[Q] Question regarding 2708+ and hboot 1.33.0013d - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Noob here, I was not allowed to post on the development forum so I had to put this here:
I recently managed to flash the ported CM6.1 with 2708+ kernel following this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9055790#post9055790 and this http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/11548-cm61-2708port-for-new-radiospl/
Everything works atm and no FC's etc.
However, i really want to modify my MTDPartitions so i can make the CACHE really small and get more space for storing apps on the phone. I have read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893706 guide and have used firerat's mtdpartitioner before i moved to hboot-1.33.0013d.
my problem is, hboot-1.33.0013d has s-on and does that mean I cant repartition my G1 for extra space?
Is it possible to keep the 2708+ kernel with a different SPL so i get the extra ram(from the kernel) AND the extra space(from repartitioning)?? Can you point me in the right direction?
I know basic adb and fastboot commands if they are required.
Thanks for reading

There is no problem in using CustomMTD and 1.33.0013d in parallel. (As you can see in my signature, I am running the same configuration)
With CustomMTD you have to pass the partition layout to the kernel (that's the reason why you have to patch recovery- and boot- kernel separately), but it's completely independent of the hboot you have installed. Follow the instructions of Firerat's CustomMTD thread (the link you can find in my signature, too) and you are fine, s-on /s-off has no influence on it.

Thanks, just one more thing from me.
Is there a way of either using adb or terminal on the phone to view how much space is used on each partition. Like how Firerat has done here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=717874
That would be very helpful because I am trying to slim down the SYSTEM partition while I am at it, to get maximum space out of the phone
EDIT: What size would you recommend that i allocate each partition and how much free space on the SYSTEM partition should I leave? does it matter?

try
Code:
adb shell df -h
or go into terminal on your phone and use
Code:
df -h
so for each mounted partition you can see, how big it is, how much space is allocated and how much space is still free

Depends much on the ROM you would like to install. I am running 90/2, i.e. 90MB for /system, 2MB for /cache and about 117 MB for /data. CM 6.0/6.1 need less space on /system, others (especially sense-ROMs) probably more.

Just tried removing necessary native apps, failed cos it broke facebook... couldnt be bothered with it because it only saved like ~4MB
followed the instructions and using 90/2.
somehow, i broke gapps, none of the google stock apps are working, should i reflash gapps or is it more complicated than that? will i need to start all over again?

What apps / programs did you remove? How did you do it? Did you make a nandroid backup first?
Sent from my Gingerbread on Dream using XDA App

I did take a nandroid back up, i removed:
Email.apk
HtcCopyright.apk
LatinIME.apk
LiveWallpaperPicker.apk
PicoTts.apk
Protips.apk
UserDictionaryProvider.apk
VoiceDialer.apk
VpnServices.apk
I have already tried restoring through nandroid, then wiping data/cache through factory reset then restoring. No luck
reflashing all over again
EDIT: reflashed worked until I rebooted, then it is stuck on the G1 splash screen. I can still get into recovery... any ideas? I guess I will just stay off mtd for now *sigh*

Did you do the nandroid before or after patching the kernel? If you took it before, you have to repatch, otherwise the partition layout doesn't match.
Another hint: do a
fastboot erase system -w
First, then go to recovery and restore your backup. After restoring you probably need to reflash the FR_boot_xxx.zip, depends when you took the backup, i.e. whether the kernel was already adapted to cMTD or not.
Sent from my Gingerbread on Dream using XDA App

I did the nandroid before i did the mtd. I am trying the flashboot now
EDIT: tried it, used 2 different nandroid back ups. both times i ended up with gapps FC-ing all the time and no phone app.
EDIT2: nvm, I just reflashed from scratch, it all works fine now. I just wont touch mtd and stuff for now.
case closed. Thanks for the help

I have JF 1.5 installed still and think its about time to upgrade. I have the latest radio but I think I need to update my spl which is the latest version I need to use this rom. Also I have partition magic so I can use that to format the sd card for apps 2 sd right? , I just do a ext2 on one half and ext3 on the other then cops all the files from the zip of 1.7 to the root of the sd card or do I have to put the app folder on ext3 and everything else on ext2 then just flash into recovery and update with the img? sorry for the questions I rooted my phone like 9 months ago and pretty much forgot everything I read and learned.
also I do have root access because I can use wifi teather and other root things but when I went to install cyanogen recovery Image and I go to terminal and type in mount /sdcard it tells me SDcard not found in /etc/fstab and If i type create a dir it says permission denied, can anyone help with that?

This isn't the right place to ask questions about SPLs and partitioning cards. However, I'd suggest you look in my sig for info regarding the SPL. Most people that use Partition Magic, Paragon, etc. to partition end up with problems. If you upgrade to Amon_RA's latest Recovery, he's included an automatic partitioning script where you can even select the sizes of the partitions.
As for the files.. You FLASH the zip file via Recovery.

the link you have for Flashing the Haykuro SPL? Follow directions in post #3 HERE. does not work if you try to download the spl. Like I said I have the latest radio so once I do that spl all I will need to do pretty much is install amons latest recovery and have it partition the sd card as well has have a recovery option. Then do a nandroid backup and install the new 1.17.1 of dwangs script and I should be good to go right.

Last question I promise. I got Amon_RA's latest Recovery and I renamed it to recovery.img but when i try to copy it to the data folder on system it gives me a permission denied error. Is there a file browser on the market that will let me copy it over or is their a way to browser the system files thru the pc and copy it that way. Thanks again.. merry xmas

Also if you have 3 skateboard droids in fastboot then you def got root.
Nah I still have the rainbow boot screen. if I update the spl will it give me root again and let me modify the system files
Make sure you updated your radio before you flash your SPL!!!!

How to use FROYO with OLD A2SD Method

Froyo sux....with apps i get all types of complications...ive done everything re-format and used all methods...no A2SD method works including Google's. I want the Old Method on the Ext.....but not even Rodriguez' works...anyone solutions or people suffering? cuz its either i cant put all my apps or they dont install....i even had a 'Contact Storage' problem where it bloated so big...my phone said i had low memory

Anyone has a working solution for FRF50?
how bout you wait till froyo source is out then when can have all kinds of goodies

Try this rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=644438
I'm not sure but I heard that Froyo doesn't like EXT partitions ...
Perhaps the kernel on the upper link should work. Give a try =)
i'm trying it now....let u kno how it works..and thanks for the suggestions
NO LUCK....DOESNT EVEN READ EXT PARTITION...I DUNNO what the hell KING is talking about
I have stock rooted froyo, and the apps that can be pushed to the sd card go to the fat32 part.
I have not tried using a2sd yet.
I will try pushing an app thru adb tonight to sd and see if it installs.
Update: I installed a couple of apps to the sdcard with ADB. One I don't use anymore, and one that I had installed from the market. I had to uninstall Google Earth, but I now have it installed on the sdcard and it is working just as well as if it were on the phone. Also tried Tower Raiders Free, and it also installed to the sdcard and plays with no problems. So I don't know if froyo needs the ext partition or not, but the newest ADB release does not in order for apps to work.
the benefit of EXT is space and i already have so many apps installed already from previous....the new method allows me only half and i would have to re-install all and for some reason...regular froyo doesnt sit well with my phone....like in 'manage application' it just says calculating...and i can never install certain apps
paul's (MoDaCo) r16 + have apps2sd on ext partition as an option.. i've been using it on ext4 since r16 dropped have about 75 apps including google earth and flash and have 135mb left on internal .. advanced task manager says 223mb with 20 apps running
did u have to activate the option? and how?
no .. its automatic... there are 2 ways... google (froyo) crappy apps2sd and our way of doing things.. just have your sd card fat32 /ext2/3/4 and thats it .. disregard the google froyo a2sd
You can try Darktremor A2SD and see if that works.
The rom you are on would need to have some form of a2sd launch command in the init.rc. In the old stuff, it would be a matter of putting the following lines in the init.rc:
1. Look for a line called class_start default. Add the next two lines above the class_start line:
start a2sd
on property:cm.filesystem.ready=1
2. Go to the end of the file and type the following:
service a2sd /system/bin/logwrapper /system/bin/sh /system/bin/a2sd
disabled
oneshot
Now, I'm not sure about Froyo and its Apps2SD...I'm not sure if you need to find the lines in init.rc (assuming they are actually in that file) and comment them out.
But try the program and see if it works.

Anyone tried the above post on froyo?
A link to step by step instructions will be appreciated.
Some steps here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Apps2SD but dont know what else is needed for froyo.
I want this because my /data partition is completely out of space, and no more apps can be moved using the froyo method.
Forcing all apps to install by default on the sd card is buggy at best.
update: works, see the below post, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6952103&postcount=16
Is SWAP partition still necessary ?
I've read that swap is not needed. Works without one for me
@britoso - i see you talk of this file - a2sd-2.7-update3-signed.zip - is that a rom?

just wanted to note that this works fine on Froyo FRF83 too.
I used Paul Obrien's FRF83 rooted, deodexed rom.
1)nandroid+ext
2)flash frf83
3)flash apps2sd
4)reboot
5)bootloop!
to fix it:
Code:
adb remount
adb shell mkdir /system/sd
adb shell
/system/bin/a2sd install
a2sd repair
a2sd check
6)success!
edit: it does not start automatically on reboot, flash leofroyo's boot.img in bootloader mode to fix it
fastboot flash boot leofroyoboot.img

Help: Firefox for android stuck in memory

Tried firefox for android beta2 today and it freezed my phone, so I uninstall it only to realise that it locked 13MB of my internal memory permanently probably due to bad uninstall. Tried to reinstall it so that I can uninstall it again but it didn't allow me to install again saying that I don't have enough memory (though i still have ~45 MB free internal memory).
Anyone knows where does firefox install to? I couldn't find it in any of the app directory (not in data\app or system\app, nothing in dalvik cache and data\data as well). having 14MB memory locked is really a paint considering how small our milestone memory is.
Please help.
Thanks

1.Do you have a recent nandroid backup? that would be a simple fix?
2. What rom and kernel are you using?
3. Is your phone rooted? Probably yes...All the apps go to /system/app, unless you have apps2sd installed
4. If it's not there and it's not in "manage applications" then probably it's a an error of your rom showing erroneous available space.
Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
1) I am using XT720, we don't have nandroid backup tools yet
2) Stock EU rom and kernel for XT720
3) yes, rooted. I am sure it's not in /system/app (mine has got apps2sd)
4) I guess I'll probably need to reflash the rom to get rid of it then. a bit troublesome but no choice I guess.
Something about the firefox is that if you install it you'll find that the space taken up by the firefox is much bigger than the .apk+dalvik cache+data in the normal app installation path. some portion gets installed into somewhere else which nobody knows where. My friend with a Nexus one try to move it to sd but it simply won't move the whole thing because part of it does not install to the /app.
Anyway, thanks for the help. I'll wait another day or two before I flash it to stock again.
Many thanks

Can you go into recovery? ADB commands actually work as root there.
You also said you have app2sd - I'm guessing the ext version. You can browse around the ext partition if you have something that can read it (like Ubuntu) and delete it from the card as well.
- Look into your /cache partition and delete every download*.apk
- Look into /data/app and look if there is still an apk left
- Look into /data/data and see if a Firefox-folder is located there - delete it!
You can do all this with RootExplorer
Then you should be fixed
Milestone isn't supported. I think I read it somewhere on the mozilla site. There's some known issue logged somewhere

Check if there is any "*.tmp" files under /data/app ?
I was locked some memory due to unsuccessful install of "Pocket Legends", and found out that the apks were stored in both "/cache/downloadfile.apk" and "/data/app/vmxyzxyz.tmp".

[Q] What happens to /system when a rom is installed?

I'm sure this question has been answered before, but I can't find it anywhere, so here goes:
I always thought that whenever a ROM is installed it completly wipes and overwrites the /system partition. But perhaps I figure wrong, maybe the files/folders within /system are overwritten and any other pre-existing files are left behind.
Which is it?
I ask this because I notice that the size of /sytem in an update.zip varies from one ROM to another, this suggests to me that perhaps files can be left behind when a ROM is installed. Also I'm curious why it's sometimes possible to upgrade a rom without a wipe and sometimes it isn't.
It depends on how the ROM is set up to install...
Basically, a flashable zip is just a bunch of files and a script that installs the package. If the script also has instructions to erase files or directories, then it will...

it depends on what you are doing. if i flash a full ROM to my phone, it will just upgrade everything as if it were a real OTA from google, meaning it keeps every thing in tact. if i wipe the phone first, of course it re-writes everything. so it's a tough question to answer.
Thanks danger-rat, perfect explanation.
It's quite interesting that we rely on the ROM-dev to wipe whatever is necessary (as a manual wipe from Recovery-mode does not wipe /system). So I guess it's possible to install a new ROM and be left with bits of the old one still in /system if the ROM-dev didn't specifiy a format of /system.

[Q] Firerat's Custom MTD Partitions Question

Sorry if this question has been asked multiple times, I did try my best to find an answer on google and xda but no luck, so here I am
I have it set up and everything. Before i did it, i had 150 mb of total space, now I have 298 mb of total space but i read that people got up to 350+ of mb space, is there a way i can get mine up that high?

It really depends on which Rom you are running. For jaybob's 2.3.7 (TeamHeroc 30Nov) that I am using
I have my mtdpartmap at 105 2. I think this gives me data of 352 total. I have pulled some apk's out though and you will have some market issues unless you use s0be's market fix because the cache is set below 18. This is a gingerbread thing that didn't happen on froyo from what I can remember. You also need to use firerat's 1.5.8 (or above I guess for the 18mb cache to work without the market fix). You can check the size of the partitions by going into the terminal emulator and doing: df -h, of that doesn't work try busybox df -h. That way you can see what you need. If you go over the allotted system partition amount you will run into all kinds of issues. Leave some room if you like to change boot animations or anything else involving the system.

Call me terminal newbie-noob
I'm looking for two things:
1) firerats v.1.5.8
2) easy to follow instructions for installation.
I also want to use firerats (have for a long, long, long time, but, I've been intimidated by the OP disclaimer and super-long thread), but I cannot find v.1.5.8.
I've gone through the links, and I'm just not seeing it.
(Folks, you gotta understand: I'm a fumbler and overcautious, and it's painful to ask for help.)
I love having my little hero rooted. I love the continuing work by AOSP, Dastin and Matt Crystal and innumberable others, it's great! I just don't have enough room for the apps I use. I wouldn't travel down this path if I didn't think I had to, so please lend an old fool your brain.
The best how-to I've come across (so far) is the ROMRepo:
http://romrepo.info/wiki/index.php?title=Firerat's_Custom_MTD_Partitions_(HeroC)
It takes me to v.1.5.6.
I just don't want to screw up.
Thanks in advance.

Am I asking for too much? I don't mean to cause harm. If one would be so kind as to provide a link to v.1.5.8, I'd be grateful.
I know I'm a risky prospect for lending help to, but I won't hold it against anyone if things don't work out right.
Thanks for your consideration.

As far as instructions on how to use the mod just read the op then spend a little time reading the thread. Then make a nandroid and give it a go. Also you should have a copy of your current recovery on hand and adb installed on your pc.
