To upgrade to GB or not via OTA - HTC Incredible S

Just wonder if I should upgrade to GB if HTC push it via OTA. I remember the old day when I was using Hero, I was told not to upgrade to 2.1 directly via OTA since that will also install a new bootloader which will make my phone unable to be rooted again.
Is the same also apply to IS? I know we don't have a root method for S-ON phones so far. But if later someone finds an exploit in the original firmware, the new GB ROM might have already fixed that. So root might only be possible in the original firmware. And those who upgraded might be busted.
Am I correct here?

yes mate you are correct, but rather like to see this kind of questions in the general section where they belong

up-ing by goldcard

How? could you please tell me kindly?

Unbrand Nexus One

Hi All,
A friend of mine has a Vodafone uk Nexus One (whilst I have a Three UK Desire lol), and I used to have a T-Mobile UK G1. One of the things you could do with that (and from experiences with friends' Heros) was create a goldcard and flash a google unbranded image.
Question is, can that be done with the Nexus one? I know how to create goldcards, but I don't see any RUU exe files anywhere. Obviously he'd like to get froyo asap and avoid the voda delays in future too.
So, he doesn't want to do custom roms, just would like to have the option of stock roms and ideally OTA updates when google give them not when voda mess about with them and eventualy release them. He doesn't want to void the warranty though, so as I understand it, fastbooting a .img file is out as he'd have to unlock the bootloader?

Hmm, unrooted nexii one are able to flash froyo without a goldcard, no idea about branded handsets. I'd suggest finding the link for frf91(latest froyo build) somewhere around these boards, chucking it on the sdcard as update.zip and hope for the best.
Maybe get the noradio .zip first, just incase it goes terribly wrong. I doubt it will though, it will either work or not flash at all, so give it a try.
We tried using a goldcard with an frf91 universal rom (i.e. the direct from google signed zip), but it failed verifiation on the phone's update system. I'm assuming RUU checked for goldcard but the standard recovery ignores goldcards
Anyone got any more suggestions?
Root the phone / unlock the bootloader, and flash whatever you want. There is no "unbranding", since Nexus isn't branded. It's just that there is no stock update that is based on your version (EPF21?), so no update will be executed.
He can try the "non-voiding-warranty" root, though it's specified to work for Froyo. If it doesn't work for him - he can try the PASSIMG.zip way of upgrading to some version that will allow root. If that fails too - oh well... Either root the usual way, unlocking bootloader, or accept the fate.

You can try the tutorial at http://bloginblack.de/2010/07/how-t...e-google-nexus-one-from-epf30-to-froyo-today/
I had same issues as my N1 was EPF30 build probably a EU one and the above tutorial helped me get all the new updates OTA, because to the best of my knowledge Froyo is not yet available OTA in EU, atleast that's what i found in google

[Q] Froyo 2.2.1 - Rooted Version?

Hi All,
Was just looking into the prospect of rooting and I came across a post that basically responded to a guy asking whether subsequent OTA/Official updates would revert the root. the response was:
this might well happen. To be sure that this won't happen, don't update, or wait for a rooted version of the update to be released

It's the bit in bold that's got me wondering. I have my Nexus running stock ROM but rooted (with locked bootloader). I have the problem with the WiFi which 2.2.1 claims to fix.....and I just wasting time thinking that this update might get released as a rooted version so I can just install and not worry about losing root?
Any help gratefully received.
Cheers
1. Already released as a rooted version (check the ROM section)
2. Really easy to root with rageagainsthtecage ...
Right I can ask you the question then......with the rageagainstthecage root method, is there anyway to install the update without flashing a new ROM...I'm ok with stock.
If you're rooted - install custom recovery and install pre-rooted ROM.
Or try to apply the stock update through stock recovery, if you have it.

Just install the OTA - it will unroot you.
then root with "rage"
check out modaco, he's got frg83 completely stock with root. just flash using custom recovery. I didnt do a wipe so everything stayed the same just updated to 2.2.1 and yes it seems the wifi issue was fixed.
Just get the stock rooted from geo411m's rom!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=559
The links here will also do it in 2 steps from custom recovery:
http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8419658&postcount=194
The geo411m link is a deodexed ROM and the one in the link above is not deodexed. Either way you get the fixes of the newer version.
Going forward, think of it this way with future updates:
If you apply the OTA, intending to lose root and then re-root, you always run the risk that all avenues of rooting (other than unlocking the bootloader) have been closed by the new ROM.
If you apply an update repacked for custom recovery, you don't have to worry whether the root exploit you used last time will still be valid.

Thanks for that - honestly not sure why I didn't think of it
Ahh found a flaw in my plan.....it seems that verification fails on my Vodafone Nexus One (UK). I'm guessing there isn't an upgrade path from Vodafone's Froyo update to this yet. Suppose I'll have to wait for Voda's 2.2.1

[Q] Gingerbread 2.3 OTA Manual install?

OK so I downloaded OTA_Vivo_Gingerbread_S_HTC_WWE_2.12.405.7-1.36.405.1_release_1877251m0fkulovs00nwzq.zip
From here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063062
Now is it safe to do a manual install by going into recovery?
My Incredible S is S-ON from Bell stock ROM.
Please let me know! Thanks!
Couldn't wait... tried it
Got an error saying "Invalid Operation" and automatically reboots.
Damnit!
Rename to pb32img.zip (or pg see downgrade guide in dev) and than boot to hboot, could do the trick. If that doesn't work you have to install by the ruu and perhaps a goldcard.
Greets
Help me understand what this ROM is.
What I am assuming is that this is an official unbranded/unmodified ROM directly from HTC with no carrier modifications. That means it has no carrier-specific apps? I would imagine this is the best ROM to install for those with unlocked devices or who wish to be rid of any carrier bloatware?
Who gets this update over-the-air? Did they purchase a factory unlocked Incredible S directly from HTC?
I've seen a lot of people asking, but have yet to see an answer posted. Has anybody succeeded in installing the WWE OTA update on an S-On Bell IS? Is a goldcard required? Also, is there a radio difference between Bell IS and European IS, since they use different bands? And lastly, if so, does it cause any noticeable issues?
I'd like to try it, but was wondering if anybody else had first!
I tried could not on bell
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA App
Yeah I have a Bell Incredible S that I unlocked to use on MTS... so what could Bell have done exactly that would prevent goldcards from working?
hi i also have an IS on the bell network as well. however my phone is unlocked and i am currently using it on rogers so im guessing i'll never get the udate. and i have no other option rather than to manually intall it. so i would also like to try this, at least to see if it will work on my device. im just wandering how to go about in doing this. if you could give me a step by step instruction, i would appreciate it. let me know if i need tools like a gold card or something as such. thank you.

[Q] Unrooting my HTC One

Hi Guys, I just got the phone (international/ non-carrier version) yesterday. Updated it to 4.3, and rooted it, following the guide from HTCOneRoot.com.
Everything is fine and dandy, as when I rooted my previous phone. But in my sheer eagerness, I didn't find out that the 4.4 was available also.
I now have a rooted phone, and I can't update it, as it goes directly to TWRP recovery when I try to install. I guess this is what it's supposed to do?
From what I can read you cannot install OTA when you have rooted your phone.
So I tried looking up how to unroot it. But this seems like a rather difficult project, and I am not sure I understand. From what I read I need to download a RUU, to install a stock rom(?) and I tried looking up this, but there are tons to select from, and I haven't the slightest clue which matches my phone. Can anyone be of assistance, as to how I can revert my root and update to 4.4, so I can root my phone with the latest android, instead? I'm not really interested in getting a custom rom on my phone.
Guess I should've read more about rooting before doing it, as I'm kind of a novice, but I'm more a trial and error kinda guy .
Thanks.
Edit: Or should I just find a custom "stock" KitKat ROM, and install that, from my current position? Is that even possible?
Sort of an answer

Hey man, so to find the right ruu go here htcdev webiste, go under kernel source code and then choose device as the one and then choose carrier and download one of the matching ones.
For the other stuff I'm in the same boat as you. Just waiting for answers...I would try looking at youtube and type how to unbrick htc one and try those first. Didn't work for me but might for you.

Thanks. I'll look that up.
I am not bricked, as the situation is now. I just have a rooted phone, working with 4.3. And I want to upgrade to 4.4.
So I guess I have to choose HTC as carrier? I live in Denmark and am unsure whether to choose EU or EU NFC as region? Also what kernel version do I want to download? I am somewhat unsure what to do next.

Do a fastboot getvar all, and choose the RUU that matches your MID and your CID
I've only rooted my phone so far. From what I understand I can just install a "custom 4.4" from this point, right?

Can I Take any verizon updates go back to previous versions for future possbl Unlock.

https://phandroid.com/2017/08/30/verizon-galaxy-s8-faster-face-recognition-update/
Does anyone know if I can take the current Verizon software update From Sept 1st NRD90M.G950USQU1AQGL. I Will I be able to revert back to the original stock OS version with Odin if I update it? Does SamPWND work on this or any updated OS software. I would like to get an update to allow me to use Bixby voice, the stock Rom is missing that, is there any safe update to take.
Reason I ask is that normally you need to stay on the original stock OS or downgrade if there is ever a bootloader unlock method ever found. I tried looking for this kind of info couldn't find it. Usually there is a thread with stock roms with this info but I can't find any. Any suggestions?

I took the first 2 Ota updates and flashed back to original firmware without problems before I switched to unlocked firmware. Sorry for the late response.

You should have no issue doing so as long as they don't mess with the bootloader
