Working root for new SBFs using GingerBreak, reported working on other SKU sbfs
This is good news as it could possibly mean that we can use this method to root regardless of OTA updates as it would most probably take beyond 2.3+ to fix this exploit.
If anyone is down to test rooting method as per my guide or simply 1.1 Apk for other SKUs please let me know and we'll update the post to note that this can work

See thread with title "Hmmmmm".
It worked for me. Maybe that thread needs to be renamed.
Working on trying it on 1.57 that was previously rooted on 1.26 and lost root on the update. Dang gingerbreak is slow though.
I know if people could not get sideloading working in the first place,
GB 1.0, as in just the exploit script works perfectly fine to allow you to enable that.
Not sure everyone knows how should they need it.
whats the point in all this? will we be able to get real roms and kernals now???

No.
This is a root exploit. With the patch that came out for our device that got rid of root we now have a new exploit of acquiring root.
The method currently works for 2.3 and below (not sure how low? I'm guessing all android versions..)

FYI most discussion is going on here about this new exploit.

Works on the new Telstra / Bell SBF u4.1.42
Only issue I found is that after root, you need to download superuser, and after superuser is installed, need to reboot again
After that, all good!

This is most definately not the case.
Using the APK v1.1 SU app is installed and reboot is done automatically..
The APK is the exact same thing as my script/guide.

Hi, after test for some times, i made the flashable root package for 2.3.4 (That the device has flash the leaked HKTW 2.3.4 and unlocked the device)
NOTE:
Unlocked Atrix 4G with HKTW 2.3.4
Please flash the CWM recovery first: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138541
You should have a external sd card in your device, because the recovery cann't recognize the internal card

PLEASE download from the attachment, I'm really sorry that my site was down.
I think all of you know how to flash zip from recovery, so I'll not give hint about this, LOL

I then decided to try and restore my apps via TB, and it doesnt let me batch anything, see anything, etc. It's like I don't have root. Then I tried getting root explorer and it FC's on opening the app. WTF?

This is because you didn't read my post carefully. You should have a EXTERNAL SDCARD in your device first! Because the recovery cann't mount the internal sdcard.

There is another way to check whether the root of your device work or not.
Run cmd in Windows or terminal in Linux.
execute the following cmd:
Code:
adb shell
su -
After you input the "su -" cmd, you should have a dialog to allow root access in your device. I.e, the root works. Otherwise, it doesn't work.
BTW, does your device unlocked and flash the HKTW android 2.3.4 rom?

TOO bad, the zip file should be flashed as the normal way to flash rom.
GOTO recovery then choose this zip file to flash.
BTW, you should copy the zip file to the external sdcard first!

I have a theory about the bootloader, please feel free anyone to shoot it down or help see if it will work.
TBH released patches for bootloader, kernel, and baseband. here
So my theory is that the bootloader patch they released was 30.04, if we get root on .621 and can get into Clockwork recovery, could we install this bootloader patch which is still 30.04, and then be able to SBF back to .602?
What do you guys think?

I was running stock .605 with root via the DROID 3 easy root script v7 and then did the the OTA update to .621 and after it was done and rebooted I still had root. If you're on stock .605 I would strongly recommend you root it via the DROID 3 easy root script v7 script (Google it) to root it and then take the OTA .621 update to keep root.
Update: After reading a response below to this post I decided to try and see if I could get root access with any new apps that were not installed prior to the .621 update and I have discovered that I cannot. So user trebuchet76 had the right suspicion that I didn't really have root anymore but rather the apps I had installed prior to the .621 update that had root kept it after the update but new apps will not get root access.
Hmmmm, that's odd....still wanting someone to confirm this was not an isolated incident.....

This sounds like bad info written all over it. The only sure fire way that I know of to keep root after OTA is Voodoo rootkeeper. Why risk it when there is no known root method for. 621 and no way to revert?

I saw on p3droid's twitter a few days ago that he was aware of the SBFing problem. I'm not sure if he's working on anything though. In his tweet he said that even though the bootloader was not updated, something in the cdt.bin had changed which blocks us from SBFing to an earlier build.

That makes me wonder at whether or not we could remove the file that causes SBFing to break (which is cdt.bin according to p3droid, I believe), package the update for CWM, and make it flashable that way.

Possible solution to root
I have a crazy idea about rooting this new 290 firmware.
And please guys, correct me if it's a known fact that this is wrong.
1.- Don't unlock bootloader.
2.- Flash ONLY baseband and kernel for 534.
3.- root with kingo or whatever worked for us back then.
4.- reflash 290 baseband and kernel.
We used to do something like this when the HTC One X had problems to root new firmwares, and it worked.
Think this might be an option?
I can try it, but only after next Monday. See, I'm traveling out of the country tomorrow, and wouldn't want to be left without my Z1 for the trip.
Any tips?

Could work (no need to flash baseband though, as it's only temporary). But we're back to the problem with remounting / etc, this is due to the new SELinux policies introduced in 4.3.
Think its the first time since X10 that i really missed root from a major update
Damn i cant wait... been trying alot of stuff with no success.. Cant even reroll to .518 - root then CWM and OTA to .257... So im stuck with the latest version with no root

I thought Android was supposed to be easy to root. Sony are really playing hardball with this, we shouldn't have to find bugs and loopholes to Root our devices anymore, else this is no better than Apple or Windows Phones :/
I randomly noticed today that there is a firmware update available for this tab via Kies-- not sure yet what the changes are yet but the upgrade seemed to go smoothly.
I saved the image, extracted the recovery.img and root.img, and posted for Chainfire here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57390437&postcount=690
I'm crossing my fingers hoping he will able able to provide support for this tablet! Being able to get past the kitkat SD card restrictions would be great.

You have to extract them from a firmware image. Since they're not yet available for download from sammobile.com, you have to wait for a firmware update via Kies. After you follow the prompts to update, follow these instructions to save the firmware: http://androidforums.com/threads/how-to-backup-firmware-from-kies-upgrade-process.458795/
Once you've save the firmware image you can easily extract the files he needs.

Not sure. I went to the link and downloaded srsroot(you have to like or share through one of several social means in order to download it)
It's an .exe program that you have to run from a pc. I don't have my pc up at the moment but I may try it at a later time.
One thing that does strike me as odd is that srs root says on twitter that root was obtained for the xt1609 in December of 2016. It's hard for me to believe that if root was achieved , no one has posted on xda anything about it. I would think someone would have done so by now if that was the case.
