So I'm trying to flash back to stock on my Captivate so I can put CM7 on it. I'm currently running the latest version of Cognition. The phone is recognized by my computer and adb when it is on, and the odin3 one-click downloader detects it, but as soon as I go into download mode my computer doesn't recognize the device and it doesn't show up on odin. I've tried rebooting the computer and getting to download mode multiple ways but nothing is working. Any ideas?
Are you unplugged, going into download mode, then plugging in the USB?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Tried that, still nothing
Plug usb into pc only, then load odin. After odin loads put the phone in dl mode THEN plug usb into phone. Odin should read it then. Its the only way it would work on my windows 7 64bit.

Still nothing. I don't know what the deal is.
Perhaps trying a different USB port...I think the port needs to be directly wired to the motherboard.
You do not need to flash stock to flash cm7, you just need a kernel on your phone with a custom recovery so that you can flash the efs backup zip prior to flashing the cm7 initial kernel.
Are you using factory cord
have you tried multiple ports
Have you tried reinstalling drivers
Had odin worked for you before
True. But what if he wants to flash back to a 2.2 rom? He still needs dl mode
If I have helped press thanks.

He can't flash cm 7 without odin in either case
Using a non-factory cord, factory one is broken
tried every usb port on my laptop
can't figure out how to reinstall the drivers for the life of me
never used odin before
You sure the cord you are using is a data cord and not just a charging cord

Positive. I've been using it to send files between my computer and my phone. And my phone shows up on odin when its not in download mode.

Well I flashed phoenix unleashed yesterday coming from firefly 2.8. Did everything step by step like I always do like using odin to flash to stock... well anyways after I flashed phoenix unleashed 8.0 I plugged the usb in to mount the sd well it froze on me as soon as I did that and now I can't mount it or get it to recognize with odin in download mode. Win 7 just says unknown device even though I have the drivers installed and have reinstalled em several times. I just can't get it to mount or have odin recognize it. Am I stuck with this rom? Help please.
I had the same thing happen to me, it was recognized while booted but the download mode driver went to crap. UnInstalled, rebooted, installed, rebooted still nothing, went through that cycle a couple times, finally I just restored my pc from an earlier restore point (i create one about once a week) that did the trick.
But you don't need a computer to flash a different rom, boot to recovery wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, go into advanced and wipe dalvik cache, and flash rom like normal, so you aren't STUCK with that rom...

Could just be a bad flash. I suggest that if you like this ROM to reflash it and see if that fixes it. If not, just do as Stud suggested and flash another one. You can dl most of them OTA from their xda tread.
*Also don't forget to clear data/cache/dalvik*
Ok thanks to both of you for a speedy reply will try to flash that way. I was stuck thinking I had to flash using the this is how you flash guide. Well thanks !

I just went through a few post and seems like other ppl had your problem, did you flash while your usb was plugged in? If so that would be why. You have to disconnect the phone before flashing
I would still recommend getting your phone seen by odin, in case you have a bad flash/soft brick and the only option you have is a jig and odin. Try different usb ports, cables, and different computers.
Yea I flashed with the usb cable disconnected. And tried it on another computer and nothing
Usb worked the first time I tried with this rom I tranfered a movie to it and after it transferred it froze. The movie plays fine on it but it froze windows explorer and hasn't worked since than.
ok just went into recovery did wipe data/factory reset , wipe cache partition and wipe dalvik cache. also downloaded firefly 2.7 through sgs tools and flashed it. still a no go on usb connectivity...
Ok i got it to mount and can access the storage on the phone but when i go into download mode my computer says it cannot recognize the device. geez this is frustrating. odin recognizes it while the phone is not in download mode but that does me no good since it has to be in download mode to work.

Have you tried a different port? Also, (re)download the drivers and reset ur comp.
If that doesnt work than idk what to suggest anymore. It could just be that the port on your phone is dead but wouldnt make any sense if you can mount and charge.

Yeah I think you are down to restoring your computer from an earlier point, as I said in post 2, happened to me and that's the only thing that worked.

yea thats what im thinking. Only way i got it to mount was to uninstall the drivers go into safe mode and manually delete all the samsung driver entries in regedit. Which driver is used for download mode?
Ok get this. I did a fresh install of win 7 64-bit loaded the usb drivers for it and all the usb ports are 2.0 except for one 3.0 on the front. Tried connecting to all of the usb ports on the back of the computer still get the usb device not recognized. Tried the three in the front same thing. The only way my computer can see the device is through my Logitech g-15 keyboard usb ports which are 1.0. Its weird! I can mount it with those ports but wont connect in download mode again.
ok i found the problem. Was a bad stock mini usb cable. Used my brothers mini usb cable connected to the back of my pc and it recognized my phone right away even in download mode. Flashed back to stock and flashed pheonixultimate. runs great!
To be clear, it was the cable that came with the phone(also used to charge from walk charger)?

thats correct!
I was looking on Samsung website awhile back,a and several people were having problems with that cable not working as a data cable.
I just had the same kinda issue yesterday.what I ended up havin to do,was reinstall the drivers on my laptop.then with the phone powered off, hold vol up and down at the same time, just like you're tryin to put it in download mode.once in download mode, the computer installed the drivers.but you have to do it after you reinstall the new drivers again.cuz the new drivers recognize your phone as a new device.I think it only installed two drivers when I did it.but it was enough to solve my problem.hope this helps.but who knows.I might be stupid and it wont help you at all.it helped me though

Ive had problems before with connecting USB to my comp. Every time I would try to transfer files to or from my sd to computer windows explorer would freeze and I would have to unplug.
What fixed it for me was installing .NET 4 framework in windows.
Ive got my phone into a boot loop state because I messed up when trying to restore a previous backup of CM7 that I had.
Okay I thought, this is not a problem I will just do a clean flash of something via odin with my phone in download mode. This is where the problem lays. Odin can not see my phone when its in download mode and plugged in via USB! I have flash roms via Odin before so know what I'm doing.
I've tried it on 2 windows 7 64bit laptops and different USB ports but both are the same! could this be a driver issue? I have Kies installed on both and have manually tried installing the driver too.
Other things to note is that I can't get into recovery mode but no problem getting into download. Also when I plug the phone into charge it doesnt come up with the battery symbol but only the circle of rectangles like it is loading the battery symbol which never appears.
Anyone know what is going on?
Sorry for bad english.
I had problem like yours - pc don't recognized my phone (odin too) and shows only battery charge. i tried on 3 different pc's, installed kies, pc studio, drv, tried 2 differnt cables.
And the problem was... Cables

If you are CM7, you may need Nexus S Drivers.
See this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1061946&page=879
Download and extract to folder.
When phone connected, locate it in your computers devive manager and update driver and point to your folder where you extracted for installation.
Thanks spaikas!
I guess I will have to go out and buy a new cable to try that. One thing though is that even when I plug it into the mains power adaptor I still get the circle of rectangles as well as when its plugged into my PC (with the supposedly defective cable). So does this suggest that the circle of rectangles is not caused by a bad cable? but still my cable being bad could be a culprit for odin not seeing it.

Thanks. I have downloaded and extracted the driver. But I can't find my phone in device manager. Does the phone have to be in download mode for windows to be able to see it. Do you know roughly what it would be called?

I can't get into CWM! Is there no way to install the Nexus S driver without having the phone plugged in because otherwise I have no idea what I'm going to do....
It was my cable! Sorry for wasting your time guys but it was just a very unlucky coincidence that my cable must of broke at the same time that I messed up my phone and needed to do a odin flash! Anyway managed to get my hands on another cable and now odin can see my phone!

Hi guys, i know this topic has been talked to death but i literally tried everything. 3 cables, 4 computers. i have 2 captivate and one of them needs to be sent back for repairs, but i cannot restore to stock. The phone is fully working, with access to CWM and download mode, but my computer just wont recognize it. I have to send it back to rogers but there is a huge ATnT load screen on it
did any one find a fix to the usb problem? i just need to use ODIN
OR is there any way to CWM back to stock from CM7, and changing the splash screen?
thanks
edit: forgot to mention that the phone can charge though usb, it gives me the "USB device not recognized" thing on all of my computers
Are you on CM7 right now?
im currently on MIUI but i could flash to CM7 from an external microSD
its the drivers. sec, ill find the ones that solved it for me.

bump, no one has any solutions?
Give this a try
1. On the cell phone, dial the following number: *#7284#
Once the last # is hit, the PhoneUtil application is launched. Choose USB -> Modem and then USB -> PDA mode.
The good mode should be PDA. Even if the mode is PDA, switch to Modem and then back to PDA.
2. Plug the USB cable.

thanks for the reply but CM7 doesnt support USSD from what i've been reading, and does nothing when i type that in
What I had to do to get my recognized by odin was go into download mode and then pull the battery and brick my phone and then connect it to kies and it will repair the drivers then use jig to get into download mode and flash as normal
---------- Post added at 09:34 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:18 PM ----------
I should mention I have done this several times when coming from a cm7 rom with same results
how do you brick the phone if it is not flashing anything
My computer doesn't recognize my phone right now and it is soft bricked. Is this normal or no?
That all depends on what is currently on your screen. If it's the phone>--<computer screen, that's basically like download mode. Otherwise you will probably need to try to boot into recovery or download mode. Add more details and we can come up with a better solution
yeah it is at the phone>--<computer screen. No button combination is working to get it to download mode or recovery. I need a jig. I want to know if my computer will read the phone ones it is in download mode.
It will read it now. Just plug it into Odin or a heimdell oneclick
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
Nope. I tried both of those. My computer is not reading a device. Not even an unknown device. I have tried 2 computers and multiple ports and a second USB cable.
Ya I'm talking about Odin or heimdell...not your computer. Everyone here will tell you it will work and its been done a million times. But ok

I understand u r asking about ur computer recognizing ur phone, but this should still be of some help... Captivate Connection Issues and Download Mode Help.
And if your soft brick/firmware upgrade fail screen looks like this View attachment 857512 (this is pre gingerbread), then it has been reported to be recognized by some in Heimdall and/or Odin as a Download mode screen and therefore they were able to get back to a Stock or otherwise fixed state. But if Odin or Heimdall does not recognize this for you, then u will have to try a Jig.
If it looks like this View attachment 857513 (this is since gingerbread), then it is definitely an alternate Download mode screen and will be recognized by Heimdall and/or Odin and you can get back to a working state.
All either of these screens mean is that your "upgrade failed, so reconnect the phone to pc and try again."
Hi,
I am looking for android 2.3.6 for gt-p1000 gingearbear I can install in recovery mode, because I can't connect my tablet on pc, the CyanogenMod doesn't allow me to connect the tablet to the pc, when I plugged into the pc it starts to load and the pc doesn't indicate to me that USB port has just been used,

You won't find a stock ROM that you can flash from custom recovery.
The reverse is also true, you can't find a custom ROM that you can flash from stock recovery.
Get stock ROM from samfirmware or use overcome GB stock safe v5 (follow my signature).
Put your ran in download mode, and use Odin to flash.
If Odin didn't detect your tab, try reinstall the Samsung USB driver.
All of this is included in the GB-stock-safe-v5 package.

Odin is meant to detect your tab in download mode.
Not while it boots into CM.
From off, hold volume down and power button.
Fire up odin without connecting tab to PC.
Once it is download mode, connect to PC.

I always use odin 1.7
Some uses 1.85.
I don't think it is the odin. It is your USB driver.
You should stop kies. Kill it. Prevent it from starting up. Or even uninstall it.
Remove the USB driver if you know how to.
Reinstall the usb driver again.
Use other machine that never had Samsung driver installed on it before.
You can try heimdall but it is a different software.
Lastly you can use Linux with heimdall, which always works for me.
