Hi
Everybody talk about changing the VM heap value, but... what is the difference after changing it? What about increase its value? And decrease it?
On the CM7 thread adamz667 post this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15065093&postcount=4569
Anyone can confirm that?
Thanks
Increasing cm heap means that apps can use more memory which makes them run faster but then since tbey use up more mem u will have less free memory.

Here you got some definition:
VM Heap Size
The heap is an area of dynamic memory allocated to programs. With a larger heap size, there is more memory for the program and the garbage collector can run more efficiently. Therefore, it is possible to get better performance by setting a larger VM heap size.
However, if you set it too high, you can run out of free memory which can trigger swapping which will degrade performance. Therefore the VM setting is a trade-off.
The optimal value will depend on the RAM on the device as well as the programs and usage patterns, therefore the optimal setting can often only be determined by the user experimentally.
Default value: varies between devices

Thanks adam, but your post on CM thread was a good theory and this definition it's opposite to your post (a this new one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15092265&postcount=4582)
I only want to know what value use without have to try all of them during days of testing...
Thanks

I have tested all of them today and the best results was with 16mb.
How I was testing it?
Shadow Guardian HD is a very heavy game for MM's ram memory. So I've tested every vm heap size on one and the same level of SGHD, with the same run environment and game was most playable on 16mb (no freezes, reboots, no returns to home screen).
Really 16mb. Which rom? And how far did you get in the game?

I am using CM7rc10 (14.06.2011) I am now in 4th episode (level?) - Medusa Sanctuary.
That is very very interesting. I'm gonna have to give cm7 another chance. Maybe rc10 is a lot better than rc4 (last cm7 I tried)

i also have good performance with 16m tried most settings from extremely large to extremely small...
also png optimized most apps again and again... (which decreased the size of the apps by almost 10mb again - quite sure that it does not make much of a difference)
don't have any app locked in memory and only one homescreen with adw ex without widgets...
dunno till now i have not experienced any issues with lost sms or phone calls...
but i'm aware of that it could happen with my settings so it needs more testing, jit turned off etc. phone works like a charm since i switched from froyomod a week ago or so.

Are you sure u tried 16 mb. Because I just tried shadow guardian on cm7 rc10 with ur settings and zepplinrox supercharger on balance and tbh it was rather language at times

I've tried jit off and VM heat on 16MB but not get any result.
The launcher was freezing 3 or 4 times, and all games get a minimal improve: 3 seconds more until FC.
I'm testing with: Asphalt 6 and Brothers In Arms 2 (Gameloft games) and Age of Wind v2.2. All versions for MM, with people that play them on stock rom.

well as i said i do not use that memory intensive apps.
(i think my biggest apps are maps and the browser, and the browser barely goes beyond 30mb, so 2 vm's with 16mb, instead of 2 with 24. but most apps stay below 10mb so i think for my use it is a good solution)
also i debloated the rom massively and replaced most system apps with smaller ones.
cm7 performs very well with this settings, at least for me. (no redraws, no lags in ui no freezes etc...)
like i said i don't use games on my stone
edit: only genie news & weather app reloads often but i think it simply has a high priority.

That is quite interesting. On ho no I
And 20mb with balanced 3 supercharger works great. But not so well on 16mb

I had tried 16mb weeks ago when somebody suggested it.
That lasted about 5 minutes.
Scrolling between adw screens was brutally choppy.
Swipe finger, wait, look at watch, then bam - the screen suddenly decides to quickly jump to the next screen...

I've got the same with 12mb vm heap. But when I use 16mb everything works fine on CM7 and HO!NO! CM7. Maybe it depends on rom/apps you use and your own configuration.
I guess.
But I'm used to fast, smooth and lots of free ram no matter what rom I'm using

yeah 12mb is to small... experienced some errors with it too.
i have to say that for me everyhing between 16 and 32 mb seems to do not do much of a difference, but with 32mb my system uses some more RAM right after boot.
after a while it usally uses less (around 80-90mb sometimes less, sometimes more) so i normally have around 60mb free RAM, which seems to be enough.
i'm out of this discussion for now, but i have to say that i rly think ur VM Heap settings should match the apps u use.
so just try different settings.
@Zeppe
yay never experienced that, but i use only one Homescreen anyway. and ADWEX is rly memory friendly : )

For the life of me, I can not find this app. Google search is letting me down, for once.
I want to be able to force an app to run at a lower resolution, mainly for performance reasons since some apps aren't very fast at the 2560x1600 resolution of this tablet.
Also curious if the app can help with apps that don't scale to full-screen, like Let's Golf 3 that is stuck in a little 800x480 section of the screen.

You can use wm in a terminal. Search for that.
Will this actually improve performance? Or will it make no difference because the physical number of pixels that need to be shifted around is the same?

It will be down-scaling the image, while it does improve render performance, its not the same as running is nativley at a lower reolution. Same as what ms is doing to the xbox one...
Hi, i just install cm10.1 and it looks so good, but i have a trick from my last phone that was to change the dpi to lower for have a nice better resolution, for example i changed my s3 mini dpi from 240 to 15o and it looks good, but i dont know if this can damage my phone, so can you help me? i will lose my phone if i change the dpi?
Thanks, bye
How can a lower DPI look better?

Cause, when you have a lower dpi, the things on screen look smaller and give an impression of a high resolution, i changed cause the things are so bigger, and i dont like that i prefer Little things.
Look here is a nice example of it: http://www.android-hilfe.de/attachm...other-density-changer-200-320-dpi-preview.png
You can see that in the 240dpi things look smaller but in 320 dpi are bigger.
Another example: http://thecellularguru.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/appbrain-lcddensity-screen-before-after.jpg
I think it looks better with the lower dpi.
I am using 210 dpi for some time.
On mine previous phones I had changed it also. It is not possible to damage the phone with this change.
If you have problems with starting system, just restore build.prop file

And if i use lower tan you?, im using it on 150 dpi, this will make some negative changes?
Thanks bye

If phone is capable to display such dpi and it is readable for your eyes than I think it is OK and has no other negative aspect

i haven't read the comments yet. i don't know what others told you.
i am using the phone with 190 DPI and it is awesome. i haven't encountered with any problems, i am playing games too. but when you decrease dpi in stock roms there would be some problems like decreased in size of contacts or keypad . but on the custom roms there won't be any problems..

Yeah, i notice that with my last phone (Galaxy mini 2) when i was on stock and change the dpi, i cannot enter to play store or make calls cause the dial pad make forcé close, and some apps didnt work, also the stock launcher make forcé close, but i do it on cyanogenmod and it looks great, i mean problems maybe if the screen can damage or maybe the gpu burns, cause i read that when you change the dpi the gpu forces to show more things on screen, so i think for that reason i see some animations slow.
Thanks, sorry for my english
I apologize if this has been covered all ready. The search function is not the greatest but what I did search for did not yield any results.
Has anyone had any luck with this app?

Seems like it'd be excellent for the ovation to help with game performance. 1920x1280 is a lot of pixels for this old girl to push.
Jus looking for any testimony!

If you looked at it closely you will see that it requires root access. You do not say which operating system you are running. If you have stock, be careful how you set up root. If you do it improperly the device will reset itself when the app runs. If you are running a rooted CM version it should work ok, but I have no experience with it.

I have a Nook HD, not an HD+ but I think my experience should still help you out...Currently on CM11.
Using Plants vs Zombies 2 as an example with the default Nook HD resolution of 1440 x 900, I was at less than 10 frames per second on the 'World Map' using FPS METER ROOT application to see the FPS and less than 25 frames during gameplay. After lowering the resolution to 1024 x 600 (Kindle Fire resolution) my FPS jumped on the world map to a solid 30 FPS and 50+ fps during gameplay so it definitely does help (at least for PvZ 2).
Hello, i come from Indonesia [emoji1]
May I ask a question, I know that xperia z has adreno 320 GPU, that clocked max 400 mhz, it seems this GPU is one of the best..
I use official 5.1.1, and I have used from 4.1 to 5.1, why game line let's get rich is seems bit laggy, especially when a little hot?
Any one can improve the graphics?
My brother uses on android one that use mediatek, it's fine to play this game [emoji25] ..

Didn't encounter such problems. There are occasional lags here and there, but its mostly because of game is self(crappy coding, lack of optimization, or use loots of totally useless light/shadow effects to hide bad models and textures).
But on my XZ I have no real problem with that, I tried most of games, Real Racing 3 load few years and after that it lag here and there, but its playable.
Even if I dont like PC Minecraft, MC pocked edition is my only paid game that bought and with everything on high its work really nice.
Did you tried changing GPU/CPU settings i Programmer Options in settings? (Graphi Acceleration/force GPU etc)
And yes, its gonna be hot as hell, my record is 78*C after that its FC most of apps, and when it reach more it restart phone... On summer in Spain I could play games maybe for 20min because I literally could not hold my own phone in hands xD
Yeah, maybe software optimization, but I think it's still cpu or gpu problem, I stated that android one that has mediatek with same clock gpu 400 mhz, can run this games so smooth ?..

But it if I know good Android One devices don't have FHD display. If you want better perfomance change resolution to 1280x720 and DPI to 320.
I recommend 360-380, after almost 5 years of playing with DPI on every device, 360 looks best on XZ, not that big as stock 480 and still not that small to squeeze face to screen to read something.
But to be honest changing DPI dont give anything in terms of performance, unlike resolution...
For changing resoultion I recommend this app(root of course is must have):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nomone.resolution_changer&hl
Didnt had any bootloop with it.
But be warned that changing res can mess your app. Its best to use after fresh installation OR after reseting apps/games settings.
Also its can mess soft keys(bottom nav buttons) and Stock Launcher. So its better to use custom one(I recommend Aviate launcher. clean, fast and with nice category tab).
I will try change resolution n DPI, let's see what it goes..
Thanks for your answer ?
