In my job I have the opportunity to work with a large variety of phones that multiple carriers in the United States sell. One interesting feature I saw was on the Blackberry Curve 8500 series, in which when you plug your phone into a USB device, it automatically goes to an analog clock screen.
I know that in 2.1 ROMs for the Hero, we have a nice program called Desk clock, which shows a digital clock moving to random parts of the screen.
My question is, is there a way to configure Desk Clock so that it automatically turns on when I plug my phone into my computer?
+1. An application like this would be just awesome.
There you go
I built a little something for you.
For now, it is really just a prototype.
If installing works and you open it, it will show nothing. This is not a bug, there is just nothing to show. The service listening for power plugins is running in the background, so just hit home and ignore it.
It will try to launch the android 2.1 clock first and then the HTC one when you connect the power supply.
I'll try to give it some kind of UI later, but for now, I've got a train to catch. Have fun with it.
Thanks a lot, MrMooh! I'll test it once I get back from work and post the results.
It works like a charm. It seems it calls the HTC Clock application, not this dedicated 'Desk Clock' app from 2.1, but it's even better for me. Awesome work, thank you so very much, MrMooh.
EDIT:
Is there a way to make this service run at startup in background?
I'll look into it. I already have an improved version, but it's not what I'd be proud to release. Perhaps at the end of this weekend I will have it finished.
Thanks. I'll be more than happy to do the beta-testing.

I would be interested in this too. Seems like a fine idea. I can beta test if need be.

Alright guys, I quickly made a new version this morning.
It should actually start automatically after booting up and you have a button to manually start and stop the service.
Try it out and tell me the bugs
Works perfectly. If there are any bugs - I can't find them. Thanks, once again.

Mr. Mooh, thank you for this!
Edit: Only thing I'm noticing is I can't change the weather to Fahrenheit, but that's excusable.

samre here works a treat on villain 5.4. brings up the android clock on mine. but i like it! well done you!
or use tasker (tasker.dinglisch.net), there you can choose to start the app you want when usb / dock plugged and 1000 other features (location based, event based a.s.o...)
Its worked im my sapphire 32b with strokes 2.1 rom version 1.4.2. thx man.
Works great, this was one of the few things I missed about my BlackBerry! MyTouch 1.2 running Cyan 5.07 test 2.
Nice app! Is possible to start the real desk clock ( black screen with time in white ) ? The one that starts with the icon with the pc and the clock...
Great!
The app is for comfort! Great! Thanx!
But I have one comment:
It could be super when the screen goes back to main home screen (not deskclock) after unplugging. It`s just a thing of personal comfort, so maybe somebody can support this.
Thanx again!
thank you dev!
this is neat
New version
I just fired up eclipse and added a few lines. Plugging out the cable will now always get you back to the home screen, no matter what application is running, so don't update if you don't like that behavior.
I could theoretically start the "real" desk clock, but I don't really know what intent to start to make it work. If you find it out, tell me and I will add the option.
PS: Tasker looks like a really good app, thanks for showing me.
It doesn't works in 1.5 roms
Howdy folks. First time poster here.
I recently bought a Nook Color that was rooted when I bought it. I believe it was with the auto-nooter 2.12.25, but I'm not sure.
Yesterday I just wiped the device, installed the 1.1 update from B&N and ran the auto-nooter 3.0.0. Everything seemed to go flawlessly.
My question is, how do you customize the softkeys? On the previous version it was set up so that a double-click on the home button brought up the softkeys. I loved that. I've tried doing that on the version I have now, but am unable to. I don't get the softkeys when I double tap the home button (and it's configured to do so in the settings.) and I'm stuck with the little grey button that brings up the softkeys, which I don't like. Any ideas? I thought about downloading another version of softkeys from the market but I don't want to cause any conflicts.
Thanks!
***Update.
Okay, after playing around some I realized the grey button I was referring too was the "popper" and that I could set the transparency of said button to 100% and it would disappear. Great, that solves that issue for me. I'm still having a bit of trouble getting the Nook Color the way I had it on the previous root (which was done by the person I bought it from.) It was a combo of softkeys and launcherpro which I thought worked awesomely. Is there an app other than launcherpro that might work better with the Nook Color?
Thanks again!

Straight from nightlies to RC........ wow
Ok, for those interested, i do not believe this will have the video lag fix.. i do not get how this can be an RC level release....
I just installed it and it seems to work fine, including YouTube. No lag detected, at least on my Nook Color.
Anyone know if the sleep issue has been resolved?
Or if the menu lag/garbage collection issue has been fixed? When I tried it about a week ago certain apps such as Reddit is Fun were basically unusable due to the extreme menu lag.
thank you XDA
You've given me a very nice tablet for cheap.
Glad to donate. This is really fun!
CyanogenMod-7.0.0-RC4 has arrived
CyanogenMod-7.0.0-RC4 has arrived
http://www.cyanogenmod.com/blog/cyanogenmod-7-0-0-rc4-has-arrived
The next round of RCs have arrived. From RC2 until now has mainly been bug fixes and we’re getting near the final state. In this release, there may still be some lingering GPS issues on the Evo and the N1 call audio bug hasn’t been fully fixed. But if you were happy with the previous RCs/Nightlies on your device, there is no reason not to update to this one.
That being said, this is the most stable version of CyanogenMod 7 to date and will probably be the last RC before the final rolls around. The most notable new fixes are on the tablet side of devices. The Nook Color, for example, now has working hardware acceleration. Because of these fixes, many of them are receiving their first RC. There was also a big fix from AOSP for EGL issues, which is why all devices bumped to RC4 from RC3.
Feel free to grab CM7-RC4 (or RC3.14159265358979323846264338327 as we call it internally) from ROM Manager, our forums, or our mirror network if you prefer manual downloads.

Try the new version of Wake Timer in the Market. Works for me on Froyo.
Are there any major issues in RC4 that should make me hesitate to move up from Nookie Froyo to CM7?
Does the internal media partition work properly on this ROM?
Sent from my Nook Color!
Only issue I had was that I had to manually install google apps to get the market working.
Other than that- I miss the Tablet Tweaks.
can i flash this over the 29 nightly with out wiping
Yes.
10char
Nightly over nightly gave me no problems.
You might be fine.
Worst case is that you would have to boot into recovery to re-flash the rom and wipe data and cache, so just make sure to back up your current rom.

The issue was that you couldn't actually sleep the device... death sleep or something in the kernel and the nook color. Basically this means the device was always on and using about 2% of the battery per hour even while "off". That pretty much means it can't go on the wifes NC.
Where do you get Android marketplace apk? I just flashed this and now I don't have a market place. I'm coming from phiremod 5.2.

quick question from someone who's never messed with nightlys before my nook...why would I install this instead of nightly build 32? I'm guessing the RC4 would be just a really good nightly build that they feel is ready for release, yes?
Edit: I just noticed that the RC4 was just posted, so I think what I said is basically right.
Another edit (sorry): also, can someone tell me what clearing the cache does (or doesn't do if you decide not to do it) when you switch or update roms?

The cache consists entirely of files that can be thrown away as they get regenerated by apps as needed. When you upgrade your ROM it's recommended you clear the cache so that the system and its apps don't get confused by cached files that represent scenarios that are not relevant to the ROM you're running.

I would really like to know if this is fixed in the RC release too.
Just flashed it to my NC. I went back to Zeam launcher just becuase it's what I was using on Nookie Froyo and I had all the settings & shortcuts backed up already. I also added Button Savior for those times when the status bar buttons are hidden. I really like the "lens" lock screen as it's much more convenient to swipe down on a 7" screen than across.
So far I haven't run into anything that doesn't work. Titanium Backups of my user apps went in quite happily. My Angry Birds can rest easy, their hard work has not been in vain
The only hitch so far - my Titanium restore of Thumb Keyboard did not work as expected. Under input settings, the checkmark refused to go on. I re-installed from the Market, enabled it successfully, and then restored the data only from Titanium.
The new chat with google without having to wait for 2.3.4. But on the Gtab both screens are turned sideways This is running on Vegan Ginger, someone else test on a different rom and let me know if you have any luck.
face tbe tablet down it will turn normal
Nice find, thanks!
Running VegaN-Tab 5.1.1, works great! Thanks for finding this!!
Maybe just me, but it may have kept the g tab from falling asleep.
I installed and when i log in it goes to a white screen and says contacts at the top of the screen. Im not quite sure what to do from there or if this is an error. Anyone have any input. Im running vegan ginger rc1. Thanks.

You have to have a contact that is available to do video chat in order to see the contact.
Still can't get it to work properly with Vegan Ginger.
I was able to get it to work, although i get the sideways screen issue -- still a better substitute than having nothing...much better quality that the yahoo messenger video chat
Running vegan 7
Working on Calk's ROM
I just got this up and running on my GTab running Calk's 1.1 ROM. The picture quality is very pixellated which I assume is because it hasn't been tablet optimized. I'm really just happy that I can actually use the camera for something, GTalk no less!
Wow, Nice find! installed on my gtab running vegan 5.1, made video calls to both my PC and Evo, worked great!
Justim
Running Vegan Ginger RC1 here. The video is rotated 90 degrees on both my end and the computer feed. If it works on Vegan 5.1, I think that's reason enough to switch back to it. This is the missing killer tablet app as far as I'm concerned.
apk?
I am running stock and do not have access to the market. Can someone post the apk please to see if it works on my stock gtab?

Downgraded to vegan 5.1 and she's running perfectly now. Great find guys!
For some reason, I have about a 5 second audio delay on mine. Running VegaN-Tab 5.1.1, another guy in our office also has a gtab running the same Rom. When we tried VTok on our internal wireless network we got the delay. Haven't tried it on any other system yet.
Anyone else seeing this behavior or have a suggestion for fixing it?
Anyone have this running well on a Gingerbread release?

I wouldn't try to get much of anything to work on a stock G-tab. You need to just go ahead and bite the bullet and install VegaN 5.1 at least. If you stick with the stock ROM you will ALWAYS have problems getting apps that everybody else gets with no problem. If you follow the instructions here at XDA you will get full market access too so there is no downside.
Vtok looks and sounds interesting, but the fact that none of my contacts show up (even though I know they have video set up) tells me that maybe everybody must have Vtok for it to work, like skype, tango, etc. ?

That isn't, or shouldn't be the case. I gave it a spin last night and was able to connect to someone on normal PC Laptop. The person you want to chat with has to be able to use video at that moment or they won't show up in this app. Not intended to be rude, just to give it a little highlight so other's don't miss it and ask the same things later.
I had the same VEGAn Gingerbread issue with the camera rotation, but i've seen that on pretty much every device i've used any video chat on that was geared to be landscape by default.
Video quality was very low, but i'll blame that one a bad internet connection till I have somewhere a little better to test with. Hopefully this is updated to work a little better in the future since it's the most widely usable option outside of Skype(which is still holding onto that video chat function from most of us) or Yahoo(plugin needed for Android), but Yahoo seems to only work for a minute or two before it pretty much destroys the stability of my tablet till I reboot... lol

This is a complete lie!!!
You can install Android Market on a stock firmware, and have access to all of the apps that a custom firmware has access to. Don't give advice if you don't know what you are talking about!
Hello xda,
After a few weeks with my rooted nook touch, I have come to realize how annoying the DRAG TO UNLOCK screen is. Is there any way to skip this and go straight from screensaver to homescreen/book/whatever-you-were-doing? Already scoured the google and this forum and can't find anything.
Thanks in advanced!
yeah, that would be nice if the lockscreen/screensaver could be completely disabled!
I use No Lock by BoD http://www.appbrain.com/app/org.jraf.android.nolock It has a widget for toggling the lockscreen too. I use it on all my android devices that don't have a rom with it built in. I wasn't sure if it would work with the nook touch but it works like a charm. I'd be nice to have a custom rom for the touch that has it built in. Maybe if cm7 gets running on it.

Thank you!
The problem of this utility is that it's always running as service and take some resources.
If I kill it from services keylock starting to work.
Think must be another ways - smth like disable lock in sys settings via adb.
If you're rooted with nook manager just use the nook touch mod manager and under the configure mod option you can disable the drag to unlock and also have a customized banner with your name and number below.

I know this is an old thread, and the Nook Touch Mod Manager fix DOES work if you have it installed, but as someone who just recently re-enabled the two part unlock, let me just mention that it is actually a useful feature. I don't know how many times I have pulled my Nook out to a random page, or random menu selection because the button got bumped whole it was in my pocket. Luckily, no random changes happened that were irreversible. It would really have sucked if I had managed to out it in black text on a black background, for example, and knowing my luck, it's amazing that I didn't.
So that's my two cents' worth. You can disable it, but it is actually quite useful, and speaking from experience, I recommend against doing it.
