Hey guys, I just seem to be having some lag problems with my NC. So I want to do a full wipe and flash my new rom/kernal.
I have made a bootable uSD card with CWR and my ROM (CM7) and Kernal of my choice. My question is here.
Which partitions do I need to manualy wipe using CWR? Do I need to mount any specific partition like /system to achieve a true full wipe?

I want to do a full wipe of all data when going from ROM to ROM installing to EMMC.
So far each time I install, some files are left over in one or other area.
I have yet to find a complete answer/quide on how to go about completely cleaning everything before installing a new ROM?
(Ideally the equivalent of formating and partitioning before installing Windows...)
At the moment I am cautious to try the WIPES and FACTORY RESET options in CWM as I have not found a solid answer as to what they do here.
(Is CWM the way to go here?)

Let me see if I understand this correctly, you're saying you manually format each partition under CWR and are sketched about using the factory reset function? Ive both wiped and flashed between various emmc based roms as well as EXT4 based roms to the (EXT2?) based roms without a problem. Each time I use the correct CWR and manually format /system, /data, and /cache. If i'm understanding your question correctly then I hope this helps. It may not be the fix you're looking for but it works.

What is the difference between factory reset/wipe and formating the system/data partitions?
Is there anything on the boot partition that might get left over?

I am about to install CM7. I currently Have Nookie Froyo 0.6.8 with CWM 3.0.0.5. I believe I need to update to CWM 3.0.1.0 first. Do I need to wipe / format the boot partition first or will the update to CWM / CM7 do that? What data lives in boot curerntly and what would be a situation / reason for wiping the boot partitition? When is it ever done?

Not needed,running cwm will handle everything. Also the boot should stay so that SD keeps priority for recovery reasons.
There is a ROM Manager option to wipe data/cache, this should be done if changing rom types (ex nookie to CM7) but isn't usually needed between minor versions of the same rom unless issues arise.
It wipes the boot sequence, doesn't matter what rom you're going too, you need the boot data.
I've wiped it twice. Both times required I restored to stock before moving to a custom rom. Just wipe data and cache, and you'll be fine.
when going from nookie Froyo to CM7, you are changing the file system from EXT-3 to EXT-4. Remember to format /system /data /chache, and wipe Dalvik-cache within CWM 3.0.1.0 before installing the CM7 rom. By formating the three partitions in CWM 3.0.1.0 you upgrade the file system.
There is almost never a reason to format /boot. You will only cause problems that are annoying to fix.
Remember to do a backup in CWM before you format and flash CM7. You never know.

Sorry guys need to ask. I have checked out the forums and i think this hasnt been asked before. Again sincere apologies if it has.
I am using an incredible s, just got it s-off and rooted and was about to flash Android Revolution HD from my sd card.
As part of the process I had to flash 4XT recovery which I have.
I just need to check, whenever I go into recovery is says the following :
"You currently have some EXT3 partitions ->If you wipe/format. I will use EXT3 You can however explicitly wipe EXT4 by visiting the "ext" <-> ext menu
If you are on an EXT4 Rom, you may want to conver the partitions to EXT4. Open the ext3 <-> ext4 menu to do that"
I know I will have to flash a wipe file before flashing the new rom.
Do I need to do anything to address the details above or can I just contiune as normal?

Thanks, the wipe will be done through flashing the file "Android_Revolution_HD_Super_Wipe" am I corrent?
Also, how do I convert the partitions? I read some threads where people bricked their phones by playing around with the Partitions on the SD card. Not sure if this would mess me up as well
Any insight?
You don't have to wipe or convert! Just flash super_wipe.zip you mentioned, it will do everything for you. It cannot be easier

I think its the easiest way to create partition.
Or else you can do it in pc via partition managers(i use minitool partition wizard)

one question is left:
what happen if i format the partioned sd-card under windows and do a full wipe in preparation for installing a new rom. i've read sd-ext even survive a full wipe? what does that mean? stays the partition untouched when i format the sd-card with windows? and what about the apps in the partition? are they still there even after a full wipe and can i use them after flashing a new rom out of the box?

Now if you format the fat32 partition in windows using those partition tools doesnt affect ur ext. Ext stays untouched but all the data on fat32 will be wiped(so backup first to pc)
If u want to merge there is an option called merge for that.
There is an free windows software called sdformatter, that formats the entire sdcard(fat32+ext)

i do beleive that it should be untouched, cos normally windows cannot see the ext partition and hence only fat32 will be formatted

when i flash a new rom i use the format.zip form the xda user temasek which wipes system, boot, data and cache. so is sd-ext untouched when i use this file?
You insist on not listening and/or not understanding.
When you select "wipe data/factory reset" in custom recovery, EXT partition IS WIPED COMPLETELY. It doesn't stay.
I believe the same happens when using temasek's script, never bothered using it, so I can't say with 100% certainty.
If you don't wipe your phone and install a new ROM - be prepared for crashes of anything to everything, unless you install a ROM which is 100% compatible with what you have already - the next generation of the same ROM, usually.
If you're using A2SD and don't wipe EXT partition - you'll have crashes as soon as you boot, since system apps' data will be there (and wrong).
To keep your apps and their data, use one of the backup apps available in the Market, like Titanium Backup.
as Jack_R1 explained its always better to wipe everything(system,cache,dalvik n sdext) to be on safer side to avoid crashes n FCs.

Temasek's Extreme Wipe does Data/System/Boot partitions but don't remember seeing ext in the list
However, as alluded too, I would format all outside phone with sdformatter or I think gparted, although never used that one
I thought I read a long time ago Windows formatter not recommended and do a full wipe not partial with whatever you use
Back up sdcard first
also, I believe you can use the Alignment Cool zip to get ext 4 from 3 on Amon and not lose anything--still backup
you do know MeDroid uses Ia2sd and different from a2sd on implementation
You don't need to wipe the regular FAT partition on SD card between flashes, because there's nothing there that loads automatically. And "wipe data/factory reset" option in recovery also wipes /sdcard/.android_secure.

No, the apps aren't there anymore - or to be correct, the apps are there, their data is gone (because the app data doesn't reside on EXT partition, unless you use specific mounting methods).
When you flash an updated version of your ROM, just don't wipe anything at all unless the instructions specifically mention having to wipe before installing that version. That means - don't execute temasek's script at all.
what does these commands in mount & storage of cwm recovery do?
format cache (is it same as wipe cache?)
format system (is it same as factory reset in cwm?)
format data
format preload
format sd card
format emmc
does it hold significance to perform any of these operations during a full wipe for installing a new rom.

even thought its now called obsolete, I still perform those steps catered to my n7000. As posting suggest a bit overkill, but did prevent a load of issues cause installs are overkill clean.
At own risk of course and best from safe kernel. Id recommend it to everyone going from gb to ics, from ics to gb or even between customs roms.

format preloadI hope this is for preloaders which loads before starting the OS.
format sd cardThis will format your Internal SD Card
format emmcThis will format your External SD Card.
Wiping Cache/Dalvik/Data is required to perform a clean install of new rom. There is no need to use these commands unless you want a completely new phone without data (Including Internal/External SD Card).

note sometimes emmc and sd are switched, I think in some roms this is the case. I always suggest to take external out, just in case Been there done that

unfortunately i realized that way too late, after formatting Sdcard (External card in my case). leaving me with a blank emmc (supposedly internal sdcard).
