[Q] Scrambled TV-like screen during boot or in CWM Recovery - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody. First of all, I'm quite new to the whole android world as I got my Galaxy S only three months ago. But I want to take full advantage of it's power so I decided to root it quite quickly. And now I had stumbled upon a problem and had no luck in finding a solution. That's the reason for this thread.
I went through other topics in this forum and it seems no one ever had a problem like this.
I've installed a RomKitchen custom XXJVB rom with Chainfire's kernel (CF Root XW XEE JVB v3.1 CWM3RFS) according to the instructions provided there - I flashed CWM 2.5 with Odin, then updated from CWM Recovery to Gingerbread.
In general, after doing this, everything works fine, the phone got super-fast, no issues there. However, now, during boot the screen displays a TV-like scrambled signal (like white noise... only it isn't white). It's hard to explain so I attached a picture.
It's like the whole screen is covered in coloured pixels. Sometime's a line of pixels moves. A similar thing happens when I try to boot into recovery - it boots but the display is all scrambled. The recovery menu works (when I use the volume buttons the pixels on the screen change their position) but I can't see a thing.
I tried virtually every solution I could think of - I wiped everything, did a factory reset, installed everything again. Still the same. When I revert to stock Froyo 2.2.1 this doen't happen anymore. But I prefer Gingerbread over Froyo.
So, have anyone here seen a similar problem and knows how to fix this? I would be very grateful for any pointers
EDIT: Silly me, guess I haven't searched hard enough :/ It seems I'm missing the new bootloaders.

Yeah, that's it.
Flash JVB stock with bootloader. Load your cooked rom onto internal sd card. Then flash the speedmod kernal in Odin with auto reboot unchecked. Pull the battery, then boot the phone into recovery, and flash your cooked rom.

I am getting this scrambled screen at the beginning of reboot after flash to serendipity VII. My phone will come up fine after the scrambled screen. But I cannot see the cwm page if I selected "recovery". Any help? Is this the bootloader being corrupted? Thx.

[Q] Flashed Batterymod, but...!

I just flashed a battery mod on my galaxy s.
But i think i downloaded the Wrong one!!! When i did a reboot, the process 'android.phone' stopped working. Mmmm.. OK.
Tried a factory reset through the 3 button menu. Well now it does not do anything, i can see the boot movie, but then i get a Black screen with an heartbeat on the vibration thingy.
I did not panic and tried to flash an other firmware. Well it did not work. I see the boot movie, but then the screen blacks out and nothing works......
I searched for this, but i didnt get a good answer on how to solve this.
So if anyone is kind enough to help me, and tell me what to do in simple steps.
The same here. I used version D for JP6 & the 2nd method.
I had to reflash the softwear.
Exact same problem with me, had to reflash. Could someone tell the guy who has the battery mod thread?

1st. You need to flash a fresh firmware I suggest a official one so you can download the latest JP6 from kies without knifing the registry. you can get those firmwares from http://www.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-i9000.htm but you need to register first. And here are the intructions how to flash http://samsunggalaxysforums.com/sho...and-and-flash-newer-firmware-to-your-Galaxy-S
2nd. After a succesfull flash go to recoverymode (shut down device, hold: vol-up, home and power)
wipe cache and do a factory reset just incase, and boot your device.
3rd. Install JP6 through Kies
edit:
BTW im a noob who did just this after i messed my phone to a state like mentioned in op So i dont take any responsibility about any damage you do to your phone. I did something like this and now i have official JP6 inside my sgs and its flying

[q] please help me

so today i upgraded to gingerbread 2.3.5 on my samsung captivate or i-897. it was all fine until i started to try the teamhacksung build 16 for ICS. i was trying to install it and somehow my phone locked up on me. everytime i try to boot up my phone it goes to galaxy s and just sits. i can get it into recovery and download but then odin will not pick it up? help?
that rom has a Q and A page. go there to ask questions about it. NOT the DEV PAGE. Q&A.try searching the thread. and reading it.
100% chance your problem has been asked at least 10 times.
i went there and searched im sorry it hasnt been thats why i posted a thing. so stop being so rude and help someone out really.

You need to be in download mode for odin to pick it up. Start odin first then with your phone off, hold in your up/down volume keys and plug in your usb cable.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using xda premium
telling you the proper place to post a question is not being rude. Im trying to help you find other people that have the same rom setup as you. they dont always look at other threads like this. they only care about THEIR ROM. so posting there, they would find your question... here they wont.
and the answer to your very first problem... if the rom install locks up (which it RARELY does) flash again.
**normally it "looks" like it locks up but the user is actually impatient, or the install script doenst program the status bar very well and it looks like its not doing anything although it is.
and first boot after flashing can take upto 10 mintues at boot animation.
ive done all of this plenty of times, ive even read how to create them. and i know you do as well. ive done all the odin i can but it got stuck at the galaxy s boot screen like the black one with white lettering and the i897 tag too. but it wont go past, and now wen i plugged it in it bricked so i have no idea wat to do now and i love this phone to death.

Can't you just flash something from recovery? You probably put some ROM on your sd at some point. And if not, you can do that with USB from recovery
Sent from my CM9 ICS i897 Captivate
Once you didn't get past the boot screen you should have three buttoned to recovery and flashed the from again. It happens quite often when you go to THS ICS or CM7. So if your not truly bricked which you shouldn't be unless you used a Odin with boot loaders then just used Odin and flash speed mod kernel or another kernel that will give you the correct cwm recovery. Then BEFORE trying to reboot flash the ICS ROM, then when it finishes flash it a second time BEFORE REBOOTING, then flash gapps, then reboot.
What happens is that the first time you try to go to cm7 or cm9 it basically flashes the kernel and cwm recovery from I can tell, then the second flash will be able to get you through all the boot up. Plus wait a while without touching it and it will come up. It takes a while on the first ever flash to it.

how can i put it on through recovery? and my usb debugging isnt on my fone just spazzed when i was loading up ics nd now its softbricked.
i actually just unbricked but i am still stuck at the galaxy s sgh-i897 screen thats black and white.

[Q] Stuck on boot screen, 3 hours in.

Hello!
I know that I should have done a lot more research before jumping in but here is what happened. I have also looked everywhere in the captivate forums with no luck. I upgraded to stock Gingerbread from Froyo a while back, yesterday I decided that I wanted to root, which I accomplished with Odin. The rooting went just fine, after that I wanted to flash ICS Slim onto my phone, which I soon realized I needed clockworkmod recovery for. After research found out that it doesn't work using ROM manager so I followed a guide to install it and here is where things went sour, following the guide I installed Hardcore’s SpeedMod Kernel it rebooted and it started normally, passing the AT&T bootscreen but now I am completely stuck on the screen after saying "GALAXY S SGH-l897" and on bottom "SAMSUNG". I am able to access the downloading screen and I just do not want to do anymore damage than I have already.
TL;DR: I'm stuck on boot after installing Hardcore's speedmod kernal, able to get on download screen, don't want to do anymore damage. Long story short, what can I do to repair my phone to a usable state?
Google "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery to Samsung Captivate" 3rd link down to see the guide that I used.
Thank you for taking the time to help!
I think hardcore speed mod kernel is for froyo/eclair that's why you're boot looping, but clockwork mod should work. Try using the three button combo to get into recovery and flash whatever captivate ICS ROM you chose, assuming you have the file in your internal SD.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA
thanks for the reply, unfortunately I don't have any ROM on my internal at all, is there a way to flash a ROM from odin or another software? Or do I have to use the clockworkmod recovery to flash it on?
You can mount USB storage from recovery, so transfer the ROM to your sd card that way
Sent from my ICS Samsung Captivate
Edit: removed cause you beat me to it
Yes, there is a list of stock Odin one click packages in the development forum stickies.

I am trying to mount the USB Mass Storage from ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.0, but nothing will appear onto my computer, if I could get this to mount could I flash 2.3.5 using Kies Mini? Would the wipe data/factory reset help me here?
Try reinstalling samsung drivers to get your phone recognized. Since you're on 2.3.5 already, Kies will not let you re-download because it assumes you're on the latest firmware already. Use the Odin one click package. Or heimdall one click.
Don't rush. If you're still unsure keep searching. Read thoroughly so errors won't happen
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA
No wiping will not help you lol. Its better to flash back to 2.3.5 and start fresh.

Thanks for all of the help! I was finally able to mount the phone and transfer the rom, installed it after with little trouble.

I've got the same problem with my phone, but I arrived there thru different means.. I used an app called Kernel Manager Light, and believe I tried flashing something called like Fastloader, or Fast boot loader.. something.. anyways, looked good for a minute, while it flashed it, then rebooted my phone & since then, it doesn't load past a screen that reads "GALAXY S" then smaller and below it "SGH-I897".. then across the bottom, "SAMSUNG".. Totally stuck there, for DAYS. I've been reading these forums for what seems like ever, and this is the closest scenario I've found to my own situation.
I can't get my phone into download mode no matter what I do. I can't get into it thru ADB. All I get is that screen.
In ADB, when I type C:/ADB devices, it will sometimes recognize my device (tho more often than not it won't) and even whwn it does, as soon as I try to access my phone thru ADB, it just freezes up too.. I hit enter, and the cursor drops down to the next line, but nothing ever happens from there.
Someone please help..?

!!! HELP !!! I'm very wet behind the ears when it comes to this!!! HENSE my username. this started after connecting my cap. to a pc with intentions of exporting some pics. that initial (1st) and Only pc notification about detecting a usb device, my cousin sitting down at the monitor clicked outside the bubble message. Now from this point on which was several attempts i would get could recognize device msg. I did not know this was gonna be the results, i can actually remember noticable gliches and flaws progressively worse and worse. icons looking like they had a bulb burning out, awful lag in dialer and or any commands. I know now after reading similar posts my attempts to back-up,recover, i did several restore sessions, wiped data & system in a last ditch effort to get my phone back! i was on the road out of my state. not a comforting situation. I'D REALLY APPRECIATE THE HELP! I'M LEARNING AS I CRAWL ALONG HERE, WITH THAT BEING SAID I'M NOT FAMILIAR WITH ALOT OF THE LINGO! symbols , abbreviations , etc:crying:
Ur post is confusing...
What firmware are u on -- Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread ??
Did u get ur pics copied off of the phone and to the pc. Under the Settings in ur phone is a USB connection setting to select for when u want to transfer stuff to ur pc.
If ur phone is still jacked up from the multiple backup and restores u did, then u may just have to do a Factory Reset from the Settings menu to get things back to normal...but do understand that that means all ur pics and other stuff will get erased, etc.
If the Factory Reset doesn't work, then I would say get into download mode and flash a Stock firmware (GB 2.3.5 i897ucKK4 being the latest official) and then proceed forward from there however u want.
See the stickied threads in the Q &A and Dev forums for help with flashin to Stock and Dev Roms.

Soft brick= a FAILURE of the device that can be reverted by the user
Hard brick= a FAILURE of the device that has to be reverted via external devices see jtag
Superbrick= a FAILURE of the device where the only solution the service center and a replacement of the component that malfunctions.
Pixel salad = a problem of the graphics unit or the screen to display correctly the image and put instead random colored pixels on some areas of the screen or the whole screen.
This is my interpretation of those issues everyone can correct it if he thinks that those expansions are incorrect.
Hope it helped you understanding few of those issues.

Hi, I flashed N7000ZSLPF ICS with bootloader and rooted afterwards. Everything was perfect until i decided to flash cm9 nigthly signed.zip and did a direct reboot. Now nothing happens when i try to turn the phone on
What kind of brick is this? Can somebody please tell me ?
Is there any possibilities to get the phone fixed?
Thank you all for your answers allready

I'm not 100% sure, but performing a flash under lpf isn't recommended. How did you root lpf after flashing? And when you say "did a direct reboot" what do you mean? Also when you say doesn't turn on at all, do you mean no display whatsoever or enters Samsung boot loop? Are you able to enter recovery or download mode?

You should have read the warning about LPx kernels (LP1, LP5, LP6, LPY, LPF)
Wiping or flashing in recovery will probably cause superbrick.

The way to go from ANY non-CM9-based ICS Rom to a CM9-based Rom is via Gingerbread.
You should've first used PC Odin to go back to GB, root your Rom, then flash CM9.
You have most probably superbricked your phone.

Cannot make phone start, stuck at Semaphore logo / animation

Hi,
As the title says I have small problem. I bought my SGS1 with custom rom and kernel flashed into it already - sometimes it shows wrong time, went into recovery mode without my knowledge, had some problems with apps. Today I pressed Power and chose reboot - now I am stuck at animation that appears after logo kernel Semaphore. Of course I tried to look in other threads, I found a lot of them but still I cant figure out how to do it. You see, I never did it before and it's all hokus-pokus to me even tho I read stuff here at the forums. I managed to get into downloand and recovery mode using 3 button combo What do I do now? It seems way too complicated for newbie like me, every post isn't explaining it enuff for me. Can someone help me or at least give some tips, clues?
Things I got installed are Android 4 .0.4, 3.0.8 Semaphore ics 1.1.2s.
Thanks in advance guys

Get in recovery, clear cache and dalvik cache and reboot.
It will take a while to full boot cause it will have to rebuild it's cache but should work from there.
If it doesn't, You'll need more stuff but we'll get to that then.

Okay. I wiped cache and dalvik. Now I'm waiting on animation screen for 30 minutes. I'll let you know what happens after 1 hour.
By the way does any of those problems could be related to low battery? I had like 20% last time I rebooted my phone and problems started.
One more thing is - I don't have memory microSD card - guy sent me 16GB one but it doesn't work. Can we fix it without it? I wanted to buy a new one eventually
EDIT: Okay, one hour passed after I wiped cache. Everything was stuck on animation but suddenly, after I walked out of phone for a 5 minutes it stopped - everything was gone, I couldn't Power it or use 3 button combo. I think that's cuz battery went low. I plugged it into charger, we'll see if it charges. I hope so. EDIT2: Yeah, that was battery. Still can enter Recovery.

Did you recently remove the sd card? If so, try booting with it in your cell.
If that doesn't work, Mount your phone through recovery to backup your stuff on PC (like pics).
Now you'll need Odin KK4 without bootloaders (found in the stickies). As will as corn kernel and Odin 1.87. And finally a JB rom you wanna use on your internal sd.
Get your phone in download mode and flash KK4 (stock GB). Let it do us it's magic, once done, make sure it boots up fine. Then get back in recovery to flash corn kernel with odin 1.87 (gotta put it in the PDA slot). Finally, follow the FULL instructions provided by the ROM dev you chose.
