[Q] Antivirus - Off-topic

Hello
I've got 2 things to ask you.
1. you know that sometimes if you have 2 anti-viruses on your pc they can conflict.
Well can that be the same with phones?
2. which phone antivirus is better. ( Lookout mobile security ) or ( Netqin Antivirus )
So far I've got 1 vote for Lookout and 0 votes for Netqin.
Keep posting which you think is the best !

PC: Kaspersky Internet Security 2011
Mobile: Lookout mobile security

PC: Run Linux. Or run Mac if you don't know any better.
Mobile: Use Nokia's latest security feature:

AVG on the phone for me but in your case, lookout is better.

Anti virus is a waste of time. It just uses up cpu cycles.
If you've running windows, then data execution prevention, limited user accounts, not running things from dodgy sites (piracy mainly) and common sense.
Phone: I wouldn't bother, handheld power is still limited.

PC: Avg free, I've tried many and this is very good technically (in Safe Mode is a powerful mode of analysis) and also is free, you do not have to worry about pay or crack.
But, But the best option is linux!! jeje.
Mobile: Um... Is it really necessary?
Best regards!

I don't need mobile antivirus, at least by now

Easy just learn how to crack programs your self there tutorials all over on the basics but you do need a fair bit of computer intel...hell if me a 16 year old can do it I'm sure you can...start out learning c++ or well go the easy way learn somthing like vb first I did the oppisite tho...then you don't have to worry about crap virus sites that you pirate from second of all if you like creating hacks for games ( wich is why I learnd c++ in the first place) get a virus program that dosnt trigger false positives but avg pc tune up 2011 works great for cleaning out your computer for bad files or screwed up crap then get avg anti virus and get rid of crap then start learning how not to get viruses its allways a smart move..unfortunatly I have 2 teen sisters that download bull**** all the time that gives me viruses...and if you fear you have a virus run the deltree command then do a complete reinstall from scratch

+1 again. I haven't used anti-virus software in years and I haven't had a problem. Using a good browser helps tremendously as well

Common Sense is absolutely the best anti-virus. I did tech support for over 10 years and it was only my stupid users that got viruses.
As for removing viruses, having good backups and knowing how to format/rebuild is always your best bet.

Hows Lookout work with root?
Hows Lookout work with root? Curious if it causes any isssues with CW and flashing roms and root packages thinking they are 'exploits' then blocking them.
Anyone hit any conflicts running this (or any other AV) while rooted or is everything good?

I usually use NOD32 for my computer and it works so good. I see a new versión for smartphone and ppc. Anybody know this AV? I don't know what is better.

Fine for me

wow.
You actually went there and compared windows mobile to android hahahah
I am being forced into using the htc hd2 for work.
And windows mobile have to be the biggest piece of **** i have ever had the unfortunate pleasure of dealing with.
The htc hd2 is such an amazing piece of hardware but windows mobile completely kills it.
Why would you even think about doing something like this?
And what software are you talking about? wm more the android?
I cant even find a bank of america, pandora, last.fm simple apps like that for windows mobile.
You are not worthy of the droid.
can a mod please close this thread? it's an obvious troll
hm, who is the troll?
The person who just asked a simple question, or the people who have to run to bash him? Don't think you hard, you might hurt yourself
A dual boot would be kind of cool. The one thing that bothers me the most about android is not having native windows office support. It would be nice to get a real MS office program on my nexus.
I hate the viewers and I'm not really sure I want to try an editing software for $15 which probably is crappy.
This thread fails.

I think this may have its own advantages actually...although I did move from the HD2 to the N1 almost solely for Android...it would be nice to be able to use Windows Phone 7 though (thinking that the games for it would be nice, the preview is nice after all)....
Honestly, if someone made some kind of emulation for it, I'd do it just because "my phone can handle it" etc.
I'm sorry, you missed April Fools Day about 29 days ago! FAIL!
Wow I guess android fan boys are just as rabid as the apple ones. Who knew? I know that it goes against logic that someone may actually like windows mobile..
I came from WM to android because its so boring!...
I luv android and its apps!

It's strange, it's only when scrolling in Finder. After some research, I found that it's called the "ripple", but no solid answers. This started happening randomly after I decided to use the 9600GT card to get better graphics for a few weeks. Once I switched back to the 9400M to save battery life, this started catching my eye.
On a side note, if you're here on this thread just to bash Apple, please do me a favor and leave. kthanx.

Just as a question, have you installed latest graphics drivers. I've had that before on my pc a while ago - I didn't install the right drivers.
Hope it helps - If not, sorry!
Yea, seems like a driver problem, but I'm not that good with macs. Check the nvidia site and look for the most recent drivers.

I appreciate the help . I'll check it out.
edit: As far as I can tell, both drivers are not on the site. The closest they get to Mac OS X is linux...It seems to me that Apple uses their own proprietary versions of the drivers, just like they do for Java. Software Update shows nothing that pertains to gfx drivers...
Damn apple. lol. Try checking the system update, maybe you will find a driver update there.
Lol.
I checked System Update and it only shows a java update and some misc program updates that don't deal with graphics...Oh well. I'll keep looking, thanks for the help.
Worst case scenario, format. Fixes everything. lol
As much as I'd love to...lol
I just restored the harddrive maybe a month ago, after Ubuntu self destructed on me...For some reason it just went all Chernobyl one day...Wouldn't connect to wifi, ethernet, wouldn't build android anymore...And my computer felt hot enough to cook on. Literal meltdown.
I then realized that I could dual-boot Snow Leopard and Leopard, and that I never needed Linux in the first place... I should have partitioned a little more evenly, though, as I made Snow Leopard the majority of the HDD...but I only really use the 50gb Leopard partition I made for Android development...
lol. I just need to stop failing...
you could always make a timecapsule back up to a big portable hd, then restoring from that. it probably won't sort anything as it will just restore what ever is happening, but it always worth a try. i've tried it to fix a few problems, can't remember if it did help.
Turns out the GPU is at fault. Apple is replacing it, fo fweee. So happy, as I'm out of warranty and it's a $300 part.
Thanks for all your suggestions!
Lol @ $300 part. I will not go into detail of Apple's pricing.

I would recommend AV for only the remote lock, wipe, and gps features in case of theft/loss. There are other, non AV apps that do this too though. Such as Seekdroid.

+1 for Seekdroid
Haven't had to put it to use thankfully but if my phone ever does get stolen, I feel bad for the poor fellow who gets his hands on it... Very powerful app! Can remotely track the device, activate an alarm if you've lost it at home, lock the phone remotely and even do a full wipe, all from your web browser. Currently inside my house and it locates me to an accuracy of 4 meters... And the BEST part, IMO, you can HIDE it from the app drawer on the phone itself!
And as mentioned earlier, Antivirus is not needed. 99.9% of apps that come through the Market are safe.
Thank you all. I am aware that there are hardly any viruses out there for android devices, but i am currently in the midst of trying.. keyword: trying to root my phone, and i dont want to put any viruses from the files i download from the PC, onto my beloved smartphone, so once again thanks guys
and if any one has some free time and would be willing to guide me through the process of getting rid of bloatware (ive already rooted my phone, and backed up everything i just dont know what to do next) i would be willing to ship 10$ =)

Download Script Manager from the market, then run one of the debloating scripts in the dev section. There's one by psouza and another one, I used the other one. It has options to keep certain apps in the script.

The 2011 version also has real-time driver distraction monitoring, ID 10-T error updating, and for some reason a toolbar.
I think AV is good enough. Added feature is that you get remote wipe if your phone ever gets lost.

FYI common sense doesn't protect you from things such as exploit and web script based infections.
I personally use Lookout. But honestly its not something you need to worry about too much, yet. But I'm sure its going to be a problem next year. Play it safe and only install apps that have high install counts on the market and high ratings.

Well, unless you are doing A LOT of side loading (installing non market apps) from random sites or are using pirated applications there is absolutely no need for anti-virus on a linux based system..
You as the end user are 100% in control of what apps gain permission and using common sense by looking at what permissions your giving said applications is up to you to decide.
The only virus I've heard of was found in china and pretty sure it was a side loaded application and it would steal data like phone numbers and e-mail addresses and the person was selling the information to spam sites.
Like I said though, if your just downloading apps from the android market your fine.

Your right, android already does that. Unless someone writes a script/exploit to get around asking permissions for root since the browser doesn't run as a root application. Android has very high security when it comes to web browsing. Remember, we are talking about linux.
In my opinion the best protection is a firewall, DroidWall does the job well.

Minidump file - anyone lend a hand reading it?

I just had a BSOD – freaked me out because I'm working on assignments at the moment and a dead PC would be disastrous.
I tried installing the debugging tool to read it but it tells me it couldn't locate the file path during installation – its sounding like its just not liking its own install exe...
I'm using Windows Vista, and I did go for the right version as far as I'm aware, so I'm not sure what's going on. I tried downloading it again etc, no luck. I'll probably spend as much time trying to sort out the debugging tool's issues as working out a solution for whatever caused the crash... so...
If someone who has the debugger installed is feeling like generating some positive karma for themselves by doing a quick read-over as to suspected problem I'd be immensely grateful (this doesn't do justice to how grateful I'd be...)
minidump is below:

Use Windows 7 or XP.
Usually a normal restart works. Although, it might be a good idea to find out the reason for the BSOD.

Yeah, well aware of Vista's issues. Its been pretty much fine, until this BSOD.
Parents' PC is XP but not at home for a few weeks, and have assignments to do in that time, hence wanting to know if there's something I should be doing to stop a more catastrophic event...
Just one BSOD?
Wouldn't crap your pants over that to be honest..............

Nope.
The reason I'm more concerned about this BSOD is that my graphic card has had a tendency to overheat if I play games and shuts itself off to prevent damamge, and even with simple things like word processing / net surfing it sits in the 70sC if I don't force the fan up to 60%.
Case cover is off to help - it started happening after coming back from holidays. Cleaned it out best I could but didn't help the overheat issue, so some mysterious thing happened to it while I was gone.
If it is the graphic card that's caused that BSOD then I need to seriously bring forward my plans to upgrade my PSU to get a newer card before it causes any significant dmage to other parts.
I was putting it off until holidays (in 3 weeks now, but been happening since Feb).
It's things like this that make me glad that I've stayed on xp for all these years. Have you tried a restore point? I think it could be your graphics card doing it when it shuts itself down.

Bloat Ware

anyone could post a pic of how much bloatware can be removed and also how much is installed? anyon disabled any or removed any? If so with what app? Mine will be here tomorrow
I used package disabler pro and was able to block everything i wanted (about 35 apps right now). I disabled the system updates first. Then the Verizon stuff. Then the traditional bloat. Then the samsung and google unwanted apps.
I used to disable apps to get better battery life, but i'm not sure it matters much on this device, as i can easily go 2 days in a poor service area. Since it's poor service, i only get about 4 hours of OST in those 2 days, but i'm sure i could get 6 in a single day.
A few I've disabled on all my phones.

What are those ANT apps for? I see you disabled both Chrome and the stock browers, which browser are you using? Thanks
Sent from my SM-T800 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
ANT (supposedly a universal method) allows developers to connect, monitor, and control ANT devices. These are wireless hardware such as health and fitness devices. However, even when disabled, I have no issue with my smart watches and any other NFC/Bluetooth gadget. As far as the browser, I use Adblock Browser, simply to reduce social footprint. I personally do not have a moral or ethical position against Google collecting my data; however, I was getting tired of junk e-mail. The Adblock Browser is clean, fast, and it blocks cookies and tracking codes.

Thank you very much for your reply. Now I have more stuff I can safely disable. Adblock sounds nice. I use Chrome. I have a love hate thing with it. I like that I can sync all of my computers and portable devices settings like bookmarks, etc. But it is a heavy handed resource hog.
