i was mislead so im gonna go back and double check at BB to see if what i remember is right or my mind played a trick on me
share your experiances you have had
I rooted mine two hours after buying it, and it's slowly replacing my laptop for web surfing, last.FM, etc
I've wiped mine a few times due to issues i've created tinkering with it....but I love it just the same
Sent from my Nook Color using Tapatalk
As soon as I can get RDP or VNC to work it will replace my laptop when I'm on the move. It is very capable for a tablet.
i just wish it had 3g not every place has free wifi
I used mine about 2 hours total to make sure it was working, then I updated it to 1.0.1, Auto-Nooted it, and have been installing apps and playing with it since. Not a single problem so far except for one which hopefully will get resolved sometime.. I really love my Delicious Bookmarks app, but it requires going into the Accounts and Settings and adding an account, can't do that right now.
I haven't tried the B&N Store or Lend Me since rooting, per http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=873975 <--this thread
Otherwise zero problems, it's working great. I'm using FBReader to read my epubs like I always have. The Softkeys are slightly quirky but I'm getting used to them... and like seems to be totally normal on dual-storage devices, some apps aren't looking in the place I'd expect them to, such as WallSwitch (automatically switch wallpapers) is looking in /system/media and not /sdcard or such like I'd expect it to.. I might wind up pushing my pictures there /system has 160M free, no biggie
EDIT: After running the built-in B&N Gallery app, it seems like it spawned a media search and WallSwitch now shows my Backgrounds folder. Yay.
I have had a very good experience with mine so far- problems, glitches, I have minorly screwed it up a few times.
So far I have not screwed it up totally but I will feel much better when we have a full Recovery.
What I like:
The hardware itself, quality and capability seems quite good. Screen is excellent, especially for such a cheap device. WiFi works well- better signal strength than some expensive laptops I have used.
The mod community for rooting and doing so much excellent work already, and hopefully even greater things to come.
What I don't like:
The crippled version of 2.1 B&N has installed.
The lack of GPS and Bluetooth
the lack of portrait mode in B&Ns included software (eReader and many other sections.)
I knew there were many limitations for the stock NC when I ordered mine so I really am not complaining. I don't even mind the lack of cell service since it is pretty easy to connect to an adhoc wifi tether.
The only reason I considered an NC is because they had been rooted a few days before I ordered.
The whole experience is very familiar to me- I first got a Moto Droid shortly after they were first rooted and spent quite a while happily trying many things - and using recovery often.
It is my fervent hope that the devs are as successful with the NC as they were with the original Droid.
Even as the NC is as I type this it is a very good value and tablet.
If we are lucky, it will be a great one soon.
I bought mine solely for the purpose of reading with the added bonus of web surfing and the occasional movie while on the go. I got mine in November before the root and didn't realize there wasn't flash support until I got it home and started playing, went to youtube and got the crummy "mobile" version where the video looked horrible and audio was out of sync. I stumbled across XDA while looking for some kind of a flash hack and rooted after a week of debating whether I should. I'm glad I did.
Thanks to the root, the NC has gone from mundane to a very worth-while device. I love all the stuff I can do thanks to the app support. The youtube app and Dolphin HD alone make it worth rooting.
I was saying in another thread that I had gotten the NC primarily as a reading device, I love periodicals and the NC is pretty good for those. I was on the fence about getting it for a while, the fact that it could be rooted sealed the deal.
I wound up having to exchange my first NC (thankfully the factory reset went very smoothly) due to serious screen flicker issues when the device was set at a mid-level brightness. My second one is much better, though I can still detect a tiny bit of visual flicker under certain lighting conditions.. not a deal-breaker tho.
Couple issues that I've come across :
1. I screwed up the driver install on my PC the first time I tried it, didn't have the INI file in the right place and couldn't side-load anything on to my NC or access it as a storage device. Totally my fault for botching that one. Second try worked fine.
2. My YouTube app no longer launches, it just flicks on for a sec and goes back to the desktop. Probably need to re-install it.
3. Some memory issues when using ACV (comic viewer) to view CBR files. Frequent issues loading pages from the archive files. No issues at all if I extract the images to folders first and load that way, though so it's all good for my comic reading
4. Some apps that I wanted to download like SwitchPro Widgets don't show up in the market for me. Have to side-load them (which stinks since I paid for it and won't be able to get updates directly from the market).
I haven't had the stones to attempt installing the new market app. The old one works well and I'm not a big risk-taker Other than that, the NC is the little tablet that could! It's a fantastic way to get an Android tablet and very capable e-reading device for an extremely reasonable price.
We have 2 of these at home. It has already replaced my laptop at home, Using it mainly for web surfing and reading. I don't mind too much that it does not have 3g since I use my phone to tether when I am on the go. The screen size is just perfect. I just can't see myself trying to carry around anything larger, I love the portability of this thing. I don't know what Steve Jobs meant by saying that people don't want 7" tablets
The rooting process was simple enough and the only problems I had was youtube not working. I did a command in adb that was posted in another thread for the fix. I don't know about the problems with the lend me feature since I have not tried.
I went to my local best buy and barnes and noble yesterday and they are all sold out of the nook color. The nook color seems successful only being launched a month ago, I would not hesitate in getting one. I am very pleased also with the support that it is getting here on XDA.
My wife's NC is still stock but after I showed her what it can do rooted she is thinking about it. It was her idea in the first place to get these things. I was really looking to get a Galaxy Tab but the NC has satisfied my needs @ only $250. I guess I will spend the money I saved on a new Android phone after CES

What he meant was that he doesn't want to sell one, therefore nobody should use them.
And remember, you are talking about the guy who tells people how they are supposed to hold their phones.
I bought one last night fort my wife.rooted it right away and toyed around with for a little bit before bed..
What directory do downloaded files from the internet go to? my evo downloads go to a download folder on sd card but I couldnt find it on the NC. Bash me if you must but give me an answer. TIA
I picked mine up on Black Friday. Had to do some sweet talking... the ones in the store were spoken for already. Well, needless to say I got it, and it's saved my shoulders. Using my 15.6 inch laptop during the 40 min train commute was nice and all but hauling it from car to train, train to office and vice versa wasn't exactly ideal. I'm not a small guy or anything, but HP sure doesn't make things light
So far my NC has been a very worthy companion. It's gotten plenty of looks, comments, oooohhhhs and aaaahhhhhs after I show them Angry Birds and other things. I tether it to my TP2 and I've got internet. I use it in the coffee shops, during lunch to read, at home for a quick browse, at work as a file transfer medium, all in all it has become an indispensable companion. And that's even without BT and Flash. It would be nice if it had a GPS but quite irrelevant really... my TP2 covers that function very nicely. Nedless to say I'm extremely happy with it. One of the best purchases I ever made!
It's great and very encouraging to read all these positive comments about the NC. I have been lurking here since soon after the NC came out and was very happy to hear when it got rooted.
So far I have only played with a stock version in BB, but I'm about 99% sure there is one wrapped and already under the xmas free for me. Thx wifey! Can't wait to officially join the NC group on Xmas day.

Its a sweet device that will only get better form here on out. Once bluetooth, nav, and a nice EQ music app (like powerAmp) are up and running, this device can become a phone companion (for roaming wifi), nettop replacement, and even a capable a carputer - nav, OBD2 reader/code clear app, and audio source (bt calls and music).

How will peripherals be connected? Does the hardware support USB to go, or do you think there is a BT chip onboard but inactive? Because that would be sweet!

To be fair, the BT **SHOULD** be there, based on the listed specs, but custom hardware for things like this is not uncommon, so i won't dream about BT until we really get it.

I predict that in 2011 Jobs will announce a new breakthrough in Apple engineering, and will release a 7" tablet. At that time he will also rename the two tablets; MINiPAD and MAXiPAD... I'm just sayin'...
Oh you mean the nanopad... I have that already trademarked... Jobs, we know you're lurkin.. Call me up to negotiate leasing rights.
On that note B&N should let XDA release NC2... Nothing but free droid books loaded upon purchase.
Picked mine up last night and the root process went very well. Couldn't be easier -- thanks to all the hard work by the guys here and at NookDev.
I picked up a Galaxy Tab but returned it before I opened it. I just couldn't justify $600 for that device so, while the Tab has a few more features (2.2, GPS, etc.) this is an awesome little tablet for the money.
Couldn't be happier.
I'm just venting, but I've spent more than my fair share of time screwing with this thing, and in spite of having to play with cooked software, it's great - with two exceptions! This thing would be perfect it had: gps, mic, and bluetooth!
Okay forget the gps but the Mic and Bluetooth would have rocked! Okay, just the mic....man this thing is driving me so crazy! I can't use Skype! I just wish the executives at Barnes and Noble would have been a little more considerate of my needs when they built this thing!!!
I know what you do you want for $250....simple a mic!!! I would have paid $260!!
Merry Christmas!
Heh I agree that the lack of a microphone is troublesome.
I got the nook for the sole purpose to root and tinker with.
I knew what I bought, but still the lack of a mic is the one thing that is nagging me. But to use the nook as an XBMC remote is awesome, so I take comfort in that

Instead of venting, why don't you donate to the NC teardown fund? Once a NC has been taken apart piece by piece, we may reveal the ability to activate bluetooth.
Wonder if there's some way to write drivers to share my Android phone's mic/camera with the NC over wifi. I know there's a GPS over Bluetooth driver. Conceptually it should be possible to access devices over Wifi, just a matter of someone writing the software.
i am falling in love with nook color and would buy it right know if it had 3g (gsm) module.
Do you guys think it is possible to have 3g in next version of nook color? i found on net that the chip the nook is running on is capable of 3g module (i think its the same chip the ipad is using), so i am wondering...or if the chip is capable of 3g, i read the donation and teardown forum, will it be possible to have it on this device?
sorry if off topic.. i am new to this forums thanks

There is a pretty thin line between unlocking functionality and stealing. Even if 3G could be unlocked, you'd need credentials from a carrier to use it. None of the carriers are going to allow you to register a hacked device on their network so the only way to get actual 3g would be to steal it...
Even if you happen to have a data plan from the correct company (Verizon, Id guess) you could use to login, carriers charge per device with access. Tethering is sort of a moral grey area, but I don't think this would be... it'd be stealing 3g from Verizon (or whoever).

i see...i was more towards the option of BN making version of nook color with 3g, cause i can see what u ment with just allowing 3g.
thanks for reply, i will wait a bit maybe to see how things evolve...

Careful with the wording... since at this point even Occip would not claim full success... he has verified that it is connected to power and the CPU.
(of course logic leads us to the conclusion that bluetooth will work since the hardware hurdles have been leapt)

The 2.2 in January came from a retracted story at various sites - it was confirmed to be wrong several times on the forum here. B&N said 2.2 next year sometime...they're still pretty vague about it.
For what it is worth (should be as good as a my brother's girlfriend's mother's cousin's friend) - it was posted on the facebook/NookInColor group from BN. It should be somewhat reliable....

I wouldn't count on anything for the NC. I wish, I rooted mine, but returned...
Calvin,
A couple of thoughts here:
1) The developer program where you've landed here is precisely to support the folks who are building such apps to enhance the user experience on the device
2) There are no plans to just throw open the doors on the device. Don't hold your breath for open access to the Android Market on the device...
Thanks for your interest.

Will the NC ever be able to utilize a "word" type program to write, cut, and paste. This is such a great device and for BN to not forward this device to it's potential capability would be economically stupid. You open this device up it'll blow the ipad to the back shelf.
I have a NC and have till the end of Jan. to return...for me, if there seems to be no forward movement to 2.2 or other apps. I will return mine.
Hopefully you have the same thoughts from NC lovers, BTW it is a GREAT reading device...time to take it to another level!

Hi All,
With all the amazing progress with Bluetooth in CM7, I'm left with one question: is increasing the Bluetooth range on the Nook Color a possibility using nothing but software?
I've got a Motorola S305 and A2DP stereo media is spotty at best. It has occurred to me, given my limited knowledge, that this is likely to be a hardware issue (there's been some previous discussion over the length of the antenna available on the chip) rather than something which can be solved in software.
Does anyone with more knowledge than me have a feel for whether or not a software solution to increasing Bluetooth range might be likely? If so, I'll be waiting patiently, but if not, I'm going to head out and pick up a set of headphones.
Finally, just want to say thanks to all the devs for their amazing work. The Nook Color is the best tablet on the market, but that's only because of you all.
Thank you.
Tying the antenna into the headphone jack would have made sense -- that's how many portable FM radio "walkmen" were designed.
Has the idea been floated that the reason Barnes & Noble left off the Bluetooth feature was exactly because the hardware in the end proved incapable?
The Range issue is most likely a Software issue, the Bluetooth Radio is using the same Antenna as the Wifi, so there is not a problem there. Give the devs time and they will figure it out.
Also i don't see how the Hardware would be incapable. this device is based of a referance design from TI themselves the only reason there is even Bluetooth in the device is because its so tightly integrated you would have to replaced the whole WIFI chip itself. everything in the Nook was designed to go together by TI.
The hardware is not the issue on this its software.

why exactly Barnes & Noble did not include Bluetooth is a real mystery to me. I can only assume they didn't want to deal with the headache of helping customers troubleshoot BT connectivity issues with a million different headsets keyboards and gaming controllers. Limit the ability of users to add third party hardware and you reduce your support calls. (btw howthe f%$£€k do you type a comma with the thumb keyboard!?)

Remember that B&N was designing and marketing a color E-Reader - not a tablet. The fact that the NC can perform as a pretty good tablet is a result of folks like us messing with them -- and B&N may be taking notice of the fact.
I suspect it's more likely that B&N simply spec'd wifi, and the actual Nook designers used a readily available wifi chip that just happened to also have BT (as a lot do)...
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
I read somewhere during the early days of NC hacking that bluetooth is probably there because the common chip WITH bluetooth was cheaper than the special one without it.
As for boosting through software- I have no idea.
Antenna "boosting" ideas I have seen include internal soldering (not worth it to me at this point) and software changes.
I have no clue what might be possible.
But I think it should be easy to toss a headphone cable in and see if it does anything to the range.
Mine seems to have about 2 to 3 foot range.

If one was to be on the stock B&N rom and is to use it as primarily a book reader, the comma is rarely used.
You can always download a different keyboard, there are tons available (SwiftKey, KeyPurr, Swype, Stock 2.3 Gingerbread, etc).
Anyways, the bluetooth chip is the same as the Droid 2/Droid X, right? The bluetooth range on the X is great, so eventually this software-limitation should be gone.

well depending on exactly how you are going to use it. if its a point A to point B type of trip that is within the same day(unless you leave the xoom on and the nav app open the whole time) then using the nav app that comes already installed will work fine. as long as you have an intrernet connection at the start to set down the points youre fine. it already automatically downloads the whole route and map and lets say you take a detour, the nav will reroute without any need of internet. but once you reach your destination, youll need an internet connection to set down a new destination. and if you set down the layers at the begining so it tells you where all the gas stations are and all that, there is no real reason to go and buy a new nav app.
i use the stock maps and nav apps that come with it all the time and my xoom is a wifi only and i take it on loooong trips and ive never gotten lost, even when ive taken huge detours off the intended path. so i recomend you use the stock nav app since it already has offline nav built into it.

I agree, learn to use maps and nav. It might take a few minutes, but then you've learned a valuable skill and saved money.

whats so awesome about co pilot? for a 9.99 app or 24.99 for premium it better get me to where i'm going. and reviews on marketplace don't tout it as awesome. unless only people who are complainers are only ones reviewing the app.

By far the only and best offline navi for android. If tom tom ever comes out for android id be on top of that. Second. Who says you have to pay for apps.
Look on the market for an app called Locus.

I use copilot live 8.2.0.368 and it works great. I've used it since my HTC G1. Those market reviews must be from those who lack common sense.
The topic of offline navigation has been discussed before. However with the Nexus 7 and JB, what offline app provides the quickest, accurate, and full featured navigation?
-Copilot
-Sygic
-Navfree
-Other????
I'm trying to decide which one to spend my money on only ONCE. I know google maps has offline cache, but there's still no searching for POI and naviagation.
I like Sygic. Navfree i could never get it to search without having some form of data. Navigon is supposed to be good too.
Navigon works great for me

The built in navigation works great! I used it a couple times this weekend to test it out.
Sygic
I use Sygic myself! I love it! It's great because when you purchase a map pack like North America for example you can download by state so you can save space and download only the places you need! Plus you can import POIs from various websites which is nice! Also the voice nav doesn't sound robotic, I have mine set to British English and it sounds like a real person!

I cannot get Navigon to load on my Nexus 7. The PS claimed it is not compatible with device. What gives?

Google Maps w/offline data cached for areas your in. you can get a hell of alot of map area saved offline. still the best imo.
edit: sorry, realized you mentioned POI, navigation does work fine though w/offline gmaps

Unless you can't start navigation where you have a data signal. Then you have a map and your location on it, no navigation.
I've been using Copilot for a number of years now and I love it. Looks and runs beautiful on the N7...

If you have loaded a map for navigation it works fine unless you want to go a different direction than what is programmed in nav. It doesn't reroute until you have a data connection with your phone or mifi or something.

I side loaded it. Downloaded several state maps, but it still doesn't work right. It seems to be locking up (I get a black screen once I get a map open).
Edit: It seems to be working now. More testing to come.

i have it on my gnex and works great. do you know if there are any issues having it on 2 devices or does another license need to be purchased.
But, how do you use it in the car?
I meant, what kind of car holder do you use?
And don't you think it does not obstruct the driving view?

Waiting for NavNgo Primo to became available for Android (they have a version for IPhone). On PNDs (Win CE) is the BEST navigation sofware, periodTheir current version called "Primo" sold only to OEMs to be installed on PNDs is years ahead of Google Navigation. In fact Google should be smart and buy them and replace their navigation software with that one. They will save years of development on their own navigation software and will transform Android over night into the best automotive OS. Most PNDs exept the big brands as TomTom and Garmin is using this software. Hopefully it's going to be an Android version soon. The software is great but it require a customized UI for every resolution (maps are self adjusting, but the rest of UI uses bitmaps). But the software is modable, so it might not be a problem.Next in line I would try Navigon (now Garmin). Not sure how is the Android software did not play with it, their PNDs hovever were not bad, but still less fluid that IGo.I also read that some Android nav software is not on par with the older WinCE versions buy any reason, even the paid versions.

I ran it on my original Galaxy S, I have it on my Galaxy S3, and on the Nexus 7. I think as long as all are using the same google account you should be good to go.

I can't get 4.13 to start right. 4.11 did the same thing. black screen first couple of times then it was fine.
Might load 4.11 back for now until they update
I have CoPilot Live for North America and its great on the Nexus. Fast satellite link, lots of POIs, works great for car GPS alternative and local travel on foot or as a passenger. I've moved it from device to device and with frequent map updates, it's a keeper. On the down side, full NA maps = 1.2 G, so glad I have a 16G unit.
Do any of these options include free turn-by-turn voice navigation?
