Well flashing there is only ONE way ? With CWM (either the 2 or 3). Or you could do it with adb. (or try your luck with root explorer (not recommended))
And there is also 2 versions there odexed and deodexed so depends which rom you has. But if you have a custom one, then look in the corresponding thread to that.
Also we are speaking about gingerbread right? . And if you looked into the themes and apps subforum here, you would find all what you need
what is cwm and how do i use it ? to flash these gb files
What rom you have? Also what kernel? Cuz for some reason I get the feeling you have a froyo rom and you wanna push gingerbread stuff on it.

lol i aint that much of a noob i got jvb xee rooted cr root applied lagfix
but i want the nexus s notification bar and the crt off animation i have all the files
Ok, I guess you mean CF root. So just go into his CWM app. And reboot into CWM (recovery). There go into install zip > choose zip from sd card etc. And choose the zip containing the theme you want. Do a backup before cuz you might screw up on the files (there arent so many themes for JVK and are there any for JVB?)
What I did was to install Ramads deodexed rom (disable the "lagfix"). And then ocks deodexed theme for JVK. Links are in my signature (first row).
I dont like someone saying lagfix . There is no lag to fix. You just change the fs to something else (maybe better in some ways)
lol thanks

i have gingerbread XXJVP. i rooted my phone and for that i have CF kernel.
now i tried to install this theme. thats why i installed Supercurio's kernel. and this theme works. but if i want to install other themes, like this one here , my phone stuck at startup, i think which is called bootlaps(i am getting used to these words )
whats wrong in my procedure?
when i get this problem, this is i how get back in normal. i flash the filesystem file with heimdall. and it gets to original theme with all settings ok. is there any other easy way to get back?
please any expert help me.
you shouldnt mix various mods and you should read the instructions of each mod very good. you can ask the developer of the theme if he can make a cwm file to revert to stock files. if you have knowledge of flashable cwm files, you can make an zip file with the original files in it to revert to stock.
Thanx for your ans.

I am on the latest gingerbread DXJPE. As most of you know Z4Root and Superoneclickroot and Gingerbreak don't work on this firmware.
We have available CF-root by Chainfire, DiP7 kernel, and Overcome which have root in addition to other features.
Myself and others that don't want OC/UV or CWM or Voodoo but want to use Titanium backup, etc want a simple root application or a patch to our firmware.
I cannot understand why can't a straightforward root cannot be done unless you have CWM or OC/UV....
So I am pleading/begging you expert coders/programmers in XDA-PLEASE PROVIDE A SIMPLE ROOT APP/PATCH FOR THE LATEST GINGERBREAD.
THANKS!

I am rooted on 2.3.4 and I don't have CWM. It's super easy to flash with Odin, no harder or longer than rooting with SuperOneClick would be.

May I ask what you used to root?
Update/edit: You have a sprint tab....
I agree, I have tried CF-root,DiP7 kernel and Overcome Gold. I have also posted my problems re: CWM but there seems to be nobody interested. I even asked Chainfire the author of CF-root for a way to root without the "extras" but he said it is not possible.
Maybe I will just be content on what is available?....

DXJPE. I have already tried rooting successfully- it's just that I wanted to have root with the following:
1. Stock boot animation with sound.
2. use of the default recovery instead of CWM.
3. be able to change CSC with no errors
All of the above can be done when I rooted using Z4root or superoneclick but not CF-root or Dip7 or more so not with overcome.
the stock bootanimations its already in the stock and it will only work in the stok !!!
if you rooted with superoneclick or Z4root how come you get CWM ? it only suppose to flash ROOT (superuser and busy box) thats all
to change the CSC ,tbh , its sucks way to do so , so ignore it and don't worry about it i also wanna try update via kies but never had
I think the person who posted the original question has a GSM tab and the guy who replied has the cdma sprint tab. The flash for cdma/sprint won't work for GSM. I might be wrong but if you try to flash with the wrong thing, there's an excellent chance you're going to bork your GSM tab. Same thing applies with the other android device I'm dealing with, the nexus s 4g. The GSM and cdma for ns4g and ns are different. The software and hardware under the Hood are different. Not drastically different but enough to make it so that development for the two types must be separate and aren't interchangeable.

to root a phone it doesn't matter if its CDMA or GSM , what is matter if you flashed rom is not for your tab ,
root only contains SUPERUSER and BUSYBOX and nothing else , what chainfire posted is a Kernel and not Root , but kernel contain both , CWM and Root access , and the kernels are for specific tabs.
my point is to root , it doesn't matter if you are GSM or CDMA , then how Z4root work or Superoneclick ? they just push the busybox and superuser to the system. so basically Root tools aren't that harm to your phone or tab

Are you sure that by only editing the dat file you will also reset the settings to the CSC that you choose? Example are language, frequency settings, applications for the region, etc?
What I know is that the CSC should match a nv_data.bak file for your particular firmware. If there is no match then it will be pointless to change CSC but just changing to any value.
BTW,hacking the cache file and installing the hacked file via CWM also solves the missing PDA and CSC ....

The advantage of android is that non market apps can be installed even without root. IOS in idevices do not allow non appstore apps to be installed unless jailbroken.
Also apps which require root are available for android on the market while you will find similar apps only thru cydia.

Our firmware is DXJPE, w/c is the asian region... I think there is an option for gingerbreak on superoneclick but I personally have not tried it out... Maybe bongski can try it out and see if it works...
@bongski: There is an option on superoneclick for "gingerbreak", just take a look at the available option, it may work for you... I don't have superoneclick on my laptop so I cannot tell you where exactly is that option... Try it out and see if it works...
I don't root my TAB, only on froyo when I want to flash other ROMS, so I can't be of much help here...
Both gingerbreak under superoneclick and the gingerbreak.apk don't work on the JPE firmware. I think the exploit in which gingerbreak is based is already closed by samsung.
the root you are able to achieve is through the rom not the kernel or recovery or any of that. that is not a horrible issue especially since there are only a hand full of roms. what has happened in the epic 4g forum is that some roms rely on kernel root and others rely on rom root, like what we have. rom root is fine for average root users cause you can get into the root directory and install or remove stuff at your whim. the issue will arise when the recovery is in place and roms are being developed. if you have a kernel thats not rooted and you flash a rom that isnt baked with root then you lose root. its kind of a chicken and the egg discussion on the surface. i imagine that kernel and recovery devs can argue the preferred method, but for most end users its moot. from what ive learned devices have a recovery kernel and a "rom" kernel. one gets you up and going and allows recovery to boot and the other will control how the rom runs. people have had some issues when they flash what that think is substantial kernel and use an app like quick boot only to find out they dont have a custom recovery like cwm. however when using 3 finger boot or in our case vol up +power they find the custom recovery. a rooted and properly flagged recovery kernel will boot into the custom recovery from the app or from the hardware induced recovery boot. if you read through oldmacnut's thread he eludes to partial root issues. again when our root comes through an odin of a rom thats got root baked in, you dont get to access all the innards of the device and the possibilities that other devices are seeing.
thats my interpretation of the situation
Guys, do you know about some way how to disable on I9000 (currently Juwe's 5.1 ROM) annoying low battery notification ? Either only sound or popup, or the best - both. I'm looking more for permanent solution, not using silent profiles or something like this.
Thank you.
delete the sound ogg from media folder duh - easiest tweak ever =)
A....I was searching for SND ;-)
You mean maybe to delete file TW_Battery_caution.ogg and TW_Low_Battery.ogg in /system/media/audio/ui/ ?
TW_Battery_caution.ogg - just move it to internal sdcard and reboot?
It worked, even without restart. There is still popup, but finally I'm not scared anymore by this sound ;-)
I can find this file with ES File Explorer but it won't let me delete it. I'm running stock Gingerbread 2.3.3 JVQ so can't root. Any ideas?

@amwebby
You must have root access, to delete the files.
That's what I figured. Without flashing a custom rom there seems no easy way to root these days, sigh.
Yes, there is. Just flash a different kernel, e.g. CF-root.
I didn't want to flash a different kernel. I guess I'll just have to wait until oneclickroot or gingerbreak work out how to do it.
you do not need to flash kernel to remove/move one file out of system, just use some rooted file explorer to move this god damn sound file

If I cannot root the phone how can I use a rooted file explorer?
how do you want to mod the phone without rooting it ?
I don't. I just don't want to flash a kernel to root the phone. As superoneclick and gingerbreak don't work on gingerbreak I'm stuck.
so use cfroot, it is root only basicly not forcing file conversion or anything oter

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm trying to keep it stock so I can evaluate Samsung Android vs other flavours and iPhone as they are in the marketplace. I just find that damned battery beep annoying!
Reading up on cfroot does not reassure me that this fits with my aim or indeed that it is a trouble-free method of rooting. Too many tales of FC and apps gone missing.
You can flash another kernel then install busybox and Superuser and then revert to stock kernel. The phone should be rootet then and you still have the original kernel. You just have to find it or make a backup with SGS Kernel Flasher (oh, that requires root i forgot...)

Hi everyone, I am brand new sgs owner and first time smart phone user and I upgraded my phones firmware on kies to 2.3.3 / baseband xxjvo / build number gingerbread.xwjvh
I been talking to a few people that have got 2.3.4 and cyanogen mod 7. And I really want to get one of them because my battery life is pathetic on 2.3.3
I have an idea how to do it (I have watched alot of tutorials) but what is confusing me is all the different downloads like cwm and speed mod, kernals, ROMS. All these terms are driving me mad as I dont know if I need to flash this stuff first to upgrade the firmware.
I have been told I may or may not need to root my phone to make it all work because of the current firmware xxjvo 2.3.3?? So what do i do?
Can I just flash a new firmware on via odin? or do i need to flash diff kernals or clockwork mod or speed mod what ever they are to make it work properly.
Im sure its all easy enough once its understood but I cant find basic explanations for all these terms.
I really dont want to mess up my phone but i know I can get this done once i know how.
So could someone that knows please tell me once off, what do I have to do to upgrade from gingerbread 2.3.3 xxjvo to something better like cm7 or 2.3.4.
Do I need to root first? install CWM or speed mod or whatever.
Also what is CWM and speed mod. are the roots?
Sorry for not knowing anything as i said its my first smart phone and I want to get to know how to use it to its full extent
Will greatly appreciate any advice/ help given.
If some ones going to help me could they post the links to the downloads that i will need.
Thanks very much

Could I upgrade from xxjvo without rooting?
Again sorry all the questions I feel like a dumbass.

Hi, check out samfirmware.com to download stock 2.3.4
I'm on the newest jvr, and my battery is good.
It's also flash manuals there for how to use odin.
thats the safest!
If you want root permission, you can flash cfroot kernel after the rom.
Edit: i'm on the oldest 2.3.4 jvr, looks like it came a new relese today.

Pls do refer my previous post for upgrading to 2.3.4 GB roms (2)
2.3.4 roms are way better for battery. There are some light weight roms with excellent battery life eg SURFACE,Matrux rom, Juwe's Smart Edition(My Pick) etc
You dont need to be rooted to flash a custom rom via ODIN.
CM7 is a custom rom and I would recommend it only if you know what u r doing. Its not very advisable for a noob (imho).

I know ive asked a few questions and ive searched a bit, but im coming from an htc phone, so everything is completely different, so id like to know, coming from a practically brand new phone, running a pre installed gingerbread, how do i root it, and put CWM on it? I would like to install custom roms, and im used to doing it through recovery and rom manager doesnt do it for the captivate from what i saw...so just a little help would be nice. And yes, again, i have searched, but i just find my self getting lost...i have odin, i have a captivate...the rest is a blur
No need to root to ROM it. Use Odin to flash a custom kernel that has cwm baked into it (all custom kernels do) then button combo into recovery and flash a ROM. The ROM will be rooted after the flash.
And completely forget ROM manager exists...it sucks on Samsung phones.
