Hi, this morning my SGS seemed to have crashed during the night (black screen). Now I cannot boot anymore:
- Turn power on
- Splash screen
- After a minute or so it vibrates once, then later three times (as with some program crashing)
- Screen goes black
- It then stays in some loop of vibrating once and then three times forever
What I have tried:
- Factory reset (volume up+home+power)
- Clear cache and al data
- Remove battery for hours
- Charged battery to 100% and tried factory resets
- Reflash via Odin (Phone is not recognized by Odin)
- Emergency install via Kies (phone is not recognized by Kies)
I have standard ROM (I think JPY), it is rooted.
Anyone an idea?
Thanks!
this is exactly what happened to my phone yesterday... would appeciate any ideas as well

Yes, I tried to connect to Odin (after switching the phone to download mode with Volume down+home+power, but Odin does not see my SGS.
What is cwm?
Thanks!
For odin: check if you have drivers on pc for your sgs
CWM is clockworkmod recovery. It is a custom recovery that you use to flash unsigned zip files. You can install it via update from regular recovery, app called rom manager and like kernel via odin

Mine did the same thing today but I could not get into recovery. Went into download mode and flashed supercurio's jvk+hacks kernel and now I can boot again. I thought it was a bug with 2.3.3
Guess not. Last thing I did was reboot with quick boot.

Problem SOLVED!!
Themate1987's triggered me to do some more searching on this forum (' cause I did not know what cwm was) and I found two interesting things:
- SGS is extremely hard to brick (so I decided not to give up yet)
- Some post about a faulty USB cable.
So I exchanged my official Samsung USB-cable for and old Logitech mouse USB cable I found and suddenly my PC saw the phone. Of course I had to install the correct drivers (used my girlfriend's SGS and Kies for that), but after a lot of connects and disconnects I was able to connect the phone to Odin.
Although I prefer standard ROMs I installed a new kernel and Darky's ROM and now I am fine. I might even keep Darky's ROM, because indeed it seems to be extremely fast and has some nice features.
Once again: thanks everyone!

My Voodoo Control Application (came with Darky's ROM) already says"Status: Ext4 lagfix active"..
I guess all was done automatically.
Yes but turn off lagfix before you flash non-darkys rom

My phone is doing the same thing however mine quickly goes to the "ursa minor" screen before doing the one vibe then 3 short vibes. It does this 13 times, then vibes once and restarts. I have tried booting into recovery mode and download mode, and nothing is working. when I pull the batt, plugin the USB cable, hold down the vol - and + and power, then put the batt in, it just stays on the charging screen. I've hunted the threads for 4 hours trying to find a solution, and I don't know what do to. Do I need to make a jig to fix it now?
Pull usb out then pull battery, then replace and try and enter download mode (vol down/power/home)

Hello, i have had Darky's rom 10.2.2 for few months, then realised, that there is stable cyanogenmod released,so wanted to flash it. So ,i had cwm 3.0.0.5, did a nandroid backup, downloaded cm7 via rom manager. Put it on root of sd card(internal memory).Started cwm, wiped data, cache, dalvik cache, and flashed cm7 it also changed my cwm to 5.3.?(don't remember) but now it's 3.0.0.5 again. Everything was perfect, but then i realized, that i forgot to backup all my phone numbers. So like a moran i wiped all data, and restored my backup(darky's rom 10.2.2). Everything was ok, but it doesn't boot up! Then i went to cwm and i see:
Code:

P.S. Sorry for mistakes,it's not my main laguage.

But before that you must put the phone in download mode by pressing simultaneous down volume key plus home and power and keep pressed until you see a yellow triangle, wait for windows installs all drivers and run odin ver 1.3 then you should see an yellow rectangle saying added!, then flash, but be carefully with this, see in another thread how to flash in odin, or else use kies to update your phone...

yah actually you cannot flash any roms over CM7 or MUI you have to use the ODIN method... use odin method to flash darky 10.2 and after that flash 10.2.2 via cwm..
Sorry for noob Question, why is it we have to use Odin when flashing back from CM7, but we dont need to use Odin for flashing CM7?

AFAIK it's because CM7 uses MTD instead of Samsungs BML. So the CWM script does repartitioning etc..and none of the Samsung custom roms reverse that. So you need to use Odin with repartitioning to reverse it back to Samsung layout..
I hope I remembered all correctly since I'm little tired now when writing this..
PS google those terms if they sound unfamiliar to you.

Yeah this phone is very hard to brick, you can use odin to bring it back, i screwed mine and it was in a loop during booting and had messed up graphics in recovery menu so i couldnt do anything but download mode was still working and it took about 20 minutes with odin and my phone was alive again.

IF your phone is in Download mode (should be clear from the screen) it is probably a driver issue.

Make sure you have a 3 files stock rom and 512pit file and to tick re paretition when you flash.

what i have to do
I flashed i9000XXJVT a few days ago, and flashed Semaphore Kernel. Through the Semaphore app, I switched on every possible setting that I can find in there. After a while, the phone's rotation sensor seems to working haywire, causing my screen to always display in landscape mode, even if I use other launcher. So I read a forum and somebody said just reflash back with stock Rom.
So I do a factory reset through the Privacy option under Setting, but then my phone boot up like nothing was changed. So I tried to get into the recovery mode (CWM v3.0.0.5), did a wipe on data and cache partition. When I tried to boot back the phone, I got this error:

I tried to wipe the data and cache partition, but I think it does not do anything. Tried to go into mount and storage, but no other menu are available except mount Usb storage, and it failed too. Entered advanced menu and do a wipe dalvik cache, failed.
I thought of flashing everything using Odin. So I opened my Odin like usual with all the files loaded. Hooked up my SGS into Download mode, but Odin does not detect my phone. I checked many times with other usb ports, and also tried using other computer, but still not successful.
Now, I'm left with a phone that cannot be used. I have looked into other forums and solutions, but everyone would suggest to use Odin. If I can't even get Odin to detect my phone, how am I supposed to flash?
Help everyone. I have been doing this for 12 hours. Thank you in advance.
You should not wipe data, this has caused the problems, you should
Only wipe cache and dalvik cache.
Remove battery from phone for 3 mins, stop kies running on your PC, start phone in download mode, connect phone to PC, does it now connect?
Sent using TCP/IP
I don't have Kies running in the phone. I had removed the battery for more than an hour. Tried to connect to Odin, but still cannot be detected.
What version of Odin are you running, you need to make sure kies is not running on your pc
Sent using TCP/IP
I tried almost every Odin I have. From odin3 v1, v1.3, v1.7, & v1.82. All not detecting the phone.
#Hated myself for not noticing not to wipe the data. Been doing a lot of flashing and yet a stupid mistake.
Do not connect phone until Odin is running.
Have you tried changing USB ports?
Also, Try re- booting the PC
Sent using TCP/IP
Tried that many times too. Sigh. Maybe it will be a paperweight now.
do you have kies installed on your PC, if do, delete it and download the latest Samsung drivers, reboot PC, try again, there are links to the latest Samsung drivers on xda
Sent using TCP/IP
If this doesn't work, can you try another PC, it will need Samsung drivers (and phone in download mode)
Sent using TCP/IP
I will try it out first. Hopefully other PC will detect the phone.
Does not work as well. Hurm. Does it means that when I wipe the data on the phone, it changes the mounting system? Hence the reason why it never get to be detected by PC. Sigh. What a bad day. I thought of going out to enjoy the day but here I am, stuck to the phone.
If the phone can get into download mode, it should be OK to reflash using odin. Have you removed kies and installed latest Samsung drivers, and are using Odin 1.8.x when phone is in down load mode?
Sent using TCP/IP
What does your phone show when you are in download mode ?
Sent using TCP/IP
The exact same problem happened to me months ago, which was solved by installing Kies.
THX dude, if you install kies, Odin will use the Samsung drivers installed by kies, sometimes, kies doesn't play nice with Odin so you have to remove kies and install latest Samsung drivers on their own. Good point tho, you could install the latest version of kies, reboot PC and retry
Sent using TCP/IP
Possibly try captivate drivers? I think I read somewhere.
Don't some roms work with different drivers.
Worth a try!
Guys, not working as well. I installed Kies, uninstall, reinstall, clean registry, hook usb, still nothing.
Hi,
Maybe you can try to install this driver:
http://www.mediafire.com/?1c3ca4117bm43n6
Or you can install the driver of the SDK:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html
Or change the cable ! (like this person with the same problem)

"I tried every single port, then i went and got my mom's cable and tried it, first try it picked up my phone installed everything and now im running Odin, Successfully! i think... i think i love you"
Wicked, by there way, new Samsung drivers have been released see post in xda

It's my first time flashing a new rom. This is what happened yesterday.
- I created a backUp using clockworkMod recovery 3.0.0.5. (currently using official rom and already rooted)
- I wiped data/factory reset.
- installed cyanogenMod 7 (i didn't like it)(i noticed the recovery mode changed to CM-based recovery)
- went back to clockworkMod and restored my backUp (without wipe)(the recovery mode changed back to ClockWorkMod Recovery)
when the phone started, it couldn't get through the galaxy S bootscreen so I went back to clockworkMod and I found this error.

Now I can't even do anything with it like wiping data/factory reset or reinstall my backUp. I tried searching to check if anyone has the same problem, I did found one. The thread starter said the cause was because he was using quickboot and not the 3 buttons in loading recovery mode. But in my case I'm already using the 3 buttons but still have the same problem. Your help is greatly appreciated.
This is the thread I found with the same problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-932809.html
The problem lies in the fact that your stock rom (which you backed up) was on RFS file system but CM7 uses Ext4 filesystem. So whenever you flash back from ext4 rom to rfs rom, you must first convert the ext4 partitions back to rfs.
What you can do now is to go to download mode, and flash your device with the stock rom along with 512pit file through ODIN. It will convert the partitions back to RFS in the process of flashing.
Flash any gingerbread Samsung firmware with odin which have all 4 files pit, modem, csc and code . Make sure you tick re-partition before flashing and also make sure u flash the right file at right place .

hi kairos005,
i found this post by THE-E, maybe this could help you.
Many possible solutions:
- Reinstall Kies.
- Go to the Driver-Manager of Windows(while phone is plugged in), than search for the device -> right click on the phone and press on uninstall, before pressing on Ok you should mark drivers to be uninstalled too.
- Use another PC
Try first these, if it doesn't help I might come up with something different.

Yes, I can get it to download mode. I've also installed KIES and a separate installer of samsung usb drivers. But still no luck.
I took it to a cellphone shop the other day. The technician said that my internal memory was wiped and i need a new motherboard replacement which, i think, is ridiculous.
HI, I`m using a program USBDeview and it can "see" my device although it doesn`t recognize as a SGS or i9000 or anything related.
I`ve been reading something related to ADB and PDAnet, but everytime that someone says to put my device in Debugging mode ON and continue the steps, I have to stop cause I can`t turn ON my SGS...I suppose that before the last time I used it I let the debugging MODE OFF...so my PC and any other PC will recognize it.
Any other idea/ solution?
Thanks a lot...but I still don`t have a phone,

you can also try using google usb driver (nexus driver) instead of the samsung driver http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html

Good Morning
Very ironic, but i came here to ask about rooting my phone a year back and now i'm back in sort of the same situation..
A year back I rooted my froyo 2.2.1 based Galaxy S to a gingerbread version, then i used quite a few of the ICS roms available on this forum, had been using Cyanogen for the past few months.Yesterday i had some free time,so i thought would check out the JB roms available.
So i did the usual, download the JB version of Fishears since i had a iNand.put it in my internal sdcard..but i could not access the memory card from CWM 5.0.2.7..,so i put it in my external memory card and tried to run the zip from there, but the process got aborted in the middle, tried it twice, dint work.
Then i remembered i had faced this internal memory problem before, had to go and switch on the debugging mode in the developer option.[P.S:- i had been facing the encryption successful problem for half a year, was too lazy/busy to fix it,i just took it in my stride and rebooted a lot to get into the homepage]
So,I'm in CWM and i run the usual process and run the zip file from the internal sdcard,it started out fine, them BOOM.my phone reboots all of a sudden. When it restarts,it does not have a OS to boot into, the green android image with a red exclamation mark and a few text appears which happens too fast to read and it keeps rebooting and this process goes on.
I can still access CWM and the download mode,i tried going into CWM but the internal sd doesnt open and the zip file fails to mount from the external sd.
So i thought **** it,i'll do the rooting part again and i run up ODIN,download the semaphore 2.7.4 kernel, and i see it is just 15 mb or so,i remembered i used more than 1 file and used the pit folder also, but i read it on the semaphore website, its only 1 file and have to use it as the PDA.went to download mode and odin recognised it and the process completed without a hitch,it even showed a green PASS..
but the problem came when it had to reboot after the process,it got stuck in the "Galaxy S GT I9000" page and never moved forward.it was there for 30 minutes or so before i pulled out the battery.
Basically
1.I cant get past that page
2.I can access the CWM and Download modes
3.I accepted my mistake and thought of not doing any more mistakes,so icame here
4.When i boot into CWM mode, these errors come
E:failed to open/etc/recovery.fstab (No such file or directory)
E:unknown volume for path[/cache/recovery/command]
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/command

Cant access the external sd from the CWM now
I dont mind any os now,as long as i can take calls.Am leaving college for home by train day after,so i need a working os as soon as possible
Thank you for reading this and thank you in advance for taking your time to help me out

you may try this, if you can boot to download mode but make sure your is GT-I9000

also download the pit file, http://www.mediafire.com/?v2rub40k1bvccj4
Step 2: Extract the ROM [password: samfirmware.com]
Step 3: Launch ODIN. (Don’t open Samsung Kies)
Step 4: Turn off your Galaxy S.
Step5: Put your Galaxy S into Download Mode by Press and hold Volume Down + Home + Power buttons to boot into Download Mode.
Step 5: Connect your Galaxy S with your PC using a USB cable. (Before proceed to Next Step, please make sure that ODIN detect your device)
Step 6:

Click on Odin PHONE Tab
Select MODEM_I9000XXJVU_REV_00_CL1092175.tar.md5.
Click on Odin CSC Tab
Select GT-I9000-CSC-MULTI-OXAJVU.tar.md5.
Step 9: Click on START in ODIN to start flash the leaked firmware on your device.
hope this will help.
I had this problem with Paranoid Android before... the zip was corrupt.
If you are able to extract the rom with winrar/winzip/totalcmd or other program, install it, if it is corrupt, download it again again and again...

flash CF-root for xxjuv with a pit512 (repartition ticked) cf-root can download from here http://download.chainfire.eu/132/CF-Root/SGS/CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVU_2.3.6-v4.3-CWM3RFS.zip
Once rooted with CWM, enter CWM using combo keys and enter "mounts and storage" and format everything except Boot and also do the full wipes one more time
Finally Flash the JVU+Root again one more time with PIT (repartition) to resolve this issue ...you may need flashing twice or more to solve this
issued.

New developments now
I followed the steps given in the EZ recovery mode,it crashed into the same e3 recovery mode, for the heck of it i flashed the CFROOT which was provided and it worked fine..all disks were mounted fine and no errors in cwm,
went into Mounts and storage and formatted everything apart from boot and followed the rest of samtans advice
It crashed into the same e3 Rec mode again with the same meta data error message
any suggestions guys, atleast now i'm hopeful after seeing that CWM screen without any errors

Ok dont know whether this is good or bad
I installed CM9 from the external sd as the internal sd was inaccesible in any way..the installation showed info like
"the internal sd card marker could not be found
Going ahead with installation"
the installation continues and restarts once and updates but it does not boot into the main page,it directly goes into the Encryption Unsuccessful page. When i try Reset Phone,it goes into the CWM recovery screen with some errors,
when i try to install CM10 from this recvery screen,it initially stops the installation saying the data partition layout is different and all my data will be wiped.run the .zip to go ahead with the progress.I run this it goes directly into the CWM 6.0._._ and it doesnt show any errors,i try to reboot it gets stuck on the galaxy s screen.
this situation is better than the previous condition as i know a OS can still run on my Phone..Just need to get this thing rectified now
Please if anyone could help me right now,i would be really grateful..not able to contact anyone without my phone
It might be a hardware problem... I had something similar
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895224
But for now go to Ez recovery and then try Darky's Resuruction ROM.

I installed Cyanogen 9 and got through tht EU page by restarting abut 20 times or so,now i'm trying to install a working version of gapps in it.Tried 1 but the setup failed,so i flashed back to Cyanogen 9 and am not touching it till i reach home.a device capable of making and taking calls is better than nothing..
Is there a way to download contacts from gmail without gapps, the play store is not included in the original rom and i'm hesitant to go into CWM recovery mode as i will have to tackle the EU page again
Anyways thanks for your help, will have to fix this problem once and for all after i reach home
I don't know about contacts from gmail. When you're home look at my updated post above
