I am fairly new to this and there are alot of custom roms out there. I used ODIN to update to eclair to Froyo JK3. I see alot of custom roms out there for JPU and JP8 but I dont see any for JK3.
Are there any good custom roms for us Canadians with Froyo ?
I have enough knowledge to be dangerous but only know what I have read on this forum. if I want to do something to the phone I read and read and read some more then try the task. However on this topic I am coming up blank. Any help would be appreciated.
Thx
My buddy just got a captivate from AT&T, I want to help him get 2.2. I have played with several 2.2 roms but I need advice for him? He wants flash so I want to help him out. He is not worried about bleeding edge or speed.
What would be the most stable 2.2 rom I should put on a nontechie's captivate?
Thanks
Prepare to be scolded for posting in the wrong section
Before you think about roms make sure your friend knows how to recovery from issues
There are several stable 2.2 roms to choose from and which is best is a matter of opinion, and comfort

I'm assuming you're too lazy to read through every single post, so I'll redirect to another site where you won't have to read through so much techno-jargon.
If you're not on the bleeding edge, then please do your research here: http://www.samsungcaptivateforum.com/custom-roms/ and look especially at the custom rom review, as people have clearly laid out the pros and cons of each ROM, and then come here to pick your ROM.

Cezar's JPY if you want stock with some decent addon options
DesignGears's Perception 10 if you want everything to "just work" and smoothly
Darkyy's 7.8 (or 8.0 once that's ported) if you want a themed version of JPY
now: wrong section, /thread
I'm sure some people won't be too happy about this thread
Most of the JPX/JPY-based ROMs are fast and stable. I haven't tried many of them, but I find Darky's to be the fastest and most flash-looking, whereas I found Cezar's to have the best battery life. Also, after installing a ROM, you may want to experiment with different kernels for different performance, tweaks, and battery life. Once you choose and install a ROM, most people here will be happy to help you work out any issues you might have.
Also, take note that if the Captivate is batch 1008 through 1010 (you can look under the battery to find the batch number), you will NOT be able to Odin one-click or revert to JF6 stock using any method, and you'll be limited to only installing JH3-based or later ROMs once you've installed a 2.2 or 2.2.1 or later ROM.

I know that there is going to be hell for this thread, but I will give you my 2 cents.
Check this ROM out:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=890429
It is by far the best and most stable i have used to date.
quickly before I'm flamed for posting......my thoughts on everyone's complaint about posts being in the wrong place.....if you don't want n00bs posting in the developement section, then you need to remove the stuff they want. Post up comparison threads and "it's live" threads somewhere else. leave this place for developers. Make it so noone but developers have any idea what is going on. As long as this board is the place to come to for ROMs, you will continue to see posts like this. Or in a perfect world everyone would just flat out ignore any post in the wrong place.
I am now prepared for my whippin'......

Been there, mate. If you're comfortable with flashing via Odin, replace the stock kernel with one of these. I'm currently using hardcore's SpeedMod with very good results. Next, consider replacing your current modem package with one of these (not sure about their respective band support, so please tread carefully!).
Lastly, try some power saving apps, my recommendation would be CF's "Super Power" available from the market. Good luck!
PS: Some more advice to be found here.

Can somebody help me better understand the JPA, JPY, JP6, JH2, and all the other ones I've been seeing? Are they revisions of the phone, cross compatible at all? Any help would be great
Cheers,
Greg
In essence they are releases of the Samsung firmware by Samsung .
www.samfirmware.com for data order and country specifics .
jpy before jpx etc

Oh alright, thanks.
Is it included with custom ROMs or are they separate from that?
A custom rom will generally use the latest stable rom .
JPY last one with some developers moving to XWJS3 .
Good guides here .

Cross compatibility is one thing you need to check for different continent zones /phones

So if I'm on Froyo 2.2, can I also select between JYP, JS3, etc? Or are they part of that ROM?
They are both later versions and are 2.2.1

Ok so im keen on flashing this Darky's ROM because of its proposed battery life and speed compared to stock firmwares. I was wondering if people could give me links or advice as to what else I would need to flash at the same time so that I have optimum coverage for my provider (Optus- Australia). I'm on a stock Optus 2.1 eclair ROM.
Thanks!
Please, do some research instead of just asking questions. We're trying to prevent spamming of the same questions over and over. Look in the developers page, there's plenty of information there: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=665
I had done some research and had not found any solution specific to my carrier (Optus) apart from installing a Optus Modem. Could you tell me how I would install a Optus Modem?
because of its proposed battery life and speed compared to stock firmwares.
??????????????????????????????????????????
You would need to ask the developer of that rom what you need or read post in the OZ post .
Thats as well as reading Darky FAQs etc.
Better still i can point you to Opus modem in rom kitchin .
Build your own rom .

you dont need to flash an optus modem, however,it is highly recommended that you upgrade to 2.2 through kies or otherwise. other than that, you will need to be rooted with clock work mod. after that , just drag and drop the rom zip in to your phone, download the configuration app from the market and flash from there.
Whenever I flash a new darky version I normally flash his odin ressirection edition then use cwm to flash latest version hope that helps
