[Q] My First Android Phone - Please Help - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have an Alltel HTC Hero and really want to do the whole rooting, custom roms, and all that good stuff, but I have no clue where to begin. I didn't even know such a thing was possible until the other day. CNet said something about Unrevoked, but that is so confusing and conplcated, but I have no clue what I'm doing. Can someone please give me simple and easy directions for where I need to start and how to get things done right?
Phone Info:
Firmware Version: 2.1-update 1
Build Number: 2.33.556.1 CL180108 release-keys
Software Number: 2.33.556.1
Baseband Version: 2.42.01.04.23

Read. Open every thread and read it. Learn what to do and what to expect before you start anything or you'll end up with a Hero shaped paperweight, and we get someone else on here wailing about how they didn't know what they were doing and bricked their phone.
-----
Sent from my CDMA Hero. I got some hot Ginger-on-Hero action here!

When I first rooted my Hero, I used unrevoked.com. Just go to the site, click on the pic of the Heroc, and install the .apk (ensure that non-market app install is checked under Settings). It should root and flash amonra recovery. But remember, read and reread before you do anything with your phone if you don't want to end up an overtly expensive 6oz paperweight

In the android development section, there should be a thread on rooting for non-sprint cdma heros. I recently tested it on another friend's hero (we both have cellular south), and it worked great.
After you reboot the phone, you can download Rom Manager from the market and that should get you a good start. **Protip** always backup before you flash something you aren't familiar with.

Help The Noobs

Will someone be kind enough for all the noobs out there and post a complete video of how to get from a completely stock firmware to (well in this case) this hero build, or the newest, latest, or best working hero build. While showing the order to flash radios, spls, and such using the ADB. It will help out a lot of people trust me. And from the looks of all the noobs right now youll have so many views, subscribers, followers or whatever your motive is. Please help noobs out.
If you need it you can find some free desktop recorders to enhance your video here: http://download.cnet.com/windows/vid...ftware/?tag=bc
Completey safe downloads from cnet.
Remember stock to hero!
I would do this myself but i myself do not know how and am on my second g1.
Thank you!
i will have a go at making that over the weekend.

Since this thread is for the "noobs", I have a couple of questions to ask.
Excuse my not using the search fully. There are just so many threads and so many responses and none of them are completely clear.
If I were to root my phone with the latest Hero ROM that has flash playet 10, will I still need to upgrade the firmware to 1.5 or is this particular ROM built on 1.5 or what??
Also, does this latest Hero ROM have the famed HTC virtual keyboard or no??

Honestly idk but maybe someone will see this thread and answer that for you or you can start a new thread
There are quite a few videos out there already that show you how its done. Maybe not directly toHero but the whole process is the same - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDPFhJ9noLA
So instead of using JF 1.31, simply use the Hero ROM of your choice, rename it as "update.zip" and put it on the root of your SD card. Turn off your G1, hold the HOME button and press POWER to get into the Recovery image. Press ALT+W (to wipe) then ALT+S (to flash the ROM).
EDIT: I forgot some very crucial information >_< IF you are going to Hero from Stock you do require a few other things. Namely the new Radio and the new SPL (depending on which Hero ROM you pick). Make sure though that whatever you do, you upgrade the radio first to avoid bricking your G1. Look at my signature for links to what you need, like the Radio, SPL etc.
Wait patiently and all should be well...
@OutstandingO
Hero is basically Cupcake (1.5) but with a different interface created by HTC using custom code. So you just flash the Hero ROM of choice and that's it.

YouTube has plenty of view on rooting that's where I learned how to do it, they also have the files u need to root it right there for u to download. Just search it and u will find it. The guy who's vid I followed is tony moreno look for his bids. I don't recommend jumping from 1.1 to hero. Go from 1.0 to 1.1 then jump to 1.5. Also hero is built from 1.5. I myself have tried it but even with all the optimizing its not fast enough for me. It also has the famed HTC IME keyboard. I myself use JF 1.5 APD. With the Hero theme in the themes section with the HTC keyboard. Flash would be nice but it still has issues with speed and force closings. Like I said YouTube the rooting process and search around the thread for other stuff like and and how to use fastboot.
I forgot some crucial information, namely to upgrade the Radio first and that you might need to upgrade the SPL. Have edited my post.
That is in part something that threw me for a loop.
I've seen multiple vids for rooting but none of them seem to address this whole "Radio" issue that you brought up and the steps surrounding that. From what I have been reading this is the most important part.
I love this site but the type of people that post here are guys that already know what their doing in most cases and they speak and post as such.
So have I ever developed an app for the G1, no, but I'm not Danny Dunderhead either. I can read a set of instructions if laid out for me.
So I ask you more experienced gentlemen, can someone either post a link or give me step by step help in checking my "radio", upgrading my "radio" and then installing the ROM??
I would greatly appreciate it.
I did it! I bricked my G1!
Yeah, well...what can you do. I read over the posts here, watched youtube videos, and searched the web as well. Read and viewed everything I could until I couldn't take it anymore. Then...I tried. Tried and failed? No, tried and died.
MAN, I WANT HERO! I am more jealous with every video I see. I don't care if it's a little slow. It is pure Android beauty. But...
There is so much information out there, not just at this forum, but all over the net. And although there are many similarities between the instructions (I use that term loosely for some), many have different steps so it's hard to tell which to follow. Apparently taking what you feel are the best from each is not the way to go. Really, I'm not stupid about these things...well...
So, here is where I started; a T-Mobile G1 running the latest OTA 1.5 update and the 2.22.19.26I radio software. Used Parted Magic to create a 5GB FAT32 and a 1GB EXT2 partition on the SD card. I downloaded everything I though I would need or could find. The original boot and recovery img's along with RC29, RC30, and Cupcake zips. Then I got HardSPL and a bunch of files from Hayruko. I got JeseusFreke, CyanogenMod, and JACHero stuff. Hell, someone said to download the Telnet.apk and put it on the SD card as well. Did that. I found a great thread for installing the JACHero, but it did not go into rooting your phone first. Did that need to be done? I guessed it did. So I started there. Downgraded nicely to RC29. That was easy. Then even went through the telnet and terminal emulator steps. Then trouble. Which recovery.img to use? Some instructions reference the testkeys and some don't when rooting. Figured I would do it that way. So I went through those steps. Loaded CyanogenMods 1.3.1 and 1.33.2005 SPL on the SD card. Flashed (I thought) the recovery.img. Rebooted to get ready to install the SPL. Stuck at t-Mobile G1 now! They really do call it a brick for a reason.
So now that I got that off my chest, a few questions. First, I want to run HERO. I want it! However, I would like to make a request this time. Could someone please post step by step instructions for taking a stock G1 to the JACHero 2.3.4 release. Not just "flash the recovery and SPL" files. I would like more detailed directions. If you know of a good link to send me, please tell me. I thank you in advance for your time. I know it's a real pain in the ---, but I promise I will pass your knowledge along to another such as I!
A few questions first. I believe the steps are something like this:
1. Downgrade to RC29.
2. Copy recovery_teskeys.img and some recovery.img along with some SPL update.zip file to the SD card and "load" them properly. Which files should you use (does it matter), which order should you do it and how?
3. How do I do a Nandroid backup at this point? Do I need/want to?
4. Do I wipe now? Need to ever? Doesn't the image overwrite everything anyway?
4. Copy update.zip (the renamed JACHero 2.3.4 zip file) to the SD card and load it. Do you need to load any other image first other than JACHero 2.3.4.?
5. Enjoy HTC Hero goodness!
I know I am asking a lot, but I need the steps so I can replicate this easily. I am going to want to do this a lot based on what I see out there. Always something new to try and a lot of great developers out there. Thank you in advance for all of your time and effort. I promise to pass it along.

Problems rooting

Sorry another noob just joined the forum.
I have been researching periodically for about a month now and jumped in last week and attempted to root my phone. I believe that I rooted it after upgrading to 2.27.651.5. I could not successfully flash the recovery.img.
The program that pops up on the phone gave me an error message. Should I root the phone again from the beginning?
After this is successful all I have to do is load a ROM onto the phone and I will be set am I right? As of right now my rooted? phone is having problems connecting to the mobile network and I can only connect to the WiFi networks to get internet.
Sorry for being such a noob. I have tried searching and researching but the terms used are unintentionally geared towards people who know about this stuff unlike me.
Thanks for any help.
Just want to say you have an awesome username lol. Hopefully someone can help you out
If your phone was successfully rooted then yes all you would have to do is load a ROM and you'd be all set but it seems like your phone didn't get rooted. When you root a phone correctly it won't interfere with anything already on the phone, it will just add functionality. When I rooted my hero I had to drop from the .6 build to the .5 and after I rooted it my gps and such didn't work so it might have been the build I downloaded onto the phone or the rooting process I used was wrong. I would try to wait until a dev puts together a guide on how to root the .6 build(the latest Android 2.1 build) and then root it. I have some experience with rooting so ill keep looking for a .5 build that works properly after being rooted and if I find one ill let you know what to do and all that fun stuff. And you do have a pretty awesome user name if you have any other questions email me at [email protected]

[Q] what to do next?

i have a rooted htc hero cdma sprint phone.
firmware 1.5
build # 1.56.651.2 cl85027 release keys
software version 1.56.651.2
i rooted this by using this
what i want to do is go to 2.? software without losing root access.
i did not go to step 3 on that page, because all i wanted was to use the tether program.
what is a rom i should use,and how to use it, to still have root access and be able to go to the 2.? software?
thanks to anyone who responds
flash the .5 version of the rom(RUU) and then root again.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
thats how i did it with the newest update. after that you can flash nfinites .6 sw version to have the latest stock sw while retaining root.
i hope that that is clear...if you follows the guides on here, everything will go very smoothly
ok
im lookinking for the .5 version of the rom,but i dont know what that is. i did go to the page and can follow the directions when i understand what that is
Now that you're rooted, all you have to do is flash nfinitefx45's Stock de-odexed ROM -- it is the latest official 2.1 release from Sprint, with root access (super-user permissions), wifi tether, and Apps2SD support added. Here is the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=703267 Follow all the directions there.
You can ignore the post above -- you don't have to run the 2.1 RUU in order to run a 2.1 ROM. I am running the ROM I listed and I'm still on the 1.5 root.
thanks
thank you i will try that now.
just a what if ?
what if i update to stock 2.1 with no update and then root from there? will that work? or will i be "barred" from doing that by some thing?i was just asking because reading about the rom you showed me there were some things that do not "work" correctly or just didnt work at all.i know that by reading all the coments.
just a what if
thanks
Yes, you can upgrade to the official 2.1 RUU using HTC Sync if you want. There is a way to root that version too but it's located in a different post in the Development forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
thanks again
thanks again leaf
all i want is to have the most up to date or most powerful device i can have still with the root access, not to much to ask for seeing how i pay my bill every month.
Hey check it out I'm running 2.1,thanks again.

HTC restart problems
Hi to all,
I bought a new HTC model A6288 G3 + Hero and I pressed the button "Return to factory settings" with both SIM and microSD removed. Window opens to restart Windows, then the indication is "Tap the screen to set up your Windows Phone." I clicked and pops with "align screen" after I used the stylus to align. Hence no longer happen. I can go one way or window. To turn off your Pocket PC must remove the battery.
In the Add / Remove Programs I have left only three programs, but to Explore My Windows Mobile-Based Device Windows folder there(with activesync help).
How can I solve this problem, if anybody knows? Thanks very much.
@dankdank11 -- Glad you got everything figured out!
@cj15pas -- I think you have posted in the wrong forum. This one here is for the Sprint-based Hero that is running Android, not Windows. You should go post your question in the Q&A of the other HTC Hero: G2 Touch forum here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=508

[Q] [N00B] Figuring out which mods my G1 has?

Greetings, all. I'm just moving into the Android scene from some dark and lonely years using WinMo/iOS. Since I'm cheap, I bought a used G1 that was already rooted, figuring I could figure it out (did my time jailbreaking iOS and modding WinMo). Well, apparently I'm a worse noob than I'd thought....
Here's what I'm finding:
Firmware Version: 2.1-update 1
Baseband Version: 62.505.20.17U_2.22.19.261
Kernel Version: 2.6.29.6-wg ctso#h0meb0x #2
Mod Version: OpenEclair-v1.2.1 BACONWEAVE
Build number: openeclair_dream_sapphire_us-eng 2.1-update1 ERE27 eng
From the Recovery Mode: CyanogenMod v1.4 + JF
I've tried searching XDA, but honestly, it confused me even more. From what I've found, I should be on at least CyanogenMod v4 to be running Eclair (2.1)? And the guy I bought it from must have been running an older ROM, as WiFi doesn't work and Android Marketplace don't show up.
If anyone could give me a few pointers on where to start, I'd greatly appreciate it. I feel pretty confident that I'll pick up Android pretty quick, just a big change from iOS/WinMo. Again, sorry for this probably being a repeat article, but the search tool has been more confusing that helpful to me here (unlike most forums).
The easiest thing for you to do is to flash a new rom onto you phone I'm using the new super e rom and have had no problem with it, you will have to do a seperate zip download for the marketplace with this rom, which is found on page 86 of this roms post, if your wanting to wifi the apk can be found in the rom bible in the development section as well, power on your g1 holding the power and home button go to the home section and WIPE EVERYTHING not doing so will cause problems, then install the rom reboot then power off and back into the same mode, and flash the gapps zip this will get you up to date
Sent from my HTC Dream using XDA App
So just to make sure I completely understand, I'm not going to need to touch the SPL or Radio or anything like that, right? Just wipe, then run the ROM for the saved .zip file?
Thanks for the quick response!
If ur not sure what spl or radio u have its best to get the most up to date ones, theunlockr.com has the easiest way to get the most up to date and walks you through step by step just click the how to tab, but when it comes to roms this site is by far the best
Sent from my HTC Dream using XDA App
If your going to replace everything then partition the sdard ext upgrade the exts install in order with reboots between, radio, spl, then rom, (if you beed more detail just ask I'm not sure how new you are to this) then once u install the gapps u will be asked to sign into google, if you haven't done this before then you will not have your contacts so be sure to write them down or something before wiping (sorry forgot about this earlier
Sent from my HTC Dream using XDA App
Haha, I was just watching their videos. Thanks for the help, I think my plan will be to wipe my phone then go their route. Does super E work with their system, by the way? I'm still trying to figure out the difference between "Danger SPL" (required for super e) and their method...
Also, since I can already get to root, can I just save a .zip'd ROM to my SD card, wipe the phone, and then install it? Or if I need to go through their steps, do I need to un-root my phone, and then do their "One-Click Root" method?
Thanks again, you're the best!
I would not recommend danger spl due to the risk of bricking your device just stick with the hard spl they provide it runs just fine on the super e
Sent from my HTC Dream using XDA App
You don't need the whole root method just use they're how to load a custom rom it gives you the latest spl and radio but yes save all three straight onto the sdcard after partitioning it
Sent from my HTC Dream using XDA App
In the future yes you can just wipe and flash but this ensures ur up to date with everything else, I'm calling it a night, post a update so we can see how it worked for you

[Q] Updated cdma hero rooting help?

I'm pretty new to this stuff so i went for the easiest and fastest way to root, the universal android root.
I tried it and it wont root it. Ive been reading and im guessing its because my hero is at the newest update.
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Software number: 2.32.651.2
any solutions? or other legit methods?
pm me or post
anything helps
thanks
That version has been rootable for a long time. There is a method here. Can't link since I'm mobile, but the intro threads should have directions in them; or the Wiki for that matter.
Check them out! They're full of good info.
This solution is reported to work for 2.32.651.2:
One click Root APK for CDMA Hero
Search for super one click. I use it on mine when I want to start fresh. It works on the newest update. But you do need windows sdk installed.
HELP! Im confused..Sprint Hero 2.1update
Ive been looking through these threads for a couple hours now and I cannot seem to find any of them that apply to my phone. I have a different build number and all of that. My phone is running super slow and about to bounce off a wall. I am looking to root but I have no clue what all I need to do with the different ROMS and everything to speed it up. Any ideas everyone?
Sprint Hero
baseband version 2.42.02.10.29
Build number 2.32.651.2 CL282911 release-keys
Software Number 2.32.651.2
Any Ideas would be GREAT!!! Thanks
I am having the same issue. I did get it rooted with SuperOneClickv1.7-shortfuse.zip file. However, I'm not sure where to go from here. This is a lot more complicated than it was to root and upgrade my Moment to Froyo. I'm now working on my husband's HTC Hero CDMA build number is 2.32.651.2, Sprint release Android 2.1-1 update. I want to do a nandroid backup from what I understand (no clue how to do this!) and then flash a 2.2 or even 2.3 custom ROM to the phone after wiping some files? I have this process down on the Moment, but the Hero is completely different and I'm lost.
I have ASTRO file manager installed and under apps after using the SuperOneClick, I do see SuperUser. I was thinking I wanted to update to the CM 6.1 ROM for now, until the newer systems are completely stable and up-to-date... but I have no clue where to go from here as most directions I've found don't apply to this build. Since I'm 6 months pregnant and off of work until after baby gets here, I have most of the day to tinker with it, when not chasing a rowdy 3.5 year old around the house. Just need some guidance.

You need a custom recovery installed to nand and flash. Rom manager is the easiest way to install recovery. Once you have that, backup, wipe data, cache, and dalvik, install rom zip just like on the moment. Also to get to recovery, hold down home then power.

I'll try that this evening when my husband comes home with his cell. I have a recovery file on the SD that I put there via Windows (recovery-RA-heroc-v1.2.3). Is this a good one to use? I'll download ROM manager onto the phone this evening and go from there. Or, if updating to CM 6.1 should I just flash that with the ROM manager?

That's an older version. You can flash that way. I prefer to go into recovery to flash. Better luck that way for me. At least you don't have to run the updater to have factory to flash like the moment. You do need to nand restore to a sense rom to update profile and PRL though, and then nand back to CM.
CM has a great guide on their wiki... http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Desire_(CDMA):_Full_Update_Guide
