Gorilla glass SUCKS... my screen is scratched!!!

I didnt buy a screen shield because i was told the droid/milestone use gorilla glass which makes it almost impossible to scratch the screen , boy i was WRONG, my milestone has like 4 scratches, two are just visible when the screen is off so its ok , but the other two are VERY VISIBLE, they're almost staring me , when i use apps with white backgrounds such as the messaging app and the browser the scratches "leak light" , i've become obsessed
Theres nothing i can do know but to advise all of you to buy a screen protector

Yes, and I can recommend the screen protectors from Martin Fields The price is average, but it's like that thing is invisible...no touch screen sensibility problems, scratch resistant and light absorbing...

The only phone I'm having which is scratch proof is the Nokia 8600 Luna. I've never saw another phone without scratches...

well, I don't want to sound like a sales representative, but I really have to admit that I didn't notice any change in touch sensibility (at least I didn't notice it)...I had a HTC Tattoo before and bought the screen protector from Martin Fields also for that one and there also was no change in sensibility...
it's only 0,2 mm thick by the way

TBH I have a cheap screen protector and never had any touch screen problems on any of the touch screen phones i have had

Gorilla Glass doesn't sucks... The perception that it is un-scratchable sucks.
Unfortunately this thing is poorly market and no one makes any effort to properly tell you that, altough Gorilla Glass is really harder and really much more difficult to scratch, it is easily scratched by diamonds (well, that is life, diamonds are harder than almost anything) and quartz (which is commonly found on dust and sand). Usually scratches come from friction from jewels with the screen or friction of dust/sand in your pockets or something else with the screen. I can tell you that I take care to not store my phone in dusty places or places where jewels are nearby, and never had any scratch on it, it has even fallen once or twice, screen down.
Mutch better than, per say, my old Nokia E51 (which I love BTW), that had scratchs of just taking it off my pocket and putting it on my pocket...

The main selling point of gorilla glass is its strength, it's really hard to break : It is hard to SMASH AND CRACK. the scratch resistant is just a marketing scheme.

I've never used any type of screen protection and not a scratch. It goes in my pockets dropped it a few times all good. A few nicks on the edges but glass is fine. Gorilla Glass rox!

This "Its awesome Gorilla Glass, dude! No Scratches and cracks never ever" is only marketing. There is every time a way to scratch and break this thingy.
THe first thing I am doing after purchasing a Gadget with a screen like Handhelds or Smartphones is to apply a really top quality Screen Protector. I have a screen protector on my Motorola Milestone and I am really glad that Ive done that.
So, don't trust always the adverts.

I use the matte screen protector from hong kong for like 20cent price and it is virtually without any scratches.
Also it is great because it doesn't attract fingerprints and is easier to swipe upon.
Strongly recommended!

Not me. I will never buy a screen protector. All my phones never had one but all of them looks good as new. If you put your phone in your pocket, Never put anything else and it will be fine.

well i use quite cheap screen protector since a few months, before that, nothing happend to my screen either, but i thought it could be good to make sure it stays like that.
c'mon nothing is indestructible.

I used a screen protector religiously on my old Nokia phone, but my Milestone gets beat up every day with no protector and still looks good. At this point, I would consider Gorilla Glass a plus on the spec sheet, but not necessarily a guarantee that the screen is indestructible. Can't hurt, though.

My phone have for some reason only mini scratches, you can only see them with the right light angle, for somehow it cant get big scratches, I tried on a corner ofcourse

I think gorilla glass is a joke. The first day I had my Motorola Photon, I dropped it and the screen broke in a hundred pieces. Had to get a new one and I promised myself I would be careful.. Didn't install a screen saver because I thought the glass would be like a ceramic crystal on a watch. Well, after three scratches on my glass, I decided to put a screen saver on. [Q] Captivate Gorilla Glass not the same as the other Galaxy S phones?

I have friends who have the Vibrant, Epic, and Captivate. All the screens look good, but the Captivate already has a tiny scratch.
Now nothing is indestructible, but then i found this video on youtube which made me think, is the glass different on each phone?

I put an invisible shield on my phone which made it "orange-peely" and finally after seeing a number of tests on the glass, including putting the phone into a bag of metal shards and nails and screws and mashing it up, I decided to take it off. I have been using the phone since it was released now, with only a couple days in invisishield and I've had it in my pocket with my keys the whole time and the screen is flawless. Dropped it at least a couple times (I have a case on it, but nothing protecting the screen otherwise).
I dunno. It would suck major ass to get the screen scratched, so it's probably smart to put one on, but the screen seems solid. I don't know if I'd trust a video from the company that makes invisishield, honestly. It's kind of like the cigarette companies telling congress that they swear, they aren't harmful or addictive.

Mine was in the boot of a moped I laid down a couple weeks ago in the bahamas...not a mark.
Also in my shorts' pocket with grains of sand through the vacation (it's sticky down there)...i wouldn't put my keys in the same pocket though, that's just asking for trouble.

I too had a screen protector I bought from Seidio. They really have a poor implementation of how to apply the plastic and I could never get the edges to stick even after applying pressure for 15-20 mins. Anyway, I ended up taking the screen protector of after seeing a Korean video of a I9000 getting demolished in various ways and not getting a scratch (up until the moment when they applied a knife directly to the screen and when they dropped it from about 5-6 ft). I have an Amzer case and for the past 3 weeks I have not had a single scratch. That includes incidents with keys or my wallet chain, or the occasional faceplant to the floor. I really think the captivate has at least comparable glass to the gorilla-class glass.

LMAOOO dude in video says "lets make this natural as if you dropped it", then presses and slides it accross concrete...

I have a small scratch after dropping a coin on the screen tried to put invisoble shield but it is ****ty, so i decided to keep it naked, still better than with bubbles and dust..

I can tell you that the samsung rep shows off the glass to at&t reps, and they rscratch it with kruss to show the durability. It is as advertised.

Mine is scratched, and I didn't do anything except put it in my pocket. No keys and no coins. So this gorilla glass stuff isn't impenetrable.

Same here. No idea how but I managed to get two scratches on the screen. No big deal.

I had a screen protector, but got sick of it quick. It s been 3-4 weeks and no scratches. Only protection I have on it is the Bodyglove case. I try to make sure I don't put it in the same pocket I have my keys in though. I'm guessing the scratches a lot of people get are from the sharp edges of a key. A razor will scratch gorilla glass and I've had keys in the past that were pretty sharp on some of the points.

Wait until PETA finds out they're making glass out of gorillas!

The iPhone gets superior glass made out of endangered mountain gorillas, while we are stuck with inferior product made from the common lowland gorillas.

Hate to break it to you, but Gorilla Glass isn't magical. Just look at the iPhone 4. It's a scratch magnet. Definitely the easiest iphone to scratch by miles. The captivate is the exact same glass, and guess what??? It's scratchable.
From everything I've seen, Gorilla Glass (or the coating on the glass) is very succeptable to micro scratches. Usually vertical scratches (along the grain of the glass) around 1mm to 2mm long. That's what my first Captivate screen did within a day of normal use. I took it back and got another phone and a butt load of screen protectors. My iPhone 4 did the same thing, but seemed to be much easier to scratch. My buddy's Captivate has a scratch that is almost identical to my first Captivate, but more toward the middle of the screen.
I think Gorilla Glass is as close to a full on failed experiment in mobile devices as we've seen recently. I would take the material that the iPhone 3GS screen was made of any day of the week.

I expect to be using this hand-held for the next two years, so within a few days I put on a shield dry as instructed. Hated the bubbles for two weeks before trying water; not much better. Then tried some glasses cleaner from the WalMart vision center; can't even tell the shield is there. Water beaded, but the clener coated and squigyed ou nicely.
Any glass will scratch and out here in the country I don't live or work in a clean environment...

The iPhone is not Gorilla Glass. iPHone uses a hardened silica glass, and Gorilla Glass is made by corning and in their demos is superior to soda glass and silica glass.
Gorilla Glass is not indestructible, but it is also not in the iPhone 4.

I just got a captivate that had a ton of little scratches on the screen out of the box. So much so that the screen has a very rough texture to it. Needless to say I'm returning it, but it just goes to show that the gorilla glass is definitely susceptible to scratches.

I sure would love to see some photos of all these scratched screens. I was in the AT&T store today and three were on display all beaten to hell but the glass was still flawless.
Now, having said that, the easiest way to scratch this (or any) glass is to put another piece of glass on top of it. Say, for example, laying the phone face down on a glass table. The glass will pull towards one another and if there are specs of dust, dirt, etc on either of the pieces, guess what's going to get dragged across the surface when you go to pick it up...

From what I've read, the aluminosilicate screen is so similar to Gorilla Glass that it's still unverified if Corning isn't behind the iPhone 4. I'm not contesting your point. I was just going off of what I read. Either way, they both scratched in near identical ways, in nearly the exact time frame, from the same type of usage...

I would be more than happy to send you a picture of the phone I took back to the store for the scratched screen... The device was working perfectly at the time, so I was in no rush to get rid of it. The scratch was too distracting to live with.

I'm mostly curious what people are doing with their phones to get so many scratches. I've had mine since release, no screen protector and still no scratches. Have dropped the phone a couple times were it landed face down. I do have a cheap silicon case but that's it heh. Usually carry in my front pocket. Occasionally it ends up in same pocket with my keys/change. So how are so many other people getting scratches, I just don't get it heh.

Im super, super careful with my phones and i did carry my Nexus One with case but without a screen protector.
why? because i knew that accidents happen and a good looking case will help in case i drop my phone.
now, talking about screen protectors, i really dont like them.
takes away the beauty of the screen specially S screen.
i never got a scratch on my nexus one, carry the phone is my pocket by itself or on my bag when going to work.

This is not the nexus one, there our people that got their phone's screen scratch by staring at it.
get a screen protector - clarivue is what im using, no orange peel nor touch issues. Screen looks great! couldn't notice a difference with the naked glass.
(Had also the cheap ones from ebay - yaak!)

I don't think anyone has reported that they scratch their screen YET. The battery cover is a different story tho....

IMO, I would not want to use screen protector. I have used my Hero for over a year without screen protector. Due to it's chin, it never touch the surface. The screen is coated to reduce finger prints (though it does not eliminate finger prints totally it is still pretty good compare to my friends' i phones with screen protector) and since it is curve screen it should not touch the surface when you drag on the table, face down just like my current hero. My nexus S will be arriving in a few days and I don't inted to get one.

+1 for clarivue, you forget it's on your phone after a while.

The Nexus S screen scratches as easily as any other screen, Gorilla Glass or not. If you thought you were safe with the Nexus One, don't buy one for the Nexus S.
It is not the screen that scratches while you look at it, it is the battery cover. So I would recommend a case, but you were already going to buy one I see.
If you really want a screen protector, go with a super clear one like Clarivue or Seidio. But I won't buy one. It is glass after all, and the anti-smudge layer won't work when you have a screen protector, of course.

was using rubbing alcohol to clean the screen.
i dont know what other chemical he used.

personally I think screen protectors are one of the biggest scams in the cell phone industry

Lol, why would you clean your phone with alcohol or any other chemical, when there is an oleophobic coating on the display? I mean, that's the purpose of the oleophobic coating, right? It is there so you don't need to use chemicals to clean your display...

I don't like to use any case for my phone. I have not been using any case for 3-4 previous phones. Normally the back of the screen start to scarch due to vibration. I never put my phone into vibration when I place it on hard surface. I never put my phone together with other object such as key or coins in same pocket. The only time I use vibration when the phone is in pocket.
Some time I even joke to my friends that hero does not need screen protector because it has built in screen protection (chin that make screen never touch the surface) and even drag it on the table. My NS is arriving in a few days time. I don't think I'll be using any screen protector.

When I bought my Epic 4G a few months ago, I got talked into getting one of the screen protectors they sell at the Sprint Store. I hated it. It made the screen look dull and made it feel not right to touch. I took it off and decided never to buy another screen protector.
Then, I got my SNS and I got a case for it but I was amazed how quickly the screen accumulated fingerprints. I broke down and got Ghost Armor and now, I don't even use the case I bought for it. I love it. The phone feels so great naked and I love it.

The case with the coating coming off isn't necessarily due to using chemicals. If that were the case, the whole screen would've been affected, not just those few spots that were pictured.
My first NS had similar spots being affected and I never used anything on the screen other than a microfiber cloth.

Gorilla Glass screen so is a protector necessary?

Just wanted to get some thoughts / experience from you guys on this please.

Gorilla Glass is tough, but it's not the indestructible thing a lot of people think it is. I still have the factory protector in place.

Durable, yes, scratch proof, no. Even people that are gentle get scratches once in a while. If one grain of sand gets in your pocket with the phone you could end up with scratches. Do yourself a favor and get a good quality protector that you will never notice once its on. I use Steinheil protectors.

You have not tried any good protectors then. Stick with dry application ones. The wet applications are more rubber like. The Steinheil is called the Ultra Optics I think. Have one on my Transformer and you can't even tell its there and can slide across it just like the glass. I used Boxwave in the past, but they scratched too easily. There are a lot of good protectors out there, just do some reading and stay away from Zagg Invisible Shields no matter what you do.

I use a cloth pouch for my phone and haven't got any scratches since I got it (launch)
Like crzycrkr said, sand and minerals/stones in general are kryptonite for Gorilla Glass, whereas coins/keys/metal are no problem.
So, in my opinion, if you keep the phone in a pouch, you shouldn't face any serious problems.

Unless some sand finds it's way into the pouch, then you're utterly boned.

Hey dude. Do use a screen protector, my Nokia X6 has Gorilla glass too. but it has some scratches at the screen even when I put it inside a leather case.

i have no display protectors, imho they are unnecessary...
i believe that because when my o2x fell on the asphalt 3 months ago, faced down, i found lots of scratches on the plastic corners, but no scratches on the display. i could post some photos of the phone.
so, if the phone standed the asphalt, i guess it stands my pockets too

Asphalt is not particularly hard. The only people who don't use screen protectors are the ones who haven't scratched their devices yet. Then they curse amd wwonder why they didn't listen. With the quality of the protectors out there, there's not reason not to get one

I use it since April 2nd and do not use any screen protector or any other protector. I have my phone always with me and most of the time it is in my Jeans front pocket. I just came back from an outdoor trip to the polar circle and generally do lots of outdoor activities and my phones screen still is as new.
Sometimes I have sand in my pocket after I have played Beach Volleyball and still no scratches.
Sand will scratch Gorilla Glass, but it needs some force to do so. It wont scratch it if it only gently slides over it in a pocket.
Think about what you do with your phone before you do it and you won't need a protector. And don't worry, the O2X is really well crafted and not easy to damage.

Again, congratulations, but you are lucky and just one scratch away from kicking yourself for not putting one on.

Screen protector is just a thin film that'll not affect the screen's responsiveness, unless ofc you have that Sony bulky one. It is also cheap less than a buck. Why take the risk of a naked screen outdoor?

Because for one the scratches or damage in general could also happen on the backside and I wont put my pretty phone into an ugly case. Also I like the touch of glass.
And finally when I will sell this phone sometime in one or two years, the price won't differ between a totally unscratched pone and one with a few scratches.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried a good quality, dry application protector, like a Steinheil ultra clear? 99 out of 100 people wouldn't even know its on, and all 100 wouldn't have a problem with the feel.

No I haven't.
I've used screen Protectors on my former phones and they did statisfy me.
With this phone I still am happy that I don't need one.

First thing I did was taking off the protector when I bought my phone.
Still no scratch, always carrying in my pocket.
The thin protector will not protect the phone from getting scratched for objects which will damage gorilla glass.
Without protector it feels better also.
I don't leave the plastic around the seats in my car also.

I am not sure why people still use screen protectors on today's high end devices especially phones like the Galaxy Note II with the enhanced toughened glass it has. Not only do they look terrible, they cause problems. See the numerous video uploads of people trying to scratch the glass for proof of how tough it is.
The Galaxy Note II has an extra issue with screen protectors in that it obviously uses an S-Pen detection layer.
I have just read the official manual for it and it clearly states NOT to use one as it causes sensor malfunctions. See attached clipping:

This is very true with the invent of gorilla glass I have personally tried acracthing screens with no success I have even gone to the point of using an extremely sharp knife and dragging the point across the screen, he screen protectors are only really good for keeping fingerprints off screen ans if you are worried about that you really have no business having a touch screen and yes the cause many problems

This is very true with the invent of gorilla glass I have personally tried acracthing screens with no success I have even gone to the point of using an extremely sharp knife and dragging the point across the screen, he screen protectors are only really good for keeping fingerprints off screen ans if you are worried about that you really have no business having a touch screen and yes the cause many problems

Any ideas what they meant by sensor malfunction? Inaccuracy of S pen? Is it a temporal or permanent malfunction?

ya let me see you go to the beach and somehow manage to get some sand accidently on ur phone like i did when i tucked my phone in my bag which happened to have caught some sand from playing arnd..........do that and then come back here and tell us what u think of screen protectors......

I think the massage for sensor error is not for s-pen. but maybe for brightness or gesture hand on the top of the sensor.
I'll test it when it arrives.
But gorila glass or not... every phone i had got scratched, and if it was made with diamond glass .- it would scratch...
F..it - I'll use the screen protector. (bestskinsever has the best one for me.. I just emailed them when will they get one for NOTE II.

Gorilla glass will still scratch I had a htc one x with a few light scratches from sand and everyday grit

I get AMAZED when people vouch for screen protectors like they are invincible ARMOR which protects the screen from all possible damage like that from Sand all keep talking about.
Is it so that sand will not scratch the screen protector but will the screen? Or is it that we feel that even if it does scratch the screen protector, it will miraculously save the screen? Both this conditions seems quite ambiguous and UNBELIEVABLE to me unless I see a proof that screen protectors ACTUALLY save the screen even when scratched through Sand or Diamond or whatever!
I would appreciate enlightenment through fellow members on this and more thoughts accordingly.

This really annoys me.
Gorilla Glass SRATCHES. It may not be a huge scratch but you will always get light scratches which only show up when you inspect the screen closely and I HATE those more because you can be so careful with the phone and then find some tiny dust particle you couldn't even see has made a mark on your display. I hate it.
Screen protectors get Scratched. They will get more scratches than the glass because they are softer but the screen will be perfect underneath.
And when it's really dirty ill just change the protector.
I agree that the protectors won't stop something seriously sharp like metal going through but if you take care with the phone and use a protector then the phone will be perfect for as long as you have it.
And incidentally I have a GLAS.T SGP protector on my iPhone 5. It's glass so it won't scratch easily, and yes it will pick up light scratches but again underneath its perfect.
That's why I use them.

Why is this confusing to you? If you cover something, and the cover is scratched, then you can just change the cover. If your protector is pierced, then of course no go, but I suspect your screen is still damaged. Scratches are typically not deep.

I have a Spigen Crystal Clear protector on my Note II
So far after a days use i have found NO problems with having the protector on.
I will keep this thread informed if I run into any problems.

My question is more related to the THICKNESS of those screen protectors. How does a less than 1mm thin plastic skin protect whats beneath. Wouldn't it scratch the screen anyway when it is exposed to sand and hard metal which can scratch Gorilla glass?
I get extremely annoyed when the screen protectors themselves may get easily scratched even while putting on the screen. I have used SGP Ultra Fine on my SGS2 for few weeks and while I loved the way my fingers used to glide over them with hardly any smearing compared to the original Gorilla glass screen, I could not tolerate the numerous scratches it got despite careful use and hence had to remove it to avoid the distraction and recover the outstanding display beneath. I hate spoiling the display for such hypothetical situation where we believe that the protector can actually protect the screen as I anyway never had any scratch on my SGS1 and only recently noticed couple of them on my SGS2 which may have come during a visit to the service center and am still okay with the screen without the protector as otherwise the screen is still flawless and those scratches are invisible unless specifically searched at an angle with strong light (like sunlight) comes through a specific angle.

The negatives outway the positives in that, they alter functionality of the phone as stated by Samsung, they spoil the appearance of your phone with bubbles and mis-alignment, they are not going to save the screen from heavy scratches anyway and the only people that really benefit are companies that sell them.
If you use one and you are happy with that then all well and good. But personally I find if you take care of your phone and use a good case as I have done for years you simply won't need a protector.

I used one for months on a first gen Note, no problems at all; I can't imagine why it would cause any problems. And the reason I installed one is because before I installed it, a small bit of dust caused a noticable scratch on the glass. As for appearance issues, if you take your time and install a decent quality one, you won't notice it at all, and I tend to prefer the feel of a protected screen over glass now. Having used a few protectors over the years, it's hard to imagine what you'd be doing that could penetrate a protector, short of attacking it with a Stanley knife, in which case your screen is the least of your worries. They're designed to take minor scuffs, and since this is a stylus orientated device, I'd be worried about dragging plastic over it without some protection.

I am on day 3 with my protector on my Note II and no problems.
Pen works perfectly. Pressure also works perfectly.

I want to know about this as I plan to draw a lot on my galaxy note and I am known to be quite "expressive". I don't want to scratch up my screen from doing digital paintings, that's why I want a screen protector :/

I'm still not sure what they meant by malfunction....is this a long term malfunction or short tern while the screen protector is on?

The bottom line is your screen will probably end up with a minor scratch after a year of use. So do you put some cheap plastic/rubber film on it and never enjoy the brilliant screen? Or do you enjoy it for all it's glory and deal with scratches if they happen?
The Note 2 comes with the best screen protector already. It is called Gorilla Glass 2. Why put a 10 cent (sold to you for $40) piece of crap on it?

There are great protectors out there that are very clear and looks almost like as if nothing is on it

Unless your screen protector is magnetic, it's not going to cause malfunctions.
You can put a piece of cardboard on top of your screen and it doesn't affect the stylus. Seriously. Try it.
The only way you are going to induce scratches is if your protector is made out of sand or something, or you trap sand or whatever under it.
I didn't use screen protectors with my galaxy note until I got a small scratch on the screen.
There is also a nice degree of comfort knowing your screen is protected. If you get something on the screen - dirt, oil, whatever.
Worst case scenario is you just get a new protector. (versus a new screen).
Do I really NEED one? Perhaps not. But I do anyway.
