[Q] Nook for my Tab? - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I am new t Android, and got a Tab a few days back. Sold my wifes Nook, which had a few books on it. I saved the ePub files (the books) from the Nook... and copied them to the Tab... However... they won't load. I think it's a DRM issue?
Is there anyway I can load the Nook Books on my Tab? I have paid for them... But they seem locked to my (sold) Nook... There is a Nook for Android app on the web market, but when I go to the Market on my Tab, the app isn't available... I think because Barnes and Noble only sell in the US.
So.. is there maybe a reader that doesn't worry about DRM, or else another plan?

i use 'Aldiko' works with ePub books for me,
also try 'LaPuta' (weird name!) both are on the market, i used both for a while, but deleted 'LaPuta' and only left 'Aldiko'

Thanks.
Tried the 'Aldiko' one, but it asks for a username/password on the DRM file, and I have no idea what u/p that would be. The books were bought from Barnes and Noble, so I tried with my b&n u/p, but no joy - incorrect username/password.

I'd like to try the B&N reader for Android. Problem is, I'm in Australia, and it's blocked from me as it's a US app only. Someone said I can download it somewhere and then 'side load' it? Is this possible? Can it be downloaded somewhere?

Google it, try for exemple "nook apk". Or you can install market enabler and set your phone to access the us android market.

Too much to learn for me!
Located it. Copied the file, using my USB cable, to my 'Downloads' file, and managed to install it (My first install!), and hey presto, my wife is now reading books!
Thanks!
Gonna look at this 'market enabler' thing though! Thanks.

Nice. You don't need to download the file on the pc first, you can download directly on your galaxy tab with the internet browser and install.
I forgot for market enabler you need to be root if I remember correctly.

Thanks again, aibo - I have so much to learn. Coming from an iPhone background... Download and save a file onto my phone?? Crazy!!

Google Books on NC

Anyone able to get google books app running on NC. I have a rooted NC and am able to install app from market but when it runs it opens briefly then closes. Any experience or suggestions?

Make sure you have an SD Card in
The fix for this was bizarre and rather humorous.
I'd been using the SD out of my HTC hero to root my NC because I couldn't locate where I'd stored my older microSDs.
This of course meant I was promptly removing the card from the NC once done and resetting it back to usable fashion for my phone.
Each time I tried to install/run Google Books it would not load just like you.
Ran into another app Zedge that did same thing, and discovered it complaining about needing an sdcard inserted.
Sure enough, I put my SD back in and like a charm, Google Books and Zedge were both able to run.
Later I removed card from the NC and went back into Books. It still loaded, but gave me a popup about where to store files. I was then able to point it to store internal storage and been fine ever since.
Zedge however, WILL NOT work if there is not an external sd card inserted still.

thanks, would not have figured that out for my self.
How to even get the program?
I'm running into a different problem, which is that Google won't even let me *try* to install Google Books for Android. If I search from the marketplace there's no result, if I search from my PC it tells me the nook color isn't compatible, and if I search from the web on the nook the dowload button tells me the requested item could not be found.
(I know this is a gravedig, but the nice video said to post in a similar thread if possible, I hope I'm doing it right).
Edit: CM7 nightly (6/18) is my rooted software.
I have Google Books working just fine on my NC running the latest CM7 nightly.
I have a different question regarding Google Books... does anyone use this app as their primary ebook application? I like the idea of it syncing your last read page in their "cloud," so that I can easily pick up where I left off either on my NC, my Android phone or on their website. I'm not thrilled with either the NOOK app or the Amazon Kindle app and the Aldiko app is okay, just curious if anyone has made Google Books their primary ebook application.
Thanks.
I have no problem running Google Books. I do have a problem with the feature set. You can read books in landscape mode on an iPhone and IPad but not 2.X Android.
I decided to save a few $ since I found a google book $4 cheaper than an Amazon Kindle version. This was a mistake as it was not in epub format but was a scanned book (source 7 x 9 Paperback) in PDF format.
I noticed on the google site they do disclose that it is "Better for larger screens.". As I purchased on a third party site, I did not see that notice. However, I probably would have bought anyway as I would have assumed my nook screen was much larger than an Android phone screen. Without a workable zoom/landscape mode and word wrap, it is not readable on my Nook. I can only read the book on my laptop. I was very disappointed.
Give ezPDF a try.
Rodney
Anybody notice that the Nook is now listed as an incompatible device on https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.apps.books&feature=search_result, and Books no longer shows up in the Market on the Nook.
Is this B&N shaking things up?

Sure, going to have to do that now for Netflix anyways, but the question is WHY is Google+B&N doing this now all of a sudden?
Is this the tip of more stuff getting shut out of NC?

Thought Google Books gives you TWO views for one book, scanned and machine (OCR). Did you check the menu to see if it gives you an alternative view?
Many times, I prefer the scanned view because it maintains the original book art and formatting vs OCR that strips and neuters everything.

i would assume it so they can continue to sell B&N only approved stuff to people not in the know

[REQ] Nook android app

so, my rooted nook reset itself when i opened the shop. After re-rooting, I renamed all the B&N apps so that I can't launch them accidentally.
But I'd still like to be able to shop the Nook store. I thought I could use the nook app in the Market; but it won't launch.
So, my request is for a version of the nook app that will work on the Nook Color.
thanks,
Matt
I don't think anyone's gotten it to launch on their nook. I could be wrong though.
Just tried it. Doesn't launch

I was hoping that someone would fix it or post a different version that works.

The Nook app in the Market does not launch for stock devices. I have read that people using Nookie Froyo have been able to install and use the Nook application from the Market though.
It only allows for book shopping, not magazines. I wish we could figure out a way to get the awesome magazine reader to port...
I hope the magazine reader will work... I actually love that since I move around alot, I can carry my books and magazines with me.
Also backed up to B&N servers. I can't see them going out of business anytime soon.
Now I just need a way to back everything up to my computer, And I'll be set
also its not normal for it to do that... have you tried returning the names to normal, deregistering the device, and reregistering? You can deregister in the settings, and then use nookcolor tools to reregister.
nookcolor tools is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=868366

[Q] How can I buy and sideload an app not compatible with the Xoom?

I am an absolute noob when it comes to more sophisticated techniques of the Android OS. I have encountered more than once now that I want to (buy and) install an application but it is not compatible with my device (i.e. Xoom). Could someone point me to where there's a noob's guide to purchasing and installing apps that are apparently not compatible (who's deciding that anyways?)?
Thanks everyone!
The app developer chooses what devices his app works on. They don't want a Xoom user trying an app that isn't supported. If / when it crashes, the user writes a nasty review.
I got apps to my nook color by using a couple different apps. One was Hocker, I can't remember what the other one. Essentially it was an app that allowed you to backup your apps to folder on the SD card. It made a .apk for the app. Hocker then lets you send the app via WiFi over to the other device (both devices had Hocker running and on the same WiFi network). You could also transfer via dropbox or using a computer to move the .apk over and forgo Hocker.
The other app was a file manager I think, maybe even astro? I'm not sure though, it's been a few months.
This method does require two android devices though. If you don't have another device to initially download the app, then you are going to have to pirate the app and you won't find help from me regarding that.
Thank you sir!
I downloaded MyBackup to my Nook Color and created a .apk file. Then I uploaded it to Dropbox and extracted it to my Xoom. Worked like a charm

NookBooks need WIFI CM7

Hello all,
I've got CM7 running great on my NookColor. Even the Nook App works, and I can redownload all of my books to wherever I want without issue. Bravo!
One slight snag though: the Nook App, for some strange reason, seems to require that the Nook be on Wifi in order for some books to open. This means when I'm at work I can't read some of the books I've paid for through B&N. I tried opening these with another reader (Aldiko), but I got a username/password request to open these books, and my B&N login doesn't work.
Does anyone know a fix for this? Or, is there another app that lets you open .epub files that come from the Nook App?
Much obliged!

I don't think I've ever tried using the Nook App with WiFi off - I'll have to try that after work.
As for Aldiko, I was able to read the B&N DRM protected books by using my B&N username (in my case it was my first and last name, but I'm not sure if that's standard) and my credit card number as the password. I just needed to do this once.
I never thought to use that as my password - I'll give that a shot and post back. Thanks!
After updating to the latest nightly and reinstalling, the Nook App is working just fine.

[Q] books from market, where are they stored?

Ok, this is probably a dumb question and I tried using "search" on the forums, on my device, from my computer and cannot seem to find the book I bought on the google market. I see it when I use Google Books app, but if I open kindle, or Aldiko I don't see the book, and when I use Root explorer I can't find it either. Anyone know where it gets stored?
I do not have google books on my touchpad but I do have the kindle reader. Book files are stored at /sdcard/.palmkindle

They are stored in the cloud. The only thing stored locally is a database file and the covers at /sdcard/android/data/com.google.android.apps.books/files/accounts/[email protected]/volumes. You can test this by putting your device in airplane mode and then try to open a book.
there's an option to store the books for offline use. they end up being stored here:
android/data/com.google.android.apps.books/files/accounts/*your email acct*/volumes/book
the book folders aren't labeled 'the book of basketball' or w/e but you can browse thru the folders. it looks like they are all separated by chapter in the "segments" folder.
converting those files into a sharable file is something that i don't know but i'd imagine someone has done it.
