Decisions, Decisions... PLEASE READ! - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, heres the scoop.. 3 days ago I started using the HTC HD2 (finally putting down my old 2G iPhone) because my dad didnt like the Windows OS, So he goes out and buys a Galaxy S i9000. Well in the meantime I discover you can put Android GB 2.3.2 on the HTC and do so. My old man see's this and now wishes he had the HTC back, also asking if I would like to trade for the Galaxy S because he always liked the phone due to the large screen (he's a big guy). My question is should I trade since the larger screen doesnt really mean anything to me?? What are some of the pros/cons between the 2 devices?? I like games, music, themes, widgets, apps etc and I am just learning the HTC and have NO CLUE about the Galaxy S. Hopefully I can get some answers from users who have used and tested both devices.. Thanks in advance!!

.. Is the milestone ... Outdated ?

i am about to buy a smartphone (for the first time since my dumbphone SE W595)
and i want something perfect that'll stay with me like 2 years or so
i checked all of the new phones (Desire + n1 + Galaxy S and millions!) and honestly even with all these teachy stuff and zippy processor .. i didn't like a phone more than the Milestone
Big screen + QWERTY keyboard + pretty good camera for a go-go price !
but .. it was released on the end of 2009 and have a 550MHz (though it can be overclocked anytime) and that locked bootloader (ugh!)
wat i want on a phone is 1-watch movies & videos , 2-loading my almost 5500 set of music in it 3- hardcore 3D gaming , 4-good camera , 5-QWERTY (regular teenager stuff) and Android !
is it really the right phone for me or i should wait for something better (e.g Milestone 2?) (as the international Droid 2) ?
Regards , Mike
I would wait, the milestone has been out for a while now and there should be some new models coming out soon. If I were you I would wait for a new qwerty android phone to be released.
I would also wait. The droid does sound like the perfect phone for you, but the thing is, all the stuff you really look forward to doing kills your battery. I have a rooted droid clocked at 1ghz. Battery life really isn't that great, but overall i sincerely love the phone.
I would wait, too...I have the Milestone, is a really great phone (as you said, big screen+QWERTY is just perfect) but buying it now is pointless, in my opinion. I would suggest to wait for new devices similar to the Milestone to come out and then make a choose.
And the camera isn't that great, really.
Thanks everyone
.. is there any great phones (or leaks) with QWERTYs in the next few weeks which are non-Motorola ? i mean is there any leaks ? (other than that ugly HTC Vision) ?
damn i wish we had a GSM version of HTC Incredible .. it's a perfect phone (only missing a keyboard though)
somebody told me girlfriends are like mobile phones, you only wish for a new and better one, as to what you have.
so there's nothing new about your dilemma.i'd suggest you go for it, because new would come but then it's price will delay or postpone you a prized possession. secondly, nowadays a mobile phone is more worthy if it it's most popular in hacking community, like Xperia X1, in my sane mind i'd never suggest this phone to anyone, but imagine ubuntu and android along with Winmo, the phone is a must have. And my dearest SE P1i.
Go for it, you'd never regret a moment of it am already looking for Xperia X1 and Milestone (second or even third hand).
yeah , your right .. but the thing is .. back in 2008 (when i only knew dumbphones and smartphones prices were a blast) i bought my beloved and now stolen SE w595 .. just a couple a days later , Here Comes SE w902 & samsung i8510 .. a better camera + bigger screen .. stuff
Honestly i felt like my new w595 was turned into bull****! i dont want that to happen next if i buy a milestone
but when i think about it .. it was out for a year .. is there really something new coming ? all the good damn phones comes to the US (droid incredible , samsung epic 4G) while leaving us lay in the dust
everytime i try to convinve myself to buy the milestone by saying (i'm just a teenager .. why would i need a 1GHz CPU and stuff like that ?) but honestly i just can't help it .. for god's sake the galaxy spica is faster than that !
beside that locked bootloader .. when i thought about it for like 2 minutes i say what's the joy having an android when you can't root it/install ROMs ? because back in the days when i had the w595 i used to change themes & flash menus like a maniac !
i've decided to wait for a non-Motorola device , i've taken myself a hour to think about it .. that's my decision .. Thanks everyone !
I literally just picked up the Milestone on Telus two days ago, and don't regret it. It's pretty sweet, and I don't see the Droid X or the Incredible coming (I assume you're in Canada, as you're looking at the Milestone..) any time soon up here.
With the customization and rooting available, it's a pretty sweet phone.
Just me though. Good luck with picking a phone.
The driod 2 is released any day now but I wonder how long we have to wait for a milestone 2
Edit: I bought my Milestone 2 weeks ago. And I love it.
it will outdated in term of operating system, currently we only get android 2.1 which everybody already has 2.2
and next time 3.0 released we can only bite our nail ^^
it will be soon!
Hi guys, actually i've more or less pretty decided to get the milestone already due to it's nice form factor and android, also pretty much i'd like to have a qwerty keyboard for a change.
I'm currently rocking a HD2, and i don't intend to sell it yet. But was interested in android after running froyo 2.2 and sense desire build on it. So i was like pretty much wanting to get an adroid device to play with and see how it goes. No suitable options in the marketplace for nexus 1 and it's way over my budget, i reckon i can get a milestone (brand new) over here in sg for around 550 Singapore Dollars, so i thought i get it! (TODAY, LOL)
So i thought i'd pop by xda for trusted opinions and rooting possibilities, and i'm faced with little support for the milestone as compared to the crazy HD2 forum, LOL. So i'm wondering is it possible to root my milestone? And what do you guys mean by bootloader locked? And why? Pardon me as i'm pretty new to android, had a g1 in the past, but didn't play much with it and sold it, now i'm back! Haha.
I'd appreciate any links to other sites for help and more info and prolly more support than what we're getting here? If you feel uneasy to post, you could pm me. Thanks!!
Any issues i must take note of with buying milestone? Since i read some had wifi and baseband issues, D-pad down button is bad etc. LOL. And the droid's back cover is loose, not sure about the milestone though. Plus is there really a huge difference in droid and milestone when it comes to development/rooting/flashing roms etc.?
The only difference i know of currently is one's CDMA the other's GSM and the droid doesn't support multi-touch natively until the updated the software as well as the droid has got fm radio?
Oh ya, there's no wireless teethering on milestone? Meaning my laptop uses my phone's network?!
Appreciate all advice!!
Sorry for uber long posts!

Man, it's really lacking in support for milestone over here at xda, or there's nothing to support at all? LOL. For the first time, i'm a little disappointed with xda. Hahahaha, i hope people could point me in the right direction for milestone news and tips etc. Anyways, heading to get it now!!
Quick answers:
- You can root the phone, as in, have access to modify the system at root level.
- A locked bootloader means you can't use any other kernels except those signed by Motorola themselves. We're all hoping for methods like 2ndboot and kexec to help us out here
- You can tether via USB,WiFi, or Bluetooth.
i have a Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 with windows mobile.. I originally wanted the Milestone but since i could get the X1 for half the price of the Milestone i decided to get it. I am now in the process of selling the X1 and getting the Milestone (probably next week)

Thanks. I went ahead and get it anyway. Haha. I'm hoping for more support and some flashing goodness soon! Plus 2.2 froyo!! Some issues or concerns i found so far. I realised that the device gets hot pretty easily and not normal kind of heat, rather at the area below the camera at the back when holding landscape. And in gmail app, you can never empty your trash permanently. This kinda sucks, as the trash always restore.

where did you get it for 550? I was at a starhub shop the other day and it wasn't even close to 550.
If you don't want to wait, there's always the Samsung Epic 4G or Galaxy S Pro, whatever it is called in your region. If you don't mind that there is no camera flash.

Are those phones even out yet ? Would you be able to install custom ROMs for them in the future?
The milestone looks better in my opinion.. (physically) but seeing how its got a locked bootloader... im afraid of buying a phone (with so many options at this day) that could be already stuck on its final OS version.
If only the Xperia X10 had a physical keyboard (i dont like the mini pro version) id probably buy it. I want an android phone with a physical keyboard not only for texting but also for emulators and the milestone seems the way to go ... as its about $420 too. (amazon)
I'm in the same boat as some of you. A former Xperia X1 user who got tired of flashing with ROMs that aren't stable and sluggish. I don't want to get an official ATT phone cause I am on the MediaNet unlimited plan and I like to tether to my laptop. I also like having a QWERTY keyboard and been wanting to try Andriod OS. Some questions:
1) What specifics should I look for to ensure I'm getting the Telus version of DROID and unlocked for AT&T to ensure 3G?
2) I saw recent news that there is no official support for Tethering or wifi router mode on DROID, but are there apps (even the Xperia X1 did).
3) Can anyone tell from just what's listed on Overstock and Amazon whether those phones will work on ATT 3G? Many thanks.
I already sold my X1, been using my old Samsung BLackjack 2....need new phone...SOON!

Any good ROMs for Galaxy S

Hello ,
Now im thinking which phone to buy. I like Galaxy S but i read that samsung have a lot of problems(gps, lag, slow UI, Very slow when you install more programs, slow on multitasking) and etc. So is there good ROM for Galaxy S to fix it and make a galaxy as functional as htc desire ?
if you want to be able to mod your phone easy my advice is stay away from samsung, I have one and its very unfriendly
There are no true custom roms for the Galaxy S yet, there are modded roms that reqire specific base roms first.
Cyanogenmod has the Galaxy Series on it's roadmap but there is no working release yet.
HTC phones are the best if you want many options for custom roms and quick releases of future updates but overall I am pretty happy with my Galaxy S even though I do miss the options I had with my Magic in terms of roms.
Im not looking a phone to mod it, im asking are the ROMs will make galaxy much better than stock and functional like a HTC Desire ? Because its necsesary to write a rom in a galaxy S

I never had any issues with GPS on my phone, it worked fine for me driving around.
The lag is a minor annoyance at best. The new JPH Froyo build seems to be running pretty well for me so far, just installed it this morning and is solid thus far.
What??
I have purchased HTC for year and I never happy with it!
Now have a Galaxy S and it is another, better world!
For the first time, after many year with htc device, have seen my Galaxy S in top of all other device in Quadrant benchmark, 2307! From now, Samsumg rock!
I still have Eclair JM7, but it is always stable, fast UI, no problem with gps at all(as already sayd), a lot of apps installed ...all good!
The only thing, have installed clagfix.
Who had say to you that things, probably doesn't know Galaxy S
Regards

Highly doubt you got that score without One Click Lag Fix. The normal Quadrant score is around 800. If it wasn't for the people on XDA our phones won't be anywhere near as awesome as they are now !

Well, if choice is between desire or galaxy s, you can choose the sgs with your eyes closed. As soon as we will have a stable froyo with voodoo kernel stable release, this phone will ROCK! I would wait new HTC models though...
On second thought, *MOVE* this ****ing thread, wrong section!

He said he used CLagFix, so very possible to get 2k+ Quadrant.
As for GPS stuff, my GPS works 60% of the time, and struggles the rest, I feel like it's kind of hit and miss depending on which ROM you are using, GPS settings, possibly area you are in, etc.
Also, I absolutely love this phone(I have a captivate but w/e still a Galaxy S, and I use I9000 ROM's anyway), and find it pretty easy to mod, and it's pretty much unbrickable.

Not true really TBH. Look at how much hassle you have to go to to root a HTC Desire for example with creating a goldcard then flashing an old firmware the finally being able to root it where as the Galaxy can be done from a simple update zip.
Yes, but we cannot be sure customs roms will eventually arrive. Imho all devs will go for Desire Hd and Desire Z

The lag is becoming less of an issue with newer ROMs but the GPS has a problem with accuracy regardless of what anyone here tells you. GPS was slow to fix in earlier firmwares but corrected in subsequent releases, this led some to claim that GPS is fixed, you'll see several comments from people waxing lyrical about getting GPS signal indoors when they couldn't before, but take it out into inner city roads when traffic is crawling a bit and it gets very confused placing you in the wrong lanes/directions etc due to poor accuracy.... basically it fails where even my old HTC magic excels, however drive on wide lane motorways and it's near flawless because accuracy isn't as critical.
Personally I'll still choose the SGS ahead of the Desire, but if you're not willing to tinker at all, then wait to see what improvements froyo delivers or choose the Desire because the JF3 firmware that ships out with most is awful, frustrating... useless!!

true, about 896. But still true which is a system partitioning bad configuration, not hardware issue
I hope Samsung fix the lag in next release!

If it took you 5 mins then it's true. It probably took less than 30 secs to root my SGS.
If I knew what I know today
.... I would never have traded my Nexus One for a Galaxy S. Here's why:
Spec wise the Galaxy S is the better phone. In real world, its utterly horrible. I suspect that the phone has not problems in the hardware, but the software really kills the experience.
What's great about it:
- It has Swype keyboard, and thats really impressive. Alas, it's not something Samsung created, they just bought it.
- Great camera application with lots of functions, takes great pictures. This is in my opinion the best thing Samsung has brought to this product.
- Acceptable battery lifetime, compared to similar phones.
- Reliable bluetooth operation, this is my first Android phone that works every time and all the time in my car.
What I expected but did not get:
- A screen that performed better outdoors. I washes out completely, and is not any better than the other phones I have had. It is bigger though.
What's driving me nuts:
- Exchange sync sucks bigtime. I keep loosing all my contacts until I force sync it again. My calendar doesnt work at all. Coming from CM6 on Nexus One I'm used to everything just working.
- Lag. This is supposed to be a fast phone. It's not in any way fast doing anything at all. If I upgrade an application from the Market, I can forget about using the phone until it has finished installing. Its a snail, and I don't care if its caused by the filesystem, the kernel or just Samsungs programmers. Its totally unacceptable and shows that this phone should not have been released. (Oh yeah, I am running lagfix, that doesnt really help, it just pushes the problem a bit ahead in time)
What Samsung couldn't bother to implement:
- Working GPS. My Nexus One and HTC Magic has far better GPS precision (and I'm not talking about fix time, which is also horrible on the Samsung). I'm glad I'm not using it for navigation.
- Stereo FM. Come on Samsung, this is 2010. I'm not using it, but why include it half heartedly?
What Samsung found more fun to do instead:
- Selection of three custom fonts, of which two are too ugly to use. Seriously?
- Widget that shows how many applications are running. Who cares about that, isn't Android supposed to end all this focusing on what is running and what is not ....
- Four different phones released that are basically the same. "The GPS isn't working. Should we fix it? Nah, lets make a phone version with four software buttons instead."
I'm about to give up on this thing. I upgraded my HTC Magic to CM6 the other day, and it seems to be running circles around my Galaxy S.
My only problem if I'm giving up on this phone, is what to get instead. Maybe the HTC Desire HD, but again it's basically the same as my Nexus One with just a bigger screen.

How did you get into hacking?

this is just basically just to see if you can remember how you got into the hacking world, and it'd be nice to know the device that started you off too! =)
well i got into this with my first smartphone, the tmobile shadow. i was perfectally fine with they way it was untill my sister told me about a website (allshadow.com and xda ) where i could do alot with it! so i checked it out, and with due time i enjoyed it, and eventually grew out of it and moved on with the touch pro 2 and actually started using XDA from then out
Sony PSP custom firmware scene, then got HTC Kaiser, then Touch Pro 2, now HD2. Before the psp stuff, I was modding my XP comp and my guitar, amps, and effect pedals.
Gotten kinda bored with it all lately tho, used to be that if it had current passing thru it, I found a way to make it run linux. I haven't gotten on a pc in 2 months and dont even miss it. My phone is all the more internet I need or have time for anymore, and it's as modded/hacked as its gonna get.

I got into hacking phones when I got my moto V710 (on verizon) and I realized they had disabled side loading .mp3 ringtones. Every knows the class action lawsuit they had because they advertised that as a feature. I started seem editing then flashing different firmwares and it all snowballed into full on modding whatever I can get my hands on.
I started with a ipod touch 2g and jailbroke it. Then got the 3g then 4g... Then I got this... knew about root because I dual boot linux windows, I thought if this was linux it was rootable, started there

I got bored... So I googled things to do with a HTC Hero.... Found theunlockr then got pointed to xda.... Found out someone had stolen my username but I tried the username with my normal password and it worked
My first smartphone was the vogue and i enjoyed it how it was and knew about xda very little and found a way to stream radio and xm radio on here and havent visited it since 2008.
i then got a tp2 and actually was fine with it until i heard about wm 6.5 was out on custom clean roms so i finally got up the courage and time to read on how to unlock and flash roms.
i was addictted to mighty roms over at ppcgeeks and loved the taskbar mods and all the fun stuff such as getting rid of crapware that sprint put on it and made it better and had 6.5.5 a few months later and enjoyed it til i heard the first fast android phone with keyboard came to sprint and had all the hardware specs on it : The Epic 4g, unlock htc phones it didnt leave any feutures out of it and im loving it 7 months later.
i read up on rooting and rooted and started flashing roms and mods and been even more happy, this phone can do it all.
I also have a jailbroken ipod touch,
So it all started with my tp2 getting irritating waiting for sprint to deliver an update to 6.5 and the ugly colors on the interface of sense
It started with my old and grey (it's actually black) HTC Touch back in 2006 and a part of me just can't be satisfied with a stock product. No can do babydoll, no can dosville.
well i had a piece of crap sidekick lx and my cousin had a g1 rooted and i saw the true possibility of a phone so i bought a white g1 and he helped me hack it and get started now im rocking a mytouch 4g with CM7
haha, some great stories so far!
its funny how seeing little things go a long way to opening doors for you to do more!
also cause of my TP2 i ended up getting 3 friends get a TP2 cause they were blown by the awesomeness that it is! lol
Started with my linux based moto ROKR E8. What a pos that phone was, but i loved it. I made it do anything my friends iphone could do, basicly turning it into a monster that used wayyy to much power. Then i got a motorola defy. Flashed some of Higgsy and HandlerExploits roms. That wasnt enough for me though. I tried updating to 2.2 and kept getting stat. 7 error. Then i ended up here. Htc droid incredible, stock rooted. Not really feelin anything in the dev section over there. Maybe ruby if we dont get a 2.3 update soon. But ya, im still learning.

Well, I first started off by hacking with psp custom firmware then I moved onto game hacking such as COD/Battlefield. As soon as I got my X8 I went to the internet to find out how to get Android 2.2 on it, google lead me here now I have a Xperia Play and HTC Desire S but my only interest is to hack my X8.
I started hacking when I was like 6 and I hacked AOL for free internet then I moved on to learning some C++ at 11 and then I started hacking my Motorola Q. Started Android with the Nexus One after seeing how open Android was (ex-iPhone user)
I started patching with Siemens Mobile in year 2005, next Sony Ericsson K750i, Nokia and now SGS.

[Q] Non technical question serious problem:)

Hi XDA,
My wife and i have the same phone Galaxy i9000.I have installed gingerbread powered by juwe 4.3.1 and she still on stock eclair 2.1.
How to convince my wife to do upgrade?
Thanks in advance
Show her your phone. If she likes it, tell her you can do that to hers?
Just do it without asking her... as long as you set it up correctly, you'll be a winner! (Just don't screw it up though, because she'll never trust you with technology again.
I've found it difficult to get my wife enthused about technology.... I don't think having a deodexed zipalinged GB rom with streamlined kernels is that appealling to women

Just beat her up and flash the phone. Or wait till she's sleeping, take her phone, back up her info and flash it - then restore her info, put all the widgets and applications exactly the way they were and she won't even know LOL. ....oh, of course, you can always try to convince her with words but that almost never works with women
Ha ha nice to talk about something else except flashing firmware etc
[email protected]
do not change or upgrade anything.. if a woman sees a smallest mistake (in this case a lag maybe) she never blames samsung or google or the device but blames you without even thinking that the phone used to be worse with the old firmware
You should know your wife well enough to answer this yourself, if in doubt....lets just say what do you cherish most? If you want tech buddies, just hang out at xda, its not all about tech stuff, its a true mutual community

[Q] Should I get an HD7?

Okay I'll try to keep it short and sweet.
>Buy HD2 in 2010
>End of 2011 digitizer dies and phone gets permanent white screen brick (no clue how honestly)
>Now hate HTC because they're dicks about their faulty phones and repairs
>I'm due for an early upgrade from T-Mobile and I could get the new 710
>The Radar is nice but 8GB won't cut it for me plus I don't feel so good about a white phone, also much more expensive than say an used HD7 or a new 710.
>Seeing lots of cheap HD7's on eBay
>Getting boners
So the question: Considering that the HD2 and HD7 are such similar devices, are the digitizers as big of an issue as with the HD2's? I would literally burn the HD7 if I wake up one day the the digitizer goes off on me. Also, are there any popular/ common issues with the HD7 I should be aware of? Really considering the HD7 since I loved everything about its older brother the HD2.
Using a Samsung Comeback now and this phone is killing me, literally. I feel like I'm in 2006.
Input appreciated.
Samsung is better right now
I have had hd2 used for a year and now my cousin is using it. Then I bought an hd7 but really I would prefer hd2. Now I am using galaxy s2 and hd7 is as a spare phone.
If you can find a nice Schubert (HD7) cheap, get it...the memory can be upgraded and there are custom roms for it. I've had mine for over a year, the keyboard bug is the biggest problem but an update is coming.

similar situation
hey, guys. newbie here
since i wanted to basically ask this question, i thought i would just ask here and not bother opening a new thread.
all i want to know is: is this phone worth getting?
www[dot]eglobaldigitalcameras[dot]com[dot]au/htc-hd7-t9292-16gb-unlocked.html
anybody happen to know if this will have any problems in flashing custom roms? (i really don't want to have to do gold card)
i hope i'm not hijacking this thread :\ but thank you to anyone who replies
hi bro
i have an iphone and recently bought a new hd7 (8GB) but the exiting point is felt in love with it!
for example in start menu microsoft used some exiting animatione
and somthing else that microsoft isn't like apple or other companies and they're helping hackers to make the best os ever
in my opinion if you want to have a wp7 device HD7 is like monster
and for flashing custom roms simply do these works:
-goto boot loader (by pressing vol down + power up)
-load RSLP/HSPL
-run ROMUpdateUtility.exe on your PC
-click update then wait
Note: don't download the wrong rom for your phone because it can seriously damage it
Don't buy WP7 phone, get an Android!
Your GPS will be useless, there is no app other than online downloading ones that require 3G. Get android and iGo with offline maps, be free!

And see, I myself am an Android user/owner, for the past 2 years... and I'm over here looking to jump ship.
It all comes down to preference. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Android, but it gives me something to tinker with ALL DAY LONG. I find myself wasting 6-8 hours a day (at home and at work) tinkering with the phone, researching mods, flashing ROMs, reloading apps after flashes... I spend more time tinkering with the phone than I do actually using it!
I'm 39 years old for crying out loud - I don't need to be throwing a 3rd of my day away playing with this toy! LOL! I'd rather have something that looks great as is and just works!

Untrue.
Navigon now uses offline maps. Also Nokia Drive. Upon first setup asks you what maps you want to download.

hi, in my opinion you should go for an htc hd7. right now its hardware is not quite up to par with the latest phones out there esp droids but its the combination of the fluid and smooth OS with respectable hardware performance that still makes the hd7 a joy to use ^_^
I'm getting one because I love windows phone 7, the ui is like melted butter! So smoothe, no lagg.
I also am personally switching from android, mostly because I cracked the screen on it.
Though android always seems to have a sluggish and laggy UI, even with the most top notch specs.
I played around with many of the WP7 phones on display, and I love them.
The only draw back idea have to say, is the lack of apps to choose from. The games from Xbox live are pretty fun though.
