TB in his ownCloud server... can you imagine??
Pros:
You own it (therefore it's your data on your server, no where else)
You manage it (thefore it's your rules)
Your space can be exponentially higher than any other free service
Cons:
You own it (therefore you need to provide a spare box or build a new one)
You manage it (don't go tinkering in any core config files now, ya hear?)
Hard drives aren't free
Anyway, just another on the list of many. :good:

This is a bit cleaner because your phone sees it as local storage. You can still use your own server at home, but this way you can stream music, videos, book, whatever you want. And all of your apps can access the data. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tbiz...GG6dB9uixiT_-zNAopLpSrly2Ggb1bg&feature=inbox

Sounds good, ta, must try that. It's mainly the set-up time issue, including setting up backups too of course. It's the old adage about people not always taking backup seriously until they have a disaster... eg I moved to mainly Google Calendar a few years back after my computer died and I lost some days' appointments, as Google are more likely than me to backup (though I do backup my Google Calendar daily too).

I hear ya. Backups are key for any situation, no matter how big or small. My ownCloud server *is* my backup server, but that doesn't mean that's the end of the line for backups. My ownCloud info is then synchronized elsewhere so if my actual server blows up, I'm still in good shape. Of course, the average joe may not be as religious about backups as I am, but then again the average joe is unlikely to have any interest in their own cloud server either.
Like I said, just another option on the table, since I have little doubt there's a few users around these parts who might find ownCloud is exactly what they want. :good:

Hi, I'm wondering what's the difference between having a cloud and a VPN? I mean, what can you do with a cloud that you can't with a VPN? File sharing and stuff like that are already possible with VPN.

It really all depends on how each service is configured. VPNs have a lot more functionality than cloud storage, but they were both designed for different purposes.
If your only looking for file/folder storage go with one of the mentioned Google apps or storage services (like Dropbox).
If you need access to individual computers or programs/apps on your home network then go with a VPN.
VPNs can chew through data plans if your not careful, they have quite a bit of overhead that will make them feel slow as well. On the flipside a cloud storage service will be efficient & easy on bandwidth.

Do you have any spare computers at home? I don't know if I can link to other sites here but lifehacker has a lot of tutorials on how to do this. If you tell me what you have exactly I can see whats best for you

Hey Dennelly, I have my win 7 PC collecting dust. It has good two core cpu, I think 3.2 and good nvidia card with 512mb and 4 drives, 320gb primary and the others are 2tb, 1tb, and a 500gb.
Any steps or recommendations would be appreciated.

After doing some more looking (thanks again everyone for the discussion) I thought I would add a candidate called GoodSync to the mix. It can incorporate all the cloud services we currently use (dropbox, etc) with our home cloud solution.
Sorry I don't have enough posts to post the link.... effin noobs
I'm on tablet when I get on pc ill help you guys out

You don't even need a spare pc either. I have OwnCloud running on a VM on my main computer which is great for organising all my files and then I've combined that with Plex Media Server so that I can stream my movies/music easily. So if I want to download a file I access the owncloud directly and if I want to stream it I access it through Plex

how does it work on the wan side of things?
I've used a lot of the home storage solutions mentioned in this thread, but I always have a problem with having to have an always on computer in my home.
Has anyone figured out a fix for this?

This is a concern of mine too.
I'd like to implement a cloud server that doesnt use my home bandwidth.
For free too!
I think I know where this is heading....,

One possible solution is to use a router that has its own USB port. I have a dirt cheap belkin router with two usb ports that has TomatoUSB loaded to it. I then configure the firmware Ftp server for wan access. I can then access files on a USB attached storage device if needed via ftp. The down side is the speed is limited to your broadband upload speed. I cannot stream content across the internet, but I can copy content to and from my devices internal memory. I also have the added benefit with tomatousb of having a media server to stream content on the local lan.

Hi,
I have created a small html5 app that allows playing of local media on Google Chrome with playlist support. The Chrome tab can then be cast to Chromecast. This helps me play the huge collection of YouTube videos I have in my computer, on Chromecast. Just thought I'll put it on here for anybody that might find it useful.
Steps to use:
1. Open Google Chrome and go to sidscast . com
2. Browse for folder or files (Audio/Video) to add to playlist.
3. Play
4. Cast tab to Chromecast
Audio/Video Formats suppported: MP4, MP3, Wav, WebM and Ogg
Playlist support: Yes
Thanks!
Sid
Sounds promising! I'll try it when have a chance.

Works fine on Ubuntu....with Chrome
Been looking for something simple to allow playlists for chromecast....this works fine. Thanks
Works perfectly w/ windows 8.1 in chrome. This solved a very irritating limitation of existing casting software.
Thank you

You sir, deserve more recognition. This is beautiful. Thank you.
thanks given
Thanks so much for this, works really great for streaming my local MP3 files.
Question, would it be possible in a future update to support:
1) displaying embedded album art from the streaming song
-or-
2) specifying a directory of images that can be cast to display while the mp3 is streaming.
Would be great if it can cast photos.
Amazing, the first thing I tried worked. But I'm curious why this can't be run locally, couldn't you make a browser app? They have them, but none work. Not even Videostream (They say it's my network when I have no AV, no firewall, the ports forwarded in my router, and friends who can't get it to work more often than whenever the hell it wants).
You don't mention anywhere, so I'm curious just what info gets passed back and forth between me and your server while I'm using this.

Hey man, Videostream guy here. Is it just never playing the video?
The difference is how this uses the Cast Extensions tab casting method (WebRTC) instead. All you need to do, to do the same thing without this app, is drag and drop the video in to Chrome.
Our app needs TCP port access to your computer, in order to send the raw video data to your Chromecast.
Now, there's no reason why you should have been left hanging like this. If you like you can forward me your emails and I can look into why our support f'd up so hard. This is an easy fix. I can also do a remote desktop with you whenever you like and we can get this solved, asap.

Hey, thanks for the reply.
I've been getting replies, for sure (The replies come from freshdesk, signed Rahul Kayaith), but pretty much been given the idea that it's my problem, when I can reset literally every device on my network and it still not work (I even went so far as to open the ports in my router since he made it seem like the traffic needs to pass between their servers and my computer). I'm using literally no antivirus or firewall, just Windows Defender, I've added Chrome as an exception to Defender's scans, and my network is private/home. The app hasn't worked for me at all for a couple weeks now, when previously it worked intermittently. The port fix tool has never worked, not once since I got the Chromecast. (Before it quit working altogether, it would work seemingly whenever it felt like it. Nothing that I did on purpose seemed to work)
My friend has 3 Chromecasts, uses antivirus and spyware software, a different router/modem, and a different computer. The only thing we have in common is Windows 8.1, Chrome, the Videostream app. He says it also works only intermittently. I just don't see that the problem is on either his network or mine!
I did figure out that I could "save" the SidsCast page locally and run it and it works, so I don't need to worry about what's being sent to his server, and it's working with most types of video, but not all, so I have to be careful what I "acquire," but still more reliable than Videostream has been!

(I run Windows 8.1 too)
Yeah those are the generic fixes we give to people, Rahul is our local support guy we have working with us as an intern . Your router really shouldn't have anything to do with this.
What you could do is check (Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Firewall\Customize Settings) , or in your "Windows Firewall" settings go to "Turn Windows Firewall on or off" on the left, and make sure "block all incoming connections" is NOT checked on Public or Private.

My firewall is set to "off." I never use it, nor any third party firewall or AV. I've run through all of this with Rahul, at least since some time in March. And opening the ports in my router was just, let's say, a last-ditch effort to figure out the problem, since nothing else has worked.

Well, if you like we can try to do an ole Remote Desktop with TeamViewer if you like? If you're into it I can do it whenever. It's normally easy to diagnose as the developer. My email is up there ^--

Oh joy! I didn't think people were using it and finding it useful! Well, although I know this is a very late reply, but I'll answer anyway. There is no server. It's all client side. The only thing that it needs a connection to the internet for, is the ads at the side. So you can very well just have it work without an internet connection after the initial load. There's no data collection or anything of that sort.
