Newb needing some major help! - Nook Color General

Hi guys, first post here, but have been lurking and reading for a couple weeks now. I have my NC autonootered with autonooter 3.0, and want to explore things further. What I would like to do is try a sd bootable version of cm7 so if it's not what I need, I can easily go back to what I have currently. I've checked some guides and thought I understaood, but every time I try to set up a sd card with an image and then put in the nook, the nook will not boot with the sd in it. removing the sd card solves the boot problem. I've done wii mods, xbox mods, and dabble in lots of different stuff, but this nook stuff has me baffled. another question i have is I've seen references to things like partition 4 on sd card and am not sure what that implies and if that is where maybe I'm going wrong? Sorry for the long post, and also sorry for asking what has been asked numerous times, but my searches did not yield a solution. please help!

ok maybe i spoke too soon. went back and started from scratch and now have cm7 running from sd.

What app do I use to make my phone act as a router and/or tether? I can't find Tether Wifi in the market... is there another app you recommend? I do not live in a 3g area... this would be only used at a beach house with no internet... I realize edge is slower but its better than nothing. Is this possible?

Any advice on pimping out the G1? I saw a video on youtube where the guys dialer was large rectangular buttons, maybe purple too... how do you get this? (better keyboard?) I've been looking at Teds Hero Theme, waiting on a version for Cyan 3.6.8.1. Do I need to delete open home after/before a theme, does not seem like it will be of any use after I do this hero theme from Ted, right?

What is the recovery.img file that is used in that manual, and do I need another one if I am using Cyanogens (v3.6.8.1) stable rom?
-2-
I saw at one point a thread that had the names of common items and what they meant but can't find it (ie, why I dont know why what a img file is or does). Can anyone shed some light on this, or know where that thread is?
-3-
The manual also made it seem like I needed to load a JF build. After my root I went straight to cyanogen. Does this matter? Did I lose something by not doing JF first? Is there a backup anywhere (other than the files I moved from my SD card to my computer before formatting it)?
-4-
Do I need to load any other cyanogen things on my phone? On his thread it lists things like Audio resources, pimped out recovery image, etc.

Finally, I need to partition my card to take advantage of apps2sd on his rom.... what is the best way to do this? I really need help on this one.

Its fine that you went straight to cyanogens rom. Its good to load cyanogens new recovery (1.4), its in the pimped out recovery and all instructions are in there. There are different ways to partition a sd card, the way I do mine is thru Ubuntu (tuturial is in my sig). Wifi tether for root users is what allows your phone to act as a router. Theres alot of cool apps, you just got to play with them to figure them out or narrow down what your trying to find out. And theres a search feature, use that or be flamed if you ask repeated questions.

Get cyan pimped out recovery. The instructions are fool proof how to dow it.
-2-

Look in the informative thread sticky in the dev subforum

No, it's cool that you went straight to cyan. See when that guide was written those were the most popular roms that's why they are there.
-4-
Do I need to load any other cyanogen things on my phone? On his thread it lists things like Audio resources, pimped out recovery image, etc.
I would load the Audio resources since those are your ringtones and notification tones. Though if you plan on making your own it isn't really necessary. As for the recovery image you should definitely download. The instructions are easy and simple so just read.

Always search first, and if you can't find it search again. Don't just search 1 subforum. Believe me the answers are out there.
Yeah, I promise I do search, but again I just kinda seem to go from one thing to another and then I realize there are several ways to do the same thing.
Regarding the partition, no offense taken... but I'm not comfortable enough with the process so thought I would try and get more guidance than what I can find in the several threads with different methods.

I see where you are coming from since I too am a noob. So I'm guessing you're rooted and have a custom rom installed already. Soo here is the guide I used to partition my SD card. It is a very, self-explanatory guide. I have no computer programming background and this guide made it seem easy to me. You're going to need cyan's pimped out recovery. Like I said just find that thread and it has the directions to install it. As for apps, I found what I thought was cool browsing the app forum here and on androidcommunity.com

Exactly that... its a backup of basically your entire phone from the point that you created the backup, if you happen to flash another ROM and you don't like it, or it breaks, you can hit the restore option and return to this moment in time for you phone.

bare with me ONE MORE Q RE: NANDROID
I have created a nandroid backup, copied the folder from my SD card to my computer for emergencies.
If I add a new ROM and wipe.... how would I restore my phone? The backup I created would be erased from the phone right? And the backup on my computer would be from another rom, does that matter (assuming no, but I dont know the first thing about how to restore my phone from doing a wipe).
Thank you all... incredible forum.

when you wipe everything on your sd remains only data from the phones internal is wiped, so as long as you didnt delete it from sd after backing up to computer your good. Also worse come to worse you can use a card reader to get it on there..
As far as your settings and stuff reseting, thats why some people get to lazy to wipe you can try my backuppro (i use this) or backup for root (dont know to much about) to back up your settings, bookmarks, sms, and contacts if youd like. Note though that your contacts and all that will come back after signing back into google, and your apps will also remain on the sd..
^ ahh... completely forgot that the SD card was left intact after a wipe. That makes perfect sense and thank you thank you. I have backup for root now but will go to the market and try your app. THank you!

[Q] I have totally messed up my Nook Color

Ok so I have totally messed my brand new device, this is second day I have had it. I got it yesterday and first thing I did was install DeeperBlues HC v4 on my eMMC. It was easy. I had to use Autonooter first. I was on 1.0.1. Well after playing with it all night. I started to not like the functioning of apps on the platform. They were great but was in my opinion, no greater than when it was just rooted. So I decided to bring it back to stock. I accidently placed wrong sd card in it, the one with Autonooter on it. Now when it boots up it says Loading.... then I get the word ANDROID in lower left had side of screen in landscape. I am a noob when it comes to this. Now I flash and mess with my phones rom and themes and kernels all the time kind of a junkie, but this is no walk in the park.
Please can someone help me.

I think you rooted your Nook which could be a fine thing. If that's not what you want, getting it back to stock is very easy.
Here's a link: http://nookdevs.com/Flash_back_to_clean_stock_ROM
The tricky part is to get the timing right so that you get the 8 failed boots (that took me a while). If it looks like it's about to boot up up, hold down the power button till it goes off (at least I think that's what I did). If you have adb installed (or install it) you can get around that.

Is this going to help me. My original firmware was 1.0.1.
Just grab the CWR 1.1 Recovery image from the development forum. Burn that onto an SD Card and reboot. Wipe data boot system cache and flash. done.
Find rootpack in dev section, write that to sd card, add the flashable restore to stock zip from samuelhalffs restore to stock thread in the dev section to your sdcard, boot to sdcard with the rootpack on it, flash the restore to stock zip after formatting system and data. Wala, fixed! All info can be found in my dummies guide to my nook won't boot a few threads down.
Thank you Thank you Thank you. This worked. I now have my Nook back. Thanks.

Try this Thread, "Dummies Guide to Fixing 'My Nook Won't Boot'""
This should work and get you back to stock so you can start all over.

[Q]

Ok, so I promise I've tried to search for a solution, but I really don't even know where to start. Please let me apologize if this has been discussed at exhaustion, but the guys I've asked so far have not seen this issue. Perhaps some of you have.
I'm going to list EVERYTHING I can think of that I've done. Please tell me what I've done wrong.
1. After picking up my NC last night, I tried running the Non-Root SDcard method of running Froyo to try it out. I tried running Rom Manager but wasn't able to do much. I tried Flashing CWM and feel that might have been a mistake. Hopefully, someone can reassure me that was not a problem.
2. I was unable to get GApps (Market most importantly) to show.
2a. After Flashing CWM and removing the SD card, I found that if I tried to force the 1.1.0 update, it would error out and put me into Recovery. That was something I assumed would not be possible, since I was of the understanding that the Non-root SDcard method was restricted solely to the SD card and didn't actually touch the Onboard memory.
3. Assuming the SDcard method might be limited to not having Market access and was more of a pre-root preview. I moved on to actually Root my NC. I did the whole, SD-image method and let my NC auto-reboot. The method I followed didn't mention anything about skipping the Google Account step. So, I tried that with some difficulty and had to back out. I never tried the whole Youtube account sync. I accessed the Market, but none of my downloads will actually go through. Tried multiple reboots, but no luck.
4. I tried to root again to see if something went awry. This time, I didn't have to go through the Android Setup steps??? But, I went ahead and logged into YouTube. Then, I went to Gmail Accounts>Account Setting, but each time it just causes my NC to reboot. Market still doesn't actually download anything.
I know it probably seems like I'm trying to many things, but I'm trying to discover the source of the problem, but behind each corner is another problem. I can't think of anything I'm doing wrong. I'm becoming very agitated. This was supposed to be a simple process, but it is not at all right now.
5. Now, as a last ditch effort, I tried to UnRoot my phone with the 8-Boot-Interruptions method. Problem is, instead of restoring the device to stock, it puts me back into CWM recovery.
Is it possible that Flashing CWM has irreversibly imprinted itself on my NC and I can not get past it to actually move forward with the Market and such? Is there any way to reverse the Flashing of CWM?
Thanks a ton in advance.
My guess is CWM writes to the system folder no matter if it has booted from SDCard or not...
Try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931720
I believe that is the correct set of instructions, if not, my apologies.
migrax
For reference, I'm running B&N 1.0.1 and used auto-nooter-2.12.25.
It sounds like you might want to navigate overt to the development forum and do a bit of reading. I'm unsure why you flashed CWM onto your nook, but everything is easily fixable. It really depends on what state you want your nook to be in when it's all said and done. There's a thread in the development forum about restoring back to stock, doing so will remove cwm and let you start over. This is probably the best way to go as the current state of yur nook is questionable. Once you have stock working your best bet for the most functionality is rooting, and the easiest way to do that is autonooter. Definitely read the threads more than once before attempting any of this so you will know what to expect before it happens.

Just read through that link. Looks very promising. Dont think I'll have a chance to do it tonight, but I will report back ASAP. I'm hoping to get back to stock and then go straight through the root process as intended. I really feel that my unintentional CWM Flashing experience is the root of my frustration.
I'm hopeful that this will be the end of it.
Thanks again.
Thanks a BUNCH!!! It all worked out. Getting the .img out of the .tar.gz was the most difficult, but once I figured out how to use 7-zip, all was well.
I'm now rooted and have full Market/Gmail access. I'm a very happy boy

want to flash cm7

I want to flash cm7 the last time I tried it it worked fine until I turned off my nook and it would not come on. I think I messed up my boot sector, which I am still hoping to find a way to fix it if it happens again. I just took it back to the store. Since rom manager now has the new clockworks mods do I have to boot that from my sd card, or can I just put the cm7 on my sd card and install it? Plus if it breaks how do I fix it?
I had something similar happen to me. It wouldn't boot. I thought it was screwed so I went to sleep mad as hell. I woke up and it was working, and hasn't had a problem since.

why didn't you ask BEFORE you returned it? b&n is going to start locking these down if people keep returning them for screwing them up.
just read one of the many brick threads... they are everywhere.

Maybe thats a lesson to not mess with something you can't fix...

[Q] Stuck at Cyanoboot screen

Hello I've had a Nook HD+ working since August beautifully, I thought to get one for my sister and picked one up over the weekend.
Today I decided make it like mine, ie take off the B&N interface and try for a most vanilla like jelly Bean.
These are the instructions I followed last time....
"1. Download leapinlar's NookHDplus-bootable-CWM-6028-for-stock-4GB-rev4-(05.15.13).zip
2. Extract the zip above and burn the img to a 4GB or larger microSD card
3. After burning, copy cm-10.1-20130512-UNOFFICIAL-ovation-emmc.zip and gapps-20130301-jb-signed.zip back to the microSD card
4. Place the microSD card back to the Nook HD+ and boot it
5. Do a backup for the stock ROM
6. After backup is done, do data wipe/factory reset
7. Flash the cm-10.1-20130512-UNOFFICIAL-ovation-emmc.zip and gapps-20130301-jb-signed.zip"
I made a mistake this time around, I used cm-10.2-20131031-UNOFFICIAL-ovation-sdcard.zip by accident instead of the EMMC version. Now when I power the unit on, with no SD card it keep rebooting at the Nook screen. With a now corrected SD card it gets stuck at the cyanoboot screen, it dims after a minute but then still just stuck there.
How do I go about fixing this? Thank you in Advance....
Ok so I rebuilt the SD card and it looks like it's kinda back to normal. I did a wipe and then wrote....
cwm-recovery-ovation-3.zip
cm-10.2-20131031-UNOFFICIAL-ovation-emmc.zip
gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip
Rebooted and now it gets stuck at that spinning logo, the logo never goes to the correct aspect ration. Screw it I'm done for today.
Tomorrow I'll try doing a restore to factory defaults and try the same steps again, if it should fail again, then I'll restore, wipe, and try the exact same files I used on mine. Unless someone has a better guide/method to use....
Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you!
You need to get back to pure stock so that everything can be done over. Go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature and use your already burned CWM SD to flash a plain stock ROM from item 6. Also do a factory wipe with it.
Then start over, but use the dummies guide for CM10.1.
Edit: I did not see your second post when I wrote this. But I think the advice still holds.
Sent from my BN NookHD+ using XDA Premium HD app
OK go tit all settle! I used your stock image, booted up to normal, then went back, wiped, and did the usual files. The latest file cm-10.2-20131031-UNOFFICIAL-ovation-emmc Gave me keyboard errors, so I went back to the old file I used previously on mine, cm-10.1-20130615-UNOFFICIAL-ovation-emmc, and everything seems perfect.
Thank you for your help! You are a man among men!

I'm trying to follow your method of going back to stock on emmc, but I can't get my nook into recovery. I have re-made my SD card multiple times and the times my HD+ boots off the sd card (mine is one of those thats hit or miss), it will stay stuck on the Cyanoboot screen. If I can't get into recovery somehow, I'm hosed. Any ideas? I want to avoid having to bring it in for 1 year warranty replacement.

i find it hard to believe we are both just screwed. Maybe I'll try and find a different sd card and give that a try. Ugh. This is most bogus.
Hello everybody,
I have even worse problem with cyanoboot - I've bought used NOOK HD+ after someone tried to install cyanogenmod on it, and except holding cyanoboot at screen with an SD card (that I've prepared accordingly leapinlar's page), it has next issues:
1) there is absolutely no response, when I try to turn it on without an SD card;
2) when the SD was untouched by me, it had some other cyanoboot installed on it but with this version nothing in the cyanoboot menu worked: there was a menu and errors in the console every time I've done everything. But, at least, it loaded.
And I have no SD card bigger than 1 GB.
And, question ahead - is it some easy way to figure out whether my B&N is bricked?
Regards

Good luck to you, sir.
Do you mean you are going to try another SD card by making it bootable with CWM? Or are you going to try verygreen's no-emmc build and run your tab directly off the SD? Because I have tried more than a few SD cards for the former to no effect.

I'm in Afghanistan, so an exchange is not happening until my next R&R. I'll probably be able to save enough for a Note 10.1 or Nexus 10 atleast by then.
