[Q] Quite the serious issue I'm having.. - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay so earlier today, my captivate's power button randomly stopped working. It automatically turns on, suggesting there is something causing the button to be always applied, but i have the phone apart right now and it isn't the button itself causing that. I have no idea what could be wrong,

Are you able to do any voltage testing from the button to the board?

I have no tools at my disposal, so no.

Not sure if you can find a key test app or secret code? I know cwm recovery has a key test in it. But I'm not sure how you will get into it if your power button doesn't work

I can get into recovery, but can't click anything without the power button. Shortly I'm gonna try and flash back to the original CM7 kernal via odin and if not then i'll flash back to stock. more than likely it's hardware, but there's some optimism in me. if it is hardware, hopefully samsung will replace my phone...

Hey I was actually suffering from the same problem you are with the lock button. It just up and gave up on me one day, didn't even drop it or anything. The only way to wake up the screen was to plug in the charger, or if I took out the battery and put it back in, it would start up automatically. I managed to flash back to stock despite this, because I thought it might have been a software problem since I was running a custom rom. This turned out to not be true, however, as the power button still did not work after I had flashed back to stock. The problem is indeed a hardware one, and the way I fixed it was by taking apart the phone and playing around with the actually button on the inside, wiggling it a little bit and pulling on it to make sure it wasn't stuck. After I did this, it worked. I put my phone back together, and I am glad to say I once again have a fully functional captivate. Hope this helps.

bricked captivate

need alt ways to get into recovery other than adb and holding down the volume keys.
i bricked my captivate using the odin one click recovery going from the i900 rom to stock. odin had froze and i restarted trying again only to see the phone and computer screen.
sorry a bit frustrated ....ask all the questions u need
Here's what got me out of a jam...

1) Remove the battery
2) Remove the SIM
3) Reinsert the battery
4) Run ODIN (Note: I am using Windows 7 Professional x64 so I ran ODIN in Administrator mode by right-clicking on the file in Explorer and choosing the 'Run As Administrator' option. I would suggest doing this to make sure you have no permissions issues with the program.)
5) Depress both the up and down volume buttons on the phone at the same time
6) While you are depressing both the up and down volume buttons, plug in the USB cable.
No need to depress the power button or do anything else. The phone should go right into Download mode with the little yellow construction guy.
Then ODIN will see the COM port you are connecting with and you can just click Start.

I'm not so sure that it's not brickable, I'm pretty sure I bricked mine...
I was trying to load the international galaxy s 2.2 rom using odin 3 and for some reason I got stuck in recovery mode and could do nothing (this was after it finished loading the rom). I couldn't make it go to the download mode. Anything I did just took me right back to recovery.
I'd really love to know what you guys would have done, I'm new to android the captivate is my first.
Thanks in advance for your input.
By the way, I was talking it through with a buddy and we came up with a possible cause. I was rooted when I tried loading the 2.2 rom. Would that have bricked it?

Yes, the buttons are different if you attempted to flash a Galaxy S rom, the typical button hold will not work.

Hey guys, if you are stuck on that phone+!+computer screen, do this to get into download mode!!
1. Take out your sim card, sd card, battery and open Odin3(you must open odin3 before you start or it won't flash. Do NOT put your sim or sd card back in).
2. Put the battery in.
3. Plug in USB. (the phone will power on to that screen)
4. Hold down both Volume keys, and then push power. Hold it and dont let go.
5. Wait for it to go black and return to that horrible screen.
6. When it goes black the 2nd time release power and keep holding the voldown and volup.
note: THE STUPID SCREEN IS NOW FIXED!!

that is EXACTLY what got my phone out of the certain brick situation i thought i was in this morning. i had been trying for hours, every combination imagineable from the vibrant/galaxy s forums. odin3 had shut down on me twice mid process so everything was SEVERELY screwed. i did that combination and the very first time it caught and installed now my phone works perfect. ended up sending designgears a donation based on that post alone. thanks dude!

I did have my phone plugged into power when I was trying the button push combos.
I didn't, however, try holding down just the volume button so I can't know for sure if that could have worked.
Since I was within the 30 day window I just took it back to at&t and they gave me a new one. I'm too chicken to try loading the 2.2 rom again. I really want to, but I can't afford a $500 brick...

AT&T replaced it without question? Interesting...
Edit: Well, now that I think about it, the guy that sold me mine was pretty clueless about it. I had to show him how to remove the battery cover, despite the printed "ILLUSTRATED" instructions stuck to the cover.
There's going to be a lot of refurbished captivates hitting the market soon.

So I can't get any button combo to work, and all I get is White AT&T screen (if unplugged) and a frozen loading screen(if plugged into usb). Any ideas?
I think I have the same problem.
Used Odin one click to flash stock rom and then tried to flash JH7, but had some troubles with odin when trying flashing... tried to reboot the phone by pulling out the battery and now I can't turn it on, just have an image on the screen: Phone has troubles with connecting to PC and that's it...
oh yeah, that helped me:
1. Remove battery & usb
2. Open odin.
3. Plug in usb.
4. Hold vol down.
5. Put battery in.

Bricked captivate
ok so i was running a devil kernel on jellybean 4.2 and for some strange reason the rom started acting funny and gave me a message saying i had to type in a password ti decrpyt storage even though i have no passwords on my samsung I897. So i decided to flash back to stock and start all over again from scratch using odin one click but in the middle of downloading my phone was disconnected and it gave me the bricked screen shortly after. Now i am unable to do anything on this phone ive tried pushing the volume buttons and taking the battery and sim card out while running odin 3 again trying to force it back into download but so far no progress has been made. If any one can help me it is much apprecitated.

HELP!!!! very fustrating. BRICKED possibly

Okay long story short. I flashed to phoenix rom from cognition 2.2 rom with cwm. Now i can't even odin back to 2.1. Every time i insert the battery the phone turns on itself. Please help me I have tried to go to download mode , recovery mode. it just sits at the at&t screeen
anyone help please!!
Hi Matt. I'm pretty sure you're not bricked, but you are at a point that might give you a little difficulty getting into download mode. Try the following:
Download Mode
You don't need to be at a "phone> ! <computer" screen to do this either, though you might need to try it a few times.
If you have the Android SDK installed you can type:
adb reboot download
To have it switch to download mode. If you don't have the Android SDK installed you can search the forums for directions or I'll post back later with how to install it.
Another option, of course, would be to create a jig or buying one pre-made. I don't believe you're at this point yet.
If those methods don't work...
Pull your Sim Card, Battery, and any External SDCard
Turn on Odin
Plug your Phone back into the USB Cable (battery out still)
While holding down the Volume +/- Button - put your battery back in.
It should go into DOWNLOAD MODE.
If you get the Gray Battery Charge screen - it didnt work. Rinse and Repeat until it goes into the DOWNLOAD MODE. Might take a few tries.

I watched your video - thanks for posting it
Ok - I have never seen that happen before. But... unfortunately I think your phone truly is bricked.
I mean it looks like it isn't getting past the "boot loader" (sorry not a dev so the technical term might be a little different.) to even allow you to get to a recovery mode.
So unless MikeyMike or some other dev has some way for you to re-write the sbl.bin file to allow your phone to boot - it's pooched

so not even a jig would fix this?!!
Doesn't appear so - It won't get past the AT&T screen... does your computer even recognize the phone when it's plugged in?
I don't think it is booting up enough for you to get to the recovery menus... so sounds like the sbl.bin is corrupted - which unfort is a true brick.
But you could try the Jig as it is pretty inexpensive. Post here to let us know if it worked or not.

the usb doesn't read the phone when it is plugged in. It says unable to read, malfunction. but it does charge. weird thing is it still say its charging when i pull the usb out
lol thats just a residual electricity in the phone that is still being discharged after you unplug it... kinda like static electricity and a light bulb.
But.. I would still try the jig as a last ditch effort - it is possible that it would work...
This is why we flash to stock and THEN flash custom roms, kids

The four touch button lights won't go off when phone is turned off!

They just won't. They'll work normally when on and they'll go off after so much time of idling, but when I turn off the phone it buzzes like a complete shutdown and they just won't go off. I think it started when I loaded that leaked 2.3.3 captivate rom from SamFirmware and now it continues after a 2.1 stock downgrade and updating to 2.2 via Kies. I can't find anyone else with this problem.
hmm That's weird... if you pull the battery and replace it do they come back on?
Oh yea, I've been playing around with it and everything to see what I can do. It started happening about the same time my power/sleep button started messing up. It still is messed up, but I don't see how one would effect the other. Like I said, they work normally until I try to turn it off. Then, they don't go off until I pull the battery or boot it back up.

if they dont go off when you turn it off until you pull the battery, it might be safe to assume your phone isnt actually off. Try reflashing whatever ROM you have going on within your cappy.

It has happened on two different ROMs. The 2.3.3 leak and then again when I flashed back to stock 2.1 and even after I updated to 2.2 via Kies mini.
maybe try calling samsung then. They may be able to address the issue. My friend has a vibrant that he bricked, hard bricked and they fixed it for free so, they might be able to help you out. it might be a hardware issue they can help you out with.

[Q] Did I Brick my Wife's CDMA Hero? SPL Danger Gone Wrong?

Hello All, I hope this is posted in the right place....
I believe I have bricked my Wife's CDMA Hero...
It was rooted with S=Off and working. I was flashing roms and all was well until... Danger-SPL... I know, I know, I shouldn't have done it, but I did!
So, this is what happened.
I flashed the Danger-SPL via clockwork recovery and when I did the screen went to an install screen for a split second and then blank. I waited for a while and tried to reboot, but nothing.
The phone will not come on at all, screen stays blank.
When plugged in I get the charging Orange LED. When I try to power up, regular, recovery, bootloader, etc. the LED goes away, but screen is still blank. The battery does warm up after awhile with the phone "on" so it seems to be drawing juice from the batt.
Volume Down + Power Yields nothing
Volume Up + Power Gives me 3 Vibrates
Menu + Power Gives me 5 Vibrates and Blinking Green LED
everything else doesn't seem to do anything, the screen is ALWAYS blank!
Cannot see the device via adb from my mac... (Not very well versed in adb, but have used it a little with success in the past on my EVO)
Is there any hope? I have googled till my ears bled (not really but heads my been pounding after awhile!)
Have I truly bricked the phone? Is there anything that can be done WITHOUT the use of JTAG (Still researching that to see if I can do something)
Any help is appreciated... any bashing if fine too, you can't bash me more than the Wife!!!
Thanks in advance!!
im not sure if the computer wont even recognize it or get to fastboot.
but your led does come on so there may be some hope on most hardbricks the led wont even come on.
Have you tried Volume down + Power + Action (trackball depressed)?
No, actually went to sprint today and had them check it out. They couldnt fix it, but I was able to get a replacement for $35 dollars.
I didnt have insurance or anything either and I told them what I did...they didnt hassle me at all amd just hooked me up with a refurb that was in way better condition!
I was shocked that it was so easy!
Thanks for your reply though!

[Q] Newbie boot loop problem?

Hi everyone, I'm sure this question has been answered before but being a complete noob, I honestly don't understand ANY of the technical terms such as "rooting", "flashing", "ROMS", etc etc. So most of the answers I have read make zero sense to me.
My phone started bootlooping when it was in my bag and I have no idea why it started doing so. The battery ended up draining enough to get it out of the bootloop and it was working fine for a day or so, until I put it back in my bag to go out and when I took it out, it was bootlooping again.
What I am trying to ask is what might be the cause of this and is there anyone who can explain how to fix this issue (in simple terms) so that I'd understand?
Cheers.
mine is doing same!

Well I don't know what rooting or mods are, so I doubt it is anything like that. The only things I've really done with my phone are install apps from the play store, torrent music using utorrent and save images/pictures. I thought that maybe it was due to my phone overheating in my bag as it has been rather hot the past few days. Could that be a possible reason?

since it seems you haven't done anything to your phone (ie unlocking, custom ROMs, etc), this could likely be a hardware problem.
how's the power button working? damaged?
you can also do a factory reset in bootloader, power off your phone, then hold VOLDOWN, press POWER, keep holding VOLDOWN until the bootloader appears (the white screen, with a few options), you use VOLUP and VOLDOWN to move the "cursor" and POWER to select the option you want.

if it's rebooting in bootloader, then it's very likely the power button that's the problem, for example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2563572

hardware problems are very hard to fix; and i'm not saying it's the power button for sure, it's just highly likely it is, if it's rebooting bootloader.

The problem with my phone is that I found it. Turned it in and no one claimed it for a substantial amount of time so I gained ownership of it. I don't have the warranty or anything that came with the phone except for the phone itself and the charger. If I took it to a phone repair shop would they possibly be able to fix it? Or am I screwed...
Okay so I let my phone run out of battery over night and just plugged it in to charge then and it's seemed to have gotten out of the bootloop and it working normally now, so would this still possibly be a hardware issue? And is there anything I can do to prevent it from bootlooping again?

Okay so I let my phone run out of battery over night and just plugged it in to charge then and it's seemed to have gotten out of the bootloop and it working normally now, so would this still possibly be a hardware issue? And is there anything I can do to prevent it from bootlooping again?

Im not sure this is hardware related, there are a few things you can try though to prevent this from happening again. first off, if you ever do encounter another bootloop... pressing and holding in the power button for around 20 seconds or so forces a reboot, the capacitive button on the bottom will start to blink. Second would be to boot into thee bootloader by powering down the phone, holding the volume down button and powering back on while holding voldown. this will bring you to a menu described above eariler, then do a factory reset.
