So, Launcher Pro + has just been released, and he's charging 3 bucks for it.
This is my question, How do I get it onto my rooted Captivate? I know it's only 3 dollars, but I'd rather know how to get it on before I actually buy it. Know what I mean?
It isn't available in the market yet, so we have to send him a paypal directly.

side load it with droid explorer? That guy did a great job with launcher pro.

Quit being cheap and support a developer that worked hard to make a beautiful piece of software.
As you said, it's only 3 dollars.
This is my first android phone. I promise developers will get my money but you have no reason to call anyone cheap. It was a question. If you have a problem with my questions don't read them.
So, what is droid explorer?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
oh i didnt see that you wanted to know how to do it illegally. Droid explorer is program that helps sideload apps. Just do a search for captivate and droid explorer or look through our sideloading apps threads.
On the piracy note, its not ok to discuss such things here because not only is it morally incorrect but xda has to own up for the activities of its users.
btw, because the new launcher pro + costs money, i highly recommend getting the launcher pro regular. Launcher pro truly shines in its speed and flexibility not its widgets. You can always dl more widgets for free from the marketplace. Ofc i will buy his launcher pro + when it comes to market just on principle because of the great launcher alternative he has provided free of charge for everyone to use.

sho does, you should pay for it and then he will provide you with an apk to install it with. Droid explorer can take care of the rest. There are other alternatives as well. You should read the sideloading apps threads here in the captivate forums because there is alot of information you should go over b4 attempting and getting frustrated and giving up. Post for help there if you still dont understand after reading through .
Thanks! And just to clear the air, I do not believe in piracy. Developers work too hard on their products. I've paid for most of my programs with Nokia and Apple, just as I will here. I just didn't know how to do it!
I'll look up droid explorer and read that thread. Thanks for the help
Launcher Pro is a mad awesome app. I would pay 10.00 or more for it. I swear my Captivate is TWICE as fast as The iPhone 4 i just returned to At&t.
The dev states it will be in the App market soon, at least thats how I took it from reading his website.

I'm stating that he should buy it. If it doesn't work I can almost guarantee that the developer would give him a refund.
Next time you're at a car dealership, steal a car for me so I can drive it for a week.... I want to make sure it "works" with my style of driving before I purchase it..
Launcher Pro in the market is almost exactly the same as the plus version, but without the custom widgets included. Other than that it's the same. No need to steal.
He didnt say anything about pirating it. He said he wants to buy it but is not sure how to install a non market app. He is just doing a little pre purchase research.
Would you buy a car before or after you learned to drive?

Ugh, you think you can get away from Trolls who can't read, or at least piece together what someone says.
Not once did I say I wanted to pirate software. I said that I don't know how to put a non-market app on a device since AT&T will not allow it. So why would I spend my money on something that I can't put on there?
Do you buy 18 inch tires for your 16 inch rims, just because bridgestone makes a good tire? No. Sheesh, just leave me alone SkYz.

Why would you need to do that? You have "paper work" to back you up. You think Paypal is going to refund you for downloading a program that you should have researched if it was compatible with your phone or not? That is what he is trying to do. Next time just give him his answer.
You could have been like "Yes, I have it installed right now."

Why not just install the free version and see if you like it and if so upgrade to the paid version.
Also under settings - applications - unknown sources is where you can install apps from the market that would usually not install. --- Did ATT cripple that in the Captivate??

Has anyone given the AT&T apps a good try to see if any of them are good to keep?
I see instructions out there on how to wipe AT&T off of our phone, but haven't seen anybody comment on why they're wiping the apps off besides to "get rid of the AT&T apps".
I'm just wondering if there might not be one or two of the included apps that are actually worthwhile to keep.
I know one I won't be sorry to delete is the mobiTV one. I loaded it up to the welcome screen then had to step away for a couple minutes. When I came back it kindly told me my 2 minute trial was up... LOL nice! So yeah, unless it really is an incredible piece of software worth buying I'll be dumping that one at least.
Many if not all require additional fees and subscriptions, despite free alternatives.
For example, the AT&T navigator app is $10 a month, but Google Maps is free.
There's also the matter of principle... the fact that AT&T made them non-removable is a compelling reason to get rid of them.
The only at&t app worth using is the att my wireless app that you can down load from the market place. It lets you keep track of your minutes usage, data usage, and change your plan.

I agree. Funny thing is, that's the only app AT&T didn't preinstall on the phone IIRC. I guess they expect you to pay money for their crappy services by default (or by mistaken clicks), but don't want you to have a way to track it so easily.

This is a Samsung app. We'll get it in new ROMS.
Look at about 1:05 on this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3QwvMsBGjE
Yeah I have to say that music app is pretty nice.
Although I just installed one called "Moodagent" that is kind of neat. Haven't had a chance to fully explore it, but it appears to have quite a few features along with the main interface that's a bit gimicky, but cool. It has sliders that you adjust up or down (Sensual, Tender, Happy, Angry, Tempo) and it adjusts the playlist according to the levels you set. Probably old news to everyone else but interesting to me!
everything that is labeled att_nameofprogram is pretty much useless. the other programs like allshare or instant messaging may still be usefull.
Allshare
If you interest in using DLNA, the Allshare app may be a good one to keep. Although, I have one major problem with it: you can only add 1 song at a time to the Queue. What a pain.
But I haven't found any good alternatives yet.
I opened the 'Where' app, and (stupidly) breezed past some part about a monthly charge if I don't cancel. Has anyone else run into this? And if so, do you know how to cancel?
"Where" does AT&T get the idea they can charge for this?
You probably want to call AT&T ASAP to make sure you don't get charged for using the Where app. Also, stop using the included one and download the free one!
Funny story about the Where app:
I had a Nexus One and saw that Where was on a lot of "best app" lists for Android so I went to the market to get it. It was nowhere to be found. After a bit of research, I found some vague explanation about how AT&T had a deal with Where and that they blocked it. This really pissed me off since I paid full price for the N1 with no subsidy from AT&T -- how dare they block apps? Anyway, I found the APK online and installed it.
Later, I rooted my phone and installed the MarketAccess app. Now I could find Where in the Market and installed it from there -- still free of course. When I got the Captivate, the first thing I did was root it. When I saw that Where was pre-installed, I thought "great, now I don't have to jump through hoops to get it." Luckily I saw the warning about being charged, what, $2.99/month to use an app that is free for every user of every other Android phone? I promptly used Titanium Backup to remove the pre-installed version and then used MarketAccess to download the free version from the Market.
The point is that AT&T is really trying hard to charge extra for things that every other Android user gets for free (maps, navigation, Where, etc). Very frustrating. My employer pays for the service on my Captivate and I will be moving my wife's phone (that I pay for) to the Epic 4G at the end of this month after being an AT&T customer for 7 years.
What about AT&T Hot Spots?
I visit Starbucks frequently and occasionally McDonalds. Both offer free WiFi, but require you to check a box and click a button to agree to terms before using it. I know that's not a big deal, but it is a little bit of a hassle especially if I am not planning to use the browser anyway -- I just want to go straight into another app that uses WiFi.
Since I got the Captivate, I've noticed that as soon as I turn on WiFi while at either of these places, I get a notification that says "AT&T Hotspot Detected" or something like that and I am able to use WiFi without having to visit the agreement page in the browser.
Does anyone know whether this app is required for this detection and agreement bypass to function? I have thought about making a backup with Ti Backup, uninstalling, and testing it but am worried that it might not reinstall properly. Also, it might be handy for finding hotspots when traveling -- making it the only useful AT&T pre-installed app.
ATT wifi hotspot app seems to be useful to connect to Attwifi hotspots without having to manually agree to terms
does anyone have a copy of it ?

I have it and will try to make a backup and post it within the next couple of days. It might be Monday before I can do it, unless someone else beats me to the punch.
Update: I still have it on my phone, but it seems that Titaniun Backup only backs up the data, not the APK. I also tried Mybackup Pro with the same result. I have root, so if someone knows how to extract a system app as an APK please let me know. I haven't searched yet, BTW, so if I find out how to do this myself I'll update this post (again).

My first pet peeve. What can I say, even Google is not immune to hiring morons.
But I suspect it is because they don't want a bunch of negative reviews on apps that are not designed for the tablet yet. However, it should still be available for the tablet features apps.
BTW, it's so annoying that the Facebook widget doesn't work on Honeycomb and neither does Pandora. Jeez.

Since honeycomb ecosystem is not yet evolved, they make it harder for zoom users to post bad comments and bad ratings. They did it on purpose. They were smart to do this in a sence. But it makes me hate their guts a bit.

I wouldn't say that... If developers want to go with the times, they can't simply ignore honeycomb. I'm sure they are thinking about it alright. I agree it's annoying... but just give it some time.

you can't even update that way because you didn't buy it through market.
getjar apps don't get updates unless the publisher puts them on there, in which case you have to download it manually.
for example, the current version of tapatalk is actually 1.12.7, but getjar only has the 1.12.6 version.
but hey, free stuff is free stuff

good to know, i'm actually new to it too. i knew of it but heard more on twit/all about android. honestly i thought the Gold program was still a paid (like subscription) deal so i never checked it out. but yeah its totally awesome.
as with all alternative app stores, the updating is an issue but they are aware of it and working towards better solutions. right now it really is mainly on the developers who have to push their apps to different stores which is tedious. but yeah, i'm totally into free stuff even if its a version behind. if i need it that bad, i can support the dev and buy it via market.
Is SPB Shell in there? No way in hell I'm paying $15 for a launcher that I'll be bored with in one day.

As best I can tell, it's a great way to try out paid versions - especially when the paid version is more than just ad-free. If I find it worth while (and that it's worth the price to have the most recent version) I'll probably end up paying for the most recent version.

I can't get the Amazon Appstore app to install. It gives me the message "Do you want to install this application? It will get access to:" then a list of areas and boxes for cancel or install. When I click install nothing happens. The cancel box works. (I did check the unknown sources in settings)
If it is being blocked by Google, that would suck.

Not true it's working for me. Go to Amazon& request a new link to be sent to your email.

Thats strange, i was able to do it on my N7. Maybe a reboot of some sort?
Works fine here. Go into Setting>Security and check Allow unknown sources. Go to Amazon web site and follow instructions to download and install. Did that to download an older version of a zombie killing game that works on N7.
Works fine for me. I use it every day to get the free "cr"app of the day.
Try rebooting it then re-installing.
If you're installing it from a previous backup from another device, it most likely won't work (not assuming you are, but just in case...) Like the others said, go to Amazon and get it directly and you should have no problem.
What worked for me was clicking the link for tablets. It says something like "no email or phone number, click here" and that downloaded the APK directly into my system download folder. From there it installed just fine. I had to do this to get it on my Google TV also. It seems to bypass some sort of test since the Google TV isn't officially compatible with it.
I just worked with an Amazon tech, got it to install using by going to this like in the browser on the N7.
http://www.amazon.com/app-email
Works fine now.
Mine installed fine. I used the APK from my phone. Got a bunch of the nicer FAOTD apps working perfectly too.

I find it incredible that everyone is giving Amazon a free pass for contributing to the Android Malware myth.
The fact you have to enable side loading on an Android phone to allow Amazon, means any other malware could also slip in. Using Amazon app store is a REALLY bad idea (plus the fact it's a barren wasteland compared to Google Play, and most of the apps are really out of date versions).
Surely the lure of free versions of old apps is not that strong that you want to open your phone up to allsorts of Android malware nasties?

Bugger the Apps they get games too. Of course only if you're from a certain country.
Majority of the free apps are a joke.

1. I've never once gotten malware and I always sideload apps. I always leave that setting unticked as do most folks I'm sure.
2. having Amazon app store or any other app store doesn't change your default android Google play store.
You want malware, go download Blackmarket apps or pirate stuff, you'll get it then. I do suggest tho, that everyone should install a malware scanner. Avast, lookout, etc.

What? Side loading doesn't put you at any greater risk of malware. You always choose to install an app, whether you side loaded it or not.
Nothing wrong or risky with downloading the Amazon app store, being able to choose a different app store is one of the best things about android. CHOICE.
