Running latest CM7 stable mod and noticed recently my signal bars and network connection signal indicator stay white now. Used to always be green, occasionally turning white but usually only when signal strength was bad. But now they stay white.
Anyone know what this could mean, thanks in advance.

Or check to see if Background Data is turned off.
Yeah, I did a little more research on this after I posted. I believe it does mean that I'm not connected to the Google servers cause my GMail doesnt upate until I manually synch (even though I have auto-synch enabled).
I tried the other suggestion but I already had Background Data enabled, so I just unchecked then rechecked it again.
Everything is all green again. Must have been a glitch where it wasnt recognizing.
Thanks again!
Okay, my phone keeps reverting back to all white and does not switch back to green on its own. I have to manually force it via the method I described above.
Could this be an issue in CM7.0??? I would have posted in that thread but it wont let me since I dont have the required 10 posts.
I never had an issue with it resynching to green with CM7-RC2 and RC4.
Again, thanks in advance.

I doubt it's a ROM issue but you could always flash it on top just to see. I think it's supposed to go white when the phone is "sleeping" fyi. Go into settings/sync and make sure bg data and auto sync are checked, then click your gmail acct in there, click all 3 boxes, that may also fix it.
Thx dude, I've double checked and all things you recommend I have checked and all are checked. So I'll just keep an eye on it and see if it keeps acting up and if I can narrow down the possible cause.
A reboot fixed this issue for me. Went all day and switched back and forth between green and white without me having to do anything.
Must have been some glitch hanging in the system that got cleared out on the reboot...weird how that happens some times.
Switching on Airplane Mode, then back off seems to refresh everything as well as a reboot does, for me anyway.
just something i noticed. when my phone storage space was "low" (below 15mb), my phone switched from green signal and data icons to white, and nothing would automatically sync for me. once i uninstalled an app to bump myself back up to above 15mb of free space, the icons turned green again and everything started syncing. I guess this is a built in feature?

First things first... Long time reader, (well, since november) but a first time poster ... Ive learned an unbelievable amount from this site, and am currently running Fresh ROM 1.1, and LOVING it
However, i have a few questions... I figured it would be easier to condense it into one thread, unless i need to make more...
1. Im loving the new blueish theme. However, even with older versions, and the stock rom, i cant ever tell how much battery life i actually have.. I was wondering if it were possible to have a text indication as opposed to an icon? I remember reading somewhere that the OS only supports 20% (i think) increments... but even so, it would be easier to figure out how much battery i have. Im guessing its some type of image(s) that just update according to the reported battery percentage, but i have no clue.. If thats so, could the images be replaced with images containing text? I figured if this was possible, it could be applied thru a ROM update.zip (as done from recovery).
2. I don't know if this is a Fresh ROM "bug" or not, but i was on the phone the other day, and when i pulled it away from my face to turn the screen on, then disconnect the call, i had to drag down on the screen like it was locked. Now, this was a three way call, and my first ever on this phone. So thats why I am unsure if its even a bug... Perhaps its meant to be? I just found it odd.
3. MMS over WiFi problem... This was brought up in another thread that never received a reply... I doubt this is a Fresh ROM problem, as i had the problem on stock rom as well: when WiFi is enabled, I am unable to send OR receive any MMS messages. The message will show up in the chat log, BUT, when i press "download," the EVDO icon pops up in the status bar for a split second, then disappears and the picture does not download. As soon as i turn off WiFi and press download, it downloads it with no problem. Anyone know what is causing this? and is there a workaround? Or do i just have to turn off wifi for MMS? I thought the system would be smart enough to turn on & use EVDO when needed.
Thanks
Ben
Look into the Tsowen(sp?) battery icon for that. It was the default in 1.0, but if you're interested in accurate battery percentages, the HTC Battery Widget from the market place gives info on voltages, heat, battery type, and level down to 1%.
thanks for that.. i didnt think to look in the market. not exactly what i was looking for but itll do lol.
also you may want to try Power Manager from the market, it has a very accurate percentage readout along with the ability to limit certain things from running at lower battery life, such as dimming the screen automatically and also turning off wifi and gps and whatnot. it has saved me on trips to Philly a ton of times!
1.1 fresh copy paste from gmail no longer works
I usually during work have to touch my email screen when i have the gmail application up and it normally grabs the address thats on the screen in the body of the email......with the new fresh 1.1 it doesnt anymore. Is there a fix for this???
thanks
yeah the apps work. i was just hoping there was some way to replace the icon in the notification bar with text.
Ever since upgrading to ATT ICS, my WiFi and Mobile Data connections both are turned on during the night. During the day, I don't run either. When I am at home, I use WiFi and then turn WiFi off and plug in the charger before I sleep. When I wake up in the morning, WiFi and Mobile Data are turned ON. This happens constantly for me.
The second thing I tried was not putting the phone on the charger for the night. Come the next morning, WiFi is ON but Mobile Data remained off.
Something is triggering WiFi and Mobile Data to automatically turn on. I can't seem to find the setting that is allowing this to happen.
With GB, I never had this issue. If I recall correctly, GB had a setting for the sleep period of the phone. I don't remember much else of what was adjustable in that menu and I can't remember if I set anything in there for GB and data. I cannot find anything remotely like that in ICS. ICS is bloody annoying me right now with these quirks.
I wish I could downgrade back to GB right now so I don't have to deal with data turning on during the course of the night.......
If you want to go back to gb look under the development tab for return to GB from ics. It's down a ways. Not sure what to tell you about the other issues but to try and reflash ics.

Try Airplane Mode
Sounds like you have some app trying to make a connection to run an update. It's turning on WiFi and/or the Mobile Data connections. I'll check mine tonight to see what happens.
Try turning on the Airplane mode when you go to bed. Hold down the power button and select the Airplane Mode option. If that doesn't keep the radios off, something is really wrong.
I sometimes use the Airplane mode at night to conserve the battery, but since you're charging, that's not an issue.

I found the thread. Thanks. I just need to read about unlocking the bootloader now before proceeding. The only downside of downgrading is I will lose the ICS radio which is giving me such good signal strength. Before in my room at home, I would get 1 bar, now I get 2 or 3. LULz.

This happened since day 1 of upgrading to ICS. The only software that I installed were some games and utilities that I had on GB. I never had an issue with either data connection turning on.
I might try another flash of ICS but that would mean running it for a night without the downloaded software for a couple nights and then installing each one by one, night by night.
I can use airplane mode but not for long term. I need to be able to receive calls from work when issues arise during the 2nd and 3rd shifts.
This only happens at night. It never happens during the day which makes me believe something is happening during the phone sleep time. And there's no setting that I can find for the phone sleep time like GB. Grr.....
Why not just leave data on if u don't mind me asking. Can't be using that much data really

Spoke to HTC support, they advised to return it to retailer for them to examine it....WTF...lol

We have two threads on this issue of WiFi and/or Data turning on at midnight. When I first found the missing voice dialer problem, I e-mailed HTC support. They responded to my e-mail and then a member of their escalation team called me. They recognize that this is an ICS upgrade issue. Of course, they don't know when it will be fixed.
If you have not already done so, log into HTC.com, go to Support and send an e-mail describing the problem. They need as much feedback as we can give them to get HTC and/or Google to fix these problems.
I am not surprised that the ICS upgrade broke some things, but the number of things surprises me.

Too bad. I noticed mine came on the first night after I installed ICS. Took awhile to find the settings I posted. When I found the settings and clicked on the one in the picture I never noticed Wi-Fi come on on its own since.
So I finally got around to trying Airplane mode. WiFi still kicks on overnight while plugged in.
vivid x2 - I had that checked to "Never" and I still have WiFi and Mobile Data coming on at night.
brucegil & FPV-GT - I will submit a support email ticket. I'm surprised there aren't more of us on here that are having this issue.
syrkel - I don't want either WiFi or Mobile Data on. If I'm not using it, why have it activated? All I need during the night is 2G voice so I can respond to work issues that may arise.
Just throwing another thing to look into. Try to reset the data counter and check it every few hours to see what apps are using the wi-fi data? Some of the apps even allow you to access the app settings from there as well. Check some of the app permissions and try disabling a few apps at a time that allow changes to wi-fi settings.
what a coincidence. i was just jacking around on my phone in class and found the advanced wifi option and there is a setting to keep wifi on during sleep. it has three options: always, only when plugged in, and never. hope this helps
Try installing a juice defender. It turns off data when your screen is off automatically. Also, (maybe only in the paid versions) you can set a night schedule for it to disable connectivity for a set time automatically. I have mine disable all data connections and go to silent mode from 12:30 to 8:30.

I tested this last night. Before I went to bed, I turned off WiFi (Data remained on). On the WiFi advanced settings I had the Keep Wi-Fi on During Sleep setting to "Always," which is the opposite of what people here have mentioned. I plugged in the charger. However, I have my Vivid set to remain on while on the charger. So it technically never went to sleep. (Makes a nice night light.) At 2:30 a.m. when I woke up, the WiFi was not on.
Tonight I will keep the same settings, but I will not put it on the charger (I'm testing the 3400 mAh Mugen extended battery). I will see if the WiFi comes on during the night.

I wonder if this is part of Googles data collection. I have gone through 3 vivid phones in the last 2 weeks (long story). I have seen this problem happen with no apps other than what came with the phone. My wifes phone (another vivid) does the same thing. If the phone is turned off for the night, turning the phone back on has the same results (mobile data is on). This seems to be a random problem.
When you allow Google's locaton service part of the message says that you are allowing Google to collect data even when no apps are running.
Just a thought.
I've been trying to figure out what's causing it...see my last couple posts here.

Ive been having an issue with my WiFi randomly turning itself on. Ill turn it off to save battery, then check it 30-60 minutes later and its turned itself back on. Ive scanned through other threads and most people say that its from dock mode and to go into dock mode, then go to the settings and disable "auto connect to wifi". I dont have a dock and have never had it in dock mode, but I manually went into dock mode to check check the settings and I dont even have that option in the settings menu. I didnt seem to have the problem (or at least didnt notice it) until after I upgraded to ICS using the OTA update. Is there just a setting that Ive overlooked someplace where I can fix the problem, an app thats got permission to do it that I didnt know about, or is it just a bug thats baked into ICS? Btw, my phone is Locked, Stock, and Unrooted.
Noticed this yesterday on rumfloat4 as well

I have the same frustrating issue, locked and stock here, upgraded to ICS with the RUU. Sometimes it will stay off for several hours, sometimes not even an hour. I haven't been able to pinpoint which app is causing this.
I believe that it maybe an ICS issue.
I have done a complete factory reset on the phone three times, and network and wifi turn on at exactly midnight.
SO far spoken to HTC customer support.....lol
They advised me yo take back to retailer and let them examine it...wtf???

I am curious how ICS determines "sleep". Is it phone sleep of human sleep? I also wonder if it is somewhat tied into automatic time settings. Say for instance you lose your signal during sleep, does ICS re-set the time and that triggers Wi-Fi turning on based on going setting the phone into a different time zone momentarily?
Just throwing a couple things out there in hopes it helps to solve the mystery.

I believe in later versions of GB, there was a distinct sleep setting that was separate from simply turning off the screen after a certain amount of time. As far as I can see, ICS did away with this and just sets the phone to sleep after a certain amount of time, which inherently turns off the screen.
Is this happening on new phones as well as refurbished ones? Whatever the problem is, its becoming annoying enough for me to return this phone and keep my Inspire.
Sent from my HTC Vivid
Yep, GB did have sleep time settings. That's why I was curious as to how ICS determines sleep.
Look at the permissions on HTC Sync. They're pretty intrusive as far as Wi-Fi settings. It may be worthwhile to go into each app and trying to force stopping each one one at a time that changes the Wi-Fi state at will.
---------- Post added at 06:53 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:21 PM ----------
Something else you can try is to go into the usage counter and clear the data from the wi-fi tab. Don't use Wi-Fi for a period of time then check if there was any usage and if there was it would be listed which apps used the data and how much they used. Some apps even allow you to access the settings from there as well.
Juice Defender or similar apps should be able to keep it off when you want it off.
The Airplane Mode also should keep WiFi turned off (as well as data) as long as you don't need to take phone calls while you sleep. Not to mention, it saves on the battery if you're not charging at night.
if anyone still interest on this , i found the solution !
on ics you go to:
settings
WLAN
Advanced
WLAN frequency band
and uncheck the auto set radio to use only 2.4 or 5gh
thats all
I just (excitedly) updated to Oreo, and now I am wishing I had not. I love the new features, but two really irritating issues presented themselves:
1) My screen is not tinted an awful color. It looks almost like my blue light filter is on (but it isn't - when I turn it on it gets HILARIOUSLY bad). Whites are not white. Adaptive mode is the worst, basic mode makes it tolerable but not good at all. My screen looked so much better before.
2) My always on display is wonky. It occasionally is so dim I cannot even see it. Sometimes it is fine, other time it's bad. No rhyme or reason to it (my lighting is the same so it's not adjusting to the environment).
Neither is these things were an issue before. Anyone else experiencing these things? Any idea how to fix either one?
Same issies
Horrible screen tint, opaque orange and the whites are awful. They work fine during initial bootup of the phone, then change. Contacted Verizon and Samsung, they are both aware and no fix as of yet to what the deal is. So do not update your note8, there's absolutely nothing exciting or great with the update. Waited 3+ months for this update, had it on my Z2 force and it was great, ABSOLUTELY blows on the note 8...

Try clearing the cache in recovery
You can do that by turning the phone off
Hold Volume Up+Power+Bixby and wait till the blue screen goes away
Navigate down with the volume keys and select Wipe Cache Partition with the power button.
Select Yes
Select Reboot System Now
If that doesn't help, I would either try a factory reset or flash Oreo with Odin.
I didn't do the OTA, but flashed the ROM with Odin instead and I have zero issues

Won't try the FDR option as that was never worked for any issues I've had in the past decsde. Always a waste of time and hassle. Unless that's a guaranteed fix by Samsung or Verizon I will wait for a software patch update or whatever else it is to fix this issue.
OP, did you have blue light filter enabled prior to Oreo update?
Furthermore, it seems to me like Samsung devices prefer having their original Android OS , meaning updates seems to make them not as true and stable as they originally were out of the box. Perhaps another little sly tactic for us users to upgrade hardware yearly.

I also factory reset with ever major update and never had a problem.
The bluelight filter is off, turning it on makes it way worse. I've never had to do a FDR with any phone for an update for over a decade, but those phones were all Motorola. This is my first Samsung and it's definitely a problem with the software causing this orange effect on all the white portions of the screen. Samsung and Verizon both confirmed this has happened to several so hopefully there'll be a fix soon as this is most annoying.
reset here too. no more issues.
I've always factory reset before taking a major update.
Do you have any substratum themes installed? Substratum seems to be buggy for oreo. I disabled all the them and my lockscreen went back to normal color.

Clearing Blue Light or Screen Tint issues with Oreo on Samsung S8
My friend had this issue on an S8 after Oreo. It started by dismissing a dialog box when launching Google Play Books then opening a book. The dialog was asking something about Blue Light mode. Dismissing apparently caused a default to Blue Light mode and Always Enable. But, we could not find a way to get back to those settings in Google Play Books. Using the system setting to turn off did not work and turning on made screen colors worse. So, we uninstalled the Google Play Books app, restarted phone. Still bad colors at this point. Next, we re-installed app. After opening app and then selecting a book the same dialog box appeared. We selected Settings this time and turned the slider to OFF for Blue Light mode. Now, the Blue Light mode is off for the app and the rest of the phone screens outside of the app. Everything seems like correct colors again.
Even if you do not use Google Play Books, maybe this process will unstick a setting for you.
I don't use or have never used Google play books. Never seen a prompt like that either

It's funny, I actually factory reset because the cache wipe didn't work. All looked well. Then after the initial setup (with a beautiful white background), my home screen popped up, and the screen immediately got all tinted. Some setting must have restored with my account! So I factory reset AGAIN, didn't import my setting or apps, then redid everything on my phone from scratch. Now it's fine. What a pain!

Thanks for posting this!! I had the same problem and couldn't figure why. After reading this, I went into Google Play Books and simply turned the night light off, and problem solved! It seems the nightlight setting in Google Play Books gets stuck in Oreo and overlays everything.
Is anyone having issues with their notifications not coming through, or coming in super late, or having the same notifications coming up over and over? I'm expecting all three problems, it seems to be happening with every app for me except for calls and text. I factory reset the phone but that didn't fix the issue. If I restart the phone, then all my notifications that haven't physically gone into the app to check start pouring in. No idea what could be causing the issue and it's really starting to piss me off. I have already sent my phone in for repair cause my LTE data stopped working for no reason. I don't think both issues are related as I do have LTE data after they replaced some part.
Would appreciate if anyone has any ideas.
Thanks.

Would appreciate if anyone has any ideas.
Thanks.

I had notification delays with gmail app, fixed it by turning off battery optimization for this specific app.

Is anyone having issues with their notifications not coming through, or coming in super late, or having the same notifications coming up over and over? I'm expecting all three problems, it seems to be happening with every app for me except for calls and text. I factory reset the phone but that didn't fix the issue. Some people may have battery saver on and this may cause late notifications. Also check in settings "auto sync", under accounts. I did have some late notifications issue with Gmail app and do know battery optimization usually is the cause, but it went away in couple of days after I bought the phone.
Thank you for the suggestions. I ended up turning on high performance mode. Let's see if that helps.

How'd this work out for you? This phone is horrible for notifications for me. It constantly doesn't send them until I actually pick up my phone, then suddenly I'll get 5-10 notifications at once. I've turned off EVERY bit of power saving that I can find. I only run in high performance mode 24/7 with all adaptive battery, power optimization, auto app sleep, etc turned completely off. I've also tried disabling all power saving and sleep in the specific app pages as well. I need to be more observant, but I think this is mostly with push notifications (ex, my 2FA app for work) rather than apps with timers to check for updates occasionally. I also have an issue with my wifi disconnecting while the screen is off sometimes which is highly annoying since my home presence detection is based on my phone being on the wifi, though last time it started doing that a reboot fixed it.
Unfortunately, a search proves that this is a widespread issue. At this point I've pretty much given up on this phone and am looking to replace it as soon as I find a suitable alternative. I'm just curious if it's a Samsung issue or a Pie issue that will occur on other phones as well.

Seems to be a general issue with android. Mine have gotten better recently. In addition to turning off battery optimization for any apps I want notifications for, i have done the following:
1. Wiped cache (under settings/app/storage), then rebooted into recovery mode and wiped the cache partition.
2. Gone into the setting and made sure apps I want notifications for are allowed to run in the background (settings/apps/select app for notifications/battery).
3. Allowed to run in background when on mobile networks (settings/apps/select app/mobile data/Allow Background Data Usage.
4. Gone into messages/settings/more settings/push message/changed toggle from "Prompt" to "Always".
Hope that helps.

Thanks, I'll give some of those a try. I also got a VZW update with the May security patch among other things right after I posted that, so we'll see if that helps at all also.

It's gotten better for me. I enabled high performance mode but I had to keep going in and checking it a couple days after still even though it was enabled. Been a couple weeks now and the notifications I was missing before all seems to be coming in fine now. Time will tell though I guess lol
Are you also having trouble with apps updating? That was another problem I was having where I'd see apps needing to update, I'd start "update all" one app would download and then get stuck at 99% and it would just stay like that for about 40mins and prevent the other apps from updating. Then finally when it would finish the next one would do the same. It would literally take hours upon hours for 12 apps to update when it should only take a couple mins. That issue seems to be fixed for me now too.
