[Q] Video Formats

is there a way to change the playable formats on the nook color? i mean i got the nook color over the Archos and being able to play only mp4 files is painful because most of my movies are in avi mkv or other. is there a way to make the nook play the same formats... i dont mean via rockplayer because on mine even a 480p video avi file runs crapily.

Try Vplayer. Not sure if it will work, but worth a try.

Consensus seems to be that using the built in player is your best bet, as that seems to be the only one that can take advantage of hardware decoding. You can convert your video to H.264 Baseline. Some comments and instructions are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894165

im aware that the default player can only take advantage of hardware decoding but i was wondering if i could possible add suppport for other file formats into the default player? is that possible or no? overall the nook is much better then the archos 70 in my opinion but its video support is abysmall

Hi guys!
Im in deep love with the nook! And im not too far from buying one.
But im a bit confused! What is the nook able to do with the available custom rom?
I mean, will i be able to play Avi movies with no problems if i install a custom rom? i will write down my needs and you can answer whether theyr possible or not lol, probably easier.
- Readin documents Pdf mainly
- Music (TuneIn aswell)
- Light games such as angry birds, tank hero
- MOVIES Avi, mkv and so on.
Idc if i have to root or install a custom rom. I just need to know if the needs is possible in any way..

The froyo rom can play avi format along with many other formats. The stock rom can only play mp4 format. If you don't want to root the device, you can convert the video file by using handbrake, a free video conversion software. Nook is a good device for browsing the web and watch okay quality videos.

Froyo is not ready for prime time - however NC rooted with 2.1 is more than enough to meet your listed needs -it can play various video formats - just need to get the right player - i use mVideoPlayer and it plays mp4 plus the added plus of importing subtitle files. RockPlayer plays a whole slew of formats including avi and mkvs. I use handbrake to transcode my avi files to mp4 coz who wants to be lugging that huge file size around?

I would recommend rooting and using the stock ROM. I would only use Froyo if you need to watch flash video. (You'll definitely need to root to get the Market, Gmail, and Youtube vidoes)
(Overclocking it is a nice bonus to gain some more speed.)
Edit: and the 64 views is likely a lot of bots browsing the forums.

Okay. I have one clear last question:
Can it play AVI's (Notice i need it to play avis and not mp4s) With NO LAG on a stable rom, at the moment? Thanks!

I have two nook colors. One for my wife; and one for me. You can watch avi videos on the froyo rom. It is actually pretty smooth. I like the froyo rom because it is very stable and fast. The only issue is that you have to put it to sleep and wake it up when the screen becomes a bit lagging. You can view PDF files by using acrobat reader. For a 250 device, it is well worth.

I too am considering the Nook Color. Sounds like a great entry-level tablet, that once rooted, can give you a great Android Experience at a mere fraction of the cost of newer tablets.
However, I'm likely to wait until the CM team comes out with an official ROM for the thing, as I value stability and smoothness in my devices.
I'm really exited to hear they may even be able to use the on-chip Bluetooth (the chip used has been shown to have Bluetooth hardware, and there has been at least one successful test). Using the Nook Color and a Bluetooth headset to use Skype would be a killer feature!
I'm keeping an eye on developments, and if there ever is a CM ROM for the NC, I'm very likely to buy one.

I didn't notice the lag when I watched the avi video. I also converted the avi videos to m4v format and it worked great from the stock rom

Depends on your avi bitrate and resolution. At 800kbps and 640x360 rock player is smooth and good quality
Note trying to play full 1080 p on tablet is not ideal - after all you only have a 7 inch screen and a lower screen res

I think BT has now been enabled -- but with problems. Let's hope the community finds a way to pair (properly) a blutooth headset.

Woohoo raised this thread from the dead for no apparent reason! I'm fairly sure the OP has either gotten a nook so he'd already be reading about BT in the forums, or he's moved on to something else. Either way why resurrect this thread?

Play videos on Nook Color in full screen

My girl friend have a nook color, We are going to travel, i have some video and want to play them on my gf's nook color, but i donot know what format nook color support, and can play them in full screen.
i google and found some people convert videos to mp4 854*480 can play them in full scream, is it true? the nook color no here I can't test, everyone can help me thanks.

I've had great results with a program called DVD Catalyst. It's just $10.00 and I've used it to has flawlessly and quickly (well, about 40 minutes per movie) convert some 90 of my DVDs for playback on my Nook Color.
Google DVD Catalyst and you'll find the site.

If you don't want to convert just use Moboplayer, it's free. It has options to change the ratio or stretch the screen.

Tip of the day
Just downloaded Catalyst and ripped a DVD, with subtitles and audio.
Catalyst has built-in presets for a lot of devices, including Nook Color, so converting to mp4 was so easy.
It plays perfectly on my Nook, great quality!

also the guy who made DVD Catalyst is a great guy, I was more than happy to support him by buying it and you should do the same if you can (it's great for all mobile devices and is often updated)

The linked video plays fine with the stock NC Gallery player. No special player is needed and you don't even need to root the NC to play it.
Note that the NC automatically scales video to fullscreen. You do not have to encode at 854x480 to fill the screen. Upscaling video to encode is generally not recommended (larger file without better quality). Unless your source is larger than 854x480, you should encode for the NC at the same resolution as the source.

I have a video less than 854 * 480 shot by my cell phone. I want to know if I upscale my 320*240 video to 854 * 480 to play on Nook Color, does the quality will be okay? Thanks for the help!

It was already mentioned by razmajazz here, but if the resolution is less than 854x480, there's no need to upscale--you'll only get a larger file-size, not a better picture. That is, unless you're working with a really great source and doing some very intensive preprocessing in AVIsynth or something AND doing a really great job of reencoding afterwards--and at these resolutions, all that work is not likely to be noticeable in the slightest. The Nook's/player's real-time upscaling should effectively be just as good, realistically (I don't yet own one).

Not sure about that. Agree that re-encoding to higher resolution from same 320x240 source pointless, but as long as video bit rate held constant file size should be pretty much identical.

Yes, very true. I should have said:
* @ same bit-rate, you'll get approx the same file size, but the chances of having any visual improvement over real-time upscaling @ playback, without intense effort, is approximately zero, whereas applying another level of lossy compression resulting in qualitative visual quality loss is in the range of 1 to 0 inclusive.
* @ higher bit-rate, you'll get a larger file size, and still unlikely to have any visual benefit without heavy pre-processing, and again the chances of applying another level of lossy compression resulting in qualitative visual loss is in the range of 1 to 0 inclusive.
* @ lower bit-rate, you'll have a smaller, very likely lower-quality file, with the chances of any potential benefit in picture somewhere in the range 0 to very large values of zero, and benefit of lower file size between 0 and 1 inclusive.

Resolution for Ripping DVDs for Nook

What resolution and file type is best for the Nook Color? I tried one at 1028x563ish and it won't play. I have another that is like 420x800 or something like that and it plays but picture quality isn't quite as good as it could be (worse than streaming content viewed on the nook). What have you guys had work well for you? I have been using mp4 files cause they will play on my nook and my wife's iPad

The search function is your friend...there are whole discussions on this subject. To sum up...854X480 is the Max resolution for hardware based playback. There are multiple links to various handbrake presets...the one I use is set to 1k kbits.

MoBo Player is also your friend. Works well with just about anything.

Try 512x300 (a quarter of the Nook screen) at 600 kbps with 96kbps audio. More than sufficient!
I know it's not as good as the max res the Nook supports but it allows you to put many more movies on it at the same time...

I usually use 852x480... I didn't know about the 854x480 limit - I'm not sure where I got 852 from. I use ffmpeg to rip... the most important thing is to have -vpre baseline in the options or the video may not play. Mp4 supports a ton of different options when encoding, and baseline makes sure that nothing is included that the nook can't handle.

I use handbrake and set video to 1024x576. Mobo plays this perfectly.
I realize this is beyond the max rez, but with Mobo it is gorgeous for playback.

Just note that your battery life will suffer considerably compared to encoding the video so that the DSP can handle decoding.

I use Cucosofts dvd ripper ultimate.this software is capable of converting to just about any format out there.I've had great success with mp4 itouch settings. Set to maximum bit rate for the best picture quality possible.Rips and converts any dvd I've thrown at it.Audio and video quality is great.

Smooth video on nook color, without audio lag?

Hey guys.
I've searched around and tried to find answers on this forum and others, but I can't seem to find anything. If I'm missing something obvious, my apologies.
I have a Nook Color, running CM9 with Android 4.0.3.
I've tried a variety of file types, .wmv, .mp4, .mkv, etc.
I've tried a few players, Dice, MxPlayer, MoboPlayer, VPlayer, and a few others.
All of the combinations I've tried have had problems, some are just low FPS, some have audio either gone completely after a few seconds, or cutting in and out, others have fine audio, but it's a few seconds off the video.
Is there any magic combination I'm missing?
I have HandBrake, should I be converting videos with some special settings to make them play nicely?
Any and all advice is appreciated.

What video are they? Nook at CM9 gets really slow in handling high quality video. It's a matter of hardware.

What kind of video? That's a rather odd question, they're movies. Mostly 720P, if you're asking about the quality.
Should I change which version of CM I have? Would that help?

I am also running CM9 on my Nook Color, and watch movies converted to "M4V" from my DVDs using handbrake software ... using a preset file special for the Nook Color (I have attached a copy of the preset file I have been using with great success). I am very pleased with the quality and performance, no it is not HD quality, but I really don't care because the screen is only 7" wide. I use MxPlayer, set to S/W decoding. Works great for me!

Yes about quality was my question.
720p is the limit of the hardware.
Cm7 could play such videos, but not all of them. Depends on the encoding.

I tried out the preset, and there's a definite improvement. However, the FPS is still a little lacking and the audio is off by a few seconds.
I used MxPlayer, and tried both S/W, and S/W (fast).
I guess I'll just keep playing around with it, unless anyone has any more advice.
