Weird characters in SD card - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all, recently my external SD card has been developing all sorts of weird characters in it, and all my files are now gone. I have no idea what could be causing it, but there is upwards of 160 of these weird files on there, and I have no idea why. Any thoughts?
I also attached a screenshot of what it looks like from Windows. Thanks.

try reformatting it, make sure when you do its FAT 32 and not ntfs.

Is this a card you bought off eBay? Lots of counterfeit cards there that won't hold data reliably.

It's actually a card straight from Sandisk. I had purchased a 16 gig when I got my Windows Phone 7, then came to find out that 7 pwned sd cards. So I had it RMAed with Sandisk and they sent me a brand new one.
If it helps, I am running Firefly 3.0, Speedmod K13e, and JL3 modem. This only started happening after the update to 3.0.

HTC Fuze - Does not recognize Transcend 8 GB

Hi All,
I have a HTC Fuze. I recently purchased a Transcend 8GB Class 6 microSD card. The problem is even if the card is plugged in memory it shows that its "Not Installed".
I updated the ROM from the HTC site and then It showed the card. But, after that I could transfer the files as it gave me some error. So I kept the card in the provided adapter and pluged into my system to copy all the needed files.
But when I pugged the card back into the phone. It doesnt recognize again and just shows it as "Not Installed" I tried flashing the ROM agian but of no use. The card is not being reconized at all. Please help me how to work it out?
I replaced the card once alread with Transcend!
However, about your card problem, have you tried re-formatting it before using? I'm not sure how well it will work, but at least something worth a try...
Ohh Ya, I have tried it all. Reformat, Soft/Hard reset. Upgraded to new version of ROM. I didnt try the Enerygy ROM, trying to get one. Also I see in the forumns that there are specific format tools to do to. Any idea?
i am having the same problem with my FUZE, I have a 8 GB transcend micro SDHC did you ever get yours to "read" or install it?
Same problem here...
8gb Transcend microsdhc class 6.
Fuze doesn't recognize at all, tried two different roms. It recognizes my non hc card but not the hc card.
You need to post this in the correct forum (i.e Touch Pro). Only Diamond related posts here.
ATT FUZE and 8 Gb Class 6 MicroSD
ATT FUZE and 8 Gb Class 6 MicroSD
I tried everything reflashing phone numerous times, low level formatting microsd card nothing worked or at least not permanently. Bit the bullet and bough another microsd card after some reading but this time a Class 4. I think a Class 2 would have worked also. I don't think it has to do with the brand name and/or size just the Class.
Also had lots of freezing issues with 23081 Roms so went back to a 23420 Rom and have not had a freeze or lockup since. Not naming Roms because it's not the fault of the Roms since these are all Beta builds otherwise we would be stuck with the dull stock Roms. So i'm grateful to be able to have all these choices and I do say choices because no one here is being forced to change their Roms.
Sandisk 16 Gb is a Class 2 so that should be a clear indication that not all devices are able to work with newer storage. Standalone cameras yes but smartphones not so smart.
This is my two cents
I have ordered 2 of these same cards(18 each from Newegg deal).. both of them do not work on my FUZE. They work fine on samsung impression. Tried formatting, reflashing other ROms, TAEL, NRG etc.. no use. Any help???
Sure Fire Fix!!!
I had the same prob..Switch back and forth from the touchflo view to the regular today screen view. in both views insert and take out your memory card it should reappear in your file explorer in one of those views

SD Card Corruption with Nexus One (has happened twice)

Twice in the last two months my 16 GB Class 6 AData microSDHC memory card has popped up as being "corrupt" and needed reformatting after powering back up from reboot on my Nexus One.
The first time happened on CM 5.0.3.1, the second time was with CM 5.0.4.1 with the UV kernel. Both times, data could not be read either through the N1, my old G1, or my friend's Droid. Thus a reformat was required and data loss ensued.
Anyone else experiencing occasional data corruption on their SD card? Another friend had it happen to his G1 with an 8 GB microSDHC memory card recently, running the latest CM for the G1, also on reboot and battery swap.
Is there a common thread here? Could it be HTC hardware-related? CM software-related? Just coincidentally two bad memory cards? Me using chinese replacement batteries when swapping out? The UV kernel? Not trying to point fingers or throw stones, just trying to get to the bottom of this...just lost some great pics of a recent vacation I just got back from. Suggestions or hints are welcome!
TIA!
this has happened to me a few times but I was still able to get my data through amon-ra recovery. I think it have something to do with an improper dismount of the card.
I'm curious, what brand of memory were your friends using?
I actually had this happen when my n1 was still stock (16gb class6 card)
I put the sd card in a card reader on my pc, everything was intact so I backed it up, reformatted and still had the n1 report it was corrupt. I ended up having to shut down, remove card, boot up w/o a sd card in, then with the sd card back in I never had the problem again
I know I did a full format the very first time, that 2nd time I had done a quick format. I've done a format recently also via amonra for ext partition and still no problems.
I happend to me few weeks ago. After turned it on ... I couldn't do anything because the screen was black and any key or type of touch was useful ... so I removed the battery and at the next start the SD wasn't readable anymore!
sry 4 my bad english!

i'm running a 16 GD Class 6 AData memcard in my N1, my friend is running an 8 GB class 6 SanDisk memcard in his G1. Neither of us is running Apps2SD or anything weird.
glad to see i'm not the only one with this issue. was gonna buy a new 16 GB card but saw an article yesterday that sandisk is coming out with a 32 GB class 6 sdhc card in a month so i'll just wait for that one.
Same here
Same thing has happened three times on my Sandisk 16gb. I am running stock everything on nexus..nothing funky app wise.
After the first time it happened I replaced the sd card. It still happens. I have never been able to fix the card other than reformating. Chkdsk /f on win7 gets to 98% then throws an i/o error.
There is something majorly wrong. It seems that it happens in all android phones from time to time not just the nexus one. The consensus online seems to be that it is a mount/dismount issue that corrupts the card. I never mounted or dismounted the card at all with PC and it still happens so not sure what else it could be.
Do you think it is a phone hardware issue that would resolve with a new handset?
Has this ever happened to anybody using the standard 4GB card?
Where did you purchase your micro SD cards? There are a lot of fake/faulty cards being sold. I bought a fake one (unknowingly, obviously) and it kept getting corrupted until I tested it properly using h2testw.
I have the same problem on my nexus! I use an LG 16GB Card and CyanogenMod-5.0.5.3-N1! Any way of recovering the data without amon-ra?

+1 Make sure you dismount from computer first...otherwise this problem will pop up again...and may not be correctable next time. (There's a reason why the phone asks you to properly dismount from computer first)
no **** my n1 has the error message damaged sd card. restarted the phone a couple times and same message. what should i do? i see peoples solutions on this thread but idk where to start. i have a rooted n1 running cyan 5053 with apps2sd
I have had this problem a couple of times too, the latest being this morning
I have a stock N1 with a 16GB Sandisk card. The first time this happened, i went to use the camera and it said insert SD card, even though there was one there, I rebooted the phone and then got the Damaged SD card message.
This morning I was on the train, had been using the phone to read the news earlier with no problems, I got it out of my pocket and screen was black. and the phone completely unresponsive. Removed and replaced battery, booted up and got the Damaged sd card message again.
Both times I have been able to recover most of my files by putting the card in a PC, the first time I found that a couple of my photos were corrupted and unrecoverable, indicating that possibly it was the camera app that may have caused the issue the first time.
This time though, I found that some of my music tracks were corrupted along with one of my videos, and also a directory on the SD called LOST.DIR. Everything else was fine.
Not sure why only these files were affected, as I was not listening to music or watching any videos, so I dont see why the nexus one should have been accessing those parts of the card when it corrupted.
I could not delete the corrupted files, even on my PC, accessing them causes the PC to lock up. The only way to get card working again seems to be a format.
If only the format would work!
Regards,
Roman
Just happened to me as well. Genuine 8gb Sandisk, class 4.
After a reboot Nexus reports corrupted card. It really seems corrupted, I'm unable to read it in a PC or anything else:
[ 1042.673542] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdb] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
[ 1042.673551] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdb] Sense Key : Medium Error [current]
[ 1042.673561] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdb] Add. Sense: Unrecovered read error
[ 1042.673571] end_request: I/O error, dev sdb, sector 10248
I'm using CM 5.0.4.1 with UV kernel.
It's happened to me, even using the "safely remove hardware" function on the pc. i started just using the unmount on the phone which seemed less problematic.
Yep...add me to the list. Running stock N1 was playing music when it ocurred it started skipping through the tracks fast right before it stopped. It has affected/removed all my pics and left the music.
I'm with you all:
2 times on my Motorola Milestone, using a 16GB class 4 "unbranded" card
3 times on my Nexus, using that same 16GB class 4 card.
2 times on my Nexus, with a 16GB class 6 SanDisk card.
Most times, the data has been available by mounting the card into a PC or Mac directly, though my Mac has seen the card as "read-only" in these cases.
I seem to have this problem after mounting the card onto my work PC, though I don't often do that. I mostly use ADB to copy files. Maybe it is linked to leaving the debugging interface up all the time? I do that and I'm sure that most of you do as well...
Me too
I am using FRF91 MRCr21 and I am on a 800mv 070810 .35 rc4 kernel. Newest 5.00.08.04 radio.
Twice now after using quickboot my phone has reported my SD card damaged and it says I will have to reformat. It is a 8gb class 2 sandisk, real. One time I used quickboot to enter recovery mode and the other was only to reboot the phone. Has anyone else had this problem? What is the best fix? Both times I rebooted my phone was stable. I wasn't downloading or installing anything. Thanks!
My phone can't read the card. If I pull the card and put it directly in my computer it won't read either. Both OS can't read the file system and want me to reformat.
Neither happened due to not dismounting. Anyone correlate the problem with quickboot?
have had zero luck with adata 16GB classs 6 cards. i have gone through 2 of them however their 8 GB card has been awesome
Just had this with a Sandisk 16GB Class 2 card. Inserted into card reader, copied something, popped it back into the phone, corrupt card message. Even the computer says I have to format it.

Differences between booting from uSD and emmc?

Hey everyone,
I currently run CM7 off an SD but I was wondering if there are benefits to replacing the stock os on the emmc?
Are there any speed differences or technical pros to it?
Thanks for the input! This is a really fantastic forum!

From my experience the booting time is almost half if using emmc version. (SD card version ran on a class 4 card). After booting the performance is almost same. You may get better boot time for sd card using a class 6 or class 10 card.
I dont have an answer for you as i picked mine up yesterday and decided to go the SD route at the start i am curious on this question myself.

Well from my experience, running from the SD card is very smooth... so for ease of use i highly recommend it for a first go.
I have a follow up question- for some reason my macbook recognizes the second partition of my sd card but my pc desktop does not. I am referring to the partition generated for storage by the CM7 installation process that allows storage on the data card simultaneously.
Any ideas why this would be?

I use Macs and Windows machines rarely (and I am guessing you run Windows on the desktop) but my guess is the ext4 partitioning that CM7 uses.
I seem to recall that working- at least somewhat- on Mac but not on Windows, but I am not positive.
i chose sd, because it's super easy to backup my sd card as an image by popping it into my laptop. I can then burn that image back to a sd card if i want to try a new android build without messing up my default android install. I can always boot into the original nook os if i want as it is unmodified.
i used a class 2 and it was pretty slow. moving up to a class 6 and 10 has really helped and i don't notice any slowness.
i have not run off internal memory though so i don't have a baseline to compare.
eMMC is faster than my class 2 uSD cards, and it's easier to swa stuff back and forth from a computer/phone/camera/whatever with a removable uSD.

Cool, I've been wondering about this myself and was about to make this same thread.
I was concerned because I get a ton of force closes running off the SD, and I wondered if that was a problem that would be solved by going to eemc. Or if somehow I've made a mistake setting up my card and that's the issue. I'm very knew to this whole scene, so I'm still a bit scared of rooting at the moment and would love to iron out the problems I'm having with the SD booting. Things run fast, and fairly smoothly but eventually something will force close, like Market, and then Google Frameworks and then pretty much everything will refuse to run after I tap their icon. Forcing me to restart. Also, some things, trying to download new skins for Beautiful Widgets is impossible. Only get force closes.
I can't figure out if it's anything in particular that causes it to spiral out of control. And what makes it more annoying is this is my girlfriend's new Nook, I'm trying to get it set up for her to work as smoothly as possible. If it was just mine, I wouldn't be as bothered by messing around and trying different configurations and whatnot. But I know she won't be as patient and tolerant of these issues and won't want to keep bugging me with every problem that pops up.
Would you say this is likely a localized problem on my end through some fault of my own? From this thread, it seems people are having pretty great experiences with the SD method. Which might be reassuring. I think I'll do a backup and start from scratch this evening.
@JRSly: What type of uSD card are you using. I was experiencing the same problems you had with booting, force close, refuse to run, thus a final restart. After swapping out four different types of uSD cards, SanDisk (class 2 and 4), A-DATA (class 6), Patriot (class10), I finally deteremined that the Nook is very picky about the type of card. All the cards work fine in my digital camera or PCs, but the A-DATA and Patriot are slow and often hang in the Nook. I am now using the three Sandisk cards with no problem. I recently updated to Nookie Froyo 6.8.5 and it runs great on the SanDisk cards. Just for the test if it will run faster on A-Data (class 6), wouldn't you know it starts to hang and FC just like before. I guess I'll use the A-Data card in my digicam. Try a Sandisk card and see what happens. I even try one of my old Sandisk 2GB card from my Blackberry which is unmarked but has a class 10 performance when measured.
I'm very new to this... and I keep seeing emmc.

I feared that this might be a possibility too. My first attempts were with a little 2Gb card I'd had lying around and it didn't work very well at all. I couldn't get past installing Gapps for all the force closes. The next day I went to Target to get a larger 8 Gb one so I could also play around with Honeycomb, it's a Class 6 Lexar card. I started over last night and tried a couple of attempts at wiping and burning the image and inevitably ran into the same problems. It looks like a crummy(at least in terms of what the Nook likes) card is a distinct possibility. I'll give Sandisk a shot.

Yup. (I didn't get it either.)
Since MMC is a sibling of SD cards, it's basically dedicated internal SD storage with a controller.

You got it in one.
sd card is self explanatory, of course, and emmc is the internal memory of the NC.
The only DISADVANTAGE to running on emmc is that you lose the stock B&N version of Android.
Other than that- it boots a bit faster, may run a bit faster and be less likely to have force closes and similar problems.

[Q] Cannot boot from microSD card

Hi all.
I have been trying to install CM7/gingerbread over the past couple of days to no availe.
First I tried my 16gb card and now I've tried my 4gb card. Unfortunately, I don't have any smaller, or non SDhc, cards around.
Tried holding the power button, but that doesn't seem to make a difference. I have attatched a screen capture of the sd card contents. The "extra" folders at the top were not originally there, but were added when it launched into the normal OS.
One thing that came to mind is I have installed ClockworksMod to internal memory earlier. Could that be screwing up my being able to boot the SD card?
Robert
(will attach image later as Dolphin HD won't let me do the pull down for whatever reason)
I found my Nook Color was very finicky about the card. It did not like the Transcend 4 GB class 6 that I had, but worked on some generic 2 GB card that I had leftover.
See if you can get a cheap brand name 2 or 4 GB card and try it with that.

System properties not responding. SD card Missing! Had happened 3 times.

Here's the story and info.
I got the Blu R1 HD (prime special) went down to Target and bought thier DANE 64GB CL10 MicroSD for $20. Plugged it in and formatted it as internal storage. (A cautionary not then said, "if formatted as internal memory SD card will ONLY work in this device) I chose, who cares and continued.
Worked great for a day or two ... but then it happened ... it went missing! All the apps and data was gone. A notification popped up and said, "Transcendent SD card missing. reinsert this device". I did as the all knowing phone asked but to no avail, it wouldn't recognize it.
I rebooted the phone and a massage popped up saying "system properties not responding. Wait or Quit" I've tried both options, doesn't seem to make a difference.
I tried reformatting it in the phone and it wouldn't unmount. Tried on our computers (both pc and Mac) and neither computers were allowed access to the sd card to reformat it.
I then returned the sd card thinking that it might be flawed, got another one from Target and it worked great ... for about two weeks... Then went missing.
Did everything mentioned above. Got the new one and it worked for 4 weeks, thought my problems were over ... then the SD card ran away again and is now currently missing. The phone does not recognize that there is a sd card when looking for it in a file explorer. In settings it says the sd card is corrupted.
Is my phone messed up? I'd it the brand of SD card? Is there a way to make the phone recognize the sd card?
Please help me find my missing sd card.
Same problem, SD Card is showing as corrupted. I have it installed as internal storage and have for over a month with no problems. SD is a Patriot LX 64gb. I haven't changed anything on the phone. I have not fine anything but reseat the SD. Any help is massively appreciated!
Maybe the problem is using a 64GB MicroSD Card. The phone specs say it's supports up to 32GB only.

That is incorrect it supports 64GB SD, many report success with 128GB cards, so I doubt its an issue with size...

Okay I caved and tried to reformat it, and all it does is fail, or drops off half-way as though I had removed the card. If I try to put the card in my computer or any other device it just straight doesn't exist, doesn't even say it isn't compatible or anything, just straight doesn't exist. Think the card is just bad, gonna return it and get a new one, will see what happens.
I have had a SANDISK Micro SDXC UHS-1 64GB CARD in mine for almost 5 months now and no issues.
I see I'm not the only one with this issue, although mine is a little different... I got a generic 128gb card and plugged it in, has been issue free for months... BUT, lately and for what seems like no apparent reason, the card guess missing... Rebooting the phone sees the card again with all apps and photos intact. It could be weeks/days/hours/minutes before it happens again... Shortest turn around - about 10 minutes. Longest - about 2 weeks... Haven't tried plugging the card directly into my computer yet, but when it is mounted on the phone it works fine (until it goes missing). Thought maybe it was because it was a cheap card...
