(Q) Hdmi out - Xoom Themes and Apps

I've seen hdmifull and hdmwin out there, but my questions are one, is playback upscaled, and two, which app really works best. Any input would be great. Thanks!

I haven't connected via hdmi but from what I understand no app is needed, it's a full mirror. I would imagine it also upscales accordingly.

Thst is correct you get the full image on your tv and xoom at the same time with no app needed just plug in to your hdtv and your set

Yeah, piece of cake. I've had no issues including playing Super Mario Bros 3 on my 65" DLP
There is a slight overscan but doesn't really affect it. And it is still displayed on the Xoom at the same time.

Nice! Thanks guys!

Does the Xoom output 720p or 1080p?

720p. I don't know if apps have the ability to increase that though

This would mean that there is no real benefit to having 1080p videos playing from it because even if you have a 1080p T.V. the Xoom is only outputting 720p. I was going to share some of my converted movies at a friends house from my Xoom and this means I can just do a batch conversion to 720p instead and save space which is great.

Does the xoom screen have to stay on while outputting hdmi? I'd like to save some battery and also not have it shining away while watching a movie in a dark room etc. What happens if you hit lock while it's outputting?

yes I am hoping for an update or an app in the near future that will allow this. Sometimes I don't want it playing on both (especially if its a movie).
Also another benefit would be great if we could have 2 different screens going on (it is dual core afterall) in games. This would allow us to have controls on the xoom's screen, and have the actual screen play image on the tv. Just a thought....

is root needed to do this, or will it just work on a stock XOOM wifi?
thanks

It works on stock. That's what the hdmi port on the bottom is for.
Has anyone had an issue with the connection at the xoom being loose or do I just have a junk cable? If I move it the wrong way playing a game, I lose the picture. Pretty crummy. :'(

I haven't had that issue. I have the OEM cable from Moto though (bought it when it came out for the Droid X).

I need to get me one of those! That would be awesome to carry around...

I picked up a great cable that's HDMI certified from Amazon for $9 and free shipping. Works great 8)

I have the same issue, I doubt we both have a bad cable. Seems odd to me that it would do this. Will be interesting to see if this is common or if we are just an isolated few.

Same here mine does the same thing. I have both a cheap Ebay cable, and the one that came with my DX. They both do the same thing. IMO all the connections on mine are loose but the only one that will stop working is HDMI. I'm wondering if more people have the issue, or if I should return mine

HDMI and HBO Go

Anyone here use the HBO Go App?
It appears to turn off HBO Go when the plug is used...
Anyway to allow the system to detect the HDMI (and mirror) but have the app ignore it?
I will give it a try tonight and edit this post.
HTC Flyer / Tapatalk
This has to be one of the most frustrating aspects about this phone. Never mind the lack of color quality or the barred wireless tethering, but the fact that this phone has the hdmi output but is not compatible with any of the apps I want to use it for is sad. So far i have found I can not use it for: NFL mobile, Hulu, and now you say HBO GO. "Oh but you forget netflix works!" you might repond, well Netflix is already on every device known to man so there is no benefit to having this if you plan on streaming online content.

The Bionic asks me to unplug the HDMI cable and plug it back it. Doing that does not change things.
I had video on my tv for one second. Then the error message popped up again.
Bummer

My guess would be the ap dev. Is blocking hdmi due to copyright infringement. It's really stupid, but wouldn't surprise me.

[Q] while charging?

Curious if anyone has had an issue with their bionic while charging. The issue I'm having is the screen becomes less responsive while charging. moments where it's ok other moments where its almost stuck or real slow. As soon as I unplug it, it's just fine. Thanks
I have noticed that too, it is almost comical some of the stuff it thinks I hit. Try using swype while charging, if it glitches it is really fun!
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
yep same here with swype. Do you have a dock? If do is your video play back ok?
I don't sorry, I just use the bionic dock app.

I do but I have not tried it while charging.

Ok. So play back is fine for you then? That is my second issue is playback. Itdoesn't play back smooth. It's like it almost skips or a split second pause. Trying to see if I need to get a new phone. Thanks for the info.

I have screen issues when plugged in through AC (very erratic), much less but still there in the HD dock, and never in the car dock or webtop dock.
Never had issues with video playback in any charging mode, however.
I used to have that same problem with by thunderbolt. I was using a blackberry charger and not the oem one

Thanks for the feed back
I might have to do another thread to ask about video playback in hd dock and just with hdmi cable.I have four bugs (issues) otherwise phone is great.

Not really getting to the bottom of this over at af. I am getting mixed results.
Can anyone confirm the results? I am going to make a video of what is going on.
So looking at what's going on here it seems to only lose data when streaming Netflix I am doing some more testing to see if YouTube does the same thing.
Will post a video tomorrow.
Seems like YouTube is having the same effect.
Playing rhapsody while the HDMI is connected is having the same effect too.-

MHL Videos with Subtitles[SOLVED]

Well. S4 is quite powerfull for our device and well. Its kinda useless unless you do something that requires that firepower. Well Sony has put a great H/W mhl chip and it can interpolate the screen to FullHD if you have proper cable and tv. Watching Hd movies is a pleasure but only sometimes. I know English and i dont need subtitles. But when i wana watch a film with my family. And its full HD. I cant. S/W decoding lacs and it shows subtitles. H/W is perfect and smooth but Sony didnt make subtitles to be shown over H/W decoding on the big screen. Have anyone found a way to show subtitles ?
So the solution is to download VLC for Android and enable Hardware acceleration in options. It plays 1080p uncomressed videos perfectly and supports subtitles over the MHL cable

And I believe it's got nothing to do with Sony, it's a limitation of the technology, because Dice player offers an expliciely stated experimental feature for subtite output via hdmi. I'd have to check if its for Samsung devices only though, I believe I remember the option saying that.
Side question: most fullhd tvs feature a usb port nowadays anyway, why not use that and play your stuff directly on the tv if the technology doesnt seem to be really there...?
Re: MHL Videos
I agree. Or you could download screen standby in play store. Try if it could reduce lag when using SW rendering

Dude thats imposible( i havent found a way)
Nope, it's not the same: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Relationship_with_MHL
Different connector, different wireing, different (altered) protocol. Nope, not the same.
Well it's not possible on your phone but you have a PC. There's plenty of tools to be found in the allmighty internet allowing you to easily overlay the subtitles onto your existing video. They will be a part of the "images" then though. Depending on the firepower at your disposal, such an encode takes somwhere between 10-30 minutes per movie for a typical hollywood blockbuster.

Yep. Well i asked a person who edits videos and he said that it cant be hardcoded. Butt. thanks for the info. Although I really want sony to implement subtitles over MHL. And i mean there is no difference if i say HDMI or MHL. MHL is a convertor and it decodes colors different way. But it has aboslutly the same posibilities.

Yes and it is amazing. I bought actiontec screen beam from Amazon for $59 and mirror my X and Asus Taichi and it is sweet. Actually works better with phone. Mirrors beautifully at 1080p. Barely any lag. Downloaded an mkv yesterday and couldn't get me taichi to work perfectly with the mirroring so I put the mkv on phone, downloaded archos video player, and the mkv played flawlessly to my TV.

Yes. I bought a Panasonic Bluray player with Miracast shortly after I got my Nexus 4. Was really disappointed with the lag. Moto X didn't work any better. Maybe the Panasonic player sucks? Maybe Miracast just isn't ready for prime time?

How does it behaves with games. Can you try a PSX emulator with a PS3 controller? sounds like a nice portable console

Miracast with 5ghz. Possible no lag?
I tried miracast , and it is really awsome to view movies and to watch netflix on TV. There is a possibility to see the moto x screen on TV, thru wi fi direct.
But to play games the lag is too much, and its impossible to play fast games like need for speed.
Today i'm travelling and can't make this test at my smart tv, but could it be possible and reduce the lag if i use the wifi 5ghz speed?
Can anybody try is it reduce the lag?
