Hi all,
I bought a second hand SGS and it has 2.2 froyo
How can i put it back to normal 2.1 android please?
i dont want root or anything...
can any1 help? ill put a few quid in your paypal if you can take the time to guide me through it?
Well, you could always just goto settings and initiate a factory reset... You'll lose root and revert back to the stock eclair 2.1 ROM.
where is that option?
i found sd card and phone storage and
internal sd card format option
i notice another option in privacy that says factory data reset. but that looks like it might be just personal data reset not full reset thingy,
if what your saying works i will be very happy!

Think about this for a second....a factory reset is somehow magically going to pull stock 2.1 out of .....where exactly?
the OP is going to have to Odin back to stock....plenty of info here on how to do this....
what is Odin?
the search functions are down at the moment so i cant search the forums
Maybe you can help mate? please!
Its laggying badly this 2.2

Why else would it be called FACTORY reset ? It would be the firmware provided with the phone, which would be eclair as opposed to the froyo build he received on a rooted second hand phone.
The option is in settings-> privacy-> factory data reset
You can't get Froyo without flash to a froyo ' factory' firmware. In this case, A beta firmware. Whenever you flash to a new firmware, you lost your old firmware completely.

yeah i guessed it wouldnt be that simple.
guys can you give me a clue?
im thinking this: see if im anywhere near.
download odin
connect phone to pc
restart holding the volume down, power and home
flash with original files - im having trouble finding these
will my samsung be 2.1 and non rooted after that?
will i be able to re-root if i need to? ie to apply lagfix

1. Download odin,
2. Download the needed firmware files from Samsung firmwares,
3. Phone off. Vol down, menu, power
4. Add pit512/513 (can't remember which), pda, modem, csc in odin
5. Tick re-partition
6. Connect phone to pc
7. Click start and wait for your phone to restart
All done, This is just a quick and rough guide how to do it, there's a much better guide on this forum what to do and how
do you kno where the firmware files are exactly? i cant search the forums for the guide.. search function is down.
A quick look and you'll find 'forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596'
For firmwares, a quick Google 'samfirmware' you'll need to sign up to access the files in the firmware section That's if there not in the above link
the first one you must to do is download the firmware file through the internet,
then download the drives and odin and pit512 file,
and then install the drives ,then run the odin, select the re-partition,in pit, select the pit512,in pda, select the firmware which named with pda,in modem and csc is also select the firmware named with modem and csc,
shut down your phone then press vol- ,home ,power at the same time, you will see a android ,
connect your phone with the pc,
when the com is turn green ,press start.and wait..after you flash the firmware, you should format the sdcard and wipe your data..
thanks guys
i think ive sorted it, but still seem rooted somehow
is this the right firmware?
2.1-update1
basedband version I9000XXJM4
Kernel version

If thats all good! then thanks very much guys.. but root still looks iffy to me.
will this stop me from receiving updates from samsung? ie propper froyo when its out.
damn i just read that i think i should have used the 803pit and not the 512. is that right?

if you are trying to flash the leaked BETA froyo from Korea, yes you need the 803 pit

You can get the firmware here http://www.samfirmware.com/home.htm
Depending on what country you are in, there are diferent firmwares.
Download odin from that page aswell.
They also have a how to guide on how to flash with odin.
From my understanding you won't be getting Froyo OTA, you will be getting it via KIES. But with all the modding going on I doubt KIES will let you so you like everyone else here will have to get it installed via ODIN, no big deal at all . Just check back xda when froyo is in news for sgs

Will this also be applicable to me ? I have only rooted my phone. It's unrooted now... And I've not deviated from the stock firmware.
I advice you to check if the 3 Button Combo works on your Phone. If not, apply the 3 Button SBL Fix before messing with ROMs to help recover the device in case of a brick.
Hi,
first of all, I'm sure I've seen this kind of topic before (smuggly thinking, why would you do that? right...) but I can't seem to find it with the search, so apologies if this has already been answered..
I stupidly updated the firmware with OCLF still applied, which I understand is a nono, and now the phone will only boot up to the galaxy logo, then freeze, randomly vibrating now and then. I updated it via Kies to the last firmware (JPO I think). How can I recover the phone?
3 button download mode does work, and I've used Odin before, but only following the very detailed instructions on this site, so not too familiar with it..
Thanks for your help!
should I just manually flash the JPY firmware, following the how to a few posts down? I can't do it now, as it seems like a lengthy procedure, but might try later...
Can you actually get into Download mode? If you can then you should use Odin or Hemidal to flash a new version. I experienced this mistake when I first tried updating my SGS and rectified it by flashing JPK (if I recall correctly). Anyway, I don't think it will matter what version you flash so long as you repartition and the code includes dbdata. You will loose all your downloaded apps and settings but at least your phone will work! Good luck!
Hi,
thanks for the reply.. yes, I can access download mode, which is why I thought I might as well flash the latest firmware (2.2.1) directly with Odin. As far as I can see it does repartition as well, so hopefully that should work!
By the way, the how to in question also flashes voodoo. Do you have to uninstall this when you upgrade like OCLF? It seems more hassle, but I remember reading somewhere that it works better as a lag fix...
Hi people,
I don't know if it's me, or just my lack of knowledge as to topics on this problem..
I have Rooted my Galaxy-s because i didn't want the lot of standard apps, that worked really well..
After this i used KIES to update to Android 2.2.1, works fine!
Now i've been waiting for Gingerbread for so long, and according to Android, i should be able to update Over The Air.. but noooo..
KIES keeps telling me i have the latest Firmware installed.. but it clearly isn't..
My conclusion: i think i can't update because my phone was Rooted? PLEASE correct me if i'm wrong, which i hope to be the case..
I've tried factory reset on my phone but of course it stays Rooted..
Do i need to UNROOT my phone? Can't remember which programme i used to Root it so that doesn's help
Is it me, or am i just unlucky.. or maybe i just don't know enough about Rooting?
So, can anyone tell me how to install Gingerbread on my Rooted Galaxy S ?
Currently its running Android 2.2.1, Smallbandversion (whatever that means) is I9000XXJPY
Build number: FROYO.XWJS5
Sorry if this is the 100th topic on this, but i really digged a lot throuh other topics..
Loads of thanks in advance!
No, nothing to do with being rooted - won't make any difference.
Firstly ota updates not activated for sgs yet (ever?). Official updates are only available via kies dependent on your region and carrier, so you may be running the latest firmware for your combination of phone, region and carrier. gingerbread has only been released for a couple of nordic countries so far. if all goes well the rest of europe are expecting a general release very soon.
For the rest we are dependent on spoofing kies into thinking we are in region NEE (FINLAND) or flashing via odin. So you either spoof kies, flash via odin our sit tight and wait. But ota definitely not

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1037584
As i thought, thanks to both!! I was a bit worried i c*cked up my phone there, but this tells me it's again down to lazyness on Android or Samsung's side..
I've been waiting so long so i got impatient and shovelled trough about all of the topics, but now combining your two replys, i think ill have a go with the NEE version then?
Beeing in Holland we'll just have to make do with a nice Finland version then that will make it interesting since Finnish is THE most weird written language there is, what with all the iiiimouyoniiisuomi and all but i trust it to have an English layout as well?
Ehm, i don't know the meaning of the term "Spoofing", is that a way to crack Kies somehow?
Again, BIG thanks to you! I will try the link and hope for the best, if it won't work i'll just have to be patient (so more).. Good thing beeing in Holland there are means to alter perception of time..
Thank you guys!

The NEE version definitely includes English and I'm fairly sure it includes Nederlandse too. Spoofing is a way to fool Kies into thinking you have a different firware/region, I've tried it and find it a messy way to upgrade. Just search spoofing Kies if you want to learn more about it. Personally I use use Odin 1.3, it's very easy to use, first make sure you can access recovery/download using the 3 button combo, and just to be safe, track down a stock version of the ROM your currently on in case you ever need it. JVH is also out now (a newer version, you'll find the thread here easily). I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work for you, just read through the guide a couple of times until you have it straight in your head, and if you're not sure about anything just ask, lots of good people on here willing to help others.

I've seen a few people post that gave them updates when they were using custom ROMs, but even if I flash a kernel on a stock ROM it tells me this version of the device cannot be updated. Kies is weird.
Kies updates official firmware only and will not update custom or stock roms .
But sometimes it gets in a muddle and does but very very rarely .

Well i thought maybe ill give my provider a call, after that i called Samsung.. anyway it's a maze of menus and of course none of the official people (who should know) don't know jack sh1t.. Seems like only thing they know is how to get the cash out of your pockets..
good thing the people on this forum DO know what they are talking about!
so adding up your replies above, i still wanna go with the Finnish NEE version, so i downloaded it, and installed Odin 3 on my laptop,
drivers for my phone are allready installed so Odin recognised the device if i connect it in download moce, so far so good on that,
now its down to the PIP, and i think the PDA stuff where i need to select the .tar files.. ??
am i right? i watched the Odin tutorial on youtube 4 times now..
and i downloaded the GT_I9000_XXJVK_XXJVK_OXAJVK_Sbl file, which contains these files when extracted:
-CSC_OXAJVK.tar.md5
-PDA_XXJVK_Sbl.tar.md5
-PHONE_XXJVK.tar.md5
i think this is the Finnish NEE version
so, which files am i missing, and which ones should i load in Odin?
i know this must be getting old but i know you guys can help me talking me through
so again, big thanks in advance!

For starters I'd go with JVB or JVH instead of JVK, and as it's your first time flashing I'd use a single .tar version like the one at the top of this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1037584
or one of these
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011901
Both have the bootloaders so it's just handier.
You can also join samfirmware.com if you haven't already, plenty of firmwares there.
Once you have the single .tar on your desktop open Odin 1.3, click on the PDA button navigate to Desktop and select the appropriate file, (see pic attached).
Then put your phone in download mode using the 3 button combo and only then connect it to your PC. Wait for Odin to recognise the phone, when it does, press start and just wait for it to do its job. All going well once it's done it will reboot your phone, wait for the phone to finish rebooting before closing Odin and disconnecting.
If you still want to go ahead with the 3 .tar files you've already downloaded then look at the second link in this message, it has a good description of how to flash using the three files
that IS very helpful indeed!
now i even know in what order to do everything, its nice you explained it step by step so big thanks for that!
So, doing all steps gives my phone Gingerbead?
Im still puzzled as to why are there so many versions like XXJVB, XXJVH and all those? If it's all Gingerbread, does the correct version depend on which country youre in, or is it an updated version, or ar all of there totally different?
I just downloaded the GT_I9000_XWJVB_XXJVK_NEEJV3_Sbl.exe.crdownload
Thats the "NEE", so should work on my device i understand..
so i extracted it in a folder and again there are three .tar files;
CSC_NEE_JV3.tar.md5
PDA_XWJVB_Sbl.tar.md5
PHONE_XXJVK.tar.md5
so im guessing i only have to load the "phone" .tarfile into Odin?
i promise im not a 70 year old man, just a newcomer at flashing

Ok so you're going with the three file flash, that means that in Odin you click on the PDA button and navigate to wherever you stored the PDA_XWJVB_Sbl.tar.md5 file, click the Phone button and find PHONE_XXJVK.tar.md5, then click CSC and find CSC_NEE_JV3.tar.md5.
BUT....
You are coming from 2.2.1 right? I really think you should use one of the single .tar files in the pic attached as you're so new to flashing, they definitely have the GB bootloaders which you need if you're flashing from Froyo. The pic is taken from the second link I posted earlier. I flashed a single .tar and didn't do a wipe or factory reset and didn't have any problems. Just get the JVB or JVH one and use the method I posted earlier.
I'm using JVB with no problems, but others think JVH is better.
DMD9 i thank you again for all info you posted!
I will take your advice to use a single file, since all this still feels like blindfolded surgery to me and i take it when using 3 files theres more to go wrong?
I downloaded the GT_I9000_XWJVH_XXJVO_NEEJV3_Sbl --like you advised
But if i extract theres these three files in it, so i take it i only need to load the PHONE_XXJVK.tar.md5 in the PDA section ?
Which is the JVK.. the one you didn't reccomend
What makes a this file different from another? is it the features, or some country dependant thing? Or can i use this file, what are the drawbacks on this one?
Big thanks again!!

Excellent! You are now ready to flash Gingerbread.
Before you do it just go back and read over all the directions again then flash at your leisure
(The file didn't have to be on your desktop, it just makes it quicker and easier to find when you open Odin)
I'm relatively new to flashing as well (I've flashed about 8 times now, so I'm getting used to it lol) if you aren't sure about the naming of the different versions I.e. XXJVK etc. the best thing to do is join samfirmware.com. they have a page that explains what all those mean and how to understand what the basic firmware contains. It was a massive help for me.

See i have had my galaxy for a few months and thought hey time to play with the pre release of 2.3.3 before it was officially released well now im buggered lol i cant wipe, i cant factory reset i flash another firmware and it all goes fine it reverts back but all my apps and settings and accounts are still there and when i delete my apps and restart there all back again! i install new apps and they delete on restart... frustrating...i cant put any update.zip onto my internal as it deletes it straight away and installing from external SD dosent seem to work, i tried a few posts like this one as suggested by JJEgan else where to no avail either (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818556) id love to be able to use my SGS again as i bought a windows phone 7 as a replacement and i dont like it lol SAVE MY ANDROID AND MY SANITY PLEASE!!!!!
Is it an international I9000? Or the I9000B? It seems to me as though your sdcard might be corrupt... Wipe your Dalvik cache. Did you try flashing a DBDATA containing firmware onto your phone, using ODIN? If not, flash XXJPU (Froyo) and see if that helps...

Look around for a I9000T firmware that contains DBDATA. It should hopefully fix what you're experiencing... Personally, mine's an I9000 so I have no idea about your firmwares... But you can search this forum..

If you have warranty, you should flash the stock firmware for your phone and take it in for repairs... Honestly, can't think of anything else... Unless there's more input from others here on the forum with your model.

yeh looks like its time to return it...maybe i can get a sgsII lol i cant even repartition the damn thing...on a side note all my other flash based things like my camera and usb dongles and sd cards are all doing the same as in restoreing everything on reboot or unplug...wierd
Hi,
i have a sgs from optus australia with the following info:
Baseband: I9000DTJP3
Kernel: 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #36
Build: FROYO.DTJP5
i flashed the speedmod kernel following instructions on the cyanogenmod wiki http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S:_Full_Update_Guide
i wanted to flash cyanogenmod but it had a signature verification fail, which i now know is because of the recovery version. so i've given up on that and i just want to update the phone over kies to the stock gingerbread.
so, i'm pretty sure i can't just connect the phone to kies and try to update it because it has clockwordmod recovery?
so the question is how do i get back to stock kernel? i think I've downloaded the right firmware (from:http://www.multiupload.com/CH3Y5SAHE2), is it a matter of finding the kernel in that folder and just flashing that back on to the phone? is there going to be any issue with this?
thanks everyone
So I just went for it and updated the phone via kies. It worked with no real dramas.
So the next step in getting back to stock is to get rid of superuser, which I can't do now because the update took away root.
Is there a way to temp root the phone to remove superuser then get back to unrooted again?
Why not to flash with odin, with repartition and full wipe?
It will restore it ot factory settings.

Repartition will effectively wipe your entire phone (it repartitions the phone's memory).
Odin is a program used to flash (install) firmwares, both custom and stock ones. Tutorials are everywhere, please search.
Cool thanks for that, I guess the problem I had with understanding is what am I flashing? The stock firmware? Because isn't that what kies just did (albeit without the repartition). Seems like a pain to find the stock firmware since I just got it from Samsung ota

It's either that or you root and then unroot (no idea how to do that one).
http://www.samfirmware.com/ has firmwares. If you flash a Froyo one (repartition checked), you could then update again via Kies. This will give you an absolute stock phone (including the loss of all your information via the repartitioning).
Have you tried going to the market finding the super user app and trying to click uninstall from there. Im guessing you tried the normal way...
