Your putting it on the internal sd. You have to navigate to _external sd and place the file there. Sorry for bad explanation.. im on the toilet

i put it on the internal and external and wouldn't pick either up,i cant navigate to external sd

Try removing and re-inserting the sd card. If it fails, try it while phone is off

E:cant mount /sdcard

ok sorted now thanks man

Glad it worked out for you.

You need to use the right CWM version. The latest CWM (5.0.2.0) provided by ROM manager (see market), for example, uses the external SD as default.
Sorry for hijacking the thread
But how to backup to the internal using CWM5? I cannot even the mount the Internal SD.

What happens if you start CWM with the external SD taken out?
(Do you mean you cannot mount the internal via adb while in CWM?)

There have been a lot of problems with ext file systems on the sd cards and mounting in the recovery. Some claiming it to be unsupported other that it works. Only thing you can do is try to make the partition with different tools. For example mkfs.ext2, gparted, different windows tools etc. Also different sd cards if you have.
Hope it helps.

Yes, you can find them here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-1098745.html
If you need v5 you could also try to mount the internal SD manually in CWM via adb shell and the following commands:
umount /sdcard
mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p9 /sdcard
^Thanks guys! Its working
Let me try ....
May I know, where to set Ext SD card as default, inside the ClockworkMod Recovery or the Rom Manager inside set it ?
i just bought and installed rom manager from market last night and when i did backup of my current bell 2.3.4 rom, looked on ext sd, not there, thought b/u didn't worklooked on int storage, there it was? how do i change settings to ext... looked for 30min. thank-you for any help
mine saves backups to internal. but only finds backups from external, so I must move files to backup.
My clockwork goes like this
-launch backup from application in use mode, it saves backups on internal
-manually enter recovery and launch backup, it saves on external

[Q] SD Card Who?

My Samsung captivate is not seeing External SD cards... anything i can do so it can see

Under Settings, under Storage there is the option.
Be sure to save ur stuff from that external sd card to ur pc first, then format it.

Probably something with the ROM. I always had problems with sd cards on cm7 and both the ics builds. Kept losing the card everytime the phone went to sleep.
Now I'm on stock kk4 rom and its still not showing up...

No offense, I am only trying to cover the bases. But is ur external sd card being recognized under Menu/Settings/SD card and phone storage/SD card ?? And if so, is it mounted ??
Also, is the directory path /sdcard/external_sd ?? (u can look at My Files in the app drawer and see)

Update
I kept having this problem on kb2 and jf6. I swapped the card for one that had about 3gb of stuff on it and no more problems. Either my first card is bad, or it needs to have some stuff on it.

try reinserting the sd card, clean the card slot..
if not
try to format it through a card reader and check whether it works.
if the card reader can detect the sd card you should try by resetting the phone.
Click thanks button if you value my reply :-D

The card slot is pretty sensitive, mine popped loose internally from tossing it on the couch. Kasvinda's advice is probably right on target
i can see my pics all the stuff on the card but when i try to download song or something keep saying need sd card
I had this problem the last time I attempted to install a ROM, which had failed.
The way I fixed it, I had to reformat the memory card in my computer, then in the settings menu.
You can still make a quick backup to the desktop at that. So you really lose nothing.
Can any one explain me how to format The sd card without loosing stuff

If you have anything on the SD card, you can transfer the contents to a PC and reformat the card using:
System Settings > Storage > Erase SD card
You can copy-back whatever you need from the PC.
That should set everything back to where it needs to be.

Plz help be what should I do to recover my files from that SD card some of them are very important

As your SD Card wont mount in your Phone and your PC I think its a problem of your SD Card and you will have to format it anyway After formatting try to recover the deleted files using a recovery software like this. I am not 100% sure of success. But I dont think you have any other choice. Good Luck and hope it helps.
