DO NOT use ROM manager, it was created with the best of intentions but ultimately causes more problems than it helps with.

whoah.....this is false!
ROM manager has been around a lot longer than the captivate has.....and it works great on other android devices that ARENT samsung
rom manager is PERFECT for stock roms.
rom manager is bad when you have ClockworkMod built into the kernel already.!
ridethelight is on a bad roll today.
So how do i know if its built in?
Perfect 3g..little to no edge.. live in edge area.. bought the phone from a craigslist user needless to say in a 3g area.
About phone :
2.1 js5/I900 zsjpg
Kernel version- 2.6.32.9
[email protected] #27
Build#phoenix 6.0 js5..
Any suggestions ?
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
you would check out the page for your kernel but yes it does have it.
and looking at your rom... ect. you have already flashed a rom/kernel/modem (all in one) package.
so ya go back to post 3 instructions. also to get into recovery just long press the powerbutton then press 'recovery' it is easier than the button method in post 3.
Ok thanks alot. U all have been a big help !

I want to know if anyone out there knows how to port a rom from the Samsung vibrant. The rom is called simply galaxy v2.7.2, it is a very fast rom. Here is the link:http://www.multiupload.com/PJIZ8D3PT6
Please reply back ASAP and thank you in advance
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
not sure if its the same rom or not but there already is a simply galaxy for the captivate, you would have to see who makes each rom
Its not to difficult to get one to work but it breaks a few features between the two phones i think
Thank you but I don't think the rom your talking about is completely stable. Plus the rom that I posted was constantly updated. Please if you can port, then let me know. Or can you find someone who can.

'porting' it would require you to download the rom zip
open rom zip with 7zip (do not extract)
open up a kernel zip that you want to use (must match 2.1, 2.2, or 2.3 to corresponding rom version)
drag n drop zImage from the kernel zip into the updates folder in the rom zip
do the same thing with modem.bin file from a modem zip
if you want the phone to be recognized as an sgh-i897 you need to open up /system/build.prop with notepad (i use notepad++ for everything on windows boxes) and make all references to T959 say i897

Hey guys...
I am a newbie who successfully rooted & installed cognition
everything seemed fine until I flashed a theme called
"CirclesMod_SGS2_Cognition_107blue-signed"
When I turn on my phone, AT&T, cognition, and Galaxy S show up
and then the screen goes black and phone just vibrates once or twice in a while...
My phone DOES go into Downloading... screen
I am not sure what my situation is... I could not find anything like this in this forum.
Help this newbie solve the problem..?
Ok so im the only one this late...bear with me kus im on my phone and i cant refer you to links...first of all...if you CAN go into download there is nothing to worry about...search on xda for "odin one click" download the package once you find it. After run the application and plug in your phone in download mode..you will see that the computer has recognized your phone when in the app thre is a little yellow box in the top left corner...after that hit start in the app and wait for a while until it reboots back to stock..hope it helps

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
If you can get in to recovery you can just reflash that rom (assuming you have the .zip on your SD). Also its usually a good idea to have a stock them for your phone on your SD when you are trying out themes. Something in the framework isn't compatible, but if it really is a SGS II theme dosen't suprise me.
sigh.. i passed out and just fixed it
thanks guys!
going into recovery mode and reflashing the rom did it!
Hi I was just wondering if you guys knew some cool stuff to do with a rooted phone. Is it possible to theme a stock ROM? Also what's the deal with overclocking and I/O scheduling? Thanks in advance
Sent from my SGH-I896 using XDA App
Yes you can theme a stock rom. And overclocking can only happen with a kernel that is ready to support it.
Keep reading, just make sure you build numbers match

So after I root my wifes captivate with super one click, I can install current nightly with google add on through Rom manager? She had an HTC aria running current nightly and I had to do it always through CWM. Which is not a problem. its because ROM manager didn't work with HTC arias. A little buggy here and there. But I heard its allot easier through ROM manager. But is it safe? Thxs guys.

rom manager is terrible on the galaxy s phones
Thanks. good to know. I'll be doing it from CWM then.
i am not knocking koush and all those involved with ROM manager. i bought the premium version for my other phones, and i love it, but i have to blame samsung and their method of recovery. rom manager just doesnt play well with galaxy s phones. it 'sort of' works once you have CM7 installed. again, its not rom managers fault, its the crappy recovery we have to deal with.
What would be the easiest way to theme a stock ROM? Things like notification pulldown, status bar, battery icons, lockscreen, etc.

find and read the million already written tutorials.read the new user guide.
read read read.
oh and to your original question....
why in hell would you root if you dont know what to do with root?
that kind of methodology will end up giving you a 400$ paperweight.

ANY MODERATOR will tell you XDA is NOT a place to spoon feed babies.it is a community development forum FOR DEVELOPING. it is NOT a "help me do this" fourm.
xda is not a place to "make your phone cool" it is a place of learning and developing.
I rooted for several reasons. I just asked to see what other people were doing with their phones. Anyways, alright next time I'll just go post somewhere else where they hopefully don't mind "spoon feeding babies."

Personally, i stay away from ROM Manager, because CWM works better for me anyways, and i can guarantee that i know EXACTLY whats going on while its flashing...plus ROM Manager, like stated before, SUCKS on Galaxy S devices..
I heard from a thread that using rom manager bricks this phone if you have a partitition and I'd bought the premium version before partitioning my sd card, just want to ask, is this true?
Sent from my GT-S5830 using xda app-developers app
Why would u use that - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1942957 !!!
Go on CWM, its healthier for our Ace!
It has nothing to do with having a partition or not.
It bricks the phone anyways. Better remove that app, its dangerous if you don't know what functions of it can be used safely.
Oh, so the whole thing bricks it? Why is that, also I am using cwm anyways

Mostly the motherboard i think, people reported that they had to get new a motherboard installed in order to unbrick it.
Hmm, that's confused me, I thought it would have broke it system wise. I know how to flash, root, etc, but I'm not exactly sure how they all work, but I thought that flashing just overwrit the system+os. So two questions, when you root/flash does that interact with the hardware in anyway and how?

Rom manager ... flashes new recovery ... with wrong mounting points ... making your phone useless it will be like having the light switch of your kitchen in your bed room and your bed room light switch on your attic ... know what i mean? Nothing will work !! Since the phone will change the mp to points that dont exist on your phone.
Just flash cwm from stock recovery or from odin and you'll be ok
