[Q]Optimus 2X on AT&T UMTS 1900 - LG Optimus 2x

I was wondering if anyone has tried popping in an AT&T SIM in an Optimus 2X to see if UMTS 1900 MHz works. I know it's been done on Anandtech on a P990 model... but it would nice to be sure that Anand and friends didn't get some special LG surprise model.
I'd link you guys to the Anand article but I'm new here and XDA doesn't want me to post any links until 8 posts. =(

It works. I use it on at&t's 3g.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App

I did a research in LG websites,
The only countries that mention that the P990 have the UMTS 1900 band are:
-Poland
-Slovakia
-Spain
-Holland
-Czech Republic
-Belgium
-Australia
-Hong Kong
-Taiwan
Other countries LG websites does not mention the 1900 band, all mention 900/2100. And some like the UK shows the 1700 Band too.
Notice that all sites show the Device as Model: LG P990.
So now the question is does the LG P990 have the UMTS bands 900/1700/1900/2100? since all are the same model number, or is possible that all have different UMTS bands chips?

Agh double post

Got from an eBay seller in Singapore.
The box on the phone states 900/1900/2100 UMTS so i am not sure why some LG local websites only state 900/2100. i am pretty sure they are all the same model.
If you want to the info on the eBay seller, PM me as i don't want people to think i am spamming

When the G2x is a hopeless case for me and retailers for the O2X cannot guarantee UMTS 1900 MHz support, I'll contact you on that seller. Thanks for the offer!

Thanks clubtech for the info. Do you know if AT&T detect it as a smartphone since I am on their $15 media net plan with my current phone?
Can you pm me the seller as well? thx

Is the phone unlocked? If I grab one from TMobile will it work?

It is unlocked. It is not the same as the TMobile G2x (In terms of hardware, the cell modem & GPS are different.)

At&t + T-Mobile Merger Hurts Potential US G2x Buyers

Hi alls, I wish I had better news to bring. The good news is, as expected, the 2X runs stock Froyo.
Now the kicker: as you are all probably aware, At&t has gobbled up T-mobile. This means that when the transition is complete (expected a year to 18 months from now) At&t will drop T-Mobile's 3G bands to EDGE.
It may not affect some owners but for me, I usually keep a device until a big hardware refresh comes about- like a quad-core chip. I'm skipping the 2x for the Galaxy II or the Optimus 3D. I was on the verge of owning this...
Luckily the normal 2X do support UMTS 1900 (one of the 3G bands AT&T use), that's why I am consider buying it off contract from other place and use it on AT&T

Let me understand: do you mean the non-US version of the 2x, the off-contract US retail model, or both? Thanks!
It's been reported that the G2x will support T-Mo *and* AT&T bands:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4231/lg-optimus-2x-coming-to-usa-as-tmobile-g2x-
UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA Support 1700 / 2100 (AWS) / 1900 / 850 MHz
So you can rest assured that T&A-Mobile will support the bands on your phone right through to the bitter end of HSPA over AWS, right?
Ha! I was spying Engaget & Giz all afternoon yesterday & the announcement was made @ Anand...! Thanks for the heads up!
at&t hasn't officially bought T-Mobile yet -_-
An acquisition of this magnitude might not even be legal, it has to be approved by the FCC and the DOJ
Just checked the specs on this new phone on the T-Mobile spec sheet that was posted on T-MO News ad and that device supports both T-Mobile and AT&T's 3G Networks. I had to recheck it over 10 times during the day in case it was a miss print and they are still posted.
Has anyone else found any news that is different???

Yes, this says different. (Dang it, I can't post links. Search on Engadget.com for "T-Mobile G2x lacks quadband HSPA+, shatters dreams")
That said, I'm still curious to find out if anybody else has tried the the 2X or the G2x on AT&T yet. I'm not smart enough to understand what the lack of 850 3G means. Is that an upload speed? So would I be able to download zippily on the 2100 Mhz band but my upload would take forever?
Seeking original poster or the multitudes smarter than me for answer.

Further adding:
I'm interested in potentially buying the Optimus 2X (900/1900/2100 UMTS) not the G2x (1700/2100 UMTS). Anybody able to explain why the 2X may not work with AT&T, or share experience with it working?
The 2x will give you 3G on only the 1900 band with At&t, and not on the 850 band. So your 3G coverage will be worse than phones designed for the carrier. It will not get 3G on T-mobile.
You may as well just wait for the "Thrill 4G".

what are the speed test for this phone on tmobile?
and so if it dosent get 3g will it be getting edge?
Just in case someone finds this thread again, the G2X DOES NOT support *any* AT&T 3G frequencies:
http://www.phonedog.com/2011/04/27/...-quad-band-hspa-plus-won-t-work-with-at-t-3g/
It was a screw-up by T-Mobile to say it did.

Lg 2x on t-zones/web2go

Hi, I know that the g2x is blocked by tmobile from using tzones or web2go. But does anyone know if the unlocked optimus 2x works with those cheaper data plans? And also, the optimus 2x works on tmobiles 3G band right? Thanks to anyone who helps
So I guess no one knows

If you mean the US Tmobile, the optimus 2x only gets edge (no AWS 1700 band).
If you mean European Tmobile, check the bands, since the optimus 2x has 900/1900/2100 and would likely be covered for 3g.

[Q] Does my P970 have the 1700 Mhz band? Will it work on the 3G T-mobile network?

Hi all,
I've spent the last few hours searching google and this forum, but to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.
I have a LG Optimus Black but don't have the box to know the specifications. I want to buy a T-mobile sim card for my phone, but can't figure out if it will support T-mobile's 1700/2100 3G network. According to GsmArena (and other sites) there is 2 versions of the P970 one with the 1900 Mhz band and one with the 1700 band, I don't know which one my phone is.
How can I know which band my phone supports? I have a model number, IMEI, and S/N. Is there any app or program that would be able to tell me what band my phone supports?
Thanks in advance.

I just called LG in the UK they also claim they don't know. This is getting kind of annoying. I want to know if I can buy a T-mobile sim card.
I have the LG P970 and with my t-mobile USA Sim, 3G does not work. It only uses the GSM Edge signal. It works fine with AT&T 3G.

So you have the 1900 Mhz version of the P970, since At&t's UMTS network uses 850/1900.
Humm just bring your phone to T-mobile booth or branch and test it

T-Mobile USA's 3G/4G(UMTS/HSPA+) AWS REQUIRES 1700mhz + 2100mhz combined. If your phone has only 1700mhz, it won't work (and no, it won't work "1/2"). You'll just get defaulted to EDGE speeds (which practically all GSM phones support)
the
P970 has HSDPA 900 / 1700 / 2100
and the P970H has HSDPA 900 / 1900 / 2100
so i think the original version would work...
Came back from the U.S and AT&T 3G works fine.

My phone is LG-P990hN but it says tmobile.

My phone is LG-P990hN but it says tmobile on the front. after factory reset it shows fido background and it has fido animations..
Is this optimus2x
im in canada but i dont know if its canadian version of phone because it fully says tmobile on the phone.
Which phone do I have?

Where does it say this? If this is taken from the Settings -> About Phone, it only reflects the ROM currently on the device. My phone is the actual P990hN from Fido, and was originally listed as LG-P990hN; however, with the current ROM, the model is listed as just LG-P990. What do you see on the label under the battery? It will tell you the actual model of the device.
It probably had the digitizer replaced with a T-Mobile one. Where did you purchase the phone?
I traded somebody for the phone here in Canada.
It does say p990HN under the battery

I believe P990HN is the Canadian version of P990. Did a little search for you, and it seems that the major difference is its inclusion of the 850 Mhz band, which the European P990 lacks.

As far as I am aware, only G2x are TM-branded. So, in your case, I can see two possibilities: replaced glass (wrong carrier logo), or replaced casing (wrong label). Does the IMEI on the label match the actual IMEI of your phone? If yes, I'd say the model on the label (P990hN) is your answer...

If it doesn't say P999, it's not a g2x. Someone probably just swapped digitizers.
Just do a IMEI reverse check.
Use this link but replace the IMEI part with your actual IMEI. (dial *#06# in dialer to display it).

is possible flash P990 firmware to P990hN phone?
thanks!
Easiest way: Put in a Rogers, Bell, or Telus SIM (or their low-cost subsidiaries like Fido, Virgin, and Koodo) and if it gets 3G signal, it's a P990.
If it's a P999, it will be locked into 2G only on Rogers/Fido, while the other carriers will not have any signal period.
If you try a Wind/Mobilicity/Videotron SIM, a P990 will refuse to have signal, while a P999 will have 3G signal.
This is because the P990 supports 850/1900/2100 frequencies, while the P999 only has 1700/2100. 2100 is not used in North America. 1700 is exclusive to T-Mobile USA and Wind/Mobilicity/Videotron.
edit: didn't realize this was old LOL.

Who is your carrier?
I havent seen an official specs sheet specifying the bands that the X operates on but its safe to assume that you would need a T-Mobile variant of the phone as it will support the 2100 band that carriers use for 3g in Europe. An AT&T version should work, but 3g is no guarantee since AT&T doesnt operate on the 2100 band. Any GSM version sold stateside would pick up EDGE regardless.
The Moto X will work in Europe up to HSPA+ speeds since the device supports 2100mhz.
http://www.phonearena.com/phones/Motorola-Moto-X_id7885
I have imported AT&T and Verizon devices to the UK before (the LG Optimus G Pro and the Droid DNA) and both phones connected to HSPA+ on EE. The only thing that wont work is LTE since the bands are incompatible. I will be importing an AT&T customised Moto X to the UK soon hopefully.
Perhaps try the international one (such as the model here in Canada), being international maybe it would have more bands accessible to it.
