I feel dumb asking this, as I have seen it asked many time in my past three hours of searching, but none of the answers I found seem to be what I need and want.
When I try to connect to my company exchange server, I get the error:
Setup Could Not Finish
This server requires security features your phone does not support.
From what I can tell, the company exchange server is running 2007 SP1 at the moment.
My coworker has a Droid which works fine. He has very different options when setting up his exchange, asking for more security information than I have on mine. (He is running 2.2.1 version of Android, while I have only 2.2, and I know our phones and ROMs are very different.)
My phone simply asks for email, password, username, server, and if I will use SSL, etc. His phone asks for other things, including a PIN, I think he said.
I have seen many posts talking about how to install an email.apk that will bypass the security requirements. I would like instead to get my email to work as expected with the security features. Can someone please point me to the correct thread or link or something that will tell me how to fix this? Thanks in advance!
EDIT/SOLUTION: When I flashed a ROM running Android OS 2.2.1 (rather than just 2.2) it seems to have fixed the problem. Currently running Serendipity 6.4 and had to also flash the Serendipity Add-On email app (there is no email.apk installed initially). Looks like, as Pirateghost stated, that 2.2.1 or later is required for the more "secure" exchange server settings.
i've seen that when the phone either times out because of wrong information, or there is a connection issue. also remember that your phone should be pointed to you OWA address, instead of the server named address...
not sure that this info can help any more, but give it a shot and let us know... i'm sure we can collectively troubleshoot from there
When I put in the wrong credentials, it tells me "the username our password is incorrect" or something to that effect. When I put in the correct username and password, etc, it gives me the above message.
Sent from my Samsung Captivate
Try not using autodiscover, manually type in the server name and etc and you wouldn't use your OWA address, you would use your exchange server's root address for ex: mail.domain.com, play around with it should eventually work.
the problem here is the security settings on your exchange server, and you need 2.2.1 in order to comply or use the modified email.apk that gets rid of the need for the security....
You might want to check out:

It has an email.apk that works for Exchange Server.
@greenleaf10: I have all ready followed that thread and installed that, it did not help.
@Pirateghost: thank you, I was afraid of that, most the ROMs I follow do not have a 2.2.1 version. Can the 2.2.1 email.apk be used with 2.2? Or do I need a full upgrade phone wide?
I had similar issues and wound up installing Touchdown. It's been well worth the money, no issues at all with Exchange support, including S/MIME.

Jumranb, what ROM are you using? I was on Cognition 4.2.2. I had no issue with using the default Email program talking to my company's Exchange Server. Currently, I am on Andromeda3. The Email program that comes with this ROM did not work for me. Both Cognition and Andromeda are 2.2 based ROMs. Since I know Cognition worked for me, I simply copied the email.apk file from Cognition to Andromeda and it worked fine.
Same problem here with 2.2 ROMs. I used Perception until it was abandoned, but now I am on Serendipity. I plan on staying with it until Gingerbread.
I WAS running Cognition 4.3 which did not work for my email problem. Like you, I am currently running Andromeda3, which is working much better for me all around (battery life, stability, etc), but also does not work with my email problems.
How do I tell (before installing a ROM) if the ROM I want to install is 2.2 or 2.2.1? I notice a lot of people post the build their ROM is based on, but I don't know how to tell which OS version that is if the author does not specifically say so in their release post.

Hello,
i am running Froyo on my nexus one.
When configuring a new Exchange support, i get:
""SETUP COULD NOT FINISH.
This server requires security features your phone does not support""
Touchdown is working fine and reports the following securities features:
Allow simple password
Password/PIN required
Failed attempts 10
Min length 5
Min Complex 3
Timeout 1800 sec.
Password recovery
So the question are:
1) Which of this securities is not yet implemented natively in froyo?
2) Will it make it in the final froyo release?
If any of you has some inputs, it would be nice to share.
Thanks in advance!
Best

Sorry I cannot help with your problem other than to say that I have exactly the same issue. I am really shocked that Google have not got this fully working. We are hardly talking about a new protocol here!
Whilst I have Touchdown and have done since moving to Android last year, this single problem has stopped my company giving everyone Android phones. Come on Google, get it sorted!
Maybe because the foryo we got is not final? Ever thought of a unfinisched product that you use, is not finisched?

I think the point is that proper exchange support should really have been there from day one.
You just don't build a serious, high end smart phone with out proper integration to corporate mail (read exchange ).
Unless you're Google apparently.

Well, I work and live in the corporate world and use my phone as such a device. I guess I sort of agree with you there about the exchange support, I can't really legitimize why they didn't incorporate this almost-brainless sync method.
Does the security policy of your works exchange server require to have a screen lock pin, specifically mobile device security policies? I noticed, after wiping from Froyo(with screen lock pin prior to EX acct) to CM and then back to Froyo(no screen lock when configuring), that I received an error that setup could not finish, I assume this is because without having a screen lock policy set up on the phone the exchange server will not authenticate to my device. Check that out. Also, this is not a finalized product.
Mine works fine...and I manage the Exchange system here...no problems.
My biggest issue is that Google has provided half-ass support for Exchange, and this version is no different.
You can't even move an item to another folder from the inbox with the stock Froyo.
The Desire Rom has the functionality and ability, best interface and options compared to the stock Android.
The stock Rom sucks honestly...if it weren't for Desire...I would still have my iPhone, even they figured out, licensed and got working properly the Exchange support 18 months ago. Windows mobile devices have had this for 3-4yrs.
My first post! May as well make it contributory.
It is interested to note that one may need a PIN lock set up first *before* adding an exchange account that requires one... I know I haven't been able to get our 2.2 Nexus One's to connect to our corporate Exchange Server for my girlfriend and I.
Let me go change to a PIN lock and see what happens when I try to add the exchange account...
Yep, no go still. "Unable to open connection to server."
They really need to add a Verbose button to these error messages.
still not working
Hello,
I tried setting up a PIN code before starting up the email application.
Does someone knows where to find the email app log file to see what is not good?
Thanks in advance!

To be honest, I tried using touchdown (which as great as it is, still lacks a lot of features), then tried using the Froyo Email/Calendar apps... Nothing has ever worked smoothly with Exchange + Android. I ended up migrating my email server (luckly it is only a personal email server) to Google Apps, and I have never been so happy with the performance and stability.
It is a tough cookie to swallow, but gmail is much better then Exchange on Android...
Hi all,
Last week i flashed my i9000 with the froyo jpo build, since doing this my exchange mail is so slow. When i open the email program now my phone hangs, eventually it comes back to life but i still cannot navigate the email. The scrolling stills and i almost never get emails to open.
Is this a known bug; and is there a fix?
Vince

It's a known Froyo problem with exchange accounts, only a lagfix will fix it.
Also, set the exchange account to "Push" to prevent a wake-lock which drains the battery
Can you advise me on how I can root froyo, it seems that all the methods and apps I have found are only for 2.1!

I have come across your message via google and have almost thrown away my galaxy mainly because of this terrible performance. I used to do my mail via my iPod touch 2nd generation which still outperforms even as 'old device' the galaxy. I updated 2 weeks ago via Samsung Kies after long waiting and tracking the news about the foreseen froyo performance benefits. However, apart from people mentioning Touchdown or K9 as alternative for (corporate) email, it 's still unclear to me how to solve this specific issue other then using the Galaxy as mobile accesspoint for my iPod touch. A bit stupid for such a device.
Besides this, after the update I loose icons like nu.nl on my homescreen after rebooting for sure but also without..
I would love if we can get directions how to solve this in a way that I do not 'blow up' my device. Yes, I have read - not done yet - about Odin, unrooting etc. but I, like akaVintz, need a more 'proven solution guide' because the lack of experience in the Android environment.
On 2.1 I used to have and Exchange and a pop3 email account set up and all worked fine.
When I updated to 2.2 the whole mail client became very very slow and many times it used to hang and many cases it would force close the email app. I simply did a factory reset and this corrected all the issues. I didn't really loose anything as my contacts etc etc are syncd with exchange I just had to download and reinstall some apps
I to have done the factory reset, like you say it's not really a problem when all your contacts are in exchange, it just doesn't seem to of cured the slowness. I really just want to apply what ever I need to sort the lag out on 2.2. Everything I have found refers only to 2.1.i have downloaded apps and they won't work for me. Please help...¿

Maybe is a service relating to a third party app that might be causing it. Do a bit of trial and error stopping and restarting services. I found one of my ip widgets was causing a lot of slow down once removed I got back to 2.1 speed.
Email performance 6 weeks later Galaxy S 2.2
As suggested I did a factory reset and it looked this corrected the mail performance issues. Having added only a few apps in the meantime (and moved to external SD card where possible), and killed any widget on the main screens I again suffer from lags (force kill email) and Android BSD instead of windows BSD. Difference is Black and Blue. Having Black Screens of Death in 2011 is not very user friendly. Reading further about something like z4root etc. makes me feel like switching to the IPhone or giving it a change. No idea of the email works better then. Apart from that, comparing my 2,5 years old ipod touch email app which does HTMl flawless with this Android 2.2 exchange client is like Apple was already 5 years ahead a that time. Anyway, it does not perform at all, did a side by side test with a HTC desire which theoratically should have been slower....but not....drives me to the last option of rooting. But wich one? So to start the weekend I hope some can share their (rooting) experience giving my Android experiences with email.
Just rooting won't make Exchange email any better. Flashing a newer ROM (which will bring root in the process) will. JPO is considerd an old ROM by now. We are at JPY by now, which is a lot better, lagfixes are no longer needed to have a fast Galaxy.
Flashing is really simple with Odin, just make sure you can get into download mode before attempting flashing and there is almost no way to mess up your Galaxy S for good. All original ROMs are available at samfirmwares.com, i suggest to read up on there, or read the Android Development subforum (which can be intimidating i admit)
I am uncertain if JPY have any improvements on this but I encounter the same problem in a stock I9000 ROM
- Click on the exchange inbox, took 3 minutes to go to the list of email
- Click on email , took 3-4 minutes and you may see the email or the email application will crash.
I was super frustrated by it as it a company mail system that I rely on, so I root the phone and get lagfix... currently with around 108 mails in inbox...opening every mail is a breeze, also facebook and android market load much faster too.
I am using a I9000ZSJPE s.w as its a Hong Kong Rom
Much better email performance with JS3 the dutch jpy update
Yesterday i flashed with odin to this samsung pre-released stock update after installing the 3 button recovery/download fix. The performance increase is indeed extreme good and to my surprise the email client suddenly supports html to a degree i can live with now. i cite someone who wrote that obviously samsung released a great piece of hardware but to early for delivering good software. anyway i really can recommend this version 2.2.1 after a lot of frustration.
I had 2 Nook Colors I bought Friday. Today I have successfully set up one with 1.1.0 and autonooter'd using 3.0. Followed instructions and everything works as assumed.
On the second nook (wife's), I can load Autonooter, but when I get to the YouTube part, it has a network issue. I then try and go to GMail and it says the account is not set up to sync, but where it wants me to set this up is not a settings option in Nook Color Tools or anywhere I know.
I've had to reset this device twice back to factory settings. Can someone give me an idea on what I can try to do this differently?
I tried a third time by setting up the Google Account at the account setup screen during setup, but still have the problem. Seems that there is some GSM settings popping up on this device.
Wife is not happy that my NC can be rooted and her's cannot. I'm to the point of returning hers and getting a new one.
So, her device works fine as-is before trying to root it? Wireless is fine, connections are okay, browser works, etc?
I'd say double-check that you're actually on 1.1.0 if you're using the noot for 1.1.0, or maybe wait for the real Auto Nooter to see if that works better.. Should be out in a day or two hopefully.
Yeah, her device works fine stock. I have flashed it back to stock 1.0, stock 1.0.1, etc. each time doing a sideload update to 1.1.0. I then used the Autonooter for 1.1.0 and I keep getting some issue with setting up her gmail account on the phone.
If I try and set it up during the Android Setup, it loops and simply makes me set it up again. Otherwise, if I skip...I get asked to set up gmail account when trying the YouTube My Channel portion of the setup. I get the network error there.
What I have noticed is that when setting up the account on the Android Start-up section, it gives me a notification of sync/connections, but the account does not setup to sync. This is the problem - I can't find where to make the account sync or complete setup with the Autonooter I guess.
Like I said, my Nook works fine and was the first one I did. I followed the same procedures on her's and it is the same issue each time.
Disclaimer: She doesn't use the Gmail account much, but I logged into on PC. Not sure if that is a factor.
Thanks for your feedback!

Best advice I can give (though it seems one device may have something goin on for sure) is that you earn some brownie points and give her yours and get yourself a new one! Amazing the future favors returned by an action like this, hehe.
Great idea. Where can I adjust the account settings for her account in place of mine? (Google account)...Thanks.

Both my wife and I use same account for the Market (really don't like paying twice for apps...we do the same for purchased books from kindle / B&N)...you can add / remove google mail accounts from inside google mail settings. Just click ADD ACCOUNT, and disable yours (or at least disable sync).
**Disclaimer** Sharing apps across multiple devices in the same household is smart, and not a slight to developers at all. We purchase apps and books, and both use them...that's called economical
Oh also.be sure to check out these cases for your new toys! We both have them, and they're perfect!!

Have you tried just doing it from 1.0.1? Is there a specific reason you want to be on 1.1.0?

Is her G-Mail account linked to YouTube? This is a pre-requisite. Good Luck!
The easy (but time consuming) fix for this is to downgrade to 1.0.0 or 1.0.1 (make sure the downgrade was successful via settings-device info-about or whatever it is.) Then use one of the older auto-nooters to noot that version. From here, if you still would like to have a rooted 1.1 ROM, install rom manager from the Market and use it to flash the 1.1 pre-rooted ROM from the dev section. This would be the best way in my opinion.
Like many other users, I want to be able to sync my nook color with my work's exchange server. Unfortunately, the default email.apk wouldn't work for me. There is a well documented issue with Android 2.2 and its handling of security certificates... but I digress.
So, what's the fix? Well I found the fix here: http://laur.ie/blog/2010/09/exchange-2010-sp1-sync-with-android-froyo/
But I've saved you a trip and pasted the (slightly revised) instructions below.
Download the 2.2 stock Email.apk from here using the browser on your nook:
http://denness.net/Email.apk
[File is also attached]
Don’t attempt to install it, let it go in to your download folder on your SD card. The instructions below assume the file is in your /download folder on your SD card.
Open a terminal on your device. I use Terminal Emulator. (Type exactly what appears after "Run:" and hit enter)
Run: su
Run: mount -o remount,rw /system
Run: mv /system/app/Email.apk /sdcard/backup_Email.apk
Run: cp /sdcard/download/Email.apk /system/app
Reboot for good measure
Set up your sync, and enjoy a refreshing beverage
for your hard work
Nobody else had this problem?
eclair fix?
I had this problem on eclair/stock rom. Do you know of a fix for eclair?
Thanks it almost worked for me. I was able to add a exchange 2010 account. But it won't actually sync. Before I could only add a 2007 acount. So close, thinking I could try the email.apk from my Captivate?

Surprised that this would even work, I'd think it'd need more framework or other files. but I'm willing to give it a go.
Although honestly I don't think it'll help me, I don't think 2.2 supports the Exchange security that my works new Google Apps implementation requires. They keep saying "iPhone only, no other phones work". I still bet that Sense and Touchdown would work, but stock Android is missing some features.

The thing is, its only this build I have had this problem. The stock 2.1 and HC works. Also my Captivate on 2.2 works as well. Something with this build and exchange 2010. I checked the server but nothing made a difference. I played with imap/pop3 settings and tried to use that.
I wish I could port over the HC email app, that one is sweet. I can't for HC to be AOSP!
I was running one of the mofo 5.0 images on my xt1096 until recently, and everything worked as expected (including exchange email). Recently I flashed the 5.1 mofo image from mikeoswego's thread on the topic:

(Can't post there, since the forum forces new users to start new threads instead of participating in existing conversations)
Since the move to the 5.1 image, my exchange accounts in the stock email app has stopped working. Looking around I see lots of chatter about Google's move away from the stock app in Lollipop. BUT...
Why did it work in the 5.0 image and not the 5.1?
And, more to the point, is there a way to get it working like it was in the 5.0 image??

There was a request to have Exchange3 instead of Exchange2 in the rom. You can setup your Exchange email accounts in GMail and things will be basically the same as with the old stock email app.

Does the switch from Exchange2 to Exchange3 eliminate the possibility of using the stock email app for exchange?
I have a few reasons why I want to use a separate email app for Exchange. The Exchange account is for work, gmail for personal, and so it is nice to keep them visually separate. Additionally, I want to be able to manage my Moto ActiveDisplay notification options differently (no notifications for Exchange emails, but yes for Gmail).
Is there a way to accomplish this with the current image I am using?
I do plan to S-OFF my device soon, and I assume that might open me up for more extreme options to get this working...
I've been using the Outlook app to supplement this functionality. It's not idea, and it seems to consume 10%-15% battery, which is much much more than the stock app used to.
I have absolutely no issues using an exchange account in the stock e-mail application. I am on stock 5.1 on my XT1095.

Thanks, imaginary, this confirms that the functionality was probably changed by the addition that mike made to the image. It's not a problem, necessarily, just unexpected.
imaginary, would you mind confirming the versions of your stock email app an Exchange Services (if you have it installed, it would be under Settings -> Apps -> All). Thanks!!

Unfortunately, Exchange2 for the stock email and Exchange3 for GMail didn't coexist so the old stock email is out. And the old Exchange2 can cause weird problems depending on how your Exchange admin set the server up. The new GMail has basically merged the old GMail and old pop3/imap/exchange program into one.
You ought to try setting up your Exchange account in GMail. While Gmail can combine everything into one inbox, it can be set to keep everything separate. You can select whether to sync or not for each account, whether to delete or not from the server when deleting from the phone for each account, notification on/off for each account, signatures, etc.
As a last resort, I could make you a patch that would restore the old Exchange2 and email but there is nothing the old email program did that GMail can't do in an almost if not completely identical way.

I've been chewing this over. I don't doubt the gmail will provide the functionality, but I was really hoping to have different notifications, different icons, etc. Clear visual indicators between business and personal.
Been trying to make Outlook work, but yesterday it sucked up 25% of my battery. That's crazy, I don't even know what it's doing that whole time.
I hate to ask you to do anything like a patch. You've already done so much for the Verizon Moto X community (I know that I as convinced that we'd never get root and therefore any kind of decent dev community, but look where we are now!) and I'm sure you are busy.
At the point that I can S-OFF, maybe there a way that I can control my own Exchange2 / 3 fate. I'll have to start looking into that.
Thanks, mikeoswego, keep up all the good work!

I don't know if you follow my thread but I did post yesterday a TWRP flashable zip that restores the stock mail and exchange2, removing exchange3, for the current stagefright patched rom. If you tell me exactly which mofo rom (and patch) your running, it really isn't a big deal to make a patch to put back the email and exchange 2 and I'll post it for others who might want it.

I don't follow it, but I will now.
I still haven't taken the Sunshine plunge yet (have a question about needing to uninstall XPosed), so I'm not ready to use the TWRP images yet.
I think I have to break down and see if you are still willing to create a patch for the 5.1 mofo image... I am using the xt1096-5.1-v3.1g-pkg.7z (base image) with no patches.
For anyone interested, the use of the Outlook app has reduced my battery runtime from ~24 hours to about 10 hours.

I've made the patch but didn't read your post closely. The patch I made is for the current mofo image with the Stagefright patch, xt1096-5.1-23.32-25-5-mofo rather than 3.1g. If you can't upgrade to the latest for some reason, I can make you a patch for 3.1g later tonight.
The instructions to upgrade to the current version are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62791915&postcount=783
I posted the Exchange2/Email patch for that version here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62966407&postcount=836
There is also a patch to removed Xposed in the xt1096-5.1-23.32-25-5-mofo archive if that is an issue when/if you decide to use Sunshine.
I can totally switch to the proper image then apply patches. It will be my first time, but I'm sure I'll manage.
Thanks so much for all your help! This is a most pleasant and refreshing community and you are a large contributor to that. Keep up the great work.

@mikeoswego, you are a lifesaver! I got the newer mofo image patched and flashed, and now I'm back in business with exchange through the stock email app. I am going to a theme park with the family tomorrow, and this means I won't be stuck with a dead phone by 3pm tomorrow but can still check in on work from time to time.
Thanks for everything!
