Hi,
I want to know if there is a way to divide partition (internal memory of the phone, which is 8gb)? It is divided into 1.85GB programs and the rest is free memory to upload whatever I want. My main question is can I reduce this 1.85GB memory, such as 500mb because it does not override more than 300-450mb for programs and remains very free I want to use it (do not use memory card).

I don't know of any way to repartition the internal SD to lower the space reserved for Apps...and even if I did I would caution against it.
Messing with the partitions is one of the few ways to really blitz your phone accidentally, and unless you are an expert in linux/android architecture I would steer clear.
Before a month or two I had uploaded a version of Darky and CWM had an option to split that particular memory. I did it as I wanted. But then, I put another version I did factory reset and returned as before. So now if there is any such way? In CWM no such option at the moment (with 9.5).

Unable to install an app because of not enough memory. When I started to correct the problem (clearing caches, moving to SD card etc.) I realized I have only 196MB of internal memory. Not the 512MB the phone supposedly contains. A third party file manager confirms this. This is storage memory and not Rom. I am using about 131MB and have about 65MB free. where is the rest of my memory and how can I access it or clear it?
You can't. 512MB is total memory your phone has, out of it there's 200MB reserved for DATA partition, this is what you have. The other space is divided between other partitions - SYSTEM (holding your firmware), RADIO, etc. Nothing is missing, this is how it works.
Can this memory be expanded? I bookmarked one webpage (my daughters school lunch menu) and it took up 80MB. I couldn't even receive a text until I cleared it.
No, it can't be expanded - but the apps from it can be moved to SD by various methods, both Froyo official method and Apps2SD+, which leaves all of this partition for application data only. The effect is the same - lots of free internal storage.
It seems to me that the memory layout on the Captivate isn't in line with other Android devices.
Looking at the specs of the Captivate on www.google.com/phone I am seeing:
RAM: 512 MB
Internal Storage: 16000 MB
Yet in looking at "SD card and phone storage" in settings I see.
Internal phone storage, Available space: 1.60 GB
Internal SD card: 13.03 GB
It seems to me that the 16000 MB is partitioned so here are my questions.
1) Where is the 512 MB and what is it for?
2) Why is it if I install some app that is supposed to show me external SD usage it always instead shows that 13 GB internal flash volume?
And in a broader sense...
3) What is the general memory model for Android? I see RAM, Internal, External. What are they all for?
I'm not sure, but of that internal 16gb of storage space, is it merely partitioning a section of that away for the OS?
That is my question. I don't understand the memory model.
This might not be accurate since I don't own an android phone but i'm bored

System Ram, used by the OS and apps as volatile memory.
2) Why is it if I install some app that is supposed to show me external SD usage it always instead shows that 13 GB internal flash volume?

Because the 13gb volume is the "general" volume where you can personally store whatever you want, it functions just like an external Sd card would.

Ram - It is for the OS and apps, they need that as volatile storage to function, nothing is really stored there in the long term, the OS manages that so don't worry about it.
Internal memory - This used for many things, app install and to store files like music, pictures, etc. Internal memory is usually partitioned so that you only have a set amount (probalby that 1.60 you see ) for apps install and the rest if for whatever you want(the 13gb).
External memory - That is just an SD card you can use to expand your internal memory, right now (Android 2.1) it only works to add more space for files(music, photos, docs,) but with with froyo (android 2.2) you'll be able to move installed apps to this external (and the internal 13gb) drive.
Ok here's how it's laid out.
Yes, we have 512MB of RAM. However we as the end user will only see around 300MB of that, give or take 20MB. That's because some of it used by the OS and the GPU for different tasks.
That 16GB of internal storage you see, is partitioned off. We actually get around 13GB to use for ourselves. That 1.6GB you also see starts off as around 2GB (I would assume), and the rest used by the system for the OS, apps, cache, etc...
It's just like a hard drive on a computer in that respect. Sure you but a 1TB hard drive, but you actually only get to use around 850GB of it due to formatting and whatnot.
My problem is that I cant install apps in the 13gb partition, I dont know why..
I tried with:
adb shell pm setInstallLocation 0 this is Auto mode but.. installs in 1.8 partition
..........................................1 this install on the 1.8 partition
..........................................2 this install on the sd card
..........................................3 doesent exist xD but i tried..
so does exist any way to install apps for default in the 13.3 internal SD card partition, or any way to errase the partition??..
Try using "apps2sd" from market. It should be app2sd or apps2sd.
But I don't understand the need to do this, given that Captivate has one of the best memory amounts allocated for system.
Also note that, the apps on SD won't be available during the times when apps like "media scanner" are running.
As I know the total internal space on Nexus is 512Mb. Why I am always getting 196MB AVAILABLE SPACE (with or without APP2SD)? Where I lose 316Mb internal memories?
Well, if you wanted to delete android off your phone, you could have all of that space, but you wouldn't have much of a phone would you?
Android itself has to be stored somewhere, and it's not going to be on the sdcard.
As n1 users the internal memory is one thing that has always plagued us. ~200mb is not much.

ok thanks for the answer but why on my Magic I am getting 188MG availble space exactly as its internal memory? where is the android on my Magic? Why I can increase that 188Mb by using A2SD?
On my Nexus is always 196MB availble space...
They may have advertised the Magic as having XXXMB space to install apps, where the N1 was advertised as having 512MB of internal space. That internal space is divied up between your system (where android is installed), cache (where all temporary files are downloaded - like the apks for market apps before they get installed), and data (where all your apps are installed to and all your settings saved).
And you can't "increase" the space of the magic by using a2sd. What you can do is fake the phone into thinking that your sdext partition is internal memory, so that apps can be installed to it and thus frees up your actual internal storage for the data for those apps. The two most popular ways to do this are DarkTremor's a2sd and S2E. Both require partitioning your sdcard and both require you to have root access on your phone (S2E is advertised as CM7 only, although it may work on CM7-based ROMs).
If you use the built-in app2sd that comes with any Android version 2.2 and up will not utilize the sdext partition on the card. It will just store files on the sdcard in a protected folder. This isn't as thorough as the above methods, as you can't store any apps on the sdcard that contain widgets or tie into the system (like facebook).
I am running CM7.1.0 on my nook color off the SD card. I used the YouTube tutorial by the Crash Tech Dummies. Now I notice that I am only allowed only 1GB of storage on the SD card. I used partition wizard to increase the space on the 4th partition like I was instructed. I would prefer to install the apps to the SD card so I have already burned through the space provided. Bellow I have listed what I see in partition magic. Should I move the free space in the 4th partition into the first? Or should I load the cm7 onto the HD of the nook? I am a bit of a noob but I have gotten this far.
My 16 GB card partitions read:
G:boot 30.32mb used 118.69mb unused
*: 179.55mb used 283.25mb unused
*: 367.34mb used 597.50mb unused
*: 6.68 gb used 6.61gb unused
Any suggestions would be great…I don’t know what else to do.
Help me XDA Developers you my only hope…

First of all, what is "1GB of storage on the SD card" you're talking about?
Secondly, the 4th partition has nothing to do with holding installed apps.

when i go into settings, apps, storage use, sd card it says 1.0 gb used 0.00 free...i was assuming this was referring to a section of the sd card. I also assumed that the 4th partition was being used by something do the fact that half of it has been used by something...

Quoting from VeryGreen's instructions
Partition layout for the SD cards depends on size:
Less than 600M - unsupported.
up to 1G cards gets: system of ~300M and data of the rest of space. No FAT partition
2G cards (more than 1G up to 1800M) gets: 300M system, 612M data, rest is FAT sdcard
more than 2G cards gets: 460M system, 975M data, rest is FAT for sdcard.
Your first partition is the boot, nothing else should go on here.
Your second partition is the system partition containing the OS and system applications
Your 3rd partition is the data partition used for downloaded apps. The space allocated is adequate for a decent number of downloaded apps but may get tight if you load lots of games. You can move apps to "SD" which is the 4th partition if you get tight on space.
Your 4th partition is the "SD" user data area. This can be used by apps for their working folders and is also where you put stuff like media (pictures, music, video). It is the partition that will normally get mounted as a drive on a PC when the USB is connected and USB disk storage is turned on via the notification panel.
You say the 4th partition has got 6.68GB data on already? That should start off fairly empty until you put stuff on there.
I do have music and pictures on the device that i uploaded so that's where the items on partition #4 came from.
When i try and move the applications to the sd card it tells me that there is not enough room on the card. Also when i plug in the nook to my computer without the sd card in it shows the applications on the internal hard drive. Should i try and move space from the 4th partition to the 3 and see if that helps?
Thanks,
Steve

I'm a little surprised it says there is no room available to move an app if the partition still shows 6GB free. Have you tried using Apps2SD app. This will show space available and is a convenient way to move stuff around. Another possibility is that you are trying to do this whilst USB connected to the PC. That won't work as the Nook software can't access the SD partition while it is PC mounted.
Currently you said there was nearly 600MB free in your 3rd partition where new downloads go. If so I wouldn't bother with trying to move stuff until you get tight on space there.
If that happens and you just need to create some more app space in the 3rd partition then you can use a partition tool on the PC like minitools to reallocate some of the space from 4 to 3 to give yourself more app space.
I tried the apps2sd and i get the same error. It sends me to the same place as i discussed above and when i tell it to send it to the sd card i get the same error. "failed to move application, there is not enough storage space".
I am not trying to move anything while i have the nook attached to my computer. the only time i really used that function was to add music and some pictures.
This is really starting to get frustrating. I do appreciate all your help.
Is another option loading CM7 to the nook instead of the SD card?
I only used the SD CM7 method for a short while and I don't think I ever tried to move apps to the "SD" so maybe there is an issue trying to do this.
I think you have two choices.
If you stick with SD then increase the data partition to give yourself more room for apps.
If you never want to use the B&N OS then the internal memory is the best option. The SD card then becomes a single partition user space card and you can certainly move apps to it. If you do this then also consider using the zip that increases the internal data partition to 2GB to give yourself more internal room for apps anyway.

I think ill try adjusting the partition and see if that helps. Like you said if it doesn't ill look into loading onto the internal memory. I am not to impressed with the B&N software and i use the kindle software for my e-reading.
Is there a method you could recommend for loading it onto the internal memory? A step by step tutorial would help out lots. I am not familiar with the zip you are referring to.
Thanks,
Steve

Yes. If you don't think you'll use the B&N then internal is the way to go. Especially if you use Amazon Kindle for your books.
The easiest method in my view is to use the Eyeballer Clockwork boot SD and use that then to flash the main ROM and gapps zips.
You can find the most straightforward instructions here but I would use the KANG MiRaGe ROM as the main OS.
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/8208-guide-install-cm71-clockworkmod-to-emmc-all-nooks-updated101111/
The 2GB partition zip can be found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1094371
This can actually be applied at same time as installing the OS and gapps. Put the repartition zip, the ROM zip and the gapps zip on the Eyeballer SD card then use the menus to flash repartition, ROM and then gapps.
If you also follow the advice to put ROM manager and flash clockwork to the internal as well then future updates become very easy and do not even involve removing the SD card.
Ive decided that the best solution is to install on the internal rather than the sd card. i think this will be less of a pain in the butt in the long run.
being new to android and coming over from apple (booooo) is there anyway to easy re-install the apps that i have already downloaded? I do have one that i did pay for.
Steve
easy way to re-install? hmmm, maybe not but I would suggest you make the backup for all of your apps first (meaning save all .apk files to somewhere else)
ok here goes nothing lol
Titanium backup would allow you to back up all your apps. If you save the Titanium back up folder (say onto a PC via USB) then after you have done the internal install then put the Titanium back up folder back onto the fresh SD card and you can restore the apps back from there.
everything seems to be working just fine...thank you all for the help and advice...

Hey I know this should probably go under Q&A, but After I get the awnser I will post howto and directions. Mainly I wanted to repartition the pre-install, and maybe the data, and maybe cache, and maybe even the osh, and internal sdcard.
1. Would like to install a webtop mod on internal memeory not using external sdcard, to do this would need to repartition internal memory.
2. Would like to resize cache partition remove 300+ MB, change data partition remove 1GB, change internal memory remove 1GB, change pre-install, and osh remove any exsess memory, probably 300+ MB, wich would give me around 3 GB of memeory freed up internally. I would also like to remove any exsess on system, but that isnt nessicary. if I am able to do all of this, and remove excess memory on system the remaining memeory on system would become a swap partitoin
3.create 2 new partitoins internaly after the last partion on your device, normaly is the internal sdcard, would be a 3GB partition and a 100-200 MB partition, the 3GB would be for the webtop mod to sdcard, only now hosted internally. and the 100-200 would be for swap space, I might up the swap space to 512MB and the webtop down 2.5 depends on how this all works, and what I need it to do when I am done.
Please Post some replys, links , and info. I remember someone on here did change the pre-install partition, I also know that the safestrap 1-2.0 remaps the pre-install partiton for the safestrap to stay. please post all info and help me make my device usable on the front line.
