...I don't know if the problems are the same and apply to me.
Okay, I rooted the phone and upgraded to cyanogenmod 6...everything worked great (had a few bumps down the road but fixed them and continued on the way). I got passed the g1 splash screen and into the google sign in screen. I sign in but it doesn't connect to servers. I have data and am connected to wifi.
Did I do something wrong? What can I do to pass this?
I searched every where before I decided to post so please if you think that this is a repeat of an older thread, I'm sorry, that was not my intention.
Please help me.

T-mobile...
this is what it says exactly "Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server".
Don't know if it helps.
Thanks
Sound like you do not have a reliable DATA connection. Do you see the EDGE, 3G, etc...?

I don't see the 3G sign but I do see the wifi connection sign, and I do have connection to it...maybe it's not that strong? I'm currently using a wifi spot and am not at home, but shouldn't the 3G just cover where ever I am sorta speak?
you should also activate:
Settings->Account & sync : both background data and auto-sync
try this! i had the same problem times ago

Concur with P4p3r1n0. Also, make sure that your APN setting is there and correctly filled out.
That should have done the trick, where you able to fix it??

Hey guys!
I tried searching the forums on an answer to the question I'm having, but no luck. So.. here goes!
Is there a way to disable GPRS, and have only UMTS (and 3G, HSDPA) connections?
The reason I'm asking this, is that whenever I move into an area without UMTS coverage, it automaticly switches to GPRS. When this happens during a phone call, the call gets dropped! Also, while having a GPRS connection, noone is able to call me, without me noticing.
What I'd like to happen is that when there's no UMTS coverage, there will not be a data connection, at all, not even GPRS. (of course, GSM will be available at all times).
I've tried the utilities Bandswitch and CommMgr Pro (www.commmgrpro.com), but both do not seem to offer this feature.
Any idea's? Thanks in advance!
here you go, this should help( i hope ): Modaco NoData
I guess he'd want it to be automated, so as soon as the radio switches to GSM the connection gets disabled, and when it switches back to UMTS it gets enabled again.
I unfortunately haven't seen anything allowing it so far.
When this happens during a phone call, the call gets dropped!

Can't do much about this, even with no data connection. The radio must disconnect/reconnect from the network to switch mode so the call wil be dropped anyway.
Hey you two, thanks for answering!
Unfortunatly Zee, the NoData utility actually drops the entire connection (3G included).
Maybe it's just not possible.. because to get a 3G/UMTS connection, it starts by making a GPRS connection.. at least, that's how I see it when it's trying to connect.
Still though.. I'm hoping for a way to get this working

No, if your radio is in 3G mode when you establish the connection it should directly connect as 3G without going through GPRS.
It will go to 3G first before switching to HSDPA once a data transfer has started though, maybe that's what you saw.
Ah.. I get it.. thanks Kilrah! So.. it COULD be possible haha..

As mentioned in the thread, if you switch between EDGE/GPRS and 3G, your call and data are both dropped. This is why I stopped doing auto-switch with BandSwitch as I was always getting random call drops as it switched.
ie: I stay on EDGE, but I want to do 3G for a few minutes to download something. Then I get a call. The 10 minute switch timer I set expires, bam, call dropped.

So that's basicly the other way around..
I'd like to avoid EDGE/GPRS all together, my calls not only get dropped when a GPRS connection is established, but also when data is being transferred. In fact, if I'm sending/receiving data on a GPRS connection, people are unable to call me, and I dont even notice.
Yeah.. this is why I really dislike GPRS, and love UMTS

Yep that's normal EDGE behavior, if you have a connection active but no data being transferred at the moment you get a call it will go through, but while data is going through the call gets dropped.

Thanks for confirming that Kilrah, it took me quite a while to figure out why that happens haha.
Will this allow me to set conditions for standard connection and Roaming Connection?
ie. i want to to use my UMTS connection when connected via 3G,
but when roaming, i want it to switch automatically to my alternate connection.
My Carrier : Connection 3services
Roaming : Connection 3netaccess
Is that possible?
So, my internet has been dead for 1 1/2 days now. First hour I though maybe sprint network was down or something? I dunno. But now I cant even get a connection. Calls are still being made, incoming/outgoing. I have The newest fresh rom 2.1, with the new radio. I've checked the settings, all internet connection related is turned on. So whats happening?

=] Get your ass back to Giz. and in the IRC... NOW.
I can verify that this is happening with me as well. Only happens when I try to run wireless tether, my data connections is completely gone for some time, even though data is enabled. I upgraded my friends phone to the sprint leaked version (no root required) and she too is ha ving problems w/ her data connection. Any ideas?
Tried on DamageControl 2.08 as well as Fresh 2.0d same outcome w/ the wireless tether, as soon as the it connects it completely shuts off the data connection in my phone. Wireless tether worked prior to this happening.
Well you see, its like this. The internet... well, its not a big truck. Its not something you just DUMP something on. The internet.. its a series of tubes!
JK. Seriously though, toggling airplane mode on and off should fix you right up.
Thanks a lot, definitely resets the data connection for the phone. Any tips to get wireless tether to work properly again ?

There have been a few discussions about this, but I have yet to find a solution that works for me...
I flashed CM6 today and now I'm finding that when I enable wifi, my 3g data connection is lost. Not sure this is really a CM problem, I just want to find a fix.
My setup:
Nexus One - CM6.RC1 - FRF91

what do you mean it's lost.. when you're turning Wifi on, that's the whole point (that you want to use your Wifi connection for data, and not your mobile 3G data.) Maybe I'm not understanding you?

Even with wifi on you still need 3g data to send and receive MMS. I can't replicate this problem, though, so I'm afraid I'm not much help. All I can suggest is trying a full wipe of everything but battery and rotate stats and try to flash it again. See if that helps.
It works fine for me. Are you sure you are confussing not having both icons in the notification bar with 3g being off?
I answered this question a few months ago too.
Your 3g is not lost, it just hides the icon. Go into settings and look what network you are still connected to for yourself, it will still say 3g. If you were to send or receive an mms the 3g icon would briefly pop up, send the message, then disappear. Your phone is working just fine
thanks for the help... @roger, you are correct, i didn't realize that the icon was hidden vs. actually turned off, nor did i think to go check the actual service rather than rely on the icon
I use public wifi in my school. I registered it and it s connected every time i turn it on. I have a good speed(58Mbps), OPEN security and a IP address. I used an app to moniter the data useage and there is a small amount of data use when i keep the wifi connected.
ANYONE KNOWS WHY??
THANKS A LOT.
ok not sure I am following you.
in the title you say wifi is not working yet you say you have a IP and it is connected then you say that you see data passed. So what is not working?
When you have wifi on at school can you browse the web?
Were is the data that you see 3G or wifi?
Why do you think that wifi is not working?
are you getting errors?
guess I am saying we need more to go on here. Details man we need details.
If I had to guess
If the small amount of data that you see is in 3G then that may be the phone "signing out" of 3G
If the data is on wifi then it is the phone registering on the network.
but still need more details.

Okey, I should not say wifi is not working. It is connected for sure, but when i use the browser or the market or any app that requires internet connection it never works. It does not show web page, app store content or anything from the internet. Maybe it is my phone? this phone works in some other spot in my school, but no way to use wifi in my own dorm.

and also I turn off 3G when I have wifi, you know some widgets can help turning off 3G, so I can save some data. It is just the wifi data count that shows a data use.
I am pretty sure it is this phone s problem. I just got my ipod touch and I test the wifi on itouch. Touch works perfect. Why this good looking captivate has so many problems?

Hello all,
Recently i went to make a hotspot for my cars radio since the WIFI antenna doesn't get a good signal and i did not have the option to share WIFI. The only way i would be able to make a hotspot was to add it to my plan.. Which im not gonna do obviously since i only use it very often... Was this feature removed? I'm running Android 10 on ATT. It worked a few weeks ago... Any help?
Maybe some screenshot can help the other to answer for your problem

if youre running stock firmware, it doesnt shock me that your providers CSC locked out the native wifi sharing. If you flash the U1 firmware for your device (ubranded, directly from Samsung) then youll have that option again. I did that exact same thing on my S9

2 questions...
1. Where can i find these "u1 unbranded" firmware?
2. Would this affect anything on my phone from my provider? such as data.
Thanks in advance!

Sorry... you're right a SS would of been useful.
As you can see no selection for WiFi share. Also, i need to disable WiFi in order to hotspot now.
IT is there, just a bit hidden...
Goto Settings... Connections... Mobile Hotspot and Tethering..top on the left of the Mobile Hotspot Toggle line (just tap the M of Mobile)... click on the 3 vertical dots on the top right...... voila... Wi-fi Sharing shows up!!!

yes, you have to turn off wi-fi before you can run your own hotspot, it probably just did it without alerting you to it before. These devices only have 1 wifi radio and it cant use one wifi while producing its own also
here is the U1 firmware should you decide to flash it. doesnt sound like its strictly necessary as others might have found a solution for you, but here it is anyways

What is the benefit (besides getting rid of bloat on the phone from ATT) for using the u1 firmware?

Since the most recent Samsung update I haven't been able to use hotspot either. I'm hoping to find a way to downgrade.
