Hey guys! Happy Easter!
I've been doing research on setting up my Google Voice number on my Captivate, and after months, I've had absolutely no luck. Everything I've found pertaining to the set up is severely outdated and does not work.
I was wondering if there are any Canadians out there TODAY, that have gotten Google Voice to work on their phone and using their Google number can make free calls within North America via their Android device?
Thanks!
no USA only
Check out GrooVe IP app for android, I've used it a few times on my Samsung Captivate and works like a charm. Obviously you will have to get a US based number or an Alberta number (I believe that's the only place in Canada right now that supports google voice). The sounds is a bit digital, but a small price to pay for free long distance. You will need a google voice account obviously. Hopes this helps, I've been searching for suitable workarounds for years and finally someone came up with one.

The phone doesn't just stop powering on after you cancel your service.
There are some illegal things you could do to bring it to another carrier... you can always use Data on wifi. I have read of some people using it for a simple PDA/Media player when they are done with it.
I for one am 100% happy with sprints customer service and cell service. Updating the phone could have happened quicker, but hey what do you do.
They have yet to do me wrong. Best cell company I have ever worked with and a heck of a good price.
When I left Verizon and told them I was going to Sprint and told them the price, the retentions department didn't even put up a fight because they knew they couldn't touch Sprints price.
EDIT:
You may be able to use Google Voice over Wifi to place calls, but I am not sure. I doubt you would be able to recieve them since the registered phone number would be disconnected.
And my tethering with Spint is 3 times faster than it was with Verizon, and I acutally paid verizon the extra 15 a month for it....huge waste.
you could use skype to make calls over wifi
otherwise you will just have a PDA

That's a no-go Ghost Ryder. I'm currently service-less and Google Voice won't route over Wifi for calls, SMS will however. Now, if you set up the proper SIP accounts, you can use your Google Voice account through those SIPs to make and receive calls via Sipdroid. Google will pull up how-to's.
As for those lesser than legal matters, that's what I'm about to do myself. Ever done it first hand?

Nope, but it doesn't look too complicated from what I have seen.
Depending on who you flash too MMS may recieve but not send, and Data may/not work.
Seems like some poeple are using better cut to route proxy info stuff through opera to achieve data.
I went through the same type of thing when I went from my touch pro to the hero. I still wanted to use my touch pro as a dedicated gps since at the time there werent any decent ones available on android. anyways, I had then went and set up a similar thing for making calls via the wifi using GV, sipgate, and I believe it was fring....I forget. Basically I would go on my phone browser to google voice, initiate the call from the website, then fring would ring on my touch pro and finish connecting the call. lawl, I just set up my brother's fiance's phone to do that since she is going to Germany for the summer this weekend...so she and my bro can talk for free (though she needs wifi which her dorm over there will have)
Ya, I definitely hear ya about Sprint.....it's funny, I get so so service in my house, yet about 2 miles down the road is a sprint store and as soon as I pull out onto the main drag BAAAAAM insta full signal >.<
As annoyed as I am I will not go back to verizon......way to rich for my blood LOL.
Here is a quick how to for the easiest way to accomplish the free calls thing via wifi. It's a little dated but the info is still good me thinks. The only thing is that you'd have to go to google.com/voice on your phone and (thankfully having all contacts synced to google) initiate the call/sms from there. To get it so you can actually dial out from the phone would require ALOT more configuring and can be annoying. So try this first, make sure it works and then if you want to get more jiggy with it, then figure out the whole "SIPSORCERY.com" thingy.
Good luck

Thank You i am going to try and run the sipdroid and google voice idea i kinda wish there was a app too pick up a wi fi signal with increase strenght so i can use my phone everywhere instead of just home and local buisnesses lol. If you have any ideas to pick up further signals or wifi everywhere let me know also if you have and more ideas on the talk for free let me know thank you.
no dice there my friend haha, here is a thought. think of the phone as a cordless phone for home also, just keep in mind that the audio quality isn't going to be 100%. There will be a delay, there will be some compression artifacts, but hey at least its a free alternative to home phone right?
EDIT: being in a strong wifi environment will DEFINITELY help with quality as it has more umph to work with
i noticed when i read the how to guide u posted thaqt airplane mode will disable the cdma radio did it work so i can keep my battery lol?
heh, not certain. like I said, it's dated stuff not sure how to have only wifi on.

Well I'm actually not switching carriers. I was on a family plan, then a divorce hits, and everyone is refusing to pay the delinquent bill - point being, my phone is tied to that account and can't be used on any other account until the bill is paid. So, I'm hoping to sprinkle some voodoo magic on my Hero, then slap it on a new account with the same carrier.
I dont see why you dont convert the phone over to cricket service (if you have it) and just pay 35 dollars for talk and web. I mean minus well right?
I know there is a work around for euro version of galaxy tab and the sim based versions to allow for dialer. Now personally i have the VZW version of the tab that I would like to possibly flash the tab to cricket for use with 3g and voice and i know they will allow this as cricket doesnt give a crap lol!
I have looked around for last couple days to see if there was a dailer enabler or anyway to get in to the pst settings ive found cupple blurbs about using the notepad. But nothing solid any points in the right direction or even a all out answer would be highly appreciated.
I don't think there's any "workaround" for the Euro Tabs when it comes to the phone functionality. The feature is there and works right out of the box. I do believe there has been success stories of people getting the phone to work on their US Tabs via the flashing of custom firmware and drivers though. Try searching for terms such as "getting phone to work on Verizon Tab" and the like, should be able to find something.
you'd need a cdma version. I've searched all over google for someone that's been flashing to cricket and got squat. I'd like to do it!
ya ive done numerous searches and to no avail i think the reason people are not working on this is because verizon will not allow you to use voice but for me i dont want voice through verizon i want to use cricket and i know 100% sure they will support 3g and voice for tab if you could add dialer and change pst settings
seems this threads dead but no sense in starting a new one when this ones prefectly fine im still looking for any information other than the generic sipdroid and skype answer the actual dialer etc.
Yeah, I would really like the dialer working. And the call log...
SIPdroid dialer doesn't quite cut it, and also it's blocked directly.
Hey Devs I could really use your help in this matter. Here is the deal, I would like to find a way to be able to make free phone calls using my Captivate while deployed to Iraq/Kuwait. I will be leaving soon and would like some help with a "be all" solution. I use ATT but I don't think that really matters for what I am wanting to accomplish. I have searched all over the internet and I see a bunch of way to do this...in USA. I can't seem to find a way that will work in Iraq. I have tried to use a combo of Sipgate + Google Voice but I read somewhere that google voice only works in USA and the steps that are used appear to be for a past version of the phone app and i can't seem to get it to work correctly. I don't have a lot of time to try and figure this out because I leave very soon. If anybody knows of the steps needed to allow free cell phone calls over Wifi in the middle east, please help me out.
I know I can use Skype and that is the preferred way but that means that my all my friends and family will have to be defendant on a computer or a smart phone. I don't want that, I would like to be able to call any number on any phone over Wifi.

Skype can call mobile and land lines. You just need to have credit. I know its not free. But there really is no free way to make calls over wi-fi.
**Edit: at least not any good means.
Google Voice only really works to US *numbers*, but the free inbound you get from Sipgate One is a US number, so it works.
The only problem is latency and variable call quality, but if you're half a world away people should be understanding...
For apps I suggest Xinlu's Google Voice Callback and CSipSimple.
Ummm ive been to kuwait and the wifi over there is not good enough to be making calls on ur phone via wifi best bet is skype or other services and or just get a local sim card over there and make cell calls and also u should just use the free dsn lines they have over there.

Hey guys, bare with me here, I've searched all over the forums and have been chasing a golden goose on Google for the passed 10 hours (not including the handful of research over the passed week). I have a 2 year agreement with Verizon Wireless when I got my Galaxy Nexus. 1 month later I tried using it as a GPS on my motorcycle, and the mount I got for it didn't work.... thus it flew off as soon as I got onto the highway and was destroyed. Didn't have insurance, I have no idea why I didn't opt for that. Needless to say there's no way in hell I'm going to pay $650 for another. So I ended up getting a used 4G LTE Galaxy Tab I was hoping to replace my Netbook (for remoting into my home PC) as well as the Nexus. I know Google Voice allows you to make calls, but you have to adopt their number. Or, if you want to use your own number, it has to *call* your number first to which you need to answer from your own cell phone every time you make an outbound call. Receiving calls, however, would be as simple as forwarding all my calls to the Google Voice number I've been researching sipdroid but either I'm just going numb from all the reading I've been doing recently or it doesn't clearly explain if it can use your existing mobile cell number. I tried configuring it in what was probably a pretty rough fashion, created a sip account, etc... but where I input my mobile number isn't clear. Sipdroid probably isn't even what I'm looking for. Anyway, I have a 10 year old Verizon flip phone that I'm stuck carrying around every time I have to make calls and text with, along with my 4G Tab. If you folks could help me figure out how to get this put on the tab, is would be greatly appreciated.
First, this is a forum for Galaxy Tab 7" original.
Second, don't post a "Q" in general section.
Thirdly, SIP account credential does not need to correspond to a phone number. At the provider end it does but your "registration" or auth id does not usually match the DID number.
(sorry I don't know about Google Voice, but I use SIPDroid to connect to my SIP provider)

Not sure if this affect others but with Verizon not having the Advance Call 1.0 is becoming harder for me to live without... Plus I am on 3G only although there are some VZW N6 users who get LTE but I still don't think they can talk and use data together?
So coming from a wonderful rooted Note 3 on VZW, I am an IT Engineer and travel a lot for my job. With the Note 3, I
>> Travel and use device for GPS solely. But using other data phone activities while GPS is active
>> When traveling I need to answer support calls if a server goes down and this can be while driving using GPS. If so then I need voice, data & GPS
>> Long conference calls avg time 1 hr so to be able to use web, text, data while on a call is a need. Many times i am traveling not sitting at a desk need phone
I adore the N6 have it rooted and works well but today another day of travel I was using GPS but needed web to find product info, can't. Also recently was on a long business conf call and wife texted a urgent question but could not send a text back due to being on a bus call, etc. etc.. Same happened once when I was on GPS and text would not send...thought that was strange
I want to keep the phone but the need for production is weighing heavy on me and I did not realize how import LTE or I should say Advance Call 1.0 was important and needed for my day to day business & job
Any of you in this boat where the N6 is great but being early adopters is killing your need for voice and data both together?
My assumption this is a VZW only issue and not for other carriers they can do both together?
Has anyone refunded their N6 and just keeping a watch on how the N6 progress?
Hope soon VZW will add Advance Call for N6 or someone can cook it in a rom but curious of others thoughts who may be in a similar pinch?
I don't think there will be carrier specific updates. I think Google will enable this and WiFi calling in February with the 5.1 update.

Would be nice if Google would do so just the timeline and the "if" factor is killing me otherwise a great phone...
Thx

"'In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." so with that being said we may never know until its released. I have seen it mentioned on here several times with regards to WiFi calling, so one can assume that VoLTE will follow suit.
