Which Gingerbread ROM is the best? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The title pretty much says it all. Which of the available Gingerbread ROM's is the best?
Or should I go back to Froyo and wait till Samsung releases the stable version of Gingerbread?

I'd personally just use a late froyo for now. Gingerbread for me hasn't had any real advantages honestly (and my phone kept crashing at the beginning when using navigation, but stopped now, and it crashed once when enabling wifi).

I am also staying with 2.2.1 until sources and a final version of 2.3.3 are released so that the geniuses here can do proper lag fixing and strap on the bells and whistles we have come to expect.
However, if you are into running the bleeding edge and don't mind a little less speed and few bugs or feature gaps compared with 2.2.1 roms, I would imagine all the Gingerbread ROMS are about the same with a few advantages and disadvantages to each. I know Simone101 does good work so you could maybe try his Simply Ginger ROM or take the stock rom from Doc's Kitchen for a spin.

Wait its still far to early for development on 2.3 to be at a full finished stage .
jje

I was using stock JV1, stock JVK, ultibread, darkys 2.3.3 RC3. I am very satisfied with gingerbread especially with browser speed

I have tried several of them. They have all advantages and disadvantages. Personally I prefer Darkyys ROM, but I cannot tell you an "objective" reason.

I have gone back to Froyo Stock (JS8) and will wait for an official Gingerbread (or a custom ROM based on official sources.)
P.S.: At least for today

Ok I am on Ultimates v8.2 atm. I might change to Simple Galaxy Gingerbread RC 2. I was on RC1 and it was laggy and had a lot of mistakes.
So I am probably staying til lthey release the official Gingerbred ROM

Stock GB had a battery problem so i flashed honey GB but i did not like it.
Then i flashed Tiramisu EVO EXTRA 3.1. İt was fine. But when i saw CriskeloRom_GINGERBREAD_v25 is ready i flashed this rom. İt has everything i have.

Why not try flashing with insanity? It's given my phone a whole new lease of life!

I found the latest darkys to be very quick and smooth. no 2.3 has bln so if you want that you will have to wait. I also had terrible battery on darkys 2.3 rom but others using the same rom have said they get improved battery so I would give it a try and see how it is for you.

Hi Karim!
Install the stock jvk and after that a deodexed stock rom from Ramad along with Chainfire work you'll be happy...but!...it depends on your needs...would you want to take a little advance by looking into system(little differences in it),or maybe begin to create a custom with the deodexed rom base and it worth it.
If that's not the case, you can wait, nothing hurries.

I'm running MIUI RC3c and it has the BLN built in. Works fine here, and the base is 2.3.3.

All gingerbread roms are highly alpha| beta, my advise is to stay away from them, and wait for the official release (couple of days/weeks)

I would agree...I am sure the current Gingerbread based ROMs are great, but they are based on leaked versions of beta ROMs. Unless you really know what you are doing or love the risks of the bleeding edge, I would stay away from them.
All signs are pointing to official Gingerbread firmware for the i9000 hitting Europe in the next two weeks. Once that is freely available, I figure the devs here will have fresh ROMS based on Samsung tested, properly released code out within hours/days...not so long to wait.
Check this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011901
I just flashed this rom few days back and it's working like......knife goes on butter...
benefits:
1. It's 2.3.3
2. very smooth UI
3. longer battery life & lots more
Gingerbread launcher is not there but I installed one from market (check the one from Eugene373)....all together it's cool & I did not face any issues yet!!!
Flashed my few days old Froyo 2.2 with the 2.3.3 rom. So far, everything work without any problem.
Since there is now stable releases of gingerbread, are there any custom roms for it? i cant find any :/
Are there any kernels for gingerbread also?
You can try ColdMod Rom... its beautiful with TW 4.0 which works nicely with good battery life... i have no complains abt it and im using 2.1 improvent of ColdMod

dont know yet
I switched from Darky RC 5.3 to Juwes 4.2 cause Darky is little bit unstable for now. Juwe seems pretty fast and compatible.
I was using darky rom so far but now i want to try something new (darky is still on 2.3.3 which has the battery bug so i use 9.5).
So what 2.3.4 rom do you recommend? It doesnt have to be "blazing fast" , good battery life will suffice
Thank you.
How about Stock Gingerbread Roms?
Is there any rom stable and without bugs?
I use stock JVQ downloaded from samfirmwares with SpeedMod t23 and the auto brightness fix. All partitions converted to ext4 (/system too).
It is really responsive, no lags at all and I didnt find any bug (except the auto brightness but like I said there is a fix).
I also use tegrak to overclock it to 1.2 Ghz but thats optional, it is already really fast !!
confuse every rom has characteristic

Is it worth updating from 2.2.1

Hi,I have a never odin updated phone aand am trying to decided if it is worth updating to 2.3.3. Currently my bluetooth works with in car but can't control it from the cars remote and I guess that I am hoping that 2.3.3 will fix it. Or am I better to flash to a newer 2.2.1 firmware?

Many people may say yes....But to tell u the truth....I ve tried many from stock....to customised roms for foryo, GB....etc....What i ve found out that stock roms are less problematic with zero errors etc....but in custom roms u may get into one or other problem due to heavy optimisations to code....
Between GB & froyo there is no difference in feel & any big new feature. All features are hidden i.e for developers only (at least in JVK build for Galaxy S). U may think afterwards that what was all that fuss about GB when the end user cannot make out any big difference. Since all the Key fetures like SIP, NFC & TW4 are not for Galaxy S at the moment....due to hardware or sammy don't want to do it coz of Galaxy S2.
no in my opinion
At least for the current beta GB relaase XXJVK i think it's not worth to upgrade from a froyo-2.2.1
I am waiting until roms are produced based on the official release of gingerbread. For now 2.2.1 suits me just fine.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
have to admit just done it and all i can say is wow!
i was using 2.2.1 with speedmod and the colour and sharpness is great. however now that im using 2.3.3 jvk the screen just looks different! well, i switched over just for the tv off animation which all my iphone frens find it so cool!
i think it worth it. i had 2.2.1 costumed rom and he was realy nice. but this one, the JVK stock rom is the fastest, smoothest rom i had.
and dont be affraid of ODIN, it's not biteing

I would wait for a couple of weeks.Samsung has said that the official GB will released mid-April.
i´m on ultimate 8.2 for more than a week now and i´m really happy with it. bluetooth works with my parrot now about 95%. and i have to say my phone has to re-connect 30 times a day. all i do is turn off wlan+3g and i also turn off bluetooth in longer workbreaks, because if bluetooth is on for hours than it crashes.
i will not change to ginger until an official version will be released, because ultimate is the best rom i could get for my sgs.
Maybe wait for more stable version of custom rom.

i tried both, JV1 and JVK, but in my opition a custom froyo is still better.
bluetooth did not work better in ginger also.
Wait for an official Gingerbread release. You will be better off installing a custom ROM based on the latest 2.2.1 release until then.

i was always unlucky with ultimate roms, but i've been on SIMPLY GALAXY, its brilliant. i would recommend INSANITY as well
for me if i will be ready for gb, i will go for MIUI or CM7, however, im still a chicken to do it
simply is quite ok. good speed, but i have huge battery drain with this rom.
i never tried insanity. looking foreward for a test.
wait official release of gingerbread then update on some of custom roms

What's the most stable ROM at moment?

I been on simply honey gingerbread since August, but after a few Weeks it starts to give force closes, becomes slow and battery calibration every 2/3 days. After every few Weeks when this happens I just reflash the ROM and it works well again until the cycle starts again.
anyway i'm fed up of doing that now, not much of a flasher either anymore like I was when darky and doc were around. So I just want a long time stable ROM, but there's so many I've from never heard of. So need help from you guys please.
P.s ROM developers, please start collaborating with each other to create quality ROMs rather than go for quantity of mediocre ROMs.

tornado ROM really fast and stable +
Damiangto kernel
Or
Cyanogenmod
Most people just go with some stock/custom samsung rom with a custom kernel. Samsung based roms aren't all that much different from each other, some tweaks, removal/add of programs, different theme and that's pretty much it. In the end i always ended up finding something i didn't like and up to this day i haven't seen anyone correcting the charging bug on samsung's roms.
No offense meant to any developer out there, of course, but i've tried loads of roms and this is my experience of it.
This kind of changed after trying cyanogenmod 7 stable. It isn't based on samsung's roms. And i know this statement is, by now, a cliche around here but this is, by far,the fastest and most stable rom i've tried up to this day and is what i recommend from personal experience.
Just a note to however follows this route. There are nightlies being released after the stable version and i've seen people recommending them instead of the stable because they were release after the stable and are just added stuff. The way i see it, if they're adding new stuff, it may break previous stable work. Well, this is your call, they are called nightlies for a reason, not stable.
Up to you though, i've seem some posts saying they had all sorts of trouble with CM7. I reckon either they were unlucky, tried an unstable version or just didn't follow instructions properly and ended up quitting.
It seems that GingerReal v1.3 for Galaxy Ace is more stable as what I have experienced.
sO Go GingerReal YoU RocK Dude!!!
jetpack checkout totallydubbed facebook wall 19hrs on with gameplaygood batterylife very stable but thats just my opinion

[Q] What are the advantages of Gingerbread over Froyo?

I know this sounds like a stupid question, but bear with me.
When I started flashing custom ROMs, GB was already out, so I never got to try out Froyo. I know the whole deal of "it's newer, they worked out some bugs and it's better". but i want to know:
1) Would I miss anything specially important if I "downgraded" to Froyo?
2) could anyone tell me a few 9000 and 897 based roms that i could try? (I'm not asking "which is best")
3) are there any advantages of running Froyo over GB?
I'm used to flashing and if i decide to give Froyo a try, i would like to flash a few before i settle into any ROM. Thanks.

Froyo its more stable. Gingerbread is faster and has more features.
A froyo rom to try would be firefly or andromeda.
Gingerbread would be saurom. Kk4 or the jvz

I have tried numerous GB roms (Fusion, Pinnacle, Illuminance, Fasty, Serendipity, Apex, Darky, Serenity, MaxQ...the list goes on), but I am looking for the ultimate stable ROM, and wanted to try some froyo roms. Thanks for the suggestions.
Edit: When you say that GB is "faster" are you talking about Quadrant or overall usage experience?

Quadrant means nothing, on any phone -_- so don't start talk about Quadrant. It is faster and looks more polished(GB that is)!
I know Quadrant means nothing, it's just that some people still put some weight on it when determining how fast a ROM behaves. I should have know Sepherian was not talking about Quadrant scores because I seen how involved he is in the Dev sub-forum.
Anyhow, I'm gonna give Andromeda a try, just to satisfy my curiosity. I wanted to try Firefly, but all the download links seem to be dead. Thanks for replying.

I have to argue that after all of this time of being released GB is as stable as froyo (depends on the rom). Look at my sig, I recommend that rom. If you don't like mosaic, look on the i9000 android development forum. There are a bunch of roms there.
I highly suggest using GB over Froyo. GB is faster, has more features, far more development (Froyo is dead development wise), and much more options. Froyo has absolutely no advantages over GB that I can think of
^^Yeah.... i hear mosaic is decent
On a serious note, its all subjective...
If you want to try firefly though...there is a working link in the last 2 or so pages in the thread if you wanna give that a go.

JFYI...I had been trying several different ROMS, and found myself constantly updating. Got tired of it. I posted to ask about a 'stable' rom, and got most feedback that Andromeda 3 was the way to go.
That has been months ago, maybe over a year. I installed that and have been good to go. Haven't reloaded since.
I have had some problems with lockups, and slow running lately. Was considering reloading Andromeda. But I am thinking my problem is with two things: on the lockup, a specific app (Blue Tooth app for external GPS...although it had been working for a long time); and I abuse the phone with just too many apps installed.
I can't compare to the latest GB ROMS, as I've been on this for so long.
For me (on Rogers stock ROMS) I found that GB looked nicer than Froyo, was less laggy and gave me superior battery life.
Someone earlier mentioned that Froyo was more stable but for me the only difference was the occasional sleep death on GB (never happened on Froyo).

Best STOCK like rom?

I've went back to latest official ROM, 2.3.3 JVH NEE, released in Sweden by Samsung because I got tired to always hunt for the perfekt kernel and the perfect ROM.
Now I know why I started looking for other ROM's.. It's lags when playing musik via Spotify while you surf the net, slow over all respons in UI, I know it's slow due to RFS and I've converted to EXT4, but I'm not fully satisfied.
I want a as near STOCK ROM att possible and stable as original (Yes, the latest Swedish ROM, 2.3.3 JVH, is the most stable ROM I've used and got the best battery time, even tho it's slow.).
Does you know of any ROM that meet these requirements? I would like to not feel the difference if I rebooted my phone yesterday or two weeks ago.

I would recommend you to try SAUROM JVU ROM. It's almost close to stock with huge loads of modifications integrated.
Yes, I would also go for SAUROM if it comes for a close to stock GB ROM. One of the benefits it has over many other Samsung-based ROMs is the integration of JKAY Mod that allows you to customize status bar buttons and power menu. Plus in the newest version it has some handy quick link buttons in the notification drawer.
Thank you guys, I'll take a look at Saurom.
___SAUROM___
I've also tried so many diff ROMs.
All I really wanted is nice working stock ROM.
Tried so many. Did not try SAUROM, cause this is a new one, but tried many SAUROM like. I mean ROMS, that claim that they are just like the stock, but better.
CM was fine, but it was also very complicated. And had some bugs.
Really stupid. I could not sync with google e.g.
Finally I ended up with MIUI. Surprisingly for myself.
Clean, nice, fast, easy swype customization and install.
Here are some screens:

MIUI+Go launcher
It works fast, no lags, no freezes, nothing bad.
GSM works fine, GPS is super fast and accurate, battery is OK.
Finally I don't need to tweak my phone any more.

MIUI & Cyanogen are the real custom ROMS. All the rest are stock-based with tweaks and customization. Saurom is highly customizable compared to the other stock based. But if this doesn't matter to you, you can try Darky's latest ROM from his website. I currently use MIUI Rom, you can try the MINTBerry edition (Which I use ), available on the forum. And I would go for Saurom regarding stock based. Good Luck.

Nightly build still updated, real AOSP, less lag than stock, massive possibilities for customizations.
I've had JVH for some time, later JVU, now latest CM7.2 RC0 with CM7 kernel.
Changed to JVO modem (siky_dude has links to many flashable modems) to fix Hello-Hello-Bug. Better than JVK modem.
T9 dialer, better UI translation than JVU even for Norwegian, native keyboard support nor. + swe. + +
Don't flash each nightly (stress battery time?) but check changelog for interesting fixes. Most of the fixes are not even notable in every day use. Flashing new nightly WILL keep ALL settings, market apps, sms, data... Just clear cache/dalvik/prior flashing, fix permission post flashing.
BTW: ALL ROMs have some lag

I've been using the MIUI mintberry for a few weeks and it's so frickin' amazing. First impression was "oh this is beautiful" then i noticed it was fast. Few days passed and the battery life seemed great. I did some benchmarks and surprised by the results.
I would highly recommend for you to try that one!
