[Q] what to do with sgs? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

guys i got a new sgs and i have no idea what to do with it!the factory build u.i sucks and mine is a 2.2 froyo and a unlocked piece.what should i do yo update and change my u.i??pls do comment and send links with instructions

Try some new ROMs (read up on it first...will void warranty) or some new Launchers. Going with Launcher Pro is probably the most noticeable thing I did, along with Darky's ROM.

MiUi ROM would be great : ) It totally changes your phone UI. As mentioned, the risk of such actions.

You could start by going trough the links posted above, you can also try this site for flashing explanation + instructions.
Can you tell us why do you think the phone "sucks"?

I would update to Gingerbread and use a nice ROM (just look in the SGS-development area).

just flash CF-Root via odin, then clockworkmod, create a backup and try the romkitchen or darkys rom. best roms imo
But in this tutorial : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=939752

Just tells how to falsh custom firmwares, how do i do to install darkys rom for exemple ?
Well the simple answer is look at page one of Darkys posts where oddly enough the instructions are written as how to flash his rom .
Bit of advice dont flash until you really understand what you are doing unless you want to join the IBSGS club short for i bricked my galaxys an now it does not work .

Shouldn't that be IBMSGS club?
This is becoming way too common. Flashing before reading.
I dont want to brick my phone, if that happens i will cry like a b*** xp I will do step by step
You should look out for Darky's ROM, best ROM out there! It makes your SGS so damn fast
They even have a great step by step tutorial on how to root/flash your SGS. Don't have the link by hand, you should look out for it ^^
One advice: Never ever flash the official 2.2 Update from Samsung. My phone was nearly turned complete useless because I had since then terrrible performance problems...

[Q]Switching from Defy to galaxy S

basically i had a defy for a while and i got annoyed not by the phone but the services and hardware problems itself. It was going to repair centre every 2 weeks or so. SO now i've decided to switch to galaxy. Some questions i would like to ask are:
-If i buy a second hand (very good condition) phone, would i be able to install software upgrades on it even though its warranty is expired? by software upgrades i mean Android OS upgrade from 2.2 to 2.3 and stuff like that.
-Some info about lagfix would be helpful
-Overall galaxy's performance is good?
-If i flash a sbf on galaxy, is it possible to downgrade to the stock one? because it has got unlocked bootloader...(that's the part where motorola defy fails)
Also do let me know about things i need to know and some suggestion on buying a second hand galaxy s would be very appreciated too. Thanks !

Well first advice is to read read read these forums, lots of information.
Your phone has a quite old version of android so updating that would be a good start. Froyo 2.2.1 is the latest official which should be available in Kies for you. Gingerbread 2.3.3 is expected to be officially released for the SGS within the next 2 weeks. You can also flash custom ROMs and newer ROMs then Kies offers you yourself, but without 3-button recovery thats tricky. Atleast make/buy and test a recovery JIG before going there.
Then maybe slap on a theme of your liking and get some good apps (dont be afraid to pay a few bucks for good apps either)
Being bored of phone usually means youre not doing anything interesting or fun with it a phone in itself is only so exciting

well, there's your problem
I don't know how much you already know but I advise you to read as much stickies and rom threads as you can. After that you will probably come to the conclusion that you want to install a custom ROM. Do so and your life will change forever
If you need any help, don't hesitate to consult the search function (or ask here^^)
Have a look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091
This is the place to start.
After you have read everything there, this would be some steps to follow:
1.Install ADB on your computer
2.Download Odin 1.7
3.Repair your 3-button recovery/download problem with Richtofen's guide (after this you can do whaterver u want with your phone, as long as you stay away from firmwares with bootloaders included)
4.Flash a 2.2.1 or 2.3.3 firmware using Odin (i recommend one of the deodexed firmwares from Ramad's thread)
5.Apply what ever theme you want
Maybe this instruction seem a little hard to understand now but after you've finished reading the wiki from the link i've posted, it will be more clearer.
thanks for all the replies I will start reading about what you guys have posted in the morning iam on my mobile now and it is late please stay in touch with me I will be replying activly and frequently thx again ! Being afraid in starting is normal .... but the golden rule is to read and understand several times what procedure u have to follow...and second imp thing is read n follow instructions provided in specific post.
As different rom needs different technique and different procedure.
Another thing is search youtube for videos on how to's.

Here is a link to custom rom MIUI 2.3.3. (I am not telling u to install it on ur device this is just for reference n learning purpose). It has all the instructions and also a video on how to install the rom. I would suggest just read the whole thing and try to understand what is involved in the process.

Once you done with it then find another thread of custom rom and read through it.
And even read the comments on different pages it is very useful and most of the questions are also.answered. Thats how i learned .

Which is the best I9000 Gingerbread ROM on XDA!!!

Hi all,
I've had a GT-I9000 for over 6 months now and I haven't really tried too much stuff on it except for an official firmware update and OCLF, and as an XDA member this is my first post.
I'm currently running Froyo 2.2 (I9000DDJP2, kernel 2.6.32.9), everything was fine until my phone started to lag like hell and lots of force closes and reboots which is really pissing me off now. I was planning to wait for the official gingerbread update, however I think XDA already has tons of Gingerbread ROMS out there ready to be flashed. Also, I saw a few videos of I9000 running cyanogenmod which looked awesome. So i decided to give it a shot.
I'm a total noob at flashing, and to be honest, this will be my first time trying it out. Can you please suggest which is the best gingerbread ROM out there for I9000 and can it be flashed using ROM manager or do i need to follow the ODIN method.
Also, one very very dumb question , what is the difference between a ROM and a kernel, and is it required to flash both of them separately, if yes then which one should go first.

You need to read everything, especially if you don't know the difference between a kernel and a rom. You are no where near flashing, I'm saying this so you don't brick your phone.
Go to general thread and read through the stickies as these will lead you in the right direction. Once you have understood all of them, then proceed to flash.
Cyanogen is not for beginners so stay away.
Gingerbread roms that are supposed to be good are Juwes, Insanity, Simply Honey and Doc's. There are many GB roms but these seem to be the most popular.
Read everything until you know everything for sure and then go and flash
Good luck

Thanks for your reply... I'll start off with the reading i suppose, coz obviously i dont wanna brick my device... I've read that Insanity can be flashed directly using ROM Manager... Is this true?? If yes then can I try that one first, coz it seemed to be an easy enough method to flash a custom rom...
You also have to understand that Gingerbread is in effect Beta not released and devs still working on it in XDA . If you are capable of unbricking your phone dont mind breaking it then carry on otherwise wait for official release update through official method backup the firmware then customize as you want .

Will 2.3 solve my lag/hang issue? I don't know what is root or flash exactly, what can it do? any disadvantages?
Oh! and what is JIT? I heard it can make apps run faster! worth a try?
I don't mind and hardcore/heavy solution(need advance skill) as long there is a tutorial for me xD
Really appreciate for any help and advises ^^ TQ very much..

Want you need to do it search for username ramad or chainfire on rooting your phone... they offer good guides on how to do it or go and sign up to this website.... www.darkyroms.com... good luck...

Ok! I found some ramad's post, will have a try... some question here.. can you help me out?...
Root means i can bypass OS permission and configure the system my self right? How about flash? erase the default firmware(original android os?) and install a new one? Will it cause some hardware failure or unable to use some features like wifi, bluetooth, gps? or maybe it will enhance it? !
After flash... some apps will unable to use right? because many apps support original os like 2.2, 2.3... if after i flash it... my os is not android 2.2, etc anymore right?
And just now i factory reset my phone.. now it unable to play Mp4 file.. it say i need to convert to supported format when transfer to phone... it is strange that i never have this error before, although i was transferring the same Mp4 file that i use to play in my phone before.
Flash your phone with Darky's 9.5 link was given by chrisdavesants
It's really easy to do too and plenty of guides are around.
Although it is a Froyo (2.2.1) rom it is far more stable than any Gingerbread rom's
Everything works just as it would on a stock rom.

Good luck on that but i tell you no difference....
Root means i can bypass OS permission and configure the system my self right? Yes!!
How about flash? erase the default firmware(original android os?) and install a new one? Right...
Will it cause some hardware failure or unable to use some features like wifi, bluetooth, gps?No or maybe it will enhance it? ! Some enhancements are feasible on custom roms...
After flash... some apps will unable to use right? Didnot experience any apps not working... everything worked...
because many apps support original os like 2.2, 2.3...custom roms are based on official 2.2 or/and 2.3 so they are the same features are just enhanced...
if after i flash it... my os is not android 2.2, etc anymore right? Depends on what you flash... will stay 2.2.1 for froyo or 2.3.3 with ginger
And just now i factory reset my phone.. now it unable to play Mp4 file.. it say i need to convert to supported format when transfer to phone... it is strange that i never have this error before, although i was transferring the same Mp4 file that i use to play in my phone before.
