OK, I've been reading here for 6 days all manner of Captivate unbricking. Here is my story...
I picked up a Captivate on the Rogers network. I connected it to my email server (Exchange 2010) with no problems, poked around, noticed the lag, noticed the SMS time issue, then promptly rooted, installed clockwork, and then threw cognition 2.2 beta 9.1.3. Quite frankly I was shocked at how much faster it was.
Anyways, after a day of poking around, I could not get my email to my exchange server running (tried the email.pak floating about), so I actually decided I was going to go back to the backup I made of my phone using clockwork before I installed cognition. When I restored my backup, I thought I had bricked my phone.
I let it rest for a day, then came back here, and found one of the 3-4 different variations of the 4 button download mode combo that permitted me to do the 1 click restore. This restored me to the AT&T version of 2.1. It worked, but was less than desirable.
I decided that at that point I really wanted to go back to stock, so I downloaded the stock backup on the Rogers Captivate wiki page, and did the restore using clockwork. The phone has not been the same since.
When i turn it on, I get an at&t splash screen, then in about 20 seconds I get the at&t "jingle", but the splash screen stays on. I can't seem to find any key combination that will permit me to get back into download mode so I can restore using the One Click that worked for me the first time. I have tried:
1. 3 button salute with USB in first, battery out initially.
2. 3 button salute with USB plugged in *as* I was inserting the battery.
3. Power and volume down (both with and without USB, and with battery being plugged in after USB and "during" insertion of battery)
4.Power and volume up with same combo's as #3.
5. Just volume up and volume down with same combo's as #3.
In all cases Odin was running before USB connected, running as administrator. I'm running 64bit windows, but I'm sure I have the correct drivers because I did this the first time with Odin and download mode and I haven't added or changed anything. But just for arguements sake I did uninstall, and then install the drivers again.
Any combination of power and volume buttons just gives me a battery charging logo. Occasionally when holding up until the second black screen I will get a quick indication that the computer might see something, but it dissappears withing a handful of seconds showing it promptly removed.
I'm downloading the Android SDK in the hopes that when I get the normal at&t splash screen after the "jingle" that something might actually be running in the background and maybe I can adb reboot download it but I'm not holding my breath.
Anyone seen this that has managed to get out of it? I'm starting to think the "unbrickable captivate" can be bricked. Assuming it is bricked, short of taking it back, is there anyone on the internet that can jtag these and in some fashion bring back to life?
Cheers,
Tim

and download mode is easy.
1. start odin3 and have data cable plugged into the computer
2. insert proper files if needed
3. hold volume up and volume down for 2 sec (no power button needed) then insert usb cable, continue to hold volumes till either the download mode screen pops up or odin3 sees the phone(if you bork the phone bad enough you can corrupt the download mode image, i did it with the not to successfull manhatten project kernel) but despite the screen being black it very well may be in download mode.
4. start flash
5. if it doesn't work send it to me ill find a use for it
alternatively if the phone can go passed the splash screens and boots fully you can adb reboot download. just get the development kit and drivers on your pc.

just to be clear, you are holding volume up as well as volume down starting with the phone being powered down and continue to hold them after you plug in usb untill something shows on the screen?
if your phone is not seeing the volumes buttons you are one of the very unlucky few that had a problem at the most inopportune moment.
there is also a way where you hold all three buttons till the phone reboots twice, or something. let me try it and ill give more specifics.

Pull the battery, open odin, plug usb into computer, hold vol up and down, plug usb into phone still holding vol buttons, drop in battery still holding vol buttons, when dl screen pops up and yellow com port lights up in odin release volume buttons. Do not touch power button at any time

Have you tried rebooting into recovery mode instead of download mode? Stock recovery is adb-ready and you should be able to adb reboot download. Its a long shot if you're having problems using button combo to get to d/l mode, but it's probably still worth a shot at this point.
If you were able to use 3 button combos before all this happened, and did NOT have to install the 3 button combo fix, its strange you don't have access to it now... Could restoring a Rogers Cappy to AT&T stock be the problem?

Yes, that's exactly correct. I do this:
1. everything pulled (battery, USB, sim, sd)
2. Open Oden (1 click)
3. Install battery
4. hold down (and keep holding) volume up and volume down
5. insert USB cable
6. depress (i.e. don't hold) power button
Goes straight to battery charging indicator.
If I swap #6 with holding the power button down, it continually reboots while just barely showing the battery charging indicator. I've tried letting go between black screens on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th black screen. Still no android dude with the shovel.
Try all the steps you stated but not the last one where you press the power button. Don't press the power button.

Trying to get into recovery mode gets me the at&t logo and the "jingle", but no recovery mode menu to reboot, etc.
This is what I'm worried about, restoring the Rogers stock over top of the Odin 1 click restore (which is an AT&T image) has bricked it and prevents download mode from invoking.

I know, I played with adb before I bricked it. ADB needs to "see" the phone, it no longer sees it (I have three computers, all three can't see it, but they can see my friends cappy with no problems first time, every time). Same process for his phone works every time to get into download mode, but not on mine.
And yes, have tried other USB ports on the same computer, both on the mainboard, and on the front ports.
Keep the ideas coming though please, I will try every one.

There's a trick to prompt download mode through a "jig" which you can hack together for about $2 in parts and a sacrificial microUSB cable...it works on the other SGSes, but I think it should work on the Captivate as well. Never tried it personally...

Oh, nevermind, found it in the i9000 forum. Will test first thing in the morning!
Cheers,
I bricked one today as well. Exactly what you are talking about here. The only thing is that i was still under the 30days so i swapped it out for a new one. As of right now ive been debating whether i want to do the voodoo fix (which i think is what bricked it to begin with)
Hi
I have just tried to update to 2.2, i updated Kies first, connected my phone, it came back saying update available, fully charged battery, all seemed to go ok, phone rebooted, but when coming back up I get the logo, and the start up music, then it vibrates a bit the keys on bottom left and right are lit up, screen black and doesn't seem to do anything.
I have removed battery, have tried 3 button restore (no effect) it just keeps vibrating every min or so.
holding the power button restarts it, thats about all i can get it to do.
Have I ruined the phone?? please help.

First question... Did you have a lagfix on the phone before you tried to update it?
Second question... If you answered yes to question one... Did you remove / disable the lagfix before you flashed through Kies?
i had lag fix and was rooted, i plugged it in to laptop and it was recognised and said update 2.2 available, so i thought that was ok.
Now it is as i describe as above, i get battery logo if i plug into laptop, bottom left and right keys are lit but don't do anything, screen is black and vibrates every couple of minutes, if i hold power button get the GT galaxy s screen then the music, then the S galaxys screen which goes black with the two keys lit, if i press power button again it goes off and to the battery logo again.
Cannot get odin or kies to recognise phone plugged in, or get it into recovery or download mode

you didn't answer the question but I will assume that you were using a lagfix but did not disable it before you tried to update you phone.
try removing the battery for a few minutes and try going to download mode (hold vol down + home + power)
Go into recovery mode (vol up + home + power 'till screen switches on) and select the delete data/cache (?) option with the volume keys, using the middle button to confirm. Your phone will work, but unfortunately, you'll loose all your app/settings =/
Should have un-lagfixed before updating :-s
let us know if Rawat's way worked for you.
I had disabled my lagfix too when updating to doc jk3 using cwm and same thing happened to me.
Only way i fixed it was to flash my phone's stock rom, jh2 2.1 using odin3 v1.3 and the firmware from samfirmware. (pda only, no pit, no repartition)
then i upgraded to froyo again and it worked.
I was flashing this 3 button fix with Clockworkmod recovery. After applying the update from zip, everything seemed to be working fine, so I pulled the battery so I could test it out without having to use CWR's reboot option, then waiting for it to boot and shut off. When I tried to turn it back on, nothing happened. I tried to boot it with the recovery 3 button combo and it didn't respond(still a completely black screen).
Also, I'm not sure whether or not CWR was actually flashed. I was accessing using the update.zip found in this thread. When booting into recovery, I got into the normal recovery screen, and it was only after I hit "reinstall packages" that I got into CWR. It was through this method that I tried to install the 3-button fix.
What I've tried:
This key combo: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775911
The phone didn't respond at all.
Switching the battery for a fully charged one. Still no response.
Inserted my homemade USB jig to no avail. I've tested it with a different Captivate and I've confirmed that it works.
Anyone got any ideas or "magic" key combos I should try. If not, would it be possible to send it into Samsung/AT&T and get it repaired/replaced?
EDIT: I think I'm in the same situation as these guys: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=977086
It's a build 1008 that I'm working with.
I'm on a similar issue. Phone is dead, no response to anything at all. Not even my previous jig that I used last time.
But it happened while I was flashing with Odin one click. Got stuck at the factoryfs.rfs step. Had to unplug it but after that I never came back up
I ordered a premade usb jig, and it'll arrive next week. If that doesn't work then I'm thinking of getting a cheap one off ebay, I can't spend another $500 considering this phone is only 4 months old.
The other choice is getting a broken phone for even less money, and replace the motherboard. But I don't know if there are considerable differences between phone batches.
I'll be Android-less for the next two weeks though, and that truly sucks.
Which build is your phone? It's located behind the battery to the left of one of the barcodes. I've heard that 2010 and 2012 break when used with odin one click.
Have you guys tried the volume up and down trick right after you put battery back in while its connected by usb to the PC? I bricked my phone to the point where it would not even turn on and finally was able to get it back into download by using that method. Kind of tricky but you plug phone into usb to pc. Take battery out, while holding volume up and down put battery in and keep holding until download screen comes up. I hope that works for you, if you havent tried yet
I have gone so far as to brick my phone to the point where it would not turn on. After a few hours it was only a screen RST_STATUS 0x0. The one post you linked says to hold vol up/down and power. But try not pressing power..only up and down. I could not get mine to do anything until I tried someone else's method of not pressing power and only volume buttons
I had a soft brick last night. Phone would start with Phone ++ PC connect picture, nothing else. And here's what I did to get into Download:
- Pull SIM out
- Pull MicroSD out
- Pull Battery out
- Put Battery back in
- Hold Vol Down button (only the vol down)
- Plug USB cable in
- Phone boots into Download mode
The 3-button or Vol UP and DN key trick didn't work. Only the Vol DN and USB plug-in worked for me. I hope you have good luck.
My first time using Odin One Click presented me with a similar situation, stalled after it said "DO NOT UNPLUG..." ... I don't have a Jig but nothing else I tried was working...Held down power button to be presented with a black screen, no backlight or anything...
Pulled the battery out, waited a full 30 seconds (battery pulls less than that didn't work for me) and put it back in, Volume Up + Down and plugged in USB and it worked.
Best of luck to you. I was feeling kind of queasy after finding out my first attempt at flashing could have been disastrous.
If you are hard bricked and have no response even with a JIG, I can still fix it for you. Just PM me for questions...
This happened a few times to me. I remove the battery, open odin one click, hold up and down vol buttons, then plug in the usb cable. It typically throws me.back into dl mode. Be sure you are using JV6 (see Icezar's post in Dev section) when going back to stock because it doesnt include bootloaders and makes hard bricking less likely.

Hi
I tried upgrading from ice cream sandwich to jellybean and ended up bricking my phone when the flashing failed and I panicked and unplugged my phone. I think it failed because i was flashing something for a different model rather than the i1900t as this is the New Zealand/Australian model. I cant find any button combos that will put my phone into download mode and the phone doesn't turn on. The only life that it seems to exhibit is get warm around the sim card area when i put the battery in. Help.

Download mode is vol down+power on the GB bootloaders. But if a JIG doesn't get you in download mode, there are 2 possible reasons: 1st- Battery isn't charged. 2nd- Your phone is bricked.
If it's the 2nd one then your only hope is with mobiletechvideos .com (Connexion2005 on xda). He can use his JTAG to push the GB bootloaders into your phone.

My Galaxy Exhibit II 4G is about a year old, rooted and i have CM11 installed. Everything was fine, I had it plugged in (charging) and i was downloading an app (Camscanner) from the Mobogenie store when suddenly the phone shut off and the battery icon appeared with the loading circle in the middle.
This did not stay on for long as the screen would go off and this would again appear. After pulling the battery and removing the charger, then reinserting the battery, the phone would just flash the SAMSUNG logo in this very same manner.
I am unable to get into either recovery or download modes and when i try this combination (VOL UP + VOL DWN) i get:
RAMDUMP MODE
Cause: Force Upload
I have been reading forums for hours and i have found nothing. Is my device bricked? What can I do to recover it? Please, any help would be greatly appreciated :crying:

Thanks for replying. Nothing happens. It just continues to reboot like I'm not doing anything. The only way I'll get a reaction out of it is with vol up + vol down
It can be tricky. This post may be clear http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32437850&postcount=6
The link you sent me to sounds similar to my problem, except I wasn't trying to update the firmware. The crash was spontaneous.
However, neither of those methods work. As soon as I put in the battery the SAMSUNG logo appears, then disappears and reappears and it continues like that... Pressing the power button does nothing, whether by itself or with the volume up/down button
I am beginning to panic

Anyway, after many hours of investigation I discovered it was a hardware problem. The power button was stuck and so it forced it to reboot repeatedly. It also explains why it (the power button) was unresponsive. Disassembling the phone and freeing up the power button solved the problem.
P.s. Your build of CM11 is boss
I have same problem with power button. Had to tweak it hard cause it was so sensitive.
It's the first time it's happened to me. Probably because I dropped it so many times
Strange, ...

OK so I'm no expert or anything but maybe my experience with this Model might be able to help you a little bit. I have the same model and it was doing the exact same thing however I haven't rooted it. And I've since corrected the issue on mind particularly it appeared that it was the charge port and/or USB that either had a bad connection or possibly it was boot looped. However with me not rooting the I didn't understand how it could be booted Looped so I started playing around with holding the power button playin with USB things of this nature and what I found was that if I hold the USB to one side either left or right, this allowed me to help a boot farther into it sequence at first to just show the Samsung logo over and over then I could get it to get to the boot sequence about halfway through the boot animation until I finally got to the exhibit screen where displays its model and 4G status. I accomplish this by holding the USB to one side and pushing and holding the power button intermittently throughout the boot. Once I hit the unlock screen unlock the device and I immediately factory data reset it. I'm under the impression that mine was possibly I think that mine was somehow a corrupted bootloader or software still I don't know what caused it to backed up to this day occasionally it'll shut itself down and reboot on me that's why I'm here today I've got all the parts and pieces I need to flash a new rom and hopefully new software the new work over I'll be good to go I also cleaned the USB port made sure that it was still snug to the board all of the good stuff. I don't know if it'll help you but I had the same situation I thought you'd like to know that it was probably not what you were doing with the phone it may just be the software itself with this particular phone see I done nothing that you didn't had the exact same problems. I hope it was somewhat helpful if you haven't gotten it unlocked or re-booted yet. Then maybe just play around with the power sources and power buttons. And see if you can get the same results I did
Dear all,
I was on beyond 5.3 with twrp 3.3.1.7 and I wanted to update everything. Magisk, root etc was working fine.
I downloaded the patched twrp file from the beyond telegram chat and flashed it as image into the recovery partition.
The installation was finished in 2 seconds, but stupid me chose to power off instead of rebooting the recovery.
So I tried to enter recovery using the button combo but nothing happened and I was stuck with the samsung logo.
The current status is that my phone only shows the samsung logo.
Holding the power button for a minute doesn't do anything.
Pressing the button combo for recovery mode doesn't do anything.
Pressing the button combo for dl mode makes the phone reboot. It vibrates for a sec, then the samsung logo shows again.
If I keep pressing all 3 buttons the phone keeps on rebooting and vibrating each time, but dl mode never appears. If I let go of the power button the logo stays and again, nothing happens.
So basically I can't enter dl mode nor reboot.
Should I let it run dry and try again or just throw out of the window immediately? :crying:
I let the battery drain over night. Phone was finally off.
So when I plug it in, the Samsung Logo appears and doesn't change. It just stays like that forever until the battery drains.
Pressing the power button doesn't do anything, no matter how long. It doesn't reboot nor does the logo disappear.
Pressing vol+, bixby and power again does nothing.
Vol-, bixby and power makes the phone reboot. The screen turns black, the phone vibrates shortly, the logo reappears. If I keep pressing the buttons the phone reboots again, and again, and again, mever reaching download mode.
If I let go of the power button and keep pressing vol- and bixby the phone stays black and won't even show the logo. Nothing happens. If I let go of either of the two buttons the logo appears again.
It won't boot, won't go into recovery or go into dl mode.
I'm doing all this while it's plugged into the usb port of my pc, and it doesn't get recognized. Samsung 300k tool doesn't recognize it either.
Now I know the meaning of "bricked" lmao.
Does anyone know how to possibly fix this?
Pressing only the power button for a minute literally does nothing. Like hell, how is that even possible?
You can try this to go to download mode:
Vol down + bixby + usb cable connect to PC
It's advisable to charge battery first before flashing firmware.

Got into DL mode, got odin to start, but after like 10 seconds my phone dies and odin fails.
Now I cant get into DL mode, but rather only the "an error occurred while updating the device software. use the emergency recovery function in the smart switch pc software."
Could it be the battery that simply dies?

Got into DL mode, got odin to start, but after like 10 seconds my phone dies and odin fails.
Now I cant get into DL mode, but rather only the "an error occurred while updating the device software. use the emergency recovery function in the smart switch pc software."
Could it be the battery that simply dies?

Yes most probably a discharged battery. Hopefully you can go to DL mode again after charging your phone.
hello,
I've and S10e and because an important app to me I need to go back to android 9 where it works.
I've read a lot info about downgrade, but no one says ROOT/UNBRICK.
Can someone inform if there is a way of downgrade without ROOT (maintaining the warranty).
thanks in advance
P.S.: Maybe too naive question, sorry for that
