New kernal and bootloaders - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So will bootloader flashing be the norm with GB from now on out or just something because it's new and there will be a work around later. The only reason I ask is because I'm scared about an odin flashing right now due to the fact that my phone usb is acting weird because I have to wiggle my cable the right way to charge.

well you only have to flash the bootloaders once. but i see your fears if the cable is funky. good news is that it only takes about 1 second for that part of the flash, so if it happens to crash at that exact time you are very unlucky.
it may be possible to create a new kernel that works on the old bootloaders but dont expect it to come along any time soon. but if it does consider your self fortunate because it really runs good. come to think of it cm7 works on the old bootloaders so depending on what samsung did there is no logical reason a kernel cant be built with this in mind.
is it the stock samsung cable??

Yea. It's the stock cable, but my baby daughter sucked on it and I think partially corroded the terminals. I didn't know when it happened so I'm not sure if my phone terminals also got wet, so I'm worried about that too

terminals are copper
copper dont corrode with spit.
chewing wouldnt help though.

Its not that bad a process. just watch videos and follow instal instructions a listed. The new boot loaders work with all roms

I'm pretty sure it has some corrision because after it was harder to get a connection. And if it is anything like xbox, I know that got correded by my older son some years ago.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

it may have spit residue on it making bad connection but trust me, those terminals wont corrode with spit. I know my metals, if anything get some 70% or better rubbing alcohol and clean the terminals with a folded paper towel

[Q] Who has two thumbs and hard bricked his cappy? This guy.

Hey guys. I've had my cappy since last august (one year, obviously) and today an act of god happened while I was trying to flash my phone to serendipity 6.4 - lightning struck my dorm building (poor college student), and the power went out.
anywho, as you know the warranty period is one year (stupid if you're locked in for 2 years, imho) and guess what? my warranty expired YESTERDAY. FML. called AT&T and they won't let me get a new one now, and I'm not eligible for an upgrade. so... i have two options - shell out a lot of cash that I don't have for an insurance replacement or new phone, or fix my phone. I've tried making a jig, and it didn't work. None of the key combos work. It always goes to the phone-warning-computer screen. I searched and searched for a miracle solution but found nothing. Does anyone have anything I can try?
If not... is there anyone out there with an HTC inspire or captivate they'd be willing to sell me? This is the only phone I have, I don't have a backup, nor a home phone line.
With the pc screen you can't hold down the volume buttons and plug in usb with Odin running? If you're on gb kf1 bootloaders I remember seeing somewhere that screen is download mode. Worth a try.
That's one of my biggest fears. Precisely why I started using my laptop for flashes.
Sent from my i897 running MIUI 1.8.12 with TalonMTD kernel.
If ur seeing signs of some kind of life, then ur not hard bricked.
Edit: This may get u into download mode... Pull battery, insert usb into computer (with Odin already open), insert micro usb into ur phone, replace battery. If u get into download mode, put the battery cover on then proceed.

well, it gives me the phone-!-computer screen but nothing else. Jig failed, odin fails, nothing will put it in download.
Edit: for the record, I was using Serendipity 7 before, and had that horrid battery drain problem, so I was trying to flash back to 6.4... if it matters.
^ If u can't get into Recovery, I edited my post above to maybe help with download mode.

You said JIG failed i really doubt that it will fail try with another JIG.
What bootloaders you are on ?
You try only holding volume down or only holding volume up while plugging into pc from phone off state. ( best way to make sure is pull battery and replace without pushing any buttons. )??

This is precisely the reason why I do all my flashing from my laptop and I have a jig (or two) around me...and an entire pack of resistors on my desk somewhere. I went to the shack the other day and bought the 10 dollar super pack of resistors, and as a Computer Engineering major, I should never have to buy resistors ever again...I gives you somewhere around 500 resistors of differing resistance.
worked with another jig (a better made one)? Gratz!!

N1 + foam party = fail to boot

Hi, last week I was in a foam party... with my nexus one in the back pocket..
It was almost completely wet, I wait different hours and then I try to start it but it stuck at the boot ("X" symbol). Yesterday I came back at home, I change the battery, clean the phone with alcohol and put it in the rice for almost a day. I can enter into the bootloader (blackrose), I can use fastboot but the recovery (amonRa) and my rom do no boot. I flashed the radio and the recovery several times. It always bootloop when I start the recovery. With blackrose I check the internal memory, there are 2 bad blocks... not too much. The screen, all the buttons and the battery seems to work correctly but the led does not light up when I charge the N1 (but it charge the battery and without the battery but plugged in, if I try to power on the smartphone, the led blinks).
Do you have some suggestions?

I mean, i guess this might not work since your N1 is now Liquid Damaged but try this:
Fastboot erase system
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase userdata
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase recovery
Note: you will need a recovery image and a rom zip so that you can test out if your N1 boots into recovery or not, if it does proceed to flashing the rom then reboot, and still Your phone has acquired Liquid Damage, nothing i have told you might work, it might not even get recognised by the Computer that is being used for the current operation, your phone might even end up in smoke...ok maybe not but you have been warned.
Hi, thank you for you reply. I tried what you said but without success, the recovery continues to bootloop (of course I re-flashed it).
Maybe I have to say goodbye to my N1 :crying:

Not really, you can send your phone into a dealer to get a part changed well mainly the motherboard because that is dramatically cheaper than purchasing a new phone

Galaxy Note is freaking out! (solved) (dirty usb port)

It started yesterday. My Note is opening car mode itself and then turning it off and also some other programs. While it's happening i can't do anything with my phone. Then it stops the phone is ok for some time. It's very fast between swaping to car mode and back to desktop like few times a second. I have ISC Stunner 1.4.26.1v. on so my phone is using a bad kernel but everything was alright till yesterday. I've wiped galaxy but it 'didn't help. Is it emmc is broken or it's just a virus?

May be also worth cleaning the usb port with some cotton buds and pure alcohol. I've heard this type of thing happening if contacts get crossed due to residue shorting the pins.

Clean the USB connection
Go to the wiki on the note, look under troubleshooting, then for false usb connection. I had them add that after my little boo-boo.
Get a good powerful magnifying glass and look at the notes microUSB connector really close. It will be dirty, you can bank on that, but
what you really need to look for is contamination of the pins, especially the ones on the right side of the connector. Pull the battery, dip some
LINT/DEBRIS free cloth in pure alcohol, swab it clean. Let it sit for a few minutes and install the battery and see if that takes care of it.
It did for me...phone would just all of a sudden give the noise like it was connecting, and then the car mode would pop up on the screen, even
when not connected to anything.

Because i'm afraid of doing anything with my phone I don't want to get hard bricked.

[Q] Is this a virus or what?

I got a new battery last year in sept or that time around, but its kinda loose. (its 1200mA, Original samsung battery for the Ace)
It's not the exact size though, its a wee bit smaller, and slimmer.A slight tap on the back and my phone switches off.
This happens even if, a slight shake or something.
One day, I was using my phone, I was in the bus, and a bump came up,my hand shook, and the phone switched off.
when I switched it on, all the apps stored in my SD card was gone.
I rebooted twice, still nothing.
So, I downloaded the apps again, and they installed properly.
Then I decided to change my rom since I thought I've used it for a few months, so I switched to "The Ultimatum"
And just last week, the same thing happened, except this time, even when I download the same apps (like FB and whatsapp)
it doesnt install. FB FC's before even opening and Whatsapp FC's after it says it's found message backup.
so I installed friendcaster and FB messenger.
What is going on?!

I think your problem is your battery, if the changes aren't saved you can lose your data...it'd corrupt you data partition too, so flash a fresh stock an then flash a custom rom and be careful with the battery
If you're still under warranty, head to the nearest Samsung service. They'll provide you a new battery free of cost. If your warranty is over, you may have to pay. Any case, buy one new battery.

Its a tested process, the old nokia phones usually got their connector pins loose after 2 years of use and people used a folded paper to stuff the casing and make sure the battery stays connected. Sure there was never a problem of heating then but that's why i said to use something heat resistant, i am not suggesting him to blow himself or is phone up over this.
He bought a new battery, that indicates that he is not under warranty anymore, i suggested a way he can make his battery fit inside the case without disconnecting and loosing data free of cost, now you are suggesting him to spend more money on such a trivial thing?
Why waste money, its not spoiling the cosmetic looks of the phone, its fixing a problem, its safe and its free, why are you opposed to something this good?

Everything local works in India But people in the outside world, in U.S.A. for example don't go to try such things, they just get a replacement. But why not give it a try if the phone's sold with a defective hardware and you're still under warranty ? You're bound to get a free replacement.
Talking about money, if this advice was being given to a noob that obviously will work wonders outta it, he/she would definitely end up in a deeper trouble...! I've seen people bury water drenched phones under rice...! So in short, xda's noobs are way more experimental then what you'd suppose. So, always give suggestions that bring a permanent fix to the problem, so that you don't have to keep on replacing the paper wearing under your battery just because it doesn't fit the size like it did yesterday

And i just gave a suggestion, its not about who uses it, a noob does not mean he is an idiot or is retarded and he will use paper alongside a heated battery, that would be really crazy, it only means that he is new at the android development and is not familiar with the technical processes and terms, i didn't suggest rocket science to the guy!!
And its just a suggestion, if it works in India, that does not mean it won't work anywhere else, if he likes it he can follow it otherwise ignore it or use a better option and its not your place to approve or reject someone's suggestion when you are not the OP.

How to recover a hard bricked Nexus 6

I flashed Android N Preview as a secondary ROM using MultiROM, everything worked perfectly, no issues what so ever.
After a day when I was listening to music using Spotify the phone suddenly switched of abruptly with battery over 90%
Since then I couldn't able to switch on the phone again.
No bootloader, no Recovery, Its not booting at all. No response from the phone.
I think it is dead.
Changed the Battery to new one.
Not worked. No sign of anything.
When I plugged in the charger the LED light is on, but I don't think its charging phone is not warm while it is plugged in.
In fact it felt like so chill.
So, I don't know how to recover my phone.
BTW, the phone's bootloader unlocked, rooted stock ROM as the primary one.
Any help would be highly appreciated.
Thanks guys.
Did you try to press the power button for 15-20 seconds? That's a weird problem.
The same happened to me.,and my phone is stock and locked. Its bricked. Nothing we tried helped

the back plastic sheet is held on with adhesive, I would apply heat first then work it open with a tool like isesamo or maybe a thin credit card or guitar pick. underneath there are 20 torx iirc can't remember size and another plastic shell with many holes in it. this cover, the wireless charging coil, and battery are adhered together i think and there are two small rubber covers for the power button (top) and battery (bottom). remember to disconnect your ribbon cables and treat them carefully.
the real problem imo lies in reassembly. i have repaired many and never feel they are the same as they came from the factory mostly because the back cover doesn’t re-adhere well. invest in some quality 3m adhesive, even a pre cut if you can manage.
Yeah done everything I have in my power nothing works.
Asked service center to check they said the phone is dead.
To get it repaired it will cost 3500 for me, they said.
Damn it.
Don't know what to do.
Now they said that the motherboard is dead, I need to change it inorder to get it work again.
Is it possible like this kind of problem occurs?
I was in Android N listening to Spotify
Putting a pre release OS on a phone, especially using a hack like multi rom, was indeed a recipe for disaster..
I'm certain that your partitions somehow got corrupted, and that results in a un bootable phone
Hopefully, someone reading this thread, who is thinking about doing something suicidal like that will learn from your mistake, but your phone is toast, unless you can get it J-Tagged, which might not even be available for your N6
I've heard the term j-tag a lot before. What does that mean

My phone is officially dead. Service center said that the motherboard is weak and is impossible to repair and only fix is to replace the whole motherboard to a newer one. That would cost me a lot like i could get a new for it and they even suggested me to exchange this phone to a newer one.
And now i got Nexus 6P and I love it so much.
But God i really miss my Nexus 6.
Thanks for the help and suggestion here.
Long live xda.
I couldn't resist to unlock bootloader. Flash multirom and stock root and xposed.
That's the heaven, i can't live without.
I have done it all after i opened the 6P from its box. Lol.
May be i am fastest one to do it.
