I got in tho this Android recovery mode <3e> With POWER+VOL DOWN and then pressing the HOME button when the litte driod icon shows up and i see this:
Andriod system recovery (3e)
Reboot system now
Apply sdcard:Update.zip
Wipe data/facory reset
wipe cache partition
I cant press any of the 4 selection and it just says:
.
Formatin Chace...
Formating MISC...
And nothing more i just se the android icon unpacking thing. I have to pull out the battery to be able to turn the phone . What does this menu do? Why cant i press anything?
The phone works with no problem except bad battery. So what is this menu? I want to do a hard reset . I did with VOL+HOME+POWER down but it feels like its not really a hard reset because i can see all my old photos and my phone is still rooted, Isn't a hard reset suppose to wipe the root?
Thanks!
This menu is Android Recovery.
You can install CWM Recovery by Paul which has many options, one of the most important are nandroid backup and flashing custom ROMs.
The stock Recovery doesn't have many options, as you see, this tool is just for basic operations, like making factory reset and flashing signed update zip's.
But why dosent anything happen when i press Wipe data/factory reset?

It will wipe your /data and /cache partitions and will remove installed apps, custom settings, such as Google Account, but won't remove root.
To remove root you need to reflash /system partition with a stock image, such as Paul's NVflash v10B ROM:

I want to do a factory reset but i also want to wipe the cache on the device.
Is it recommended to do it for a factory reset or just when you install a custom rom? I have found these instructions for a custom rom but its not clear to me if i can do it for a factory reset:
Install ROM (Sense UI, Cyanogen, etc)
1. Turn phone off -> Hold Volume Down, hold Power button
2. Press Volume Down to highlight Recovery -> press Power to select Recovery
3. Backup/Restore -> Nand backup
4. Wipe -> Wipe data/factory reset
5. Wipe -> Dalvik Cache

So, if i can do it for a factory reset, when should i do it, before the factory reset or after?
Thanks.
If your goal is to just put it back to factory setting, what's the problem with JUST doing both resets anyway?
I don't understand what those wipes do and if they are necessary when doing a FR. I've heard that it might help to wipe the cache in case i have a problem with the phone. That's why i'm asking.
Cache is cache... stored memory. Its like if you watch porn online, you wanna clear cache to ensure no one accidentally bumps in to your profile.

Ok, i understand i can clear the cache. When should it be done? Before or after a FR?
Ok, someone please help. I bet the majority of you have custom roms and you know for sure how to wipe the cache before installing a custom rom.
Please share this knowledge with me. I'm gonna sell the device if i can't get any help. I'm tired of some issues with it.
I tried to enter the fastboot menu (or whatever is called) by pressing the power button + volume down + trackball but it reboots after the checking for an update.zip file because it fails to see any.
What do i do?

Relax.
Do you have a custom recovery? If not, install one (if you want to install custom ROMs).
If you do, when the phone is powered down, press the power button and the volume down button at the same time. You will arrive at your custom recovery screen. Go to wipe and you will see that you can factory reset, wipe cache, dalvik cache, battery settings and rotate settings. I am under the impression that wipe factory data would wipe everything, including cache etc. In general, if you are switching between versions of a custom ROM, you can get away with wiping cache and dalvik cache without having to do a factory reset. If you are going to a completely new ROM then you should back up all apps with titanium backup, nandroid backup (in custom recovery menu) and then wipe (factory reset) and flash your new ROM.
If you do not have a custom recovery and want to install custom ROMs then use this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611829
Also this link is your friend: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=618768
If you try to explain your situation more clearly, we might be able to provide more direct instructions.
I don't have a custom recovery image and i don't want to install anything else.
I want to know if its possible to wipe cache and dalvik cache on stock rom.

I haven't dealt with stock recovery in a long time, but power down, hold power button and volume down at the same time. You will get to the recovery screen, select factory reset (or data wipe or whatever the option is), reboot and you are good to go. Don't worry about cache or dalvik cache.
I tried that. The only options are Fastboot, Recovery, Clear Storage and simlock.
After i reach the screen i get the "checking sd...no image found " message.
Clear storage has only one option: Delete all user data? yes/no.
If i select recovery it reboots.
Does this mean i cannot access wipe dalvik cache?

Delete all user data then. When do you see " no image found"? If you hit recovery and it sreboot then you need to flash the stock recovery again. Forget about wipe dalvik cache, that is not important if you are just trying to factory reset and may not even be available from a stock recovery (can't remember though).
But that looks like Factory Reset to me. I was looking for a way to clear all possible cache. I've read on some other post that a guy cleared the dalvik cache and it solved some problems with his N1.
I guess i'll chose that one.
Thanks.

I must have been confused by the title of your thread and your first sentence starting with " I want to factory reset ..." Honestly, I don't remember but wiping cache alone may not be possible with a stock recovery. Just factory reset, start over and that's your best bet to clear up any issues.
Hello people!
I have a sony ericsson xperia X8 and i have it rooted.I want to factory reset it and i dont know if it will brake on the starting screen.
I have also a custom ROM on it...More info:
Model number: E15i
Kernel Version:2.6.29.6-nAa-14
ROM Version:FireDroid 2.3.7(2.4)
Bootloader: Unlocked
Both Recovery modes are installed...
So what i wanted to ask is if i will lose root/unlocked bootloader/custom rom if i do a data wipe/factory reset from recovery.Do i have to lock the bootloader, then unroot it to factory reset it and then do everything all over again or just unroot and the unlocked bootloader and kernel will stay the same?
Best regards,
iNoobsTroller
When you Factory Reset/Full Wipe from the recovery you will not lose your root status and your bootloader wont be locked again. But your custom rom will be removed and so you have to flash the rom once more.

If you factory reset your phone, your phone all data including your rom will be removed. But your device will still be Rooted and its Bootloader will remain unlocked. Your kernel too will be there as it is. The only thing thats going to get removed is your Custom Rom(In your case Firedroid). So after Factory Resetting you will get stuck at the kernel logo(nAa 14's logo). But its just the part of the game. This happens because there is no Rom installed in the phone to boot into, so you will have to install your Custom Rom again from the recovery.

Go to the CMW recovery. Here you will find something like 'Full wipe/Factory Reset' select that option. Now you will also find "Clear Cache" in your screen do that too. Then go to 'Advanced" panel in CMW, there you will find 'Wipe Dalvik-Cache" and 'Wipe Battery Stats" and do that options too.
And always remember dont say 'Thanks" just press that button.

Yeah i did. Also there is no FullWipe button...So i did everything all over again to install new rom.Can i delete the files from my sd?i think the rom will create new ones in the following boot.
Of course. You can delete all the files from your SD Card but if you have any apps moved to your SD Card then you will lose them. So just move those apps back to your phone and then wipe the SD Card. Then you can move them back to SD Card again.

u can open the recovey so u dont need to worry
firstly do a complete wipe of all user and system data
if u are on plilz recovery there is a option to do so in the wipe data factory reset option called "clean to install a new rom" do it
thenif u have a official jb 4.1.2 firmware flash it via odin if u want to go back to stock or there are many kk roms and customized 4.1.2 roms available here do a research and flash whatever u like

You currently have the stock recovery, not Philz.
Go into your current recovery and go to factory reset/data wipe (use the volume up and down keys), to select it use the power button. Once you have factory reseted your device, reboot.
If that doesn't fix it then do the following:
Download any recent Philz Kernel for JB from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191
Copy that to your external sd card (go into recovery and connect your Note to your PC or if that doesn't work, do it through a different phone or an microsd card reader). Flash that file in the stock recovery, reboot to recovery again. Once you have philz, perform a full wipe (you should have that option in factory reset/data wipe otherwise wipe /system /preload /data). Once that is done, reflash with Odin and then again: go to the stock recovery and perform a factory reset and reboot, now it should be working.
As the title says I have the problem that I'm stuck in a bootloop. (LG Logo coming up over and over again)
May initial plan was to root the phone (for ClockworkMod, I used AIO-Toolkit), then do a factory reset and then make a backup of the Stock Sytem before attempting to flash the Custom Rom. So there is no Custom Rom on my Phone at the moment. The rooting worked fine and I was able to start it up. Then I turned it off again and entered the Recovery Menu (PWR + Vol -) and selected the option "wipe data/factory reset". Expecting that this would do a factory reset. Then I started it back up and it was stuck in the bootloop. I do have still access to the Recovery Menu. The ClockworkMod is on version 6.0.1.5. I already tried taking out the battery for a few seconds and starting up again and I also tried wiping the Cache and the Delvik Cache and apply the factory reset again. No change.
My Android is still on version 2.3.4 GB. So still the old bootleader as far as I know.
I hope the information I provided were helpfull.
Thanks in advance. I hope you guys can help me.
P.s.: I'm from Germany so my english is far from perfect. I hope it wasn't too bad ^^
FIXED IT!
Flashed a new 2.3.4 V20Q with SmartFlash.
Before that I had a V20R. I am not 100% sure what the difference is but it looks fine.
i tried to install cyanogen mod on it but it didn't work and my phone won't go past the boot screen, i can access the sd card via my card reader but the pc doesnt detect the phone. can get into recovery too but i dont really know what to do from there. i tried using the "update from sd card" to put a stock rom back on but it just says "opening update package...installation aborted"
i followed this as recommended by another redditor http://www.needrom.com/download/cm12-1-working/
Here's the phone specs http://www.devicespecifications.com/en/model/4d963668
the options i have available in recovery are: reboot system now, apply update from adb, apply update from sdcard, apply update from cache, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, back up user data, restore user data, root integrity check, reboot to bootloader, power down and view recovery logs.

Well, in recovery, if you have a "wipe cache partition" option, start with that and see if it reboots. If not, you will have to try the "wipe data/factory reset" option but it will erase all your data. You have to choose a working phone and lost data over a non-working phone and lost data.

Sounds like you might need to flash a boot image for your ROM. Is there a separate boot image (kernel) available to you that will work with your ROM?
Sent from my angler using XDA Labs
i honestly don't know, i'm really new to all this :/
