How are y'all who are running honeycomb getting google voice to work? I've seen people post that they're running it, but I get the error posted here:
http://nookdevs.com/Honeycomb_App_List#Google_Voice_v0.4.2.13
I'd REALLY like to run GV. Any help much appreciated!
Thanks!
anyone? ability to send sms is really the only missing feature on this thing now. would really love to get it working. thanks!
Google Voice is the only missing feature??? I need Google Voice, Google Docs, printing, and FLASH. My gawd, how could they ship the XOOM with no FLASH? Oh yeah, they were trying to beat the iPad 2 to market.
gv
Per google voice forum, and a google employee,n the app is in the works. No eta
It seems like if you can "restore" your data from another android device to google voice installed on Honeycomb, it can work. You just need to get past that set up screen. See, for example:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11919203&postcount=653
I'm going to work more on this at home.
EDITED FOR SUCCESS/WINNING:
--------> Okay, got GV working:
Uninstalled GV from my Nook. Made sure /data/data/com.google.android.apps.googlevoice/ was gone.
Reinstalled GV. DON'T START THE PROGRAM YET! The next step takes place also in /data/data/com.google.android.apps.googlevoice/
Moved copies of my 2 /shared_prefs/ files (com.google.android.apps.googlevoice_preferences.xml and VeryPersistent.xml) from my Nexus One to my Nook Color.
Started the app, and it works perfectly!

Has anyone else with a nook tried this from the XDA forum?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=984111
I am having the same issues that everyone else is having on the xoom. After restore the data, it force closes as soon as I launch Google Voice. If i don't restore it will not get past the first screen. I am using a Samsung Galaxy S phone to backup. Will keep trying different ways.

I tried installing GV the other day but I got to the end of the setup wizard where it asks for a phone number and couldn't think of what to put there. I believe even on the XOOM there is a "fake" phone number to apply to the settings that gets associated with the data plan.
Thoughts?

Wow, I hadn't heard of anyone making it past the first screen of the wizard on Honeycomb. Do your .xml files show some of your settings have been saved?

Where would I be looking for this? Went poking around in Astro, but not sure where to look. Also, I just tried to pick a random phone number associated with my GV account (work phone) and it proceeded but still wanted to check my voicemail settings. Gets an error (popup) that offers to skip the check - but when I skip it the main area of the screen goes blank and the prev/next buttons go greyed out.

they are two files in /data/data/com.google.android.apps.googlevoice/shared_prefs/
VeryPersistent.xml should read (substituting your actual gmail account, of course):
<?xml version='1.0' encoding='utf-8' standalone='yes' ?>
<map>
<boolean name="ever_signed_in" value="true" />
<string name="device_primary_account">[email protected]</string>

I suspect you're using ASTRO or a similar file manager; these cannot see the /data folder.
Go to the Market, purchase, & download "Root Explorer (File Manager)". Root Explorer can see /data and you'll be able to copy the required files.
Working assumptions: NC has a microSD card and does not have either Google Voice nor Root Explorer yet installed.
If you've already installed AND booted Google Voice on your NC and it didn't work, uninstall, re-install, and don't open it until step 12 below.
Process:
1) Install Root Explorer on a device with a working Google Voice install (Droid in my case)
2) Open Root Explorer and navigate to the referenced folder: /data/data/com.google.android.apps.googlevoice/shared_prefs/
3) Copy one of the two files using Root Explorer then navigate out to your sdcard and paste it to any folder (I created new folder on the sdcard "Google Voice Prefs" - could have just as easily pasted into my Dropbox folder, which would eliminate steps 5, 6, and the first part of 9 below)
4) Repeat step 2 for the other file
5) Plug your device (me: Droid) into your machine (me: Win 7) & access your SD card
6) Copy the two files from shared_prefs to your desktop
7) Download and install Google Voice on your NC from the Market
8) Download and install Root Explorer on your NC if you haven't already
9) Plug in your nook, access your SD card, and copy the two shared_prefs files from your Desktop to anywhere on the sdcard (again, I created a new folder called "Google Voice Prefs")
10) Using Root Explorer, copy file 1 of 2 and paste it into the
/data/data/com.google.android.apps.googlevoice/shared_prefs/ folder on your NC
Note: I had to create a new folder "shared_prefs" - no sweat in Root Explorer
11) Repeat step 10 for file 2 of 2
12) Exit Root Explorer, boot Google Voice, and enjoy!

Unfortunately I've had no luck with this so far. I tried a couple of times. I even went in and moved my ENTIRE directory over. It still force-closes when clicking "Next" on the first screen.
My devices:
* Nook running HC v4 eMMC 2nd edition with the Gapps fix and updated build.prop ... Voice not working
* Captivate running stock 2.2 ... voice working
The Root Explorer instructions don't seem significantly different, I don't own it, and I'm adept at navigating Linux via adb so I don't see much need to try that. I also verified my permissions and ownerships matched the default.
Giving up for tonight, but hopefully can massage this into working as GVoice is pretty important to me. Otherwise I've been amazed at the quality of HC v4 given the lack of AOSP for Honeycomb so far.
I am having a problem with the Nook app on CM7 (using the 4th nightly and the OC kernel.)
Doing some quick searching and extensive looking hasn't yielded any results directly related to the following issue.
When looking in my library, if I try to download a book it just says "No such file or directory" and my other books that are on my SD card don't show up/can't open them with the app (No Application Found).
So, just wondering if anyone else has got this working, I would really like to use this as an e-reader.
Thanks

Tried that solution and it doesnt work when trying to download books. I always get file type not supported. You?
yes, it does work when downloading books. make sure you follow it exactly.
you have to set the EXTERNAL_STORAGE value to /sdcard like it says and NOT /mnt/sdcard

I did change that but I didnt notice that I had to type out adb shell before typing su for the apk. I get permission denied, does that mean I missed something while rooting my nook?
Edit:
NM adb shell works, just didnt work from terminal emulator. Anyways tried everything from adb and a computer and still no dice. I have no clue why this is not working. The books in my files dont have the cover and when I click on it it looks like it will load then just goes back to my files again.
NM, it seems that the books that were already in my library from when I had the regular nook OS was giving me issues. I went to shop for a new free book to see what happened and it downloaded and worked. So I did it right from the beginning but kept trying the same 2 stupid books. lol Thanks
I'm not sure what's going on here.
I tried following through with the directions posted in the link. But my adb shell seems to be repeating whatever I type after I press enter. It doesn't seem to be working.
Is there something I'm doing wrong?
I'm using phiremod.
Okay, so I found something... I think.
I did export EXTERNAL_STORAGE /sdcard
and I got
export: /sdcard: bad variable name
Any suggestions?
WORKING Nook ereader app on Nook Color running CM7 from sd card
I wanted to be able to have access to 2 barnes and noble libraries on the same device. I looked around and this is what I came up with. You don't need to do any really tricky or invasive mods and it works great. I'm mostly a moron so I wrote this for people who are like me, please don't be offended if you have to say "well duh" alot.
I would read the notes at the bottom of the post after you read this.
1. I prepared a CM7 sd card with google apps!!! using this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
***(I used the stable CM-7.1.0-RC-1-encore-signed version + current gapps, but it should work with any current CM7 nightly)
2. I powered down my nook completely, inserted the CM7 sd card, powered it back up, and let the CM7 installer routine run. The installer shuts the nook off when complete, then I rebooted into CM7. After registering to my google acct and getting to the home screen, I clicked on the icon in the bottom left corner (3 little horizontal lines) and selected Settings>Applications>Unknown sources...check that box.
3. Opened the Market app. Searched for "appinstaller" and installed AppInstaller by FunTrigger. Then I completely powered down my nook and removed the CM7 sd card.
4. Then I downloaded an older version of the Nook ereader app (ver 2.5) and put it somewhere in my filesystem that was easy to locate (you will be locating it from linux) from here:
http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/app/nook
5. Then on a PC running Linux (ubuntu 11), I plugged the sd card I put CM7 on into my computer. In linux you can see all the partitions...in windows all you can see is boot. I opened the "CM7 SD CARD" partition, and I put the nook.apk file I downloaded from freewarelovers right in there.
6. I reinserted the CM7 sd card into my nook and booted it back up. I went to applications, ran AppInstaller and clicked on the "nook.apk" icon and installed it. Registered my B&N account normally and populated my library.
Notes:
* DO NOT add the nook.apk into the native OS. This is only for CM7. If you try to add this app to an OS with the native nook reader working (unrooted/nootered) the device gets stuck in a boot loop which you will have to use CWM or 8 fail boots to recover from.
* I bear no responsibility for any damage you may do to your device by using this method. That said, it is almost impossible to brick a nook color, especially using a sideload OS. If you think you did just look around the forums, there is lots of information on how to unbrick a nook color.
* If you do not have Linux running on anything to read the CM7 partitions, you can google "reading ext4 filesystems in Windows" and figure out how to do that. Mac is Unix based, so maybe you could use a mac and just hope no one finds out. I highly suggest you just make a live CD by following the directions here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD
* Incidentally, you can use this method for sideloading any apps into your sd-based CM7 environment.
Why would you need to sideload the Nook app? Is it hiding in the market these days??
No it's there but you can't download it. Either says invalid device or it won't give you the option to install at all.
EDIT: I updated to a current nightly and it allowed me to download the ver 2.6 Nook reader, but the sign in screen is garbled and it won't communicate with the B&N servers. Had a similar issue with Netflix, which I also sideloaded an older version of and works well.
@ mastigia.
Firstly, very appreciate your effort and post instructions for others.
Secondly, why would you want to go with that route?
At least, there are 2 options installing Nook App with ease.
a. Download and install directly from Market. (see note 1)
b. If for sideloading, just use usb cable to tranfer the .apk over, no need to remove the uSD then insert into Linux just to copy the file.
Note 1: If you can't see Nook App on the Market, then fix your Market first.
Note 2: another option (would be 3rd) is using ADB (either over USB or wireless to push file over)
why oh why

Ok...
a. I CAN see the app on the market. The app currently available is ver 2.7 which from the previous build of CM7 I was using had "Incompatible Device" where the "Install" button would normally be. So, I updated to CM7 nightly 209 thinking I was an idiot. And hey, whaddya know, that made it possible for me to install the 2.7 reader from the market. But it was garbled and would not communicate with the B&N servers and caused me some really crappy synching issues later which I won't go into here.
b. This is just for getting the nook.apk onto CM7 loaded on an sd card. The prob with just moving the file over usb is that windows (which I started off using) will only pick up my native emmc because the sd card partition I want to move the .apk to is in an ext4 partition. Using adb wireless I was unable to find the mount point, once again probably for the same reason.
So, to clean that up I would say just plug your nook into linux and move the file over usb and that would probably work and thanks for the suggestion, I just did not think of that.
Ya know this is kind of a silly and unique issue. I got my gf a nook color, she wants her own library and an unrooted nook (warranty). She also wants access to MY library (which has alot of books she would like to read) and apps like netflix (which also requires a legacy version). Books are the primary reason we got nooks. So for someone like ME, thats the post I would need.
Anybody having force close issues with the latest Nook app? I'm running 213 and I can download but anytime I try to open anything I get a force close.
Is there anyway to download and install games/apps from the computer? Can I go into CWM - Mount USB - and then create a folder in my Gtablet and put all my apk files in that folder and then somehow install them once booted into my tablet?
I have never used android before so please forgive my ignorance... I just just flashed Clock Work Mod via NVFlash so I am still learning. I would like to install PSX4Droid and Final Fantasy 7 among other games.

if they are android files (which, by apk, I assume they are), then yes. Just put them in a folder, use a file explorer to browse to them and open them, and they should install. Of course, installing is no guarantee that they will work on the gTab.
Also note that if you load an app that does not appear in your market, you will not be able to get updates to the app via the market.
You should have a folder called download in the root, use that for consistency.
However, I have found the easiest way is to email them to yourself at the gmail address you use on the tab.
The regular gmail reader provides for installing the APK from inside the message (just click Install!).
Works every time.
(Plus this gives you a backup copy of the app to install from anywhere you have web.)
The easiest way is to place them on a usb flash drive & use a file explorer (i.e root explorer) to install them.
I also want to mention that the new web-based Market will install the programs onto the tab for you when you click to install them from the PC.
No muss, no fuss. I was pretty surprised when I discovered it accidentally.
This is posted here because theres no "General" section for the KFDH8
There's really go guides/how to's/info all in one place for the KFHD8 so I figured I'd put one together. I didn't come up with any of this stuff, but I searched high and low for some of these answers and some aren't "simple" to find.

[How To] Root Kindle Fire HD 8.9"
The author of the OP asked the file not be mirrored anywhere else, so please don't take the file and create another post with the file mirrored. If the link doesn't work, the op is located here. You need to post there or here and ask someone for a link via PM. ALSO This does NOT Install Busy Box, you'll need to download and install that once you get the market installed.
1 - Download the .zip file here
2 - Extract the file to the folder of your choice
3 - Double click the "RunMe.bat" file and follow the directions
(note, there is a step that will ask you to type something on your screen, watch for it, otherwise you'll have to start over)
Alternatively, you can download and use the tool located here. It'll automatically root it for you when you do the Restore+Root option(but it's a 1.1gb file so prepare for a lengthy download time)

Link to CM10.1(Android 4.2.2): Files plus are all listed here. Just download the files, copy to your kindle, boot into recovery(with the device powered off, hold Vol + and power. [How To] Install gApps onto the Kindle Fire HD 8.9"
In order to do this you need a file explorer app that will allow you to write to the system folder and change file permissions(I.E. - ES File Explorer)
1 - Download the file located here
2 - Extract the file and copy the Apps folder to your kindle(located under the "System" folder once the file is extracted)
3 - Navigate to the Apps folder you just copied to your Kindle and install GoogleServicesFramework.apk and GoogleLoginService.apk
4 - Copy Phonesky.apk and Talk.apk to /system/app on your Kindle
5 - Change the permissions of Phonesky.apk and Talk.apk so they're set to the following:
User: Read Write
Group: Read
Others: Read
6 - Install Phonesky.apk and Talk.apk and reboot the device
Google Play Market should now show up under your apps. Just to be safe, I also reinstall GoogleServicesFramework.apk and GoogleLoginService.apk again just to be sure...probably not needed...but it's what I do

You can do this 1 of 2 ways, the way I'm listing is "fool proof" so to speak, but require you to purchase Titanium Backup Pro. The other way doesn't cost anything, but also doesnt work for EVERY launcher(such as ADW.Launcher EX). The other way with directions is here(though it says it's for the Kindle Fire 7, it will work on the 8.9" too)
1 - Download your launcher of choice(I prefer Go Launcher HD for Pad and install from Google Play
2 - Open Titanium Backup Pro
3 - Go to the "Backup/Restore" tab, long press on the launcher you just installed and click "Convert to system app"
4 - Press the "home" buttom and it will prompt which launcher you want to use

[How To] Remove Bloatware from your Kindle Fire HD 8.9"
Again, there are two ways to do this(one being use ADB and manually delete the apps from the /system/app folder) but again, this way is probably a bit safer
1 - Open Titanium Pro
2 - Go to the "Backup/Restore" tab
A - If the app you want to remove is RED then you have to long press on the app, select "Convert to user app", long press it again, and select "Backup-->Verify-->Uninstall"(this will back it up in case you need to reinstall it)
B - If the app you want to remove is white, then you can just long press and select "Backup-->Verify-->Uninstall
C - If the app you want to remove is RED AND doesn't give the option to convert it to a system app, if you can just tap the app name(not long press) and select "Freeze App" that will disable the app so it's not used anymore.

Q. Why can't I get certain apps to install on my Kindle Fire DH 8.9" through Google Play?
A. That's because the KFHD8 isn't supposed to have Google Play on it, so certain apps will say they aren't compatible with your device. The way around that is to either A - change your build.prop so that it shows a different device(which I wouldn't do if I was you) or B - Use Market Helper. It will fool the Play Market into thinking you have a different device which will allow you to install the "restricted" apps. You'll need Root, GoogleServicesFramework and GoogleLoginServices installed for this to work.
Q. When I try to use "X" app, it says Google is requesting permissions to log-in, but when I click on the notification, it just disappears.
A. You need to install GoogleLoginServices
Q. Why can't I add widgets to my homescreen when using my customer launcher?
A. The Kindle Fire does not by default support homescreen widgets, this you need to install the App Widget Picker THEN set a widget.
Q. When I try to open Gmail it just says the app has stopped...why?
A. You need to install Account and Sync Settings.
Q. OH NOOO!!!! I FUBAR'ed MY KFHD8!!! HOW DO I RESET IT BACK TO FACTORY?!?!?!?!
Download and use the tool located here
Q. Is the SIM card in my KFHD8 removable? If so, is the tablet unlocked?
A. The sim card is removable. It's located on the top left side of the device. And yes, it is unlocked. BUT there are no T-Mobile 3g/4g bands as seen in the FCC doc [url="https://apps.fcc.gov/eas/GetApplicationAttachment.html?id=1794817']here[/url].
That's all for now folks! I'll add more as it comes along. If you see a mistake or think something might be a good idea to add...just lemme know...i'll get it added!
I totally agree with most of these steps, especially rooting and TWRP. However, in my opinion a simpler way to get things like a new launcher and the android market on the kindle with an application called KindleFree - http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...cher-and-google-play-store-on-kindle-fire-hd/
Its a straight forward APK that does most of the work for you in regards to installing services and getting things configured. There is a free version linked and after using the free version to get the process started a paid version will let you complete the rest of the setup (It costs $1).
It was a life saver for me because of its simplicity.
If you have installed TWRP recovery, can't you just flash the last ICS gapps from recovery?
Rooting 8.3.1
Hi!
I forgot to opt-out of automatic updates and today my KFHD8 has updated itself to v8.3.1.
I tried to root it againg using Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v27 (from the link on the thread You provided) but after saying it was a success and rebooting I tried running "SuperSU" and I get this message:
"There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it."

And I tried:
PHP:
adb shell su
to confirm but it also states that:
/system/bin/sh: su: not found

What can I do about it? Please, help!
I'm about to order a Kindle Fire HD 8.9 and wanted to get confirmation that rooting and custom rom installation is working on the 8.3.1 version of the firmware. Thanks!
Yes 8.3.1 can be rooted and you can install a custom rom. There is a thread in Q&A called rooting 8.3.1 from scratch that has detailed instructions if you need help.

The rooting did not work for some reason - try it again.

This is posted here because theres no "General" section for the KFDH8
There's really go guides/how to's/info all in one place for the KFHD8 so I figured I'd put one together. I didn't come up with any of this stuff, but I searched high and low for some of these answers and some aren't "simple" to find.
I AM IN NO WAY RESPONSIBLE IF ANY OF THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS CAUSE DAMAGE TO YOUR DEVICE, VOIDS YOUR WARRANTY, CAUSES BIG FOOT TO DO UNMENTIONABLE THINGS TO YOU WHILE YOU'RE SLEEP, OR IN ANY OTHER WAY RUINS YOUR LIFE. THESE ARE ALL PERFORMED AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
[How To] Install TWRP on the Kindle Fire HD 8.9"
[How To] Install gApps onto the Kindle Fire HD 8.9"
In order to do this you need a file explorer app that will allow you to write to the system folder and change file permissions(I.E. - ES File Explorer)
[How To] Set a different default launcher on your Kindle Fire HD 8.9"
You can do this 1 of 2 ways, the way I'm listing is "fool proof" so to speak, but require you to purchase Titanium Backup Pro. The other way doesn't cost anything, but also doesnt work for EVERY launcher(such as ADW.Launcher EX). The other way with directions is here(though it says it's for the Kindle Fire 7, it will work on the 8.9" too)
[How To] Remove Bloatware from your Kindle Fire HD 8.9"
Again, there are two ways to do this(one being use ADB and manually delete the apps from the /system/app folder) but again, this way is probably a bit safer

Is it possible on the stock software that you can sideload apps like adobe flash? Looked high and low and couldn't find a setting in the settings menu.

There is not a setting that you can modify. But if you go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature, I have a flashable CWM zip that sets it for you. Look at item 3, Extras.

Yes, you can still use ADB to connect and sideload apps, but it is very difficult to set up. My CWM method is much easier.

I can vouch that I added the side load option through leaplinlar method and it worked out great. I wanted to test out stock before full commit to cm10 but wanted amazon app store to download some apps to test.

Hello guys from xda-developers.com, I desperately need your help. I just got a new Nook HD+ and I live in a country where is very difficult to access to the internet by anyway. So, I can’t register the HD+ to Barnes&Noble site, nor purchase apps or get the HD+ working on.
I just want to use the Nook as a no-wifi stand-alone device for reading, watching movies, gaming, and using apps like calendar, calculator, alarm clock and so on by finding a safe way for sideloading apps and files locally from my computer to it. How I should do this and get the Nook HD+ completely useful? Now the Nook is in test mode, skipping first registration screen with OOBE procedure after a factory reset. I need detailed step-by-step instructions.
I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

Go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature and make a bootable CWM SD. Use that to flash my Universal Root rev3 and my enable Unknown Sources and you can sideload any app you want. The hardest part for you will be getting a file manager working so that you can sideload. With no internet I'm not sure what you can do. If you don't have internet, how are you reading this?

Thanks. I did it and it worked up perfectly at first try. Later put reading files and apps on the external SD card and using OfficeSuite could read word and pdf files with no problems. But I could not find a way to run my own apps. How can I do that?. Sorry if that is a silly question but I am new to tablets world and I feel like a deer in the headlights (your saying) or like a cow at the movies (our saying). Greetings from Cuba.

Not sure what you mean, run your own apps. You mean after you installed them, finding them to run? There are two ways.
Sideloaded apps do not show in the stock app drawer. But you can open another screen that does show them. Go to apps and hold your finger on the apps title bar and push the volume up button. An new screen called extras shows. Your apps will be there.
Another way is to sideload an alternate launcher like zeam. Then when you hit the n key it gives you the option of using it by default instead of the stock launcher. Do it. Your sideloaded apps show there.

I meant: I want to run the .apk files I have on the external SD card which were copied on it by attaching the SD card reader to my PC. Explain me how to get those apps running or link to some tutorial. Thanks.

That is what I meant when I said you would have a challenge doing it without internet.
The problem is those apk files must be installed before they can be run. The normal way to install them after you flashed my zip is to open the apk with a file manager. When you do, a dialog box opens asking if you want to install. Easy enough.
But stock has no file manager to open the apks with. So you have to get one somehow. If you have no internet and no ability to run a store, there is no way to get one. You might try the 'files' function in stock to do it.
Edit: Actually I figured it out for you.
1. Find an apk for a file manager, like root browser, es file manager or other.
2. Copy that apk to your internal sd using your USB cable attached to your PC.
3. Open chrome with your app drawer.
4. In the chrome address bar type the following:
file:///sdcard/nameofapk.apk
5. Hit enter
6. It will ask if you want to keep it, say yes.
7. When it is finished downloading, click on the little down arrow in the top middle of the screen. It will ask if you want to complete the action using two choices. Select package installer.
It will install the apk, hopefully your file manager. Now do the first (extras) method I showed you in my other post to find the app. Then use the file manager to open more apks and install them.

I see I misused “run” for “sideloading.
Before trying that for sideloading a file manager tell me if there is another way to show the “extras” screen as it is difficult to get it show by pushing down volume up button and taping on App’s bar name. It not always work.
And why, if I see the Zem Launcher icon on Settings, Applications, My Apps, as installed, it doesn’t ask for choices when I push down “N” nook button.
Hope to make myself understood.

Yes, that extras screen is hard to activate.
But I have a fix for you. Go to settings and uninstall zeam. Then flash this file:
http://d-h.st/S0c
It is my old "extras" file (not related to the extras screen I was talking about earlier). It will re-install zeam and add root browser, which will let you install apks directly. And now when you do the n, it should give you the default choice.

I flashed the file and reinstalled zeam launcher plus root browser and could sideload the ES File Manager from external SD card but still have to active the "extras" screen to reach to it. Nook buttom doesn’t give options. When pushed down, it takes me immediately to nook side. Movies are not played back either. Is there a way to change completely the Nook system to convert it into a more friendly android tablet?

The CM10.1.3. And yes, you can use that same SD to flash it. If you want to use Play Store, you also need to flash the gapps zip. Gapps-jb-20130812-signed.zip from goo.im.
