I have tried several times using GIMP to change the colors of some of the 9.png files in the drawables-finger folder in the Contacts.apk file. It just will not work out for me. All I do is use the colorize option or the channel mixer. The pictures (specifically the btn_dial_action_left_pressed.9.png, etc) will not show up right on the phone. I can't figure it out. If you can, I'd like to know.
i don't use gimp i use paint.net and a 13 year old cope of adobe photoshop.after you make the color change did you use the 9 png. tool you will need to

I tried the png 9 tool in the AndroidSDK package and was reading Damnitpud's walkthrough. The Eclipse part is what gets me because I don't understand it.

Kron2, do we need to apply to constacts.apk, phone.apk and framework-res.apk for this to work?
There are these 3 files listed. Which one?

Thanks for the info.
I have made gifs for a custom boot screen and have been playing around with getting it them to work.
I flash over the previous bootscreen it reboots, my images show but then when they are meant to be animated the image gets scrambled and makes no sense, i did rather cheekily just replace the .gifs from someone elses custom boot screen and signed the zip file.
does anyone know whats going wrong or can anyone point me in the direction of creating the files to go with the gifs so i can get this working.
Cheers
John
They need to be in indexed 255 colors. And they mustn't have any transparent layers. Then they should work just fine.
ahh tristan...you've learnt well... ;D
cheers for the help gents, will try it in the morning.
hmm this is annoying, i have my gif files all built nicely but not using indexed 255 .... does anyone know of a tutorial for converting it without loosing all animations? im searching the net at the moment but no luck
gimp -> image -> mode -> indexed
Will it change a current gif or do i have to make the frames again in gimp?
It works through all the frames.
just used gimp under ubuntu, opened the animations selected image >> mode >> indexed flashed my boot files and they are still not displaying right, beter as you can see part of the animation playing but its far from perfect.
shal i just try creating the images again? or has anyone got any other suggestions?
thanks for everyones help so far though
John
Hello, first post here. I am having the same problems as jonny in creating a custom bootscreen. The first frame of my animation will show before it scrambles. Iam using photoshop. I created my animation in imageready, imported to photoshop, made an indexed 255 color palate and went back to imageready and loaded the palate. I feel like I'm missing something obvious.
BTW, I love this forum. You are all great. I am learning so much. Recently created my own lockscreen, and after I can get the bootscreen down I want to try my hand at the taskbar icons
I swapped to GIMP image editor (which is 100% free) to actualy animate my gifs in indexed 255, i did it in photoshop but it didnt work for some reason even when using indexed 255 colour.
Okay, after much fooling around, I finally got it to work properly . In case anyone cares, here's what I did:
Created the animation in PS (didn't realize you could do animation in PS and didn't need IR) to how I want it to run. Once it looks exactly how you want it, click "Flatten frames into layers". Now delete your original layers so all you have left is the animation frames. Save PSD and open it in GIMP. Go to file, save as, and save as a gif. Click the "save as animation" and "convert to indexed" (that is the key right there) bubbles, and click "export" then save.
Viola! now more problems. I can't figure out how to post it as a gif, but it is the boot process from windows xp.
so im trying to teach myself how to make morphs so i can make my own themes. i downloaded gimp and the white invert bar mod for metamorph. i unzipped it and started to edit the images i wanted. i figured out the statusbar_background is the image u edit to change ur status bar color. but for some reason anytime i try to edit the image i cant. i try to fill in an area with say red and it just goes a dark grey color. this also happens wenever i try to edit the 3g images and so on.(wenever i try to use the colorize option on gimp it says can not edit rng layers or something like that). but if i try to edit the status_bar_header_background.9 image i can edit it fine. can someone help me and tell me wut im doing wrong. ive sat here for hours searching and trying to figure it out on my own. sorry if this is not in the rite section i wasnt sure were to post that it would get read
is the image set to grayscale instead of RGB?
my personal recommendation would be to create a new image of exactly the same dimensions, do whatever you want to it and save it with the appropriate name.
I dont have photoshop, but i need to have a see through or opaque picture to use as my lockscreen background. can anyone help me, or even make a quick one? with a grey background if its opaque.
BUMP! come on people someone must have photoshop, this would only take 5 minutes.
doesn't the one from the other thread work?....
http://www.mediafire.com/imageview.php?quickkey=idhtmtuqyrm
..... Then have a play with DroidExplorer?... apparently it can do the ADB stuff for you......
EDIT..... Droid Explorer - 0.8.6.0 [06/19/2010] - Conan O'Brian Edition
Why someone with photoshop. It's just as doable with Gimp, a totally free image editor.
i dont have an image editor, slash i didnt know that. And its not the actual lock screen or anything i need.
i downloaded lockbot and you can use your own image as the background, so if i got a transparent one then i would have a transparent lockscreen..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=707599
i modified the file from Cronos 1.7.1 so i'm not sure it will work for villainrom...
if you do want to try it ... do a nandroid or bart backup before you PUSH the file onto /system/framework folder
i think i tried that one before, but i'm not sure, i'll give it a shot.
it says verification failed?
If your looking to set an image as a lockscreen background its not as easy as having a transparent image. Android does not treat it as if it is transparent.
Hoping someone can work out a fix soon though.
oh i see. well thats helpful thanks. Also when trying to flash all these zips that people are putting together for me, when i try to flash them i get an error "verification failed"!!

There was a Vanilla ROM with transparent locksscreen. I think it even was SuperHero and I remember it coz people did not like transparent lockscreens. It made screen look messy. Also some other vanilla ROMs have semi transparent lockscreens - it shows only wallppaper, not all icons and widgets - which I found very cool, especially if you like live wallpapers. I want to make it work on sense ROMs, don't know how so

The images are a .9 type. That means there is a black border around the images which you can't mess with. You need to get the original pictures, and do it again, but without touching the borders. So in gimp, that means you should use colorize, or colorfy.

I added the SystemUI file and the statusbar file.

I have also wondered about this. If I changed one of those statusbars in a theme that was a .9 png to a standard screen width statusbar image, and renamed the png to statusbar_background.png in the drawable folder and in the XML, would that work? Or would I need to make other changes?

So someone can do it for me ?
Didnt work will try again

No, I'm 99% sure that won't work. I say that because I've modified images and in renaming, I accidentally deleted the ".9" leaving just ".png". My tweaked image did not show up and instead, it still displayed the stock.9.png.
I'm gonna assume that you know how to modify .9's correctly. If not, here is a new tutorial I just saw without even searching. There are several others out there both here and on you tube. I could help as well if need be.
As long as you know how to modify and recompile .9.png's, here is a nice little shortcut for modding any system apk as the OP originally inquired about. Start by decompiling your apk. Modify whatever .9's you want and use one of the MANY tools (one is linked in the tutorial above) to recompile each individual .9.png. Once all of your .9.png's are recompiled, open the COMPILED apk you are modding using 7zip as someone mentioned above. (Left click, go to 7zip, open archive) Then navigate to res/drawable-hdpi/ and just drag your new, modified images in to the folder overwriting the old ones. Close the 7zip window and you are all done. Pretty simple. MAKE A BACK UP (just in case) and then adb push it to your system folder or use root explorer to copy and paste it.
I'd love to go into more detail, but I gotta run. I hope this helps a little. Trust me, I am no computer guy. A year ago, I didn't even know what "root" meant. I've learned everything from reading these forums and having some questions answered by other helpful users. Good luck

I usually just change the Status Bar backdrop in the Mdpi folder, then sign it.

Problem is, some statusbars can't use a .9, as they aren't a solid color the whole way through. Excellent writeup by the guy a couple posts above me by the way. But I just wonder what the best way to change the statusbar background from a .9 to a full 320xWhatever (for mdpi) png is. Can it be done? Am I being clear? Because sometimes I don't make much sense

I certainly can't speak for every rom or every phone, (and maybe this isn't exactly what you are referring to) but this is an old statusbar I made for a MIUI theme that worked just fine as a .9. If turned horizontal, the middle stayed the same size and both of the solid colored sides would stretch. Actually, the sides are a black to grey gradient.
Try this....
Draw9patch is the tool used for creating .9 images, it is included in the android sdk.
1 .Navigate to the tools folder at the dos prompt and type Draw9patch.
2 .Drag and drop the image to be edited into the window that opens up when you hit return.
3. Press press shift and select one pixel at two corners of the image (diagonally opposite)
Then simply save 9 patch image from file menu.
Make sure you name it as-- yourfilename.9.png
It works for me anyway

So with this tool, you can take a full blown statusbar, say the one a few posts above, or one with gradients and such, and make it into a .9? I wish I'd known about that earlier!
