[Q] Camera blurry after 2.2 ROM (serendipity 6.3) - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

HI All,
I realize there are some other threads on this topic but not for captivate running 2.2...
I just installed the new Serendipity rom (6.3) which i'm pretty sure uses the 'hacked stock camera' with power button mod.
Unfortunately, the camera images are all noticeably blurry! no matter how still i hold it. Also, the exposure is often way off.
The old camera app from 2.1 worked great. Really nice sharp, good exposure.
What happened to the 2.2 camera, and is it possible to fix, or revert back to 2.1 camera app??
I'm a bit new to this so sorry if noob question. I did check the other threads and nothing was similar/answered.
Thanks in advance.

Having the sane problem myself. Almost as if the camera is only taking 2 or even 3MP quality shots.

are you guys tapping on the screen to focus the picture? and wipe the lens on the back?

yes.
yes, i've carefully wiped screen and focused as precisely as possible.

Download SGS Tools,v4.7.3 its the one you need. Under upgrade stock apps, select GizmoDroids camera. See if that helps out any.

thanks for this info!
I installed the GizmoDroids camera and it seems like a slight improvement. it also seems much faster to load. have yet to test the video. Still, some bothersome issues with the GD camera app... the exposure compensation is 'greyed out'? Here's a big problem: the sharpness and contrast settings don't 'stick'. They are reset every time app is run. This is huge problem to me because i find that +1 contrast and sharpness really improves image, but i cant have to set it every time i run the app...
also, i've tried out camera360 and it looks much better too. i'm wondering if the blurriness in the stock camera has to do with the autofocus being 'off', or the compression method has changed.

Is this a problem with Serendipity only, or have you experienced out with other roms?

I noticed this too; but the image quality is fine when transferred to another device such as a computer...

You guys might want to post this in the Serendipity Q&A mikey and chance are usually pretty quick to reply, maybe you should try and re-flash
I have been on Serendipity since 5.8 and have not had any issues with the camera or anything else- ROM runs perfectly for me of course as with most things on the captivate may just be device specific.... But a re-flash has helped others with issues so it might be worth a try
BTW I have not installed any camera apps either and camera is fine

My camera works great!!

Slow Camera, Ugly Pictures

I kept reading about people who are complaining about the bad quality with the camera so I just want to tell you guys... just don't take 2D pictures with the stock camera.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1262720
I created a thread which had a few camera apps I recommend for the Optimus 3D. For those who don't want to click the link, the one I recommend the most is Camera360. Absolutely beautiful pictures. Faster than stock too.
Are the photos really that bad using the Stock camera app? I wonder how that's even possible, coming from SGS II. Getting the phone on Tuesday latest Wednesday.

well, I've read a lot of posts on these forums that talks about the bad quality images from the stock camera and also how long it takes to load up and take pictures.
Personal experience is... stock camera takes a while to load up. I'm unsure why its like that. However its only like a sec or two longer than most camera apps so its perfectly fine. Taking pictures is fine, I find the speed normal, however the image quality is what I'm unhappy about. Mostly, its because of the colors. Looks very watered down. Also, you couldn't see details as well as with some other pictures I've taken with other phones. Was a bit embarassed to take pictures with the stock camera, but that did change after I downloaded some new camera apps.
Maybe its just personal preference since quality is only as good as how you feel, but since I did see quite a lot of posts talking about the phone having a bad camera, I've decided to recommend a good one to maybe help get rid of some complaints.
For those who haven't tried it yet, try out some of the camera apps I've recommended, they're all free so giving it a try isn't a bad thing.
I've noticed that taking pictures inside a dim room using the flash is where the camera is bad. In well lite areas the pictures are nice. Especially outside.

[Q] Camera... TW.. A whole lotta curiosity going on here

Didnt know if i should have made seperate threads for each question... Here goes:
Camera
-+---+----+
- is this same camera as SG2? Seems better
- i noticed the galaxy nexus' camera takes multiple single shots at a very high succession rate.. is that contributed because of diff cameras or ice cream sammich's awesomeness?
- i also notice that when im taking photos, it looks amazing right before the shot..(veeeeery sharp) but right after i take the shot, the photo loses its ultra sharpness.
- i also notice this happening on all of my previous android phones
- is this a samsung/android camera app thing? are there better camera app alternatives?
TouchWiz
-+---+----+
- I know theres themes and all that funk for other launchers.. but any way to modify/theme TW? .. I love TW and wouldnt really change anything other than theme it.

Can only answer that the lost focus in taking pictures may be due to shaky hands, focusing mechanism becomes confused as a result..there is a setting which allows for shake reduction; try it, see any differences?
Everytime I see a camera question/comment I am always curious about the issue. Someone always suggests a fix like the one below, whether it's use or settings.
I'm not blaming the respondents, but people need to understand that there is a problem with SOME Notes concerning autofocus. I keep coming back here to try to find a possible software solution, but it's very possible one of the camera vendors simply supplying Note cameras with bonky autofocus in the hardware.
I appreciate the fact that MOST Notes appear to have wonderful cameras, so to those of you, please be aware there is no simple solution to fixing the camera problem that SOME of us are experiencing.
Note (ha!) also that this extends to the Galaxy SII. There are a couple threads in their forum discussing similar camera issues, even though the two phones have different camera modules, and lack of progress getting Samsung to even acknowledge there could be a problem.

anti-shake won't work if you set some parameters especially the ISO value manually! reason: anti-shake does nothing more then trying to reduce the "shutter time", for that higher sensitivity is needed. therefore, if the cam is not being able to use a higher ISO setting anti-shake wont be available!

[Q]about camera and lag

i got my note last week and have playing with it and loved it...i previously have s2 but since i saw note in the mall...i have fallen in love with it
but somethings bothering me..
before i take a pic ...it was clear perhaps hd but after taking the picture and
i look the the gallery ... the pictue look maybe a little dark...or dim
maybe a setting will fix this ?
and lag in waking up? about 2-3 ?
thx for the help pips
I think this is the nature of this camera. When we try shoot a pic the visual which we see in display is before image processing after click image sensor do some modification to the image and it delivers to gallery. So probably this is not a defect or problem... its designed like that..and i don't think samsung phones are known for good quality shooter. No offense.
are you using the stock camera? i have noticed that other camera apps works much better compared to the stock one, my favorite is camera zoom fx, paid app though, for me it gives better pictures compared to the stock one. there are plenty of good free ones out there too. have a look around the play store =]
It's a brightness difference. When you load the stock camera the phone brightness goes really high (you can even make it brighter by switching outdoor visibility on). After taking a picture and going to gallery, you're screen goes back to original brightness that's why it looks dim/blurred but it's not.

You are right.. Stock camera app is little bad.. Evn though if we are using another good app finally lens and image sensor matters.. I don't think samy is using better lens than Carl zies or something. I would say samy and HTC are little poor compared to nokia's and son's lens (of thinking they both use same lenses). This is upto my knowledge.. Correct me if am wrong.

[Q] Panoramic Camera App

Hi, I don't often take panoramic pictures... but recently I've been using panaroid android rom and the stock camera is not as good as i would think especially comparing to what samsung stock has.
So I was wondering what do people recommendo for panorama pictures. Take in noticed i've tried photaf, panorama camera 360, procapture, and a whole bunch...
If you guys know if there is one that like the samsung stock app automatically takes the pictures and calibrate them you know it shows the green mark... since all of the rest although are really good taking the pic is kinda hard for me since I suffer from early parkinsons... and since the holidays are coming i know im going to take a lot of panorama shots.
Any help would be appreciated.

Improve Camera quality?

So there are a lot of XDA Delevopers who tried to improve the camera quality of their phones ( f. e. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1855818)
Can anybody improve our camera? Unfortunately I have to rework all my pictures, because the most of them are quite yellowish. I know there are more important things to do here, but maybe somebody has an idea or one of the others developers can help?
Thanks and greetz from Germany, Munich

Would be great if someone improve Camera HAL... Be able to select Iso, Macro or Auto-Focus...
Try this

I usually use this app:
Camera Zoom FX
Just tried vignette, and am kinda disappointed by UI, and quality also is not so much superior to the stock camera. In fact, I have some problems with focusing. There is only a tinny little bit of improvement, which does not push me to use this cam. Threw $2,5 in a bin...
Sorry for that.
Have you tried the code mod?

Can't you request the money back within 3 days if the app didn't work as expected?
patoberly: Don´t know man. I´m new to this, didn´t found any "refund" hints, and it will be three days tomorrow, so I won´t be in time with solving this. Found something, but it sais only refund up to 15 minutes after downloading. It´s more than one day today.
Sui77: You don´t have to sorry. It was my choice. I don´t have my phone rooted, and I don´t want to mess it again (even if I know programming). I´m tired of factory reset everytime some bad setting or badd app installed make problems. Did one reset today, SIM and WIFI loosing connection. After reset and installing just wanted apps everything is OK again. Am tired of this s.... Need clean fast, non problematic system. Have it today, won´t mess it anymore.
Ah sorry I was wrong with the 3 days. It's just 15 minutes, check: https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/134336?hl=en

Yeah it used to be a decent time frame to try apps, then they shortened it to less time than it takes to install additional files for some bigger apps... basically a useless refund option now.
camera fv-5 gives pretty decent results compared to stock

I find using HDR on the stock camera has been the best. Even in low light it seems to do better than the flash. If there are any compatible ports I think the newer Lenovo Snap It camera app is the best I've used for a while
