quick flashing question... - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

first off, im sorry if this is common knowledge but after looking for a few i decided to ask. I recently flashed cognition 4.3 to my cappy and love it so far. I'm wanting to flash a few more ROMs after flashing my first rom of course.
My question is, do i need to restore to 2.1 via ODIN before I flash each ROM?
Also, I've seen it said that some ROMs can't be flashed the same as others. I used the method shown in this thread here :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364. Can anyone compile a list of ROMs that will flash via that method or something I just need to look out for before flashing a ROM?
I already have titanium backup pro so if i make a complete back up before I reflash, i can simply run the restore from there and my phone will essentially be right where i left it?
ok, that was more than one question....sorry if i didn't search hard enough for the answers

Why why why. Do ppl post questions in dev section.? This is not development related. I do suggest to flash stock first. Unless told not to by the dev. It helps keep it a clean flash.

You should really look harder if you have decided to dive into android development and flashing. You dont have to flash to stock everytime, and many people do it differently. Some of what you wrote shows you need a little more reading. Mods will move this, let the flaming begin.

i know its mostly opinion but what ROMs do you guys recommend? I've been looking at Paragon, Phoenix, Seredipity and a few others

soooooooorrry. I actually thought i was in a different section. had multiple windows open

[Q] Flashing my new phone

So I just got my replacement phone, and it came stock with the kb1 froyo build. My previous captivates all came with 2.1, various builds, and was able to flash roms easily.
My question is this...is there anything I need to be aware of that's different when flashing with a kb1 build phone? I just don't want to mess anything up and void my warranty for good.
Also, I did a little bit of searching, but does anybody know of a thread with how to flash back to the stock kb1 build in case I need to return my phone again for some reason? If so, a link would be greatly appreciated.
I know these are probably stupid questions, but if you guys can provide some insight without flaming, that would be great.

Does nobody know this? I'm really itching to flash a custom rom, it's been too long since my last one.

Search is your friend. There must be a dozen threads on this. Best bet is to Odin back to stock 2.1 and proceed from there. 2.2 has a different recovery scheme that makes it a little more complicated. Read the sticky in Dev on how to flash a custom ROM.

Oh boy.... Another one of these threads.
Short answer.... PICK one, they are all better than stock. There are so many roms out there that only YOU can judge what you want and need in a rom.
Everyone will have a different answer for you. For instance I say Firefly, but only because it works for me
You can't go wrong choosing any of them.

Anything other than JI6, that leaky rom is junk.
Caution swyping! Read at your own risk.

That is unanswerable every single phone is different, and people have widely different tastes. The trick is finding a rom that works best FOR YOU.

LMAO........
The suggestions are to try them out yourself........
They are all better than stock........
You have to figure it out for yourself..........
And he meant that every Captivate is different.......If you did some more reading...you would know what he meant........
The "all in one place" is the first 3 pages of the dev section........http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=706 any thread that starts with [ROM] is what your looking at
if you want a fast rom i would recommend the cyanogen mod 7.
people talk about how its unstable and has bad battery life
but its all wrong,,,
from my experience cm7 has been a stable like all the other roms but just faster..
It's the fastest you'll ever get right now and it has all different customization you can do.
so try it out.
Might want to try cm6 its outdated but fast and more reliable

ya, any file i put on the root of the phone gives me the same answer, whether its cwm or update.zip
You have 3E recovery.
The easiest way to get around it is to Flash the .tar version of speedmod with the full version of odin.
This only works on 2.2 If you need any more help. I will be around for a bit.

good answer! but if you are on 2.1 you can put the new rom on the sd card first and then flash speedmod. it wont boot into the rom but will give you recovery to flash the new rom.
yes, no need to root just odin flash speedmod then flash a rom.
if you want complete and reliable and well polished then flash andromeda, it's a bit older version of 2.2 but the work was great.
if you want super fast flash something that says js8, i hear the paragon rom has a great kernel. id say cm7 but maybe you should work up to that, it isn't hard but you need odin to flash back if you have problems, there aren't any 2.2 kernels or roms with the proper update script and binary to be flashed from the recovery that cm7 uses.

Nice. That makes sense that it will work.
OCLF (one click lagfix) use ext2. Titanium or some system app remover app to get rid of bloat and you should be good to go. At the end of the day different ROMs and such are for asthetics... no one has over 340 mg of Ram available so performance not much different from one to the next once lagfix installed. Until you OC/UV and that is tuff to maintain stability with.
Now we all know that there are no "Best Rom" threads but sense this one has changed course ill leave it open.
Each rom runs differently for each person. This is due to the many different ways we each use our phones. Once you get the hang of it, try out a few and find your favorite. Good luck on your quest.

Questions pertaining to specific roms should be asked in their thread. Most times you're not the only one that's had that problem and it's already been addressed. That translates into search and read.

Flashing a gingerbread ROM?

Hi, I've had my vibrant for quite a while it's been rooted ever since day 1. However I just got got Clockwork Mod working on stock 2.2 KA6. I'm now ready to flash a 2.3or 2.3.4 ROM and I wanted to know how do I go about it. I not sure if I can just flash over the stock 2.2 or not. I also hope I wouldn't have to resort to ODIN, as every one of my last several experiences with it was not good at all. Someone please help me out!
Read the first post of the rom you want to flash. This should answer your questions. You do not need to odin before flashing any gb roms that I am aware of. Just remember you can't go back to froyo without doing odin. (also this belongs in q&a or general). Good luck!

yes u can go from froyo to gb. maybe all of the gb roms that are around explicitly say that u can and how to. it is easy, there are youtube videos on how to do it. About odin, I try to use it every time I change rom, it has never given me any trouble or problem, you just gotta have the right files.
maybe this post should go on another forum though..
only a year old and already so grown up...my my how the time has flown by in the vibrant section. no flaming or "WRONG SECTION" comments...nice work guys
they grow up so fast :'-)

[Q] NooB Question

Firstly I apologize as I have found this being asked before, but not in these circumstances. I am new to android being a long time iphone user. I now have a N7000 that I used PC Odin to flash LPY. I have noticed all of the concerns over bricking and with my lack of knowledge I am thinking I should flash a custom rom to avoid these issues.
My question is which is a good rom to go with, ICS (Such as kingdroid 2.0 or something GB?) More accurately what is the best process? I am currently not rooted. I am ignorant to android and I have noticed a steep learning curve making the transition. I explain this to help understand why I am asking this question.
I have attempted to search, and I have browsed Dr. Ketan's thread, and I still cant find a good answer. I just don't want to have a bricked phone trying to get to a custom rom. Any help or suggestions is highly appreciated.
Should I root it first then use CWM to switch to another rom?
What custom roms are recommended for easy use out of the box?
Another quite simple question is if I saved all of my contacts to google are they currently synced, as in if I switch to another rom they will still be accessible?

What I would do if I were in your place: I'd revert to rooted GB like this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25285584&postcount=3
then I'd flash one of the CM9-based Roms, because they are the only truly safe ICS Roms ATM, and these are
1. official CM9
2. Asylum
3. Paranoid
4. MIUI
5. KANG
Also, your contacts are safe with Google, and you can restore them in no time at all.

Thanks for your response, when you say revert to a rooted GB is that the process through PC odin? Also does it need to be one of the safe roms? It seems the problem stems from a wiping command?
Hello!
Yes , use pc odin to revert back to gb, i did so, i used an prerooted stock gb .
Then follow chasmodos guides to go to ics again.
One more thing, to back up my apps so they are there on the new rom do I have to be rooted?

yes !! to use app like Titanium Backup !
or since you probably downloaded all apps from Google Play Market
then when u install your new firmware/rom you can simply download all of them from google play(but u lose the data of those apps )

[Q] help recompiling a stock based LT30p rom for use on LT30at.

I've been eyeing some of these stock based roms on the development threads and have had success flashing them. My issues are actually with the firmwares, in that I cannot retain mine. Beautiful roms and I love them, but lack of wifi and blue tooth and gps are a bit much for me to use them as daily drivers.
Which brings me to my question(s). I'd like to compile a rom based off stock jellybean (from my phone ie; with the correct firmware) but use the appearance and functionality of any stock based rom I've had success flashing already.
I've got a decent understanding of rooting, flashing, and recovery. I'd just like someone to either point me in the right direction of my goal or someone willing to take time and guide me (roughly, I don't believe much hand holding would be required, but then again I should be able to figure it out if that was the case).
In any case, I'm willing to provide any information I've neglected to give here and I'm willing to discuss anything related. And my apologies for this being my first post. I should have been posting for ages, but never got around to it when I had my Atrix 4G. Hopefully I'll be contributing in some threads once I learn my way around this system.

You need the first hit in this Google search in order to create your own stock based Rom

All you need to know is in that thread

Thanks for that. That's the first part of the answer I'm looking for and the one I was already working on. The second part is how do I use parts from another rom. Moreover the more important part of my question.
Sent from my LT30at using xda premium
You ask permission from whoever developed it, then put it in your working folder when you use the kitchen
